(For those who asked, I hunt with a Savage 30-30.)

I noted your post about trespassers and I can identify. For a number of years I owned a 176 acre “hobby” farm property in the Eastern Townships in Quebec.
I had it posted, in accordance with the statutes…no hunting. The local hunting organization was steamed at me, since I refused to allow them to hunt on my land. I was somewhat surprised, given that it was my land, and I thought that I had a right to determine what was to take place on my own property.
I respnded that the deer on my property were so damn tame, that hunting them was hardly sport.
Those who chose to ignore the posted signs, at least when I was on the property, were reminded of the fact that my motto was “Trespassers will be shot…survivors will be prosecuted”. Joking, of course.
Perhaps the fact that I am a pretty big guy had something to do with it (or perhaps it was the Smith & Wesson pistol I had on my belt when I was in the confines of my property and was a little leery of the wolves in the neighbourhood), but I do not recall ever encountering any second offenders.
Actually I have quite a funny story to share, assuming there are still people looking
at this thread.
I live in suburban Vancouver area..although we are urban, I am about a block away from 1500 acres of forest preserve. In the preserve, we have lots of deer, tons of coyotes, and the occasional black bear.
Since the weather has turned uncharistically cold lately (thnks Al Gore), we have been proviliged to have daily visits into our garden from a doe and a young buck…deer of course.
I have a golden retriever.
For some strange reason, my golden and the doe have become smitten with one another. They roll around on the ground together, playing, licking each other’s faces, and generally performing, at least from my perspecitve, like “dog friends” playing with each other.
She is fairly small, I’m guessing about 100 lbs, but my golden, who is 9 months old, only weighs about 85 lbs. So they are fairly evenly matched.
While this is all going on, the buck, who is quite a bit bigger, is pretty aloof. Both deer have never had a problem with me, they know that I feed them, they take food like carrots right from my hand. But the buck, whenever Brady (my dog), tries to approach him, he lowers his head, albeit with fairly small antlers,, stamps his feet, snorts etc…and Brady is smart enoungh to depart.
And he goes back to playing with his friend, the doe.
I have to admit hat I am getting a little long in the tooth…but I have never witnessed this kind of interraction between two competely different species,, each of which supposedly should be reluctant to approach the other in anything than an adversarial mode.
Go figgure
Nothing wrong with a 30-30 for bush whitetail, but that looks like country that could use a rifle with a little more reach.
I’d go with a 6mm Remington or 6.5 x 55mm if you don’t want big kick, but a little more range.
Along with some optics of course.
Bruce, since this is Ontario I let the cops carry the pistols and let them deal with whatever idiots are out there. Because I have to, not because it works so awesome.
Grandad used to do it the other way back in the 50’s, that worked better.
Knight99, , 1917 GEW-98 in 8mm Schnauser, roller coaster sights. kBOOM.
Knight99, I should add that the venerable 8mm Mauser doesn’t kick as hard as those lever action .3030s do. My old Winchester was painful to shoot more than five rounds, with the Mauser I could shoot a whole High Power match in comfort.

I have no experiance with the 8mm Mauser, but I have no doubt that you are right as another good option.

Should have also mentioned .260 Rem.
