Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Sooo true.
If only Quebec would just go … just shut up and go. But, alas, there is little chance of that because who would pay for its $7-a-day daycare if the flow of money from the ROC turned off. So if we want to be rid of these spoiled children of confederation, we will have to boot them out. The sooner the better.
You know, the Bloc may claim that the rejection of a fully bilingual supreme court, says to Quebecers that ‘We in Canada don’t like you’. This of course is an emotional reduction and a diversion from the reality of what type of bilingualism is required to accurately review legal cases in both languages.
But the rejection by Quebec of the use of English in Quebec, their insistence on unilingualism within Quebec and their insistence that officials outside of Quebec be bilingual is a clear statement by Quebec to the rest of Canada: “We don’t like you”.
Diverting this issue to emotions is a travesty. The real issue is the nature of bilingualism and the competence required for a court to understand, after all, the material it must evaluate!
It is naive, it is unrealistic to consider that someone brought up outside of Quebec, not hearing or using French, could readily become bilingual. It is offensive to ask that someone with their education in the universities outside of Quebec, in English, could develop a legal use of the French language sufficient to evaluate complex legal issues.
Such a demand would, as it has done in our government, reduce the eligible individuals to a handful located..guess where…in that Golden Zone of Montreal-Ottawa-Quebec.
Is that what Canada defines itself as? Government by an elite Set located in one area of the nation?
“If Quebec were independent there would be no discussion about a bilingual Supreme Court, that’s one of the new arguments from the Bloc Quebecois.”
“IF” Quebec were to separate – in that statement, ladies and gents, lies all the hypocricy of a party that is purportedly for separation, but receives all of it’s largesse from the very institution it proclaims it wishes to separate from.
Separate? As if. Where would their paycheque come from?
Pity no one has the balls to call their bluff.
Pundit asks:
“The benefit for Duceppe is obvious, the question is, what is in it for the Liberals and NDP?”
The Gift of the Northern Magoose, aka PET:
Voila! The Separatist Coalition.
James Moore is correct. The passing of legislation calling for the appointment of only bilingual SC judges would divide the country even further.
ET suggests that “the eligible individuals to a handful located..guess where…in that Golden Zone of Montreal-Ottawa-Quebec”. ET is right.
Furthermore, I suspect that this is exactly what the Liberals would like…that is to marginalize and exclude Canadians that live outside the Golden Zone.
I have to echo JMD, “If only Quebec would just go”.
Judging by that map image, PEI is going to be completely removed…
I think it’s time for some “Quebec” flag burnings all across Canada … just to get the parasites all worked up … lots of CBC moments to give them the “push” they need. It’s time there was a Quebec separation party … but this time made up entirely of Anglophones. Either that, or take a massive dose of de-wormer … and just keep bending over. The entire Canadian voting public is being held hostage by the parasites, and Ottawa politicians are worst of the whores … willing to hand out just about any insult to the rest of Canada to get Quebec votes. What a racket.
The French have been taking over this country since That POS Trudeau made it possible for them to do so.
It was gradual, but now if you want to get anywhere in ANY federal institution you must be a Frenchman who speaks some English and not the reverse.
The way the Quebec gradually took control of Canada is the same as will happen when there are enough Islamists in Canada to take it from the French.
It’s all unfolding as it should because we are too stupid, meek and PC beaten to do anything about it.
Iggy is the gift that keeps on giving, long may he continue to deteriorate the LPC to a 30 seat GTA rump.
Another fractious issue to further divide both his party and this dwindling support.
Gotta love it when a Librano leader is on a self destruction trip.
Quebec please separate.
Thanks!
If is is necessary for SC Judges to understand both French and English to better do their jobs then the best option is to provide an education program so that they learn that language but not as a precondition to get the job. I know for sure that most senior executives that are transfered overseas, because of there abilities, are expected to learn the local language and culture and they are given the resources to do so.
I was watching Hockey Night in Canada a few days ago – the Philly Montreal series. During the second intermission, Ron MacLean talked to Ken Dryden. Ken came across sounding good (I never really heard him speak before) and in front of a national audience. I predict that Ken Dryden will replace Iggy pretty soon because even Libs can’t handle Iggy anymore.
Initially, I mused that this was an ideal wedge issue for the Conservatives. I bounced the following idea off Adler and Gormley:
Once the Bilingual Judges bill is passed, the Conservatives should then forward a confidence bill in the HoC to renege previous bill. This should spark an election on an emotional issue that I suspect the vast majority of Canadians could side with the Conservatives.
Both Adler and Gormley though my idea was political suicide for the Conservatives. Although I don’t quite get it, I’m willing to defer to superior political opinion.
Does anyone have any thoughts on my proposed strategy?
I vote for ciseaux rouillés.
If I thought for one minute that the BLOQ was committed to complete and utter separation, they’d have my political donation in a heartbeat.
I moved out of Quebec over 10 years ago.
My uncle is a RABID Seperatist. When I told him that the shortest route to Quebec sovereignty was to “let the rest of Canada vote in a referendum” he found it necessary to disagree.
Apparently it’s a matter of “You can’t kick me out: I’m leaving!”
I could only shrug and walk away.
Ah yes, the old whine about how if we let Quebec separate we can just forget bilingualism and became an english-only country. One thing Bloc-heads and Western bumpkins can agree on is that Quebec is where the French is, and the rest of Canada is English from top to bottom. Don’t believe this, its BS. Live in Eastern Ontario/Western Quebec for a while and you’ll realize that there are many anglo Quebeckers and many franco Ontarians. A border is just a line on a map.
As for the bill, its completely stupid. I would rather have expert legal translators take the burden of translation, so the judges can listen, think, and reason in their mother tongue. If we expect this advanced level of bilingualism from judges, we’ll end up stacking the court with judges from Ottawa and Montreal.
Based on source and use of (transfer payment) funds accounting, Quebec is a “kept” French Poodle of Alberta. Alberta needs to jerk their leash now and again to keep them in line. As nanny / welfare state addicts, the Quebecois can only bark, there is no bite. As stray dogs, they would become very shrivelled and lean and ANGLO!.
Okay, I confess ignorance. I haven’t been paying attention to the news for days. What does Iggy have to do with this?
the new tactic by the socialist & liberals are to create Wedge Issues, Why?
Because they Do Not have any other to critique the govt.
Who would have thought that the abortion issue would ever come to light again after What? 20yrs of rest, The liberals brought this up, create a issue that will cause friction for the Conservatives throughout the country.
The NDP the lanquage issue, attempts to tar & feather & say see conservatives are racist. What have all the questions in QP been for this session, Wedge issues. However it is started to resonate on canadians get back to the main issues, So what did we see yesterday Ignatieff leading with an economy question.
In fact The PM thanked Ignatieff yesterday in QP for finaly asking a question on the economy.
I believe we are going to now see the leaders staying more with the economy while leaving the wedge issue questions to the backbenchers inorder to retain that line of disruption.
When the libs & ndp feel they have created enough you will see a coalition formed & the writ dropped I would suspect in the fall.
“What does Iggy have to do with this?”
As party leader, he is responsible for the actions of his MP’s.
‘If Quebec were independent there would be no discussion about a bilingual Supreme Court’.
True. Because once Quebec is an independent country, it will have its own high appellate court and, without any more cases coming from Quebec, there will be no need for the Supreme Court of Canada to hear cases in any language other than English.
Au revoir, Monsieur Duceppe!
cconn at 11:13 AM:
Ken Dryden was a great hockey player and Canadian hockey hero.
As a politician, though, he doesn’t even make mediocre.
Which, in keeping with Liberal tradition, should make him a favourite to win their next leadership contest. If they actually hold one.
South Africa has 11 official languages.
Jon: South Africa has 11 official languages.
============================
And justices on the South African supreme court speak all 11 of them?
I don’t have a problem with it…
…so long as every single judge, justice of the peace and what have you in Quebec has to meet the same extreme standard of bilingualism.
I mean, I might get a speeding ticket in Tabernac PQ some day, and I want the judge to understand every little cultural nuance of my lame excuse. Its simply my right as a Canadian.
I’ve had it up to my eyeballs with this.
Jurisprudence shouldn’t be placed in the hands of a fraction of people. The Bloc damn well know that this is about putting power into THEIR hands. What selfish people they are! Are not the Inuit people a part of Canada? New immigrants? English speakers? What a naked power grab it is!
Furthermore, the immigrants that ARE replacing the numbers the Quebecois are happily killing off do not support or reflect Quebecois culture. I’d stick with saving Quebecois culture within their own boundaries, not demand everyone embrace it or else.
This is not about creating a “bilingual” court. The court is, has always been, and is likely to continue indefinitely to be, bilingual.
This is about creating a court composed exclusively of Frenchmen.
I think we should have a national referendum on if we want Quebec to stay or go. I know where my vote goes. So long, good bye, adios. And I have a french heritage.
I see this as just more of the same from the usual suspects. Quebec francophones demanding special status or else there’ll be…trouble. I say go to hell !! Canada is not a bilingual country, the imposing of French is simply that, an imposition. Big gay Pierre imposes the languages act and “viola” we’re french. One day we’re an English nation and the next we’re french. Piss off already!! Stop waisting our money on french colonialism and special status for French speakers. When do we finally say, enough. Stop the blackmail, and the identity politics, the cultural wars, and the massive spending on something that is a complete waist of money and time. Bilingualism is the constant race card, a divisive tool used by racists and bigots to suit their own specious agenda. How long will we spend 100’s of billions of dollars to francocize an historically English nation ? I’ll say it again… go away already, and take you’re manufactured, divisive, tribal politics with you.
I wonder how it would work if the rest of us voted to separate from Quebec. Let them worry about negotiating a fair settlement of the national debt.
I for one am pro -Quebec independance. KICK THEM OUT OF CANADA!
The aim of official bilingualism has been to change the working language of the federal government to French. That is why you need to be bilingual if you are an anglophone applicant and are deemed to be bilingual if you are a francophone applicant. That phase has been completed as evidenced by the language most used in committees while 80% of this country in onglophone.
The next step has always been to block out non-French applicants. This, in essence, means that bilingual is not good enough. Demanding only francophone judges is in line with that philosophy. The competency of the judges in English is not a concern for eventually we will all be under Napoleonic law.
The next step is to ensure that ALL provincial jobs are reflective of the French fact for each province.
Speak up my friends to stop the Supreme Court phase AND save our British heritage – the one that created Canada as evidenced by the British North America Act.
Bilingualism can be a trap – and I’m bilingual! I used to read the various Canadian Forces orders in French and compare them to the English version. There were some howlers; Argentia (Nfld) became Argentina as an isolated post, aircrew wings became ‘brevet de pilot’ exempting navigators, flight engineers and AESOps from various obligations. The finest was an infantry manual where ‘cock your rifle’ became an obscene act involving a weapon. If you used the French version of the Explosive Ordnance Demolition manual you blew yourself up – I don’t know if it was translated by an Anglophone bigot or an incompetent Francophone. I don’t want a supreme court that confuses a pen one writes with a ‘pen’ one is locked up in!
“may he continue to deteriorate the LPC to a 30 seat GTA rump”
I do hope voters in TO are paying attention to this one. This crass play for votes in Quebec has Libs betraying the interests of their own constituents.
As the federal government’s policy was mentioned by several posters it fits into the discussion I was having driving one of the technicians here in Toronto for the G20 conference. He noted as a senior technician there was no job openings any higher in the chain as you had to speak French to get them and he was very frustrated by this.
Years ago our company had several Quebec divisions and we would, in Toronto, ask them to translate company communications. There was always squabbles as the translations were never the same. As one of my peers from Quebec, who was fluently bilingual stated, English is an exact language and very specific whereas French is flowery and depends on the day what words are used in translations.
Hope Harper keeps saying to Deceit that if Canada is divisable Quebec is too. Deceit may not like the new Quebec borders.
the peckerhead from Batuurst, Godin, was on my radio today saying he doesn’t expect full bilingualism from SC judges, just a kind-of working grasp(I wonder if his bill actually states that?). He sounded amiable, in that downeast way, tho somewhat clueless.
This Court would naturally end up fully Francphoney.
Just like most government departments including the RCMP. We all know how that has ended?
As we have seen in EVERY institution its been instigated or agitated for.
It soon becomes filled with Marxist carpet baggers from Quebec.
This in a Nation that speaks almost exclusively English.
Its a recipe for suicide. Good thing the West is well on its way from disengaging from this madness.
Particularly when the French themselves are going extinct by not having children.
Is their any petition online I can sign asking Quebec to please leave or make good on threats to separate?
JMO
“I’ll take a wild bet and say that Godin is fooling himself….”
Kinda summarizes the whole thing…. No?
Every time I meet a British soldier, I thank him for his Army’s defeat of my country’s Army at the Battle of Quebec. Would you kindly consider invading Detroit?
The only thing that makes me more grateful is that after conquering Mexico City, someone in our government had the good sense to give it back.
The irony is that Quebecois is not really french, even the real French from France giggle when they hear the term “French” associated with the term “Quebecois”. France friends have told me that Quebecois is an old dialect that has never progressed, find it gutteral and is hard to understand, they don’t consider it “French”.
Quebecois hear Parisian French and consider it effeminate. Myself I find it much more understandable then Quebecois.
A funny note, a Quebecois friend liked the Dukes of Hazzard TV show, but he called it the “Ducks of Haz ard” He was embarrassed when I laughed my ass off because he thought his English was so good. Ended up being a good laugh all round.
They are mostly good people, it’s just the incompetents running the place.
Is there a petition somewhere for the rest of Canada to demand a referendum?
Should Canada punt Quebec from Confederation?
YES
NO
Iggy is flogging a dead horse.
Most folks yell a lot when they get “press 1 for english” and then think they pushed 2 or whatever.
This a constant irritant that just keeps on giving.
I recall being present when one of our local “fence-post LIBERALs” ran a-foul this. I took over the phone and sorted things out in french (actually more Provenciale). That done I told him he could thank Truedough for that—-he gave me a beer…..and we discussed making a pilgrimage to PET grave to drain our bladders…..a meeting of the minds.
Sooner or later the West is just going to have to Shut off their oil and transfer payments.
