Take Me, Obama

Poor baby. Can Uncle Jeffrey give you a hug?

The United States gave itself the most gifted President in several generations, handed his party a majority in both houses of Congress, only to watch his presidency be swamped by the doleful legacy of the Bush years, a worldwide recession and its parlous aftermath, and a ferocious Republican opposition bent on a search-and-destroy mission of his presidency.

After all, it’s Pride Week.

  1. “We can only hope that our American friends…”
Notice, to the left, we are not related anymore, just merely “friends” .

  2. Simpson is barely aware of his surroundings at this point. I think he just – vaguely – catches snippets of MSNBC broadcasts while the staff are bringing him his pancakes, and then skims the headlines at Huffington Post before he takes his nap.
Seriously, what makes Obama “the most gifted President in several generations”? In all that typing, Simpson doesn’t even vaguely hint as to what these – apparently – remarkable qualities are.
Simpson might have been seen to be credible in the Liberal heyday because his bland regurgitation of the Toronto-Liberal viewpoint was attached, by his lip, to something resembling power, but even then you got the sense that he was hired because of his expertise in, erm, polishing the bishop in the knave after-hours. At this point in time it’s just pointless, vaguely-anachronistic puffery. He’s just a decomposing uber-Liberal who supports whoever he perceives as having the Grand Vision thing he remembers so fondly.

  3. LOL “ferocious Republican opposition”
Seems to me that it’s something to be admired when Liberals are opposing effectively (the Rat Pack). Suddenly it’s a bad thing. You’d even have thunk there’s never been a recession before this one. Or that Obama has played no part in making this one worse than most.

  4. I’m sure our neighbours celebrated a bitter sweet “Independence Day” today. They are rapidly losing any independence and becoming more dependant on government handouts, and stimulus packages. It will be a miracle if they recover from the damage this “leader” has done.

  5. The only joy I got out of the link was seeing the pithy comments from the ‘Drudgealanche.’

  6. Retail expert: “He is Mr. Mass Destruction. I mean he is a human destroyer. This guy has spent his way into oblivion and we don’t have a budget. He is surrounded by a bunch of complete incompetents, led by himself, and he’s spending like crazy, and we keep digging the hole bigger.”
    Sums it up, I’d say.

There’s an old saw, variations of which go “America is like a sleeping dinosaur. Slow to wake, almost requiring you to whack off its tail before it recognizes the danger. But once awake, it will rampage over anything in its way.” This is the whack to the tail that is waking us up. It’s why I actually wanted Obama to win over McCain (though I couldn’t bring myself to cast a vote for the Zero, so I abstained from the presidential election in 2008).
It is a bittersweet 4th indeed. Bitter for all that we have lost, not just in the past two years, but the past seventy. Sweet for the battle is now joined, and we will emerge victorious.

  8. The Simpson is so po’ed !! His Prez is going down. Climate alarmism is going down. But what I suspect really sticks in Simpson’s craw – his book on global warming is going down as the big fraud is exposed. In fact, those (few) copies out in the public domain could be ‘Exhibit A’ someday.
Who is braying at the moon now, Jeff? (Check your emails of July 22 2008 under ‘Brinkmanship’. You’re welcome)

  9. In what lefty buddle does this loon reside and what the He!! is he smokin’?
The only tired card he didn’t play was the race card……
I suspect he is merely representative of that inplacable/blind small corps of support the “Won” still has.
I suspect he also didn’t notice the Cold War is over and his side lost.

  10. Loved the comment from The Oatmeal Savage:’Holy freaking fellatio Jeffery! Now that’s what I call a man-crush on Obama!’

  11. Not point calling a spade a shovel here, Simpson is an insufferable ass. What exactly Mr Man, has the chosen one done that is soooo friggin terrific? The ability too read prepared scripts off a tele- prompter that some one else wrote, isn’t a point of merit. Obama has although, increased the national debt massively, expanded Government exponentially, reduced liberty across the board and indebted generations too come. He hasn’t done a single thing praise worthy and that’s being generous. This guy makes Jimmy Carter look stellar. No worries though Mr Jeffery Doffus Simpson, Obama will force through Cap and Trade or some other hellishly moronic bill driving the US economy further backward and hammer through immigration reform and Simpson will still blame Bush.

  12. I wish our American friends a Happy Independence Day. Hopefully they can take it back.

  13. I watched a bit of the CBC coverage of the G8/G20.
Mansbridge described O as a rock star.
    Where was the objectivity?
    He’s not a rock star.
He’s a borrow and spend president that the CBC finds itself ideologically in line with.
I find it so hard to watch the CBC.
Even though I can filter it through the bile that rises in my throat.
And I can’t wait for SunTV.

  14. Examples of why this man might be the most gifted president are surely to follow.
After all, M. Simpson is a journalist, not an advocate, correct??

  15. “The United States gave itself the most gifted President in several generations”
Several generations? If a generation is between 20-30 years, Simpson is talking about, at a minimum, the last 60 years going back to Harry Truman.

  16. “…the most gifted President in several generations…”
Oh really? This dude can’t balance a check book, can’t deliver a speech without a teleprompter, can’t golf or shoot hoops worth a damn, hell, he can’t even play the sax. Just what is his gift anyhow?

  17. Just what is his gift anyhow?

Our Presidents gift was the Nobel Peace Prize — not for something he did — but in anticipation of something he was yet to do.
    Resolve world peace!
And so he accepted his gift at the Nobel Prize ceremonies in Oslo, Norway. Obama won a Peace Prize — which is no small feat — and at the same time he escalated the war in Afghanistan, agreeing to send 30,000 more American troops, which of course will mean troops from other countries as well — including Canada. Which has already lost?- 153 Canadian lives.

    Hey back off-
He is working really hard on his golf game.

  18. The only sense in which the empty suit in the White House is even the most gifted President since Bill Clinton is that the majority of those who voted in the Presidential election in 2008 made him a gift of the Presidency, an office for which he wasn’t and isn’t remotely qualified, a fact which he has demonstrated every day since his inauguration.
What a maroon (you can apply that to both Simpson and the empty suit in the White House).

  19. The article was bad enough but I started reading some comments and started to become physically ill. Now, apparently, anyone who disagrees with them on either side of the border or anywhere else is a “teabagger”. God preserve us from the brain dead left.

  20. Oblamebush’s list of accomplishments is almost as long as Mr. Ziffy’s electoral triumphs over PM Harper.

  21. So we’re teabaggers now too huh?
God. This is going to be fun when they smack into the brick wall.
I put forward the motion that Millhaven be renamed to “Liberal Retirement Center for the Treatment of Mental-Illness”
    Anyone to second?

  22. I’m not surprized The old Grope & Bail’s J. Simpson would make yet again another, mainstream, totally contrary to majority public opinion of covered Country, pure Canadiana liberal metropolitan pro Obama/left field Democrat fluff piece that is perfectly suited for the brainless shopping centre zombie soccer mom quickly glancing through her equally clueless husband’s “news” paper .
Most such Canuckian creatures haven’t even started to realize Obama is an abject Presidential failure with dwindling public support now under 50% . An alien to core American values and principals that is now increasingly viewed as it’s worst commander in chief ever.

  23. “The United States gave itself the most gifted President in several generations”
I think Simpson means it in the Gay sense,as he’s obviously one of the MSM’s “puppy love” of Obama reporters.
Courageous of Simpson to come out of the closet at his age.

  24. I seriously question Jeffrey Simpson’s soundness of mind for naming Barak Obama “the most gifted President in several generations.” Where the hell is his HEAD?
Hasn’t he read about the Obamessiah’s faux “accomplishments” in his hopey-changey “community organization” work in Chicago with terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernadette Dorhn, at the Harvard Law Review, where he dropped in occasionally but never contributed so much as a paragraph to the august publication, his 47 “present” votes in the Senate, etc., etc.
What’s “most gifted” about any of these gigs?
Maybe Mr. Simpson could change the United States to Canada, President to Prime Minister, majority to minority, House of Congress to House of Commons, Bush years to the Three Amigos Trudeau, Chretien, and Martin, ferocious Republican opposition to the corrupt Troika of Twits, search-and-destroy mission to stonewall-and-lie mission, and presidency to his government. Let’s see what that would look like:
Canada gave itself the most gifted Prime Minister in several generations, handed his party a minority in the HOC, only to watch the attempt to swamp his government on the part of the doleful legacy of the Three Amigos, Trudeau, Chretien, and Martin, a worldwide recession and its parlous aftermath, and a corrupt Troika of Twits bent on a stonewall-and-lie mission to unseat his government.
There! I’ve handed Mr. Simpson his next article which at least would be closer to reality than this fantasy he’s dreamed up. What’s the Probe and Fail paying him for? To play outrider for the American president and paper over his gargantuan personal and presidential deficits?

  25. I like this paragraph:
It had been hoped, for example, by those who want action on climate change that the U.S. Senate might produce an energy and environment bill that the President could sign. Nothing seems likely now, given the stout opposition of the Republicans to any serious measures, including a cap-and-trade system. Democrats, too, are divided, with legislators from the coal- and oil-producing states protecting their industries. One of these Democrats just died, Senator Robert Byrd, a pork-barreler par excellence from West Virginia, who used to oppose action against acid rain.
It seems the worst thing JS can remember Senator Byrd doing is opposing environmental regulation.
An American friend of mine recently referred to the late Senator as “Ole Bedsheets”. It seems Byrd has another legacy.

  26. When I read this column, it suddenly seemed to me that the foreign agents being sneered at by the Canadian MSM are really no big deal. I mean, the MSM is WAY out in front of those guys on the “destroy the West” curve, eh? Boris and Natasha are -sprinting- to try and catch up but still falling behind.
Run faster Boris, or Jeffrey Simpson is going to lap you.

  27. Simpson can’t seem to wait to turn Canada into a Venezuela north. Can’t seem to finish reading any of his articles anymore without heading for the big white telephone to upchuck.

  28. “The United States gave itself the most gifted President in several generations…”
Simpson is guilty of assuming as axiomatic that which still remains a hypothesis.
Also, he’s b-o-r-i-n-g and largely unreadable. Why-oh-why can’t the Canadian blathersphere ever produce really interesting and engagingly infuriating folks like Camille Paglia* and Chris Hitchens?
Instead the Mop and Pail gives us the mulch and tedium of Jeffrey.
Still, I suppose it could be much worse: there’s always the soporific Rick Salutin or the awful Thomas Walkom over at the People’s Daily Star…
    * No, Heather Mallick, you are no Camille.

  29. As far as I can make out, Jeffrey Simpson is a silver-spoon-in-mouth, establishment journo, like so many in Canada’s media: born in NYC in 1949, attended University of Toronto Schools (a TO private school), attended Queen’s, one of the most popular destinations of the elites (disclaimer: my sister went to Queen’s), worked from 1972 – 1973 as a Parliamentary Intern in Ottawa for Ed Broadbent. In 1974, he joined The Globe and Mail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Simpson).
Hmmmm. ‘All the hallmarks of a progressive: elite, entitled member of the chattering classes, WORKED for the NDP’s Ed Broadbent when an impressionable youth, has been at the Probe and Fail for far too long: 36 years!
No wonder he writes the way he does! Poor baby, indeed!

  30. To all my Southeast Asian combat vets,
    Happy Forth and remember-
“As we slid down the banisters of life Obama will only be a splinter in our ass.”

  31. “The local government is corrupt. The war is lost.”
Where have we heard this before? How can a war be lost to a bunch of religious fanatics who have to “employ” local labour even in the south to set their bombs?
What the left means is lose the war right NOW Obama and blame it all on Bush. “O” thought he could get tough over the border and then the Pakistan ICC/Taliban would sit down and be quiet for a year while he declared victory then packed up and left. The war is nothing but a hindrance to his domestic agenda and is to be terminated soonest. But what is important to the islamists is showing they defeated the “Great Satan” on the battlefield and jihad must now escalate to a worldwide frenzy producing victory everywhere.

  32. “handed his party a majority in both houses”
    “a ferocious Republican opposition”
    *sigh*
Does Jeffery even proofread his drivel? Look, Jeff buddy, let me point something out to you. The Dems had the White House. They had the senate — filibuster-proof at that for the first 12 months. They had congress. AND THEY BARELY GOT THEIR OWN FREAKIN’ HEALTH CARE BILL PASSED.
Republican opposition may be ferocious as far as it goes, but is largely toothless since they hold none of the three branches of government.
How stupid are these libtard writers? Don’t answer that…it was a rhetorical question.

  33. “Republican opposition may be ferocious as far as it goes, but is largely toothless since they hold none of the three branches of government.”
Yes, and Simpson appears to have missed the point too.
Ferocious political opposition of any kind in a democracy is not a bug.
    It’s a feature.

  34. About a year ago, a very prominent, widely read Canadian Journalist wrote to me;
“Yep, I know all about it. When Kate conks you, you hear about it.”
We all know! that Jeffy has a bump on his head this morning.

  35. I went to high school with Jeff Simpson (UTS, in Toronto, late ’60s) and he was just as much an off-base pompous gasbag even then. He’s been a leftist, know-it-all old fart since he was a kid … the sort of twerp (model UN; debating team; Esperanto Society; Latin club; etc.) that the jocks used to put into a locker after school until his wimpering attracted a janitor to let him out. Today we’d be suspended for bullying, but as you can plainly see he NEEDED a kick in the ass back then, and he still does.

  36. Gifted?
After a year of Obama I’ve actually come to appreciate the moderation, political savvy, and executive experience of Bill Clinton.
I’m also beginning to think a Hillary presidency would have been an improvement. The worst part of a bad president is not their policies, but the people they appoint to key positions of power and influence. With Hillary we would have gotten party aparatchiks. With Obama we got Chicago thugs, leftist radicals, and incompetent non-profit administrators. Even the distinguished scholars he’s appointed have demonstrated how far removed from reality the Ivory Tower is.
Where are Hubert Humphrey, Harry Truman, and Jack Kennedy when you need them? Oh, they’re all dead.

  37. “We all know! that Jeffy has a bump on his head this morning.”
You mean the bump that he gets from bowing deeply to the picture of TOTUS that he taped on his bathroom mirror?

  38. Reading the openning lines, I assumed the post came from a fringe left-wing US blog. It confirms how far the G&M has deteriorated in recent years.
A hallmark of all previous US Presidents is a basic respect for the office, and the convention that the previous President would not be blamed, or even mentioned after the new administration was in office. With Obama, and his supporters, all this is out the window. After 1 1/2 years in power, mistakes are still the fault of G W Bush.
For the causes of the recession, there is plenty
of blame to go around, starting with congress and its desire to see mortgages made easily available to all Americans. The problems with Fannie May Fannie Mac go back several administrations, it is absurd to claim the recession on the last administration holding the bag.
Jeffrey Simpson should know better and I suspect he does. If not, the editors at Canada’s National Newspaper should.

  39. JJM @10:08 – “No, Heather Mallick, you are no Camille (Paglia).”
    That’s putting it mildly.

  40. Jeffrey has been living in his own little echo chamber for some time now.

  41. Jeffrey has been living in his own little echo chamber for some time now.

  42. Another lefty loon stuck on the FM ( F-Moron) frequency. The deformity of his thoughts reflect the growing lunacy in the Marxist World.
I think we ought to horde Lithium, when true reality hits these lotus eaters.

  43. ‘Course, Simpson has every right to an opinion.
And we have every right to ours about his.
Let’s be thankful for one thing:
We don’t pay him to spew baldfaced Obammunist propaganda like a good little Useful Idiot. Thank goodness he’s not at the CBC.
If the Globe and Mail wants to employ open propagandists, that’s their business. And their ultimate demise.

  44. Couldn’t be that the Yanks elected a useless boob with a good PR department, I suppose, eh Jeff? No, didn’t think so.
