That song reminds me of a navy port visit to Bermuda back in the 80’s. A couple of buddies and I walked into a pub in which dozens of kippers (Brit sailors) were raising the roof in song as only the kippers can do. When we walked in, they literally stopped and looked at us. It was just like in an old western. One of them said, before returning to singing, that if we wanted to stay we’d have to sing a song. Not well versed in many songs, we quickly started into a few frightened verses of North Atlantic Squadron. They all stopped to listen and when we were done, gave us a hearty applause and welcomed us into their mix. Interestingly, one kipper came up to us and said that had we been Yanks instead of colonials, it wouldn’t have been pretty.
