Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here is Mr. Stan Getz, with Albert Dailey, George Mraz, et al, performing Antonio Carlos Jobim‘s famous bossa nova, Wave ¤, in Copenhagen, ca. thirty years ago (4:29). Tonight’s SDA LNR cheese selection is Ticklemore, a lovely young spring version of which I acquired earlier today. Thanks, Debbie & Mark, this really is a delightful cheese! Give your goats a pat on the head for me, won’t you?

  1. I was in Santa Monica tonight and there was a street protest against Obama(maybe 30 people) with posters and pamphlets depicting Obama with a Hitler mustache. Pretty funny stuff.
    The gist of the protest: They seemed to have issues with his healthcare proposals.
    Santa Monica is pretty left-wing, so maybe the wheel is starting to turn.

    Speaking of Nazi, watched the film Defiance with Daniel Craig tonight. Very well done, and apparently the book is even better.
    Amazing people these survivors. Can’t imagine what it must be like living in the woods in the middle of the winter without much food and in fear of your life all the time.

This idea that the recently elected or immediate past president may be exhibiting “Hitler like” behavior, because folks disagree with certain aspects of foreign or domestic policy, with a noted absence of millions of dead people… it’s difficult to take these types seriously, at the same time as seriously cheapening the memory that these murdered millions impart. It is a glaring admission, that these types of protesters haven’t a clue of what true evil was about. and using that image on the 6º June further highlights their lack of historical insight.
    Stalin = Hitler? sure, no problem…

To Nicola – chill baby – not everyone has a “francais/englais” computer capable of doing both of our official languages.(I’m sure you can see that neither do I as I was not able to include the “c cedille” in my “francais”. We don’t want to appear to be snobish now, do we.

The May 19 ruling was met with the cheers of millions in this populous Arab country.
    Arab Journos Boycott Obama Roundtable; Won’t Sit With Jew
    After Obama’s speech in Cairo yesterday, he arranged a roundtable with eight journalists. Yedioth Ahronoth, an Israeli paper, was invited to send a correspondent as were several Arab papers. Nahum Barnea reports (translation):
    After Obama’s speech yesterday at Cairo University, we gathered, six senior journalists from all over the Muslim world and I, the reporter for Yedioth Ahronoth, around a circular table in a side room. The president wanted to give us an interview.
    The original group had eight. The Syrian did not show after hearing that a reporter from Israel had been invited. The Lebanese, Naoum Sarkis, had been sitting with us all at the front of the hall but when he realized where I was from and whom I was representing, he passed on the opportunity and fled.

    I’m surprised that nothing’s been made of the fact that Jasmine MacDonnell is the daughter of Ralston MacDonnell of Halifax, President of MacDonnell Group Consulting Ltd., a group of engineering and management consulting companies — and also a fundraiser for Michael Ignatieff.
    It could very well be that Jasmine MadDonnell is a consummate professional, though it is difficult to imagine a consummate professional leaving confidential, highly sensitive material behind in the CTV Green Room and not being able to locate it for a whole week. You’d think that if your father is a fundraiser for Michael Ignatieff, the CPC’s chief rival, you might be MORE careful in the carrying out of your duties as communications secretary for a CPC MP — or would you?

  29. Continuing with Maz2’s weather theme, I stumbled upon this little chart last night.

    It shows the decline in global temperatures plotted against the increase in atmospheric CO2.
    I found it on the CTV Calgary website in the weather section. If you’re interested, they have another chart showing global daily ice area and one showing reduced hurricane activity. Of course, they also tell you where the data came from.

    Concerning Lisa Raitt and the way she stood and answered all questions in the ‘HOC’. She stood with absolute respect, answered the questions with calmness and authority. Damn good to see.

  38. I was pleasntly surprised today to hear an ad from the local easy rock station encoraging ‘buy local’ and it has 2 audio quotes of from one of PMSH’s speeches encouraging Canadians that Canada will do well thru the ecomomic slowdown.
    It was sponsored by the station itself. Good for them!

    Go to CBC.CA and read the story! Not a word about “The Liberal Government of Ontario.” They (CBC) simply refer to them as “The Government of Ontario.”
    That is amusing, because whenever the CBC and/or Radio Canada talk about the federal government, especially of the headline is negative, they always refer to the feds as “The Conservative Government,” or (French): Le Gouvernement Conservateur.
    Nawwww–the CBC can’t be bias now can they?

    Canadian Sentinel commented about the election: So much for the Obama effect, eh?
    Perhaps we can thank Obama for an unintended wake-up call to the “severely normal” Europeans. Perhaps they’re thinking to themselves “holy sht, America’s finished, we can’t depend on America anymore so it’s up to us”
    Perhaps Mark Steyn will have to do a sequel book – “Without America”.

The historic year 1989 will be commemorated in all the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, but at different moments. In my country in November.
    I remember I was here also 10 years ago at a similar conference organized on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.[1] It is good and reassuring to find out that some of today’s participants were here 10 years ago as well. It means that we – who remember – are still alive.
    Many interesting and thought-provoking ideas, partly reflecting the implicit competition among the well-known reformers, were expressed here then but I will never forget one of them, made by our friend, former Prime Minister of Russia, Yegor Gaidar. When being attacked – in a rather unfriendly manner by one very self-assured, but the post-communist transformation only from a distance observing expert – for not succeeding – in Russia – to arrange a rapid institution building and an almost immediate formation of perfect rules and legislation, he came up with a brilliant answer: “I was only the prime minister of Russia, not the Czar of Russia.” I have been quoting it repeatedly ever since.
    His remark fully coincides with my deep conviction – both then and now – that the whole transformation process from communism to a free society was a very fragile mixture (or melange) of an inevitably imperfect and fragmentary constructivism of rules and institutions by the politicians and of a spontaneous emergence of markets which was – luckily – an unorganized, unplanned, uncoordinated outcome of activities of millions of finally free people in our countries. This is something we have to insist on and only on this basis this whole process and the role of politicians in it can be rationally evaluated.
    Some of us knew that it would have been a tragic mistake and a complete misunderstanding of the meaning and nature of the market economy to aim at constructing markets as many of our “contemporaries” – both friends and adversaries – wanted. The markets can’t be constructed, they must evolve.”

    Vaclav Klaus knows history is not socialist. As Klaus said of free markets: “The markets can’t be constructed, they must evolve.”
    Thus, history will evolve. Klaus’ life is the template for the future.
    The socialism in Europe was advanced by rootless cosmopolitans* such as the Red Count Harry Kessler.
    Kessler was active from the “1890s to the 1930s”.
