At the core of progressivism is the hubris that if we could only take all of our brilliant scientific analysis and apply it to society, we could create utopia, or at least a rough approximation thereof. Didn’t really work out that way in the twentieth century, now did it?
    Politics is about what the government ought to do, as much as it’s about how the government should go about achieving it. Some ‘political science’ might demonstrate that the most effective way to achieve a goal would be to eliminate a big chunk of the population, the physical sciences might provide a convenient or effective way of doing so, but science overall would be completely silent as to whether such a project ought to be undertaken in the first place.
    Certainly there are some with a background in the physical sciences who would make great political leaders (Thatcher, anyone?) but don’t kid yourself that scientists as a class are possessed of some unique moral virtue that makes them qualified to govern. I’m a physicist and I have tons of colleagues, the majority even, whom I would rather see stay in the lab and out of politics.
