Reader Tips

Each Monday for the rest of the summer the featured amusement will be a song about a particular city. Songs that merely mention a city, like By The Time I Get To Phoenix, won’t make the cut; the songs will in each case be paeans to the titled city itself. Tonight’s selection is exemplary in that regard, and a good place to start: from 1969, here’s Perry Como making the city of Seattle sound like it’s the greatest place on earth – in other words, like it’s not Seattle.

  1. Does the word ‘sedition’ still exist?
“Britain’s Green MP today declared her support for seven acquitted campaigners who caused £180,000 damage to an arms factory, backing their direct action.
“Caroline Lucas, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, said she was ‘absolutely delighted’ that the activists had been cleared, after successfully arguing they were seeking to stop Israeli war crimes.”
    (…)
“(Lucas said) ‘I do not advocate non-violent direct action lightly. However, in this situation it is clear the decommissioners had exhausted all democratic avenues and, crucially, that their actions were driven by the responsibility to prevent further suffering in Gaza.'”
Yes, it was a jury trial.

  2. EBD
Yes, the word exists but it carries no consequences. Otherwise all Bloc execs and MP’s would be arrested. Gee, I can dream can’t I . . .

  3. Lie back and think of Mahmood:
“Schools are being urged to rearrange tests, cancel swimming lessons and stop sex education to avoid offending Muslims during Ramadan.
“Head teachers in Stoke-on-Trent have been issued with the guidance for treatment of Muslim pupils who may still be fasting when the new term starts in September.
“But critics dismissed the advice as ‘over-zealous’ bureaucracy and said all pupils would be forced to miss out on activities as a result.”
    (…)
“Although the guidance was specifically drawn up to help Muslims, it will affect every pupil in the 89 schools in the Potteries.
“According to the last census in 2001, 3.2 per cent of the population of the city is Muslim.”

  4. Laureen Harper has managed to keep out of the MSM quite successfully, while remaining active.
    Are the PPG ignoring her?
    Or is this her choice?
She looked great during various functions over the last few weeks, but our media was pre-occupied with Michelle.
Gloria Galloway mentions a petition signed by Mrs. Harper and the hate comes out in the comments at the G&M.

I was directed to this link to find pictures of PMSH and Laureen that, of course, are not in MSM.

  5. “‘Everybody Draw Muhammad Day’ cartoonist Molly Norris was placed on an execution hit list by Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, reported the New York Daily News Monday.
“The Yemeni-American cleric Awlaki was said to have inspired the Fort Hood, Texas massacre and an attempted car bomb in Times Square. Awlaki is a 39-year-old US citizen born in New Mexico.”
    (…)
“‘The medicine prescribed by the Messenger of Allah is the execution of those involved,’ wrote Awlaki…”

  6. Revnant on David Warren @ 10:32; David is right on as usual, and thanks for the heads-up. In a recent issue of the British Spectator, journalist Charles Moore points out the same problem with newly elected Nick Clegg’s refusal to dress properly at a state opening in the new parliament. He states: A state occasion is different from one that expresses power. It is a brief moment when certain pieties take precedence over politics. Deference to these pieties is a form of humility, not servility.

  7. Am I on the wrong thread? Top asks about Canadian cities and songs about same. Comments aren’t there.
Okay, didn’t Stomping Tom do the Canadian version of “I’ve been everywhere”? If he didn’t, someone did.
Otherwise, my nomination is for Ian Tyson’s ‘The Great Canadian Tour’ (on his album O’l Ion)

  8. Given that I don’t much like cities, Seattle is an interesting place to visit. I enjoy Pikes market and enjoy walking around down along the waterfront without the beggars, druggies and hookers we get in Vancouver.
I admit my plans include Greyson Sask. once again this summer, but we can’t all live in paradise. Lighten up…and enjoy the music.

  9. Frances – I believe Stompin’ Tom did a version of “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land” Hank Snow (Canadian) did I’ve Been Every Where Man.

  10. Heard on Cramer tonight that the US economy (Industry) is waiting for the White House to issue a Cease Fire in the War against Corporate Industry. Cramer said the US will continue to lag Europe in recovery until that happens. Unemployment will continue to rise until companies know what hiring will cost.

  11. I remember a while ago you outed the NDP for online poll manipulation… I just made a comment on the following website that outs the NDP for their hypocrisy in attempting to manipulate Saskatchewan Labour to say NO to Bill 80 while implementing and supporting an immigration program that has brought in between 3000 and 10,000 foreign workers every year. My comment was tagged 1640 – lets see if it’s censored.
    http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?bt2009&1
The hypocrisy is this: How can you complain about a few hundred non-Saskatchewan workers from other provinces working in Saskatchewan under Bill 80 but ignore the giant elephant in the room and even support the maniacal importing of 10,000 foreign (even non-Canadian) workers pouring in to take Saskatchewan jobs??? Now that’s hypocrisy.

  12. “According to the last census in 2001, 3.2 per cent of the population of the city is Muslim.”
Not to worry. With them being so willing to bend they should be up to 20% in another year. They won’t even recognize their town by then.

  13. HEY KATE you should google your blog the first article is someone bashing your blog lol it say’s “you can victimize the readers of sda all you want but you do not speak for the people of saskatchewan” lol just thought i would share that with you .lol.

    “Canada Cautious with Haiti Funding
Canadian officials are calling for a meeting with former US President Bill Clinton to get a first-hand briefing on the pace of reconstruction in Haiti.
Canada will soon deliver its first $30 million cheque to the Haitian Reconstruction Fund following the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January.
The Federal Government committed a $400-million pledge over two-years to help Haiti rebuild.
International Co-Operation Minister Bev Oda and Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon want to meet with Clinton after he expressed displeasure with the pace of reconstruction in Haiti.”

  15. This POS failed Nigerian refugee, HIV positive, with a false passport was ordered deported but then murders a young woman after raping her in July 2006. Here we are 4 years later after a 13 month trial when he had already admitted he stabbed her to death. It has cost us taxpayers over $2 million dollars just to get to jury deliberations. This useless waste of air has fired 5 lawyers already!
The insanity of our “justice” system never ends.

“Diabetes Drug Maker Hid Test Data on Risks, Files Indicate
In the fall of 1999, the drug giant SmithKline Beecham secretly began a study to find out if its diabetes medicine, Avandia, was safer for the heart than a competing pill, Actos, made by Takeda.
Avandia’s success was crucial to SmithKline, whose labs were otherwise all but barren of new products. But the study’s results, completed that same year, were disastrous. Not only was Avandia no better than Actos, but the study also provided clear signs that it was riskier to the heart.
But instead of publishing the results, the company spent the next 11 years trying to cover them up, according to documents recently obtained by The New York Times. The company did not post the results on its Web site or submit them to federal drug regulators, as is required in most cases by law. ”

  17. How about an on-topic comment? 🙂
For “municipal music”, IMO the Gold Standard is Tony Bennett singing “I left my heart in San Francisco”!
I love most of Perry Como’s songs but Tony Bennett definitely comes out tops comparing his San Francisco song to Como’s “Seattle”.
(I lived in northern Calif. for nearly 20 yrs, a couple hrs. drive from SF. Love Tony’s song but I’m not saying that San Francisco isn’t the land of fruits and nuts. 🙂

A group of lifelong Democrats recently produced a compelling documentary allleging rampant voter fraud by the Obama campaign during the 2008 election.
    Doug Ross reported:
Referring to the controversial 2008 Democrat presidential primary, Carolyn Tackett asks, “Was Barack Obama selected rather than elected?.”
Fox & Friends had an explosive interview with Gigi Gaston, a writer/director who has made a documentary outlining the rampant voter fraud perpetrated by the Obama campaign during the 2008 primaries against Hillary Clinton. 21. EBD, thanks for this very pleasant memory. I’m almost glad you chose this rather than “Seattle” by Public Image Ltd.; although the latter is one of my faves, it’s a song of very different character, and certainly not as charming as this one.

Atheists love aliens because they always assume that, a) brainy creatures gushing out of every galactic cranny shows that Earth is low-rent cosmic real estate, and b) the smartest aliens will be atheists. Against this giddy optimism, the famous physicist Enrico Fermi asked a quite innocent question: If Earth is a typical planet, and there are lots of planets in the universe, then why haven’t any extraterrestrial critters dropped by, or even sent us a text message (“ur nt solo, n btw ur nt vry smrt”)?”

  24. Here is an excellent article on the end game for the well and the
technology in place to pull it off.
    From Drilling Ahead
    http://www.drillingahead.com/forum/topics/bp-relief-wellswhat-is-a
A relief well is not drilled to “relieve pressure and reduce flow of oil”,
This seems to be the most common misconception. The sole purpose of a relief well is to kill the well completely. To accomplish this the relief well has to drill directly into the 7″ casing of the blowout well at a depth of 18,000′. When this happens, a ‘window” is cut into the 7″ casing of the blowout well and heavy mud is forced into its wellbore. The heavy mud is calculated to counteract the force of the flow in the blowout well, In this case it should be between 14.4 ppg and 15 ppg.
The article isn’t that long and the embedded vids are great at showing what they are trying to accomplish and previous successes.

  25. Could there be a parallel between The Way of the Cuckoo and modern suicidal muslim immigration. Sultan Knish, whose site you should definitely bookmark, thinks so.
    SELECTED SNIPS
    – The common cuckoo has a very simple reproductive strategy. It lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, which then drive out the chicks of that bird’s own species. Instead the bird raises the cuckoo’s young as its own. The name for this sort of behavior is brood parasitism. Which is a name that we should be very familiar with as our society has fallen victim to it.
    – With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”.
The key phrase here is “yearning to breathe free”. Immigration only works when the people immigrating want to do so in order to gain freedom by it. Not when they want to continue living as they did before.
    – That is the crisis that much of the civilized world faces today as their population is being replaced by the cuckoos, from eggs that their own social systems have sat on, warmed and hatched. A false sense of altruism serves as the misplaced instinct dooming these countries, even as cynical lefty politicians exploit the cuckoo’s eggs for a short term voting base and solution to socialism’s shortfalls, while the long term is still Enoch Powell’s rivers of blood.
    – Birds who wish to survive drive off the cuckoos before they can lay their eggs in their nests. And if not, they toss those eggs out before they hatch. If they fail to do this, then their species will have to make way for the cuckoos.

  26. Robert J. Avrech at Seraphic Secret:
“One of the most cherished myths of liberals/leftists/progressives is that criticism of Israel should not be equated with Jew-hatred. It’s just, uh, constructive criticism, or, and this is my favorite, tough love. Sort of like a man who beats his wife to a pulp and claims that he does it because he loves her so much.
“In short, these critics love Israel so much that they spend every minute of every day pondering—actually, inventing—the Jewish State’s numerous crimes.”
    (…)
“For instance, nine Turkish Jew-hating Muslims are killed by the IDF in self-defense. Liberals/leftists/progressives go nuts. But in that month alone 50,000 men, women and children have been murdered in Congo. And in the Arab/Muslim world we can’t even count the number of women murdered by their fathers, brothers or mothers in so-called honor killings. And of course in Gaza, Hamas has most certainly tortured and murdered far more than nine people – in any month. And just yesterday, in Uganada, over 74 innocents were slaughtered by Al Shabab, Muslim terrorists, in three synchronized bombings.
“Where is the storm of outrage?
    “Is the U.N. calling a special session?…”

  27. A twofer:
    1) Excerpt from a June 15 televised interview with co-founder and leader of Hamas Mahmoud Al Zahhar:
“We have liberated Gaza, but have we recognized Israel? Have we given up our lands occupied in 1948? We demand the liberation of the West Bank, and the establishment of a state in the West Bank and Gaza, with Jerusalem as its capital – but without recognizing [Israel]. This is the key – without recognizing the Israeli enemy on a single inch of land.
“This is our plan for this stage – to liberate the West Bank and Gaza, without recognizing Israel’s right to a single inch of land, and without giving up the Right of Return for a single Palestinian refugee.
    […]
“Our plan for this stage is to liberate any inch of Palestinian land, and to establish a state on it. Our ultimate plan is [to have] Palestine in its entirety. I say this loud and clear so that nobody will accuse me of employing political tactics. We will not recognize the Israeli enemy. ”
“As for the issue of a referendum – [the Palestinian Authority] is ready to impose its position on people by force. Whoever wants to hold a referendum, and believes that he can get all of Palestine for the Palestinians, can hold a referendum, but will not give up the platform of resistance, and the plan to liberate Palestine in its entirety. This is unequivocal.”

    2) “Germany has banned an organization that directly supports Hamas in Gaza.
“In a statement issued Monday, Germany’s Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere of the Christian Democratic Union announced that his office had banned the Frankfurt-based International Humanitarian Aid Organization, or IHH, effective immediately.
With millions of dollars in donations each year, IHH in Germany directly supports Hamas, ‘whose charter denies Israel’s right to exist and promotes the use of violence to achieve its political and religious goals,’ the statement read in part.
“‘Organizations that operate from German soil, directly or indirectly, with the aim of fighting Israel’s right to exist, have forfeited their right to freedom of association,’ it concluded.”

“Pakistan No.1 in the world in pornographic internet searches
THEY may call it the “Land of the Pure”, but Pakistan turns out to be anything but.
The Muslim country, which has banned content on at least 17 websites to block offensive and blasphemous material, is the world’s leader in online searches for pornographic material.
Google ranks Pakistan No.1 in the world in searches for pornographic terms, outranking every other country in searches per person for certain sex-related content, FOXNews.com said.
Pakistan has ranked No.1 in searches per-person for …”
“The country has also been No.1 in searches for “sex”, “c….”
“According to Gabriel Said Reynolds, professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Pakistan’s monitoring and banning of websites is not part of a government effort to censor the Pakistani people, but one to shut out the rest of the world.
“(It) could lead to conversion, which would undermine the very order of the state,” he said. “Part of protecting the society is making sure that there is no way it could be undermined in terms of foreign influences.”
And while Pakistan is taking measures to prevent blasphemous material from being viewed by its citizens, pornographic material is “certainly” contradictory to Islam, too, Professor Reynolds said.
The country’s punishment for those charged with blasphemy is execution, but the question remains what – if anything – can be done about people who search for porn on the web.
“It’s a new phenomenon,” Professor Reynolds said.”
