In keeping with the bracing weather out here on the prairies, here’s Yorkshire group Swan Arcade (Dave Brady, Heather Brady, and Jim Boyes) belting out an a cappella version of a seventeenth-century Quaker hymn that sounds more like a battle cry called Babylon Is Fallen.

  1. I’m super, thanks for asking! All things considered, I couldn’t be better I must say! Because I’m feeling so insanely….
“A Cologne funeral home is hoping to draw in gay clientele by offering erotic caskets with nude renaissance imagery or rainbow-coloured urns, along with other tailored services for homosexuals and their mourners.
“A casket featuring the figures of muscular young men in athletic poses has been in the display case at Königsfeld & Brandl for the last three weeks. Most passers-by are delighted by what they call their ‘gay caskets,’ including women of a certain age, he added. ‘We had a widow in the office whose husband we buried and she was quite taken with the firm young men on the casket,’ he said.”
Don’t you think I look good in this…

  2. Macleans writes an article on raced-based segregation in Canadian universities. Seems that some “white” kids refer to certain institutions – University of Toronto, for example – as “Asian.” Evidently the perpetually lazy/partying white kids don’t want to/can’t compete with the super-focused Chinese kids. So they go to Queen’s, Western and McGill instead.
Flipping the channels tonight I see a Chinese-language report in which Chinese students are up in arms over the article and – get this – make demands of Macleans (stop me if you’ve heard that one before).
My best transcription of a visual:
    Demands
    1. A full and comprehensive public apology.
    2. Macleans and the Toronto Star must engage in public consultations to specifically address racism and racial stereotyping in their publications.
    3. Anti-racism corporate and editorial policies must be implemented.
    4. Must fund and support a national racial reconciliation conference.
The white kids on the other hand likely would have been happy with hookers and beer.

  3. Here in Ontario, McSquinty seems to be tuning up for an election…..attempting to placate the rage over the HST…….he is allegedly reducing electricity rates 10%.
I suspect this refers to electricity rates rather than Hydro bills…..
If my suspicions are correct this means I get a $2 reducion on a $75 Hydro bill…..
    Whoopy $h*t!

  4. Here’s a look at the world’s top supercomputer. (It’s in China.) It has a computing speed of 2.57 quadrillion calculations per second.
I don’t know much about computers…is that considered fast?

  5. EDB, that certainly is fast but speed described in these ways can be deceiving. Usually a “benchmark” program is developed that more closely evaluates true throughput.
But my analysis is decades old. Anyone with perhaps a more modern analysis?

  6. On a totally different “bent”, book early for your Good Riddance Party when Ronald Smith gets his 3 needles in January.
I plan to “pop” a champagne cork the minute I hear the news announcing the syringe breaks his skin.
    Piece of $hite…

  7. Ronald Smith? But he just wanted “to find out what it would be like to kill somebody”. Dude has an inquisitive mind is all.

  8. Mississauga Matt,WRT the ‘Asian” schools. The UBC is referred to as the “University of a Billion Ch….”.

BTW,thanks for your you-tube captures,I’ve watched more of Michael Coren from you than from the regular TV.

  9. Yup that’s a fast computer!
I’d be more concerned about the cost of power consumption if I owned it. Not from an environmental angle, duh – but from a utility power bill cost.
My home computer already runs at 750W at normal operating parameters, couldn’t imagine what that baby sucks back.
Thankfully for the Chinese they have many peasants they can pull from the rice fields and stick in coal mines when needed.

“When Canada was denied a seat on the United Nations’ security council last month, it was written in a national editorial here that the UN was “an Orwellian perversion — bloated, obsolete and a waste of prime New York City real estate.”
Space was limited, so punches were obviously pulled.
The UN, in fact, is much more than just a bloated, obsolete Orwellian perversion, having noticeably devolved during the last two decades into what can only be described as a global village idiot that should have its keys to world affairs taken away.
In short, the UN is a snake pit, once well-intended but now a sick joke that defies all western logic, morality and sensibilities.”

  12. Dianna Cahn and Kevin Baron, Unveiling of Afghan plan will tout transition, not conclusion
NATO leaders gathering for a summit in Portugal this weekend will announce plans for the gradual handover of Afghanistan to fledgling Afghan forces by 2014 and a partnership that will endure for far longer.
The plan, presented as a natural transition to Afghan control at a time when leaders describe game-changing successes on the battlefield, is seen by some as the United States and its partners devising a way out.
But officials are warning that this process will take years and there is no quick route from this tumultuous and fractured nation….

  13. Sebastian Abbot, US wants tribesmen to fight Taliban in Afghanistan
When members of the Alikozai tribe rose up against the Taliban in this critical insurgent stronghold, neither coalition forces nor the government in Kabul lifted a finger to help them….
Now, U.S. Marines hope they can persuade the Alikozai that this time will be different. They want the tribesmen to take up arms again and help drive the Taliban out of this river valley in southern Helmand province’s Sangin district – the deadliest piece of real estate for coalition forces this year….
The area also contains the main road to the Kajaki dam, the biggest source of electricity for southern Afghanistan. The dam is running only at partial capacity, because it has not been safe enough to transport materials and equipment needed to install a third turbine….

  14. Here’s an excellent article on Obama as only a campaigner and disinterested in the work of the presidency.
    http://newsflavor.com/opinions/white-house-insider-on-obama-the-president-is-losing-it/
Essentially, this ‘insider’ is discussing how
“Obama loved to campaign. He clearly didn’t like the work of being President though, and that attitude was felt by the entire White House staff within weeks after the inauguration. Obama the tireless, hard working candidate became a very tepid personality to us. And the few news stories that did come out against him were the only things he seemed to care about. He absolutely obsesses over Fox News. For being so successful, Barack Obama is incredibly thin-skinned. He takes everything very personally.”
That he ‘turns off’ when you discuss policies or Congress; that he can’t seem to think off of the teleprompter..that when you hear him ‘talking without the script’..the change is shocking…a real ‘slow talker’..where you can see ‘the wheels turning’. And Obama can’t be bothered with the issues of the nation.
“When you take away the crowds, Obama gets noticeably smaller. He shrinks up inside of himself.” Right – that’s a narcissist reality.
Obama is not a president; he is only a salesman..of the policies developed by others.

  15. Thanks for the song, EBD: my Yorkshire genes respond enthusiastically to such robust, straight-up singing. And, at the refrain, I really like the flat-tone, sheep-like “B-a-a-a-bylon is fallen . . .”!
It may be a 17th century Quaker hymn, but is this version Sacred Harp? I Googled “Babylon is Falling” and got this information:
    “From Sacred Harp
    Tune: W. E. Chute, 1878
    Meter: Particular Meter: 8,7,8,7,8,7”
There are many YouTube versions of this shape note song: Swan Arcade’s rendition is by far the most accomplished!

“The season’s first true blast of bitterly cold air is on the way for the nation and will make for a miserable welcoming for Thanksgiving travelers early next week. Some people will be dealing with AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures as low as 40 degrees below zero.
The bitter cold will have residents from Montana to the Dakotas and Minnesota feeling like they have been thrown right into the heart of winter. In some places, this will be the earliest round of subzero high temperatures in almost five years.
While colder air has already started to spread through the northern Rockies and northern High Plains, the true shot of bitterly cold air will not start pouring down from Canada until Friday and over the weekend.”

  19. rzr,
I read that shout-out to Kate but it is kind of cryptic. Why does Steyn need Brad Wall’s permission to visit? Outstanding arrest warrant? Did the province issue a restraining order to keep him out? After all, Sask. was one of the few provinces that didn’t charge him with a human rights commission offense.

  20. (PDF warning) Richard Swain, Case Study: Operation Enduring Freedom Philippines
If the future is going to consist of a era of persistent conflict in which the hallmark prophylactic strategy will involve U.S. armed forces in various foreign internal defense and stability and support operations, the ongoing collaboration with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, now in its ninth year under the title Operation Enduring Freedom Philippines, should serve as a model. Because of the complexity of the situation that forms the context for U.S. intervention, the development of the 2002 operations reflects in many ways the approach to problem solving adopted in doctrine under the rubric of design….

  21. Obama/Holder’s office has issued a statement that they were, of course, right in the civilian trial of the terrorist Ghailani. A ’senior administrator’ is quoted as saying:
“So, we tried a guy (who the Bush Admin tortured and then held at GTMO for 4-plus years with no end game whatsoever) in a federal court before a NY jury with full transparency and international legitimacy and — despite all of the legacy problems of the case (i.e., evidence getting thrown out because of Bush-Admin torture, etc,) we were STILL able to convict him and INCAPACITATE him for essentially the rest of his natural life, AND there was not one — not one — security problem associated with the trial.”
    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/11/senior-administration-official-defends-ghailani-trial-verdict.html
    Ghailani wasn’t tortured (i.e., waterboarded).
And even a military commission can’t use data obtained by coercion:
“[304(a)(1)] No statement, obtained by the use of torture, or by cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. . . . whether or not under color of law, shall be admissible in a trial by military commission . . .” Military Commissions Manual.
So how can this senior administrator suggest that the evidence, obtained as he says by torture (without informing us what this was), was ever, remotely, of use in a trial – civilian or military? It wasn’t. So, what’s his point?
Oh – the Obama tactic: Bash Bush. It’s getting tiresome.

  23. My theory for Obama’s off-script slow, halting speech pattern is that he’s translating from one language to another as he speaks: from communism to standard western liberalism (new meaning).
He lies 24/7 and when you lie a lot you are constantly back-checking all the time to make sure that your current lie syncronizes with your earlier lies.
    Very tiring for both sides.

  24. Camus’ rats* have “landed” in Ireland.
The European socialists have occupied Ireland.
“the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund that landed in Dublin today can now be called the de facto government of the Irish Republic,”.
“So essentially, this new non-elected de facto government of the Irish Republic is also a secret one.”.
    …-
“Meet the new government of Ireland”
“The only thing sovereign in Ireland right now is the contempt which the government holds for its own people, denying point blank that an EU/IMF bailout for the national economic car crash is imminent. So first off I would like to offer profuse thanks and curtsies to Simeon Djankov, deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria, for finally calling a spade a spud when he blurted, “I expect a bailout decision to be taken within a week.” This was before a gathering of journos in Brussels, none of whom reported afterwards that my man Simeon burst into a fit of giggles, with his eyes crossed, and tongue stuck out. So perhaps I would not be naïve in assuming Simeon is telling the truth, and that Taoiseach Brian Cowen, as well as French finance minister Christine Lagarde, have been telling the reverse of that.
This means also that the “team” consisting of experts from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund that landed in Dublin today can now be called the de facto government of the Irish Republic, with powers to oversee Ireland’s mad austerity and budget plans. In a depressingly limpid turn of phrase from the delightful people over at the EUobserver, said team will “maintain a degree of authority over the elected government of Ireland.”
Seeing as they now hold a degree of authority over the government of Ireland, it would only be normal, think you, that we get acquainted. You know, whether they got their Leaving Cert, favourite cheese, star signs. However, according to deliciously named EU spokesman Amadeu Tardio, “These people do not do press conferences. They do not need to speak to the press.” Amadeu’s thoughts have been echoed as if from one and the same brain by an ECB spokespeep – “These people do not need to have a public profile… People do not need to know who these inspectors are,” she outputted.
So essentially, this new non-elected de facto government of the Irish Republic is also a secret one. And if a secret government in a democratic society is not strange enough, then what about Amadeu’s declaration that he doesn’t know how many they are. “There will be more than two but fewer than 10 people going,” he said.”

Moral: Never shout fire on a Red-Green ferry.
    …-
“The owner of an electrical car has taken the blame for an Oslo to Copenhagen ferry fire”
“The fire on the vehicle deck of DFDS’s Oslo to Copenhagen Pearl of Scandinavia ferry opn Wednesday was probably started by an extension wire to an electrical car that was being re-charged.
According to DR, the owner of the vehicle has admitted that he is probably the one who caused the fire after purchasing an extension lead in Norway with which he hoped to re-charge his vehicle on the ferry overnight.
“I take full responsibility for using the plug. I had not expected it to be so wet that something happened to the lead. But we can see that it did,” says Søren Ekelund, owner of a company that changes traditional fuel cars into electrical vehicles.
“There’s nothing wrong with the ship’s sockets. It is in no way the Oslo ferry’s fault,” Ekelund tells DR.dk.
DFDS has not yet confirmed that the extension lead was the reason for the fire.
“We know that the fire started in an electrical car on the vehicle deck. But whether it happened the way it has been described here is not something that we can confirm. We are still waiting for the final conclusion of the police investigation,” says DFDS Press Spokesman Gert Jakobsen.”

“Former car czar fined $6.2M US
Former White House car czar Steven Rattner, who helped lead the U.S. presidential task force that restructured General Motors and Chrysler, has agreed to pay $6.2 million US to settle federal charges he paid kickbacks to New York state pension officials.
On the day GM shares started trading on stock markets, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced Thursday the fine and agreement with Rattner, which settles federal charges that he paid officials to steer investments from a state pension fund into the private equity fund he once ran.”
“Two of the state pension officials have pleaded guilty and another has told the judge in the case through his lawyers that he intends to plead guilty to taking part in a wide-scale program to elicit kickbacks from securities firms.
A number of those firms and their executives already have paid many millions of dollars in penalties.”
