A reader writes;

[This] is a scanned copy of a brochure used in one of the Ontario schools to teach ‘Social responsibility’.
It is astonishing how much this resembles indoctrination a subject of which I used to be in the USSR. This brochure bears a sticker with a student’s name and they are told not to take it home.
One of the most horrible chapters is on page 20 – Oswald’s reeducation session. Can we afford to remain silent and do nothing about this? But I don’t know what to do and where to go.

  6. Adjusting to socialism requires some effort afterall, not as much as capitalism but it’s not all free handouts like the Right wingers would like you to believe. You must work hard on shedding your freedoms like choices, speech and even thinking.
    That kid needs a good punishment for even questioning the authority and by reprimand I don’t necessarely mean from his parents. Adjusting to socialism also means you loose your parenthood/childhood to the State too.
    State run childcare anyone? Obama and here at home, Dion’s Liberals talk about it, afterall.

  8. How odd? I was just starting to write up my education plan to start homeschooling in the next school year. My main reasons are due to the awful reading, math and science curriculum but the subtle and not-so-subtle social engineering is another factor. The teachers are nice people but the education agenda is terrible. I hear the argument that our education programs are “cutting edge” but it seems more like the kids are being used as geunie pigs in this educational experiment.
    My kids will never get a well-paying job and leave home if I leave their education up to the public school system. They would probably be redistributing our wealth to themselves well into their thirties.

I seem to remember they tried a proto-version of this sort of crap on me when I was in high school, but my will was even at that age a lot stronger than theirs, and by the time they got around to me I was already so disgusted and disillusioned with the whole public school experience that their efforts fell flat.

  12. All of y’all who have school kids should counsel them thusly: When people in school try to “adjust” you, the proper response is howl “BITE ME!!!” and deliver the biggest head-but you can muster. Peaceful resistance will only get you so far.
    After all, it isn’t like the apparatchiks can hit the kid back, right? PC rules have their uses.

  13. I love the way the kid’s name is Oswald. Of all the names they could pick, they chose the one that makes any sentient being over 20 think of a communist ex-Marine who blew the president’s head off.

  14. PS: if you can’t homeschool your kids, at least train them to stay stuff like:
    “If you’re so smart, how come you’re just a guidance counsellor…?”
    Worked wonders for me.

  16. That is beyond sick, but the sad truth of it is that it has been happening for years. I found the best way to combat such stupidity was to do things such as taking the flowery language literally. “Dont you want to (insert mundane activity here) so you can help people/learn (insert completely useless skill here)?” my answer was usually no (charity begins at home, and I dont need to know how to make an ashtray, sing in french or do long division when I’m a millionaire).
    My folks got a lot of phone calls about my free-thinking ways, they always just told the councillor to deal with it.
    Private school or homeschool seems to be the way to do things now, at least then you’re better able to monitor what your kids are learning.

  25. When my kids were in school the police came around showing the class what pot plants looked like. Told them if they saw any on the way home or in and around the old homestead they should let them know. Fortunately my kids already knew how I felt about stool pidgeons and they felt the same way. We still mention it the odd time when we’re sharing a gagger. We laugh and laugh and….I’m hungry.

  26. I’d like to get some further information on this document. What is “CASA”? Has the document been mandated by the Ministry of Education in Ontario or is it an initiative by a school board or a particular school? This is the sort of thing I try to teach about in some of my courses, and this document seems ripe for analysis.
    Every year we see more schools conducting surveys or teaching lessons that they tell the students not to talk about at home, and they take a very hostile stance to parents (or school board members)who want to know what’s going on.

  32. Good catch Erik, but you don’t really believe that the committee that wrote that travesty actually had anyone on it that has read Shakespeare do you?
    I mean, after all, his writing is full of more non-PC tracts than you can shake a stick at. The work in question has swearing AND competition all in one line.

  42. I would highly recommend the home schooling option.
    We’ve had it in Alberta for years.
    My son was homeschooled in junior high and is now a better-adjusted 18-year-old adult, even complaining about the taxes that are being deducted off his paycheque.
    Homeschooled kids will be the leaders of the free people in the future.
    It takes a bit of sacrifice from the parents, since one of them must be at home, but trust me, it’s well worth the sacrifice.

  43. Jeez, I had similar re-education sessions at work!
    They told me that my work was fine, they just could not tolerate that I was not contributing enough to a number of new initiatives.
    The same verbiage was used, just on a different level.
    This sh1t is penetrating deeper and deeper in Canadian society.

    Having looked at it, I don’t know exactly what to think really.
    I’m torn, because since many parents have outsourced child-raising to the schools, efforts to promote civil behaviour are not necessarily harmful.
    On the other hand, the “Lathe of Heaven” inspired grey people riff kind of freaks me out a bit.

  48. Richard Evans, thanks for hosting that. It seems pretty standard collectivist boiler plate. “Act Prosocial”, “different communities to which you belong…” kind of laid my ears back a bit.
    The standout is the “Make Positive Contributions” section. Not participating in the organized activities is verboten, it seems.
    Its all looks very Japanese corporate, to tell you the truth. The nail which sticks up will be hammered down, sing the company song and all that great stuff.
    Not something I’m prepared to put up with in a Canadian school.

  49. After reading the whole thing I’ve got to agree with Erik Larsen, teaching civil behaviour is not necessarily harmful and I’m a little torn. But this thing is pretty creepy in an Orwellian kind of way. Gives the libertarian in me cold shivers. :O
    Dialogue coaches? pro-social? proactive? and how many times did they flash “tolerance” in large bold letters?
    I also have to question why they are told not to take it home.
