   Wish I’d read all the comments before posting mine. Suspect we’re actually all at least looking at the same prayer book but from different angles. As the American west expanded, it was the Anglo establishments that most served to “open it up” if you will. At the same time, Catholic priests were very energetic in serving incredibly wide-spread communities. They raised funds for civic buildings, churches of course, helped coop and structure small local business. Really incredible individuals. Surprisingly, many Protestant missions were there before them with large schools and churches already in place. The priests, however, seemed more willing to head out into the bush with a Native American or two as guides. I have to look into the Scots angle of northeast settlement. As a proud American of Scots-Irish decent, it’s clear this group is responsible for most of the good we see now in the U. S. but didn’t realize they left so much behind them in the 16th and 17th centuries.
   Also, in my prior post the 18th & 19th century mention should obviously be 17th & 18th.

2. Ignatieff has revealed he does NOT represent Canadian values, nor is he worthy to be Canada’s prime minister. After his 34 year odyssey away from Canada, he was enticed to return to inherit the Liberal leadership post-Martin and then cruise to PM of Canada. If Liberal backroom operatives had not made him that offer, he would have stayed away from Canada..and of that there can be no doubt.
   It’s also becoming apparent that Ignatieff is only a front for hidden Liberal interests, because he has no Canadian political credentials, nor does he really care about Canada … except for personal gain.
   Ignatieff as a ‘we Americans’ Bush supporter, advocated in obvious context, in the 2004 NY Times: torture, assassination, denial of rights, preemptive war, and later in a public lecture, even the starvation of N Koreans.
   This is all in the public domain, yet the Canadian media conveniently ignores Ignatieff’s sordid political past, and refuse to make an issue of his unCanadian values.
   Perhaps all of his sins have been washed away once he assumed the mantle of Liberal leadership. Ignatieff is “”scary””, but we know Canadians are easily scammed given the collusion of the media.
