Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite
Radio. Tonight, for your delectation & courtesy of LNR listener
Exetaz’s mail, here are Harry James and his Orchestra performing
A Taste of Honey ¤ on the Ed Sullivan Show, in 1966 (2:46).
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Thanks, Vitruvius.
Thanks Vitruvius. I have both the Harry James and the Herb Alpert versions on LP and am in the process of converting the LPs to cd. Great music.
Youtube video of Jennifer Lynch appearing before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights in Ottawa.
Youtube video of Richard Moon and the Canadian Jewish Congress in front of the same committee.
Great stuff Vitruvius. Thinking of Ed Sullivan makes me think of Pearly Mae taking her shoes off, and that little bundle of energy; Anna Maria Alberghetti (not to mention Edie Gorme, etc.)
Credit to Exetaz, gentlemen, she suggested it.
Thanks, Exetaz and Vit.
First time I’ve seen a big band stage version, other than when we’ve played it. The full instrumentation is nice, although I think Harry James runs it a bit too fast…
Great stuff.
A story out of Florida, where Juanita Castro has lived since 1964, she broke with the brothers over their revolution a couple of years before exiting to Florida, it seems the Brasilian Ambassador had recruited Juanita for the CIA, and she was passing information to the JFK administration and their deaf ears… 48 hours later, the U2 spy photos were on JFK’s desk.

Sooooo, in order to cut costs in the “downturn”, the Winnipeg Free Press will be going Tabloid on Sundays. (I thought every day was Tabloid day there !)
I can imagine FP customers hitting sites like sda and Drudge for their Sunday information fix. And once they see a ‘click-away’ comparison between Kate and Matt and … phittt, Gordon Sinclair, it will then become Monday also. And Tues ….
Sorry, FP staff, but it did not have to be this way. Should have canned Frances Russel and gang a couple of decades ago.
(Read the FP’s own commenters. Very telling.

you know it wouldnt be alf as funny if wernt it for the place just sout and west of ere.

From Richard Russell’s site:
A few paragraphs from a recent Paul Craig Roberts article. Roberts was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Reagan.
Costs are out of control, and priorities are skewed in the interests of rich organized interest groups at the expense of the vast majority of citizens. For example, war at all cost, which enriches the armaments industry, the officer corps and the financial firms that handle the war’s financing, takes precedence over the needs of American citizens. There is no money to provide the uninsured with health care, but Pentagon officials have told the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee in the House that every gallon of gasoline delivered to US troops in Afghanistan costs American taxpayers $400.
“It is a number that we were not aware of and it is worrisome,” said Rep. John Murtha, chairman of the subcommittee.
According to reports, the US Marines in Afghanistan use 800,000 gallons of gasoline per day. At $400 per gallon, that comes to a $320,000,000 daily fuel bill for the Marines alone. Only a country totally out of control would squander resources in this way.

Cal 2 – I once lived in Pierre Burton’s house, before it was renovated by Pierre and Parks Canada. Pierre came to visit once and they did an interview in his old home.
When I lived in that house it was heated by a barrel stove in the cellar – I removed the piles of newspaper sitting near the stove because I had visions of it going up in smoke when it was 60 below and the stove was red hot. The place was well insulated though, I must admit; it never got below 40F in the kitchen. I could not see out of the iced up windows for 3 or 4 months – the ice was about an inch thick.
That was all back in the glory days in 1979-1980 before Dawson became a ‘toy town’. Dawson was a ghost town sprung to life by the price of gold. It was a wonderful time to live in such a place, I always felt I had one foot in the 1980’s and one foot in the 1898-1902 days. Amazing things happened every day. It was an adventure to wake up because you never knew what might happen. In the Casino, Diamond Tooth Gerties, the floor was frost heaved and had holes worn through the boards but miners threw gold nuggets at the can-can girls and women wore thousands of $$ of gold dangling from necks, ears and wrists. Miners often left gold nuggets for a tip in the Dinning room where I worked and the Bank of Commerce, the same one Robert Service worked in, had a gold scale in there to transfer gold to $$. Casino chips were legal tender all over town – so was gold.
It was a window in time, it only lasted four years but I will be forever glad that I was there – then.
A Tribute to Ernest Shackleton.

“Whisky on (Antarctic) ice: Ernest Shackleton…left a stash at the bottom of the world.
CAPE ROYDS, Antarctica — This spit of black volcanic rock that juts out along the coast of Antarctica is an inhospitable place. Temperatures drop below –50 Fahrenheit and high winds cause blinding snowstorms…
But if you happen upon the small wooden hut that sits at Cape Royds and wriggled yourself underneath, you’d find a surprise stashed in the foot and a half of space beneath the floorboards. Tucked in the shadows and frozen to the ground are two cases of Scotch whisky left behind 100 years ago by Sir Ernest Shackleton after a failed attempt at the South Pole.
Conservators discovered the wooden cases in January 2006. They were unable to dislodge the crates, but are going in with special tools in January during the Antarctic summer to try to retrieve them. An international treaty dictates that the crates, and any intact bottles that are inside, remain in Antarctica unless they need to be taken off the continent for conservation reasons. The whisky’s condition after a century of freezing and thawing is unknown…
Shackleton turned around 97 miles short of his destination, telling his wife, “I thought you’d rather have a live donkey than a dead lion.” When the ship arrived in 1909 to pick the men up, they left their supplies behind in their hut, including reindeer sleeping bags, tins of boiled mutton and bottled gooseberries. And, as we now know, they also abandoned two cases of Charles Mackinlay & Co. whisky.”

Red-faced United Nations officials Monday admitted to a major security lapse after a UN guard helped Kentucky Fried Chicken’s “Colonel Sanders” gain access to restricted areas.
The guard escorted the white-suited intruder past security barriers, where he got a handshake from the UN General Assembly president, Dr. Ali A. Treki of Libya. The faux fast food chain founder also posed for a picture beneath the assembly’s giant UN logo.
“It should not have happened– that I will stress, and very strongly,” said Michele Montas, spokeswoman for UN secretary general Ban Kimoon.”

Just cruised over to the CBC news website (don’t ask). They are reporting on the terrorist suicide bombings that claimed 155 live and who knows how many injuries.
True to their mantra they only refer to the terrorists as “insurgents”. I guess one man’ terrorist is another man’s insurgent.

“‘Flash mobster’ exposed”
“3. Protester unplugged. After the drama had subsided on Parliament Hill yesterday, there were some questions to be answered. Who exactly were the young protesters disrupting Question Period with shouted demands of action on climate change? Thanks to the magic of YouTube there are some answers. One of the protesters, who appeared to be an organizer, looks exactly like one of the delegates to the NDP convention in Halifax last August. In the video, the protester is talking outside of Centre Block, explaining the purpose of the “flash mob” was to show support for a clean energy future. And then there is a clip of a young man, who looks much the same, at the microphone at the NDP convention asking a question about the tar sands. He also looks a lot like the protester, Joe Cressy, who was interviewed on CBC Newsworld five years ago and was one of the student spokespersons for the anti-George W. Bush protests that took place when the former U.S. president came to Ottawa.
Yesterday afternoon, CTV News Channel’s Power Play host Tom Clark asked NDP leader Jack Layton if he knew anything about the protest. He did not. Meanwhile, the organizers behind the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition – the group that had been in Ottawa for four days to push MPs on the subject – denied any involvement in the protest. “We regret that for many youth who attended Question Period, which was intended to be an educational experience, left feeling hurt and unsatisfied,” said Amber Church, the National Director of the coalition.”

To further the advance of their ‘quiet’ cultural revolution – but giving us no ideas about their plans for the future – the School recommended (among other things):
1. The creation of racism offences.
2. Continual change to create confusion
3. The teaching of sex and homosexuality to children
4. The undermining of schools’ and teachers’ authority
5. Huge immigration to destroy identity.
6. The promotion of excessive drinking
7. Emptying of churches
8. An unreliable legal system with bias against victims of crime
9. Dependency on the state or state benefits
10. Control and dumbing down of media
11. Encouraging the breakdown of the family

This sounds like the standard Marxist-leftist agenda for the past century or so; I doubt it was conjured up for the Blair government. I’ll bet it ties in with the video on “political correctness” that was linked in one of these Reader Tips threads, from the Transylvania Phoenix blog on Oct. 14. I haven’t read the comments to the Melanie Phillips article but I presume the “School” is the Frankfurt School (of Marxism)?
