You should have seen the newsrooms the other day when you got out on bail. Senior journalists were wandering around in a daze, smacking their heads in disbelief and calling up their libel lawyers for the first time in years.
Your Conrad Black thread.
CBC reporters referred to Lord Black as Black or Conrad in their coverage last night. Very offensive.
In Conrad’s view, journalistic detractors are “profit centres”. He needs money now to pay legal bills so expect writs to fly fast and furious.
“Editor’s Note: We have closed comments on this story for legal reasons. We appreciate your understanding.”
Indeed.
I think the key agent who worked diligently against Black – was Jean Chretien.
The two have some similiarities of character, both have large egos and self-confidence, but Black’s knowledge base (history, etc) is superb while Chretien is someone who works within a crony network, pulling personal strings and giving personal favours.
Chretien has been determined to destroy Black for years – and vice versa, including Black’s launch of the National Post as a vehicle to expose Chretien’s corruption in government.
I think the real battle remains between those two.
Go Lord Black go!
I always read his articles and enjoyed many of them.
ET.. I’m with you on that. Not difficult to see the connection to Power Corp.
I suggested a silly poll on another thread:
Who should be allowed back in Canada?
1. Conrad Black
2. Omer Khadr
Results predictable and various depending on the media posting the poll.
Why is Wente apologising? Is that a confession to the campaign to ‘get him good’? Is that sincere, or a bit smarmy? Haven’t kept tabs, but is she one of the that did not diss him?
Let’s get going on the t-shirts:
Let Black Come Back.
I’m looking forward to his connection to SUN-TV, in any form.
Hope Chretien squirms.
Have always admired Lord Black going back to when I was a teenager.
The man has guts and he brought a refreshing new perspective to Canadian politics.
I am reminded of the image of Bonoparte’s progress to Paris following his escape from Elba.
Cretin lacks the talent of Arthur Wellesley.
Two words about Conrad Black: Massey Ferguson.
Some of us have longer memories than others.
I figure most of these jerks insult Conrad Black so that they might get to meet Barbara Amiel. That includes the lady jurinalists.
you might be a CBCpravda liberal journalist if you want Conrad Black in jail but Omar Khadr on the streets of Trona
Way to go Connie.
Joe Warmington is too logical:

Killer remains in Canada but Lord Black can’t come home?
I wrote Black years ago about why he had left Quebec and after editing the letter I sent it to him. Unfortunately the one I sent was unsigned but he wrote me back noting that usually he doesn’t answer unsigned letters but mine intrigued him so he replied to my questions.
I felt like a chastised school boy but having read many of his books I still admire the man.
bluetech – right – Chretien and Power Corp was/is a major corrupt cabal. It put Chretien in power, for their agenda. Black tried to break it and used his National Post in that attempt.
He got Chretien out, via Martin..but Chretien destroyed Martin, and the Liberal Party, as he left..leaving both of them with Adscam and no money. Remember, Chretien introduced the rule that stopped corporate funding of political parties..heh..AFTER he left. Before that, Chretien had relied heavily on his stealing from taxpayer funds (Sponsorship/Adscam) and corporations for keeping him and PowerCorp in power.
The Liberal Party under Chretien had no policies or programs other than to rule. It achieved this by dividing the people into multicultural enclaves, buying the vote, dividing the opposition…and using an ideology of anti-Americanism as a ‘uniting theme’.
When Chretien was forced out, he vowed to ‘get Black’ – and he did. Now, it will be interesting to see what happens. Chretien doesn’t have the power he used to have and the Liberal Party is not in power (and Rae is Chretien’s guy not Ignatieff).
Meanwhile, the Canadian MSM goes their merry ignorant way, locked into the leftist sophistry bred into them by Trudeau-Chretien..
Well here I go again . . . . . . . . . .
Kory Teneycke truly has the opportunity to send conservative shockwaves through Canadian mainstrem TV if he can convince Conrad Black to go on board as a regular contributor with the proposed “FOX North” or whatever it will be called, conservative TV channel.
And a double whammy to rest of the leftist MSM within this country if Kory would acquire the services of Kate McMillan the Delisle Saskatchewan “Small Dead Animals” blogger also to comment on issues as a regular.
Add in Lorne Gunter, Ezra Levant or David Warren.
Sea change from the current leftist corporate Liberal lickspittle that presently exists as Canadian MSM.
From Wente’s column: “He’s got to figure out a way to get back home to Canada, the land he once derided as a ‘Third World dump run by raving socialists.'”
Lord Black is often accused of being hyper articulate or just plain over the top, but his description of Canada during the Trudeaupian/Power Corporation stranglehold on our politics, from the early ’70s to 2006 (holy cow! 30 YEARS!), is conservatively accurate. He could have been much more scathing without sacrificing the veracity of his opinion.
I am delighted he’s out of jail and I hope he KICKS THE BUTTS of the vindictive, envious, thugs in the Librano$ and all of their media hangers-on who had a vendetta against him, vendettas being something the Librano$ — with their Quebec lieutenant, Gagliano, and his connections arranging things — were particularly adept at.
Whatever Lord Black’s peccadilloes, he didn’t deserve the jail time. I kind of get the feeling that the judge is an overly zealous, finger-wagging, politically correct/corporation envious, new puritan. I see these types all the time in the “education system,” the new overseers who are historically challenged and can’t hold a candle to half the staff they’re “managing,” either professionally or ethically. From all of the Amy St. Eves, good Lord, deliver, us.
Conrad Black is actually a Canadian hero.
He took a badly entrenched media where the only “balanced” debate was one slightly left of centre, more left of centre, then out in left field, and opened it up to comments and opinions of a much broader nature. Of course, his detractors in the Liberal$, NDP, and the Bloc, not to mention the CBC, the TorStar, the Probe and Fail, etc. were livid that the silent majority of Canadians now had a voice in the way our country was being run.
Though there were a few of us who’d figured this out — but had little or no voice in the national “debate,” certainly not within the media loop — the National Post notified the country that under the Liberal$, Canada was being run by a bunch of special-interest groups intent on forwarding a left-lib, socialist, secular humanist agenda, in part by misrepresenting the aspirations of most Canadian families — that would include moms, dads, and kids — as backwards and retrograde.
The National Post eloquently defended, and still does, the integrity of the traditional family, the Church, and much smaller government. They also did a lot of investigative reporting, something our MSM had long ago eschewed, to expose the many Liberal scandals which cost the Canadian taxpayer a bunch of bucks, not to mention a smaller stake in their own future.
No wonder so many have been out to get him. Conrad Black has widened our democracy in Canada, giving voice through his media empire, to millions of Canadians who had been left out of the national debate and the media loop for far too long.
I am very grateful to him and wish him and Lady Black the very best in the future. May he vanquish all of his nasty, mean-spirited, and envious detractors!
I hope he is brought back to Canada just so that he can write for Sun TV or whatever it is called.
“Third World dump run by raving socialists.”
The raving socialist he was referring to was the lovely Jean Chretien, who was not only exactly that, but a bully and a mean, petty, vengeful crook of a politician, with the power to revoke the citizenship of Lord Conrad Black for the crime of accepting a Lordship from the Queen, but, curiously, not the citizenship of the Khadr family.
I hope Black tears all of the malicious envious bastard to shreds and sends them to an impoverished retirement.
well said sylvanguy
it goes double for me…
Seems the CBC hates this guy as much as they love Omar the Bomb Thrower.
I’m waiting for the next “breaking news” from the CBC. “Conrad Black Takes a Leak, or somesuch.
re Sasquatch
If I recall there were pamplets sent out by a wag in 1815 that read “the Monster has escaped from Elba…the Tyrant has landed in the south…the Userper is in Mont Blanc…the General is in Lyon…Napoleon is at Fonteinblu…His Imperial Majesty shall sleep in his palace in Paris tonite…I always like that, fear can be a powerful force to correct bad behavior
Phantom,
Yes those two words are etched in my families memory as well.
I would add in Dominion Stores.
Unfortuantley the education of Conrad involved a number of other people.
There are many things to admire about COnrad Black, but there are a number of things worth criticing.
So CBC said something about Conrad Black. Can’t says I saw that. Can’t says I saw CBC since the 2000 presidential election. They were sickeningly liberal partisan. Turned to the web and got my stuff from the objective Rush Limbaugh. Never looked back. Haven’t seen CBC news since. Who’s the taxpayer funded over paid reader there now?
Isn’t this the same Lord Conrad Black who was convicted of fraud in the US?
Am I missing something, or are we supposed to celebrate this fellow – a convicted criminal in the US – just because he stood up to Chretien?
I’m confused.
John Galt is from the imagination of Ayn Rand…. Who is Conrad Black? This is the new rallying cry!
Well said batb!
Yuletide, you are indeed confused. Conrad Black has been exonerated of most of his charges by the US Supreme Court – i.e. he was wrongfully accused and convicted for these. The one remaining charge he is fighting.
I do not know the man other than what the “journalist” write about him. I do know he created many jobs, cleaned up the media somewhat and changed politics in this country. How many jobs have his opponents created? Have those who hate him changed anything or are they fighting to keep the status quo?
Black was convicted in a kangaroo court. The trial was a joke from start to finish. I’m glad he is out. I hope he kicks ass…
There is lots that’s dislike-able about Black but a lot to admire. He’s not a saint. But neither are any of us. To wit:
* Founded the Post and kicked of the process that tipped the media consensus somewhat away from the soft left pap that gurgles from the CBC and Torstar.
* Turned the tables on a malicious prosecution driven by a politicized prosecutor based on an unconstitutional law. What happened to Black could happen to any of us. We owe a debt of gratitude.
* His refusal to plea bargain has now been vindicated. Its easy to say “my name is not for sale”. Its tougher to accept the consequences. Black accepted the consequences.
* Used his time in prison to write a lot of really interesting articles. He also actually helped some inmates to read, write, and learn history (home many of the left leaning latte slurpers actually get their hands dirty helping the people they claim to care so much about?)
I was never more amused by the Canadian MSM when after years of slurring the American justice system, they suddenly began cheering the same system because it stepped heavily on a Canadian. In doing so, they put a glaring spotlight on their own hypocrisy.
Batb, Very well said.
I am very glad that he is achieving vindication. His only “crime” was giving voice to so many downtrodden regular Canadians who felt the nanny state was encroaching on their freedom. I once voted for Chretien, but I most regretted it when he refused permission for Black to accept hos Lordship while maintaining his citizenship. This had to be the most petty and vindictive action of any Canadian prime minister.
I didn’t follow Black’s case with a magnifying-glass, but I read maybe half of Mark Steyn’s coverage of the trial just over three years ago. (Yeah, maybe for balance’s sake I should have read some lefty enemy of Black’s, but I didn’t; so sue me. Except don’t give them ideas.)
I wish Conrad Black well. I doubt he should ever have been in jail. I’m glad Canada now has more than one national newspaper. I also admire Barbara Amiel very much; she’s one of the few interesting Canadian journalists, and she’s been on the receiving end of a lot of hatred just because she’s beautiful and successful and she headed to the right.
batb – well said.
Mack – put it in Readers Tips, preferably in some form that makes sense. (I kinda know what you’re talking about cause I sometimes read DT blogs, but really.)
My understanding was that Lord Black was “only” (it still put him in jail) convicted of USING THE MAIL to do whatever he allegedly did. Just as Martha Steward was convicted of lying about whatever she was supposed to have done, not about the deed done. huh?
Rick, ‘sorry you voted for Chretien but, hey, we’re all human!!
Those who accuse Lord Black of being “un-Canadian” should actually be accusing the Shawinigan Strangler for being, well, “un-Chretien” qui, en francais, ca va dire “un-Christian.” What kind of neanderthal PM refuses to let a Canadian citizen receive an honour from the Queeen of Canada?
We know who. Jean I’m-a-petty-mean-entitled-Son-of-a-Bitch-na-na-na-na-na Chretien. I suspect this moral pygmy’s smarmy lack of generosity and civility is going to boomerang on him. I hope it gives him a really good wump.
Don’t give a fig about greedy people.
BUT, if he’s going after “corrupt chien”, I’m in his corner!!
If Conrad Black wants revenge, he can start his lineup with an old Asshole called Chretien.
The very idea we have some of the extreme Left among us who would prefer Omar Khadr be allowed to return to Canada but not Conrad Black is a bigger concern.
Whatever else one says about Lord Black, one must give him credit for creating what was for several years the finest newspaper Canada had ever seen, the original National Post.
It was too good (and therefore expensive) to stay that way, but Black deserves credit for starting it up, and even now the National Post is the best paper in the country.
Let me understand something: Conrad Black should not be allowed back into Canada but Omar Khadr should?
Okay….
Stephen reminds us of Dominion Stores. I’d forgotten that one.
Having followed Black’s trial only cursorily, it seemed at the time he was about as guilty as Martha Stewart. Which is to say, not at all.
I’m very interested in seeing justice served, so Black’s victory in the Supreme Court is welcome.
If he comes home to Canada he can make reparation by starting up a tractor company in Brantford to replace the one he killed in the 1970’s.
As I’ve said before, a lot of people are about to discover why a non-compete agreement from Lord Black is worth so many millions of dollars.
Conrad Black has contributed a lot more to this country than a huge number of his detractors, mainly on the Left of the political spectrum.
We have a person running for his political life as leader of the LPC with an ultimate goal of leading the country who has contributed far, far less to Canada and spent most of his working life away, meaning he didn’t even pay taxes.
Chretien. Ya’ll took the word right out of my mouth. He doesn’t have to be dead. He’s already rolling.
Kory would be wise to get Conrad on board the new news venture, he’d be a great asset and he’d drive the detractors to such a state of madness they’d self destruct. What’s the word, discombobulate?
The people who want to let Omar Khadr back into the country and not Conrad Black are the very people whom Mr. Black was calling out in the National Post.
They detest him but prove him right when you stop to think about the sheer effrontery of their wanting an anti-Western terrorist, whose no-good family members are living off the largess of Canadian taxpayers, released to Canada while they want to deny entry to a man who has made a substantial contribution to our democracy by greatly broadening the perspective of what had become an extremely myopic media.
The perversion of common sense and decency in this situation is a clear indicator of just how deranged and deluded so many in our chattering classes have become. The decadence of these spawns of Trudeaupia is breathtaking.
There’s not a hell of a lot of common sense in the US Justice system either.
A lot of people are safer since Conrad Black has been banned from toting a gun as one of his bail conditions. Bloody idiots.
Welcome back Black.
Deport Chretien.
Many great comments on this threat, batb, Bart F and others. We should, all of us, be putting these sentiments into letters to Minister Kenney to indicate our support for Lord and Lady Black coming home. I`m getting to work on mine asap!
