“Afghanistan is part of a huge area consisting of many languages, customs and ethnic tribes, most of whom have been at odds with one another for a thousand years or more.”
Probably true. So shouldn’t they be ready for some tolerant multiculturalism then?
“We are wasting our time, resources and precious young people by trying to impose our Western ideals of democracy on that region of the world. It is a recipe for failure.”
What about if western democracy is more just than the barbaric society in Afghanistan? Don’t we have the right to tell them to stop subjugating women, stoning homosexuals, and generally acting brutally toward one another? In other words, to respect human rights?
Note the double standard: in western societies, people who oppose “politically correct” notions are castigated and vilified. But not in societies with REAL human rights violations where the inhabitants have “been at odds with one another for a thousand years”. They can just go on their merry way, killing and torturing each other. Call it the Jack Layton view of the world.
After World War 2, the push for democracy was at the top of the international agenda. But the extreme left didn’t like that, because it might threaten their plans. So they managed to make a lot of people buy in to the notion that democracy and individual rights “can’t be imposed” in certain places.
And of course, one major tool the extreme left uses is to sow guilt in its enemies — whether for advocating democracy consistently, or for making allegedly “racist” comments, etc., etc. Meanwhile the left admits no guilt over the tens of millions of people murdered on its own account, and its intention of continuing in that vein by refusing to help bring democracy to places like Afghanistan.
Vitruvius; not my favorite music; no discernible rhythm, no melody, just instrumentalists practicing their scales or something. How about this Canadian couple? Black and Ward, On The Road To LA
The Audacity of Hype
Gunney99: I don’t think I’ve heard that Black and Ward song since it came out! It’s better than I remember it. The oldies stations do play “Unless You Care” by Terry Black quite a bit. Anyone who likes the Beatles and ’60s pop generally will enjoy that one; I certainly do.
nv53; if you liked that one, how about Me and Bobby Mcgee by Gordon Lightfoot. Although almost all the Western and Pop singers of the time sang this one I don’t think anyone could top GL.
My humblest apologies, Gunney99. Perhaps if you could include an email address in your comments I could forward all future shows to you for your approval. After all, if you don’t want to hear Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Arnie Lawrence, John Lewis, George Duvivier, and Shelly Manne “practicing their scales”, then why should anyone else?
Or perhaps not. After all, it could just be that you are a naturally negative person who welcomes the opportunity to endlessly complain about everything you don’t personally like, in which case having you vet my selections would ruin your fun, in which case do carry on, free speech and all that, eh what, pip, pip.
What can I say? Just wait ’till Wednesday’s show? I just did. And so, as the sun slowly sets on the international date line, I bid y’all best wishes; as always thanks to our gracious hostess Kate, and please don’t forget to tip your waitress and the doorman as you depart for another night from le Club chez SDA Late Nite Radio.

Michelle Obama or an incredible Stepford simulation?
Spengler, The lady doth protest too little
Michelle Obama’s negatives in opinion polls are the worst ever registered for a candidate’s wife, deep enough, perhaps, to turn the election against Barack. Presumably that is why the Democratic Party wheeled out a chipper, perky, sunny and smiling African-American female who claimed to be Michelle Obama in the keynote slot of its national convention Monday night. This alleged Michelle Obama bore a striking physical resemblance to the candidate’s wife observed during the campaign, but the differences in attitude and rhetoric were extreme enough to warrant verification…
Wahhabism is a reform movement “analogous to the European protestant reformation”? Don’t miss Mattson’s utterances following the Gaffney article.
Frank J. Gaffney, Jr., The Democrats’ ‘Soft’ Jihadist
On Sunday, Democratic delegates convening in Denver were prayed over by representatives of various faiths. One stood out: Ingrid Mattson, president of the Islamic Society of North America. With this choice, Barak Obama’s campaign has committed a strategic error of the first order.
After all, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) has been identified by the Department of Justice not only as a front for the Muslim Brotherhood – a global Islamist movement with the stated mission in America of “destroying Western civilization from within.” Worse yet, it has also been named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the United States’ largest alleged terrorism financing conspiracy…

“Chinese bishop arrested as Olympics close
Beijing, Aug. 25, 2008 (CWNews.com) – China’s most prominent “underground” Catholic bishop was arrested on Sunday, August 24: the day that also saw the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Bishop Julius Jia Zhiguo of Zhengding was taken into custody by several police officers at Wuqiu cathedral. No immediate reason was given for his arrest, and authorities have not disclosed where the aging bishop is being held.
The 73-year-old Bishop Jia, who heads an active diocese of over 100,000 Catholics in the Hebei diocese, spent 15 years in prison, from 1963 to 1978. Since his release he has been re-arrested at least 12 times; ordinarily he has been detained for a few days of interrogation each time. He has been living under house arrest since 1989.”

Ian Drury, Labour has created a ‘timebomb generation’ of teenagers hooked on casual sex, drugs and binge-drinking, claim Tories
A generation of teenagers have become ‘health timebombs’ because of their binge-drinking, smoking, drug use and underage sex, the Conservatives warned yesterday.
The scale of the health problems facing those aged 11 to 19 was laid bare for the first time by official figures.
They show the number of young people admitted to hospital for treatment because they have abused alcohol, cigarettes and drugs has soared.
Cases of sexually-transmitted diseases and abortions among schoolgirls have also rocketed under Labour…
(Via Israpundit) Andrew L. Jaffee, The American-Indians: We understand terrorism [Image Gallery]
At a run-up event to the main GON [Gathering of Nations] spectacle, a Navajo cantor told the audience, “We understand terrorism,” referring to the crimes committed against American Indians in the past, but he emphasized that his people have been in the forefront of protecting the U.S. through voluntary military service. He also alluded to Navajo societal problems, underscoring that preserving cultural traditions is one of the most positive outlets for tribal young people: “I tell kids, ‘you should be an asset, not a burden to your community.’”
During GON’s grand entrance of the 19 New Mexican Indian Pueblos (accompanied by Arizona’s Hopi), the MC stressed that American Indians have peaceably preserved their culture. I would add that they haven’t taught their children to become homicide bombers, nor have they indoctrinated their children with hatred, nor have their spiritual leaders incited violence. American Indians have tenaciously clung to their traditions while seeking legal and peaceable remedies to their plight…
Dion must be awfully busy with configuring his green shaft tax grab. He hasn’t got time to even meet with Harper for a chat about the Fall session of Parliament.
Perhaps he should have a chat with the “green” party of Ireland, they’ve decided not to go with a caron tax, it would hurt too many people.
That wouldn’t be a consideration for a Liberal. It’s all about collecting tax money to fund pet Liberal interests and social engineering projects, like who should raise our children.
[The American Political Science Association meets this week in Boston, and one of the questions they will consider will be whether they should meet as planned next year in Toronto. After the prosecution of Mark Steyn before a provincial Human Rights Commission this year and the demand of another commission to a Christian publication to cease criticism of gays and lesbians, APSA wonders whether debate on Islam, homosexuality, or other topics could result in prosecution. A nascent boycott movement has sprung into existence, and APSA leadership has decided to consult legal experts on potential liability.]

Ron – good points. And we should also include the fact that our HRC ‘court’ system has removed the freedom of speech – supposedly a fundamental right in Canada which means it can’t be removed – from a Christian minister, the Rev. Stephen Boissoin. He is forbidden to ever speak against homosexuality – despite its reference in the bible – even in private.
This isn’t happening in China; we can smugly post references to arrests of Christian bishop’s in China, and yet ignore that this same judiciary harassment is happening in Canada.

“A Look Back at Beijing 2008
By Ullrich Fichtner, Maik Grossekathöfer and Detlef Hacke
The organizers of this year’s Olympic Games in Beijing wanted us to believe that the event was purely about sports. Instead, the pundits were right. It was about politics, money and fraud.
Looking at the Olympic flame late last week, its reflection flickering in large puddles left by a heavy downpour, it was difficult to tell that the two-week sporting extravaganza was coming to an end. The day-to-day of the games still reigned: IOC President Jacques Rogge chided Jamaican sprinter and gold medalist Usain Bolt for his unsportsmanlike behavior; a Ukrainian athlete was asked to provide a urine sample after winning silver in the heptathlon; and the 110-meter hurdles took place in the evening without Chinese track star Liu Xiang, who was injured. Away from the competition, American protesters had been arrested and Chinese newspapers were reporting the death of party patriarch Hua Guofeng.”

Crunch the numbers being thrown around. With $1.1 million people directly or indirectly involved in the arts generating 84 billion in economic activity, that works out to about 76 thousand per person, about twice the per capita GDP of an average Canadian.

bc: ‘Hard to accept those figures, for sure.
And, even if the Arts “community” brought in as much revenue as they say, why should they be “rewarded” with travel grants? If they’ve generated all that revenue, surely their bank accounts are bulging.
Maybe stay-at-home moms, whose families live– often sacrificially–on one income, should have their travel expenses paid for by the Canadian taxpayer, and the holiday they often never get? I mean, they contribute a great deal to society: Their kids don’t tend to get into the kind of trouble kids do when no one’s home and they do most of the volunteer work in their kids’ schools.
Why does the Arts community think it’s so special? I’m glad the CPC cut off the travel grants; Canadian tax dollars can be far better spent elsewhere.
Why does National Newswatch have a picture of Harper, in front of a podium with the words:
A Strong Un Canada
What’s National Newswatch’s agenda?
Imf, the people of Ontario love McGuinty, they gave him two Majorities. They apparently love lying Liberals.
McGuinty broke most of his promises to get his first majority and they elected him to another round with a majority. They had no concern about anything except not funding faith based schools, which Conservative Tory mused about. Even Tory backtracked when he found the people were against it but the brain free voters chose the proven liar Dalty. Liberals and lying, a successful combination in Ontario.
McGuintys could run their cat in Ottawa as long as it’s labeled “McGuinty’s Liberal Cat” and get elected.
And the Obama-ization of Dion by CBC has begun in earnest! At Dion’s press conf. today,Lib toady Boag asks Dion:” will your wife play a role in this campaign, like Michelle Obama????? Honest to God,I fell off the couch!
Nice comment by Dion on the Arctic, and PMSH announcement: ‘The Arctic will become a jungle..heh heh..but a jungle without trees’
This is gonna be fun.
I see that the National Newswatch picture of Harper, with a Sign in front of him saying
‘A Strong Un Canada’
has gone. I still wonder – who put that Sign up? And why? Who is running National Newswatch?
Our MSM, who are predominantly Liberal, are falling all over themselves to prevent an election. Here we have that same MSM for the last two years, endlessly, endlessly, day after day on Duffy, on Newman, in the press, asking WHEN’s the election.
Now that Harper is confronting them with ‘OK, Let’s call an election’…they are all falling apart and screaming – BUT you promised we wouldn’t have one until 2009! You promised!
Well, if that’s what they believe, then why were these same people, both MSM and politicians, screeching about WHEN’s the election for the last two years? Why weren’t they busying themselves with making parliament work?
Why were they instead obstructing parliament, refusing to show up for votes, not carrying out their duty of critiquing the govt, setting up endless witchhunts against Harper. Why?
And by the way, a critique does not mean a mindless rejection. Any idiot can simply say the opposite of what is being proposed. A genuine critique, which the Liberals as Opposition are supposed to provide, is based on critical analysis – and might strongly approve of the govt proposal. Why weren’t the Liberals doing this?
But now, instead – Dion and the MSM are scared stiff that, instead of getting away with name-calling and bullying and other school-yard tactics, they are being told to PUT UP and WORK, or Go into an Election.
They don’t like that.
“BREAKING: 44 Iranian Scientists and Engineers were on board Kyrgyz 737 …
By: Bulov on: 26.08.2008
MOSCOW, August 25 – Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday sent a message of condolences to Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev in connection with the crash of a Boeing-737 plane at Bishkek’s international airport Manas, the Kremlin press service reported.
The Boeing, belonging to Kyrgyz Itek Air carrier, was on a fight from Bishkek to Tehran. It took off from Manas at 18:30, Moscow time, on Sunday and several minutes later requested an emergency landing. However, it failed to reach the airport and went down five kilometres away from the landing strip, near the settlement of Dzhany-Dzher.
According to official reports, there were 90 passengers and crew on board the plane. Sixty-five bodies have been found at the site of the crash. The Kyrgyz government has set up a commission to look into the plane crash.
The jet was on its way to Tehran, the Iranian capital. Among those on board were 44 Iranian Scientists and Engineers.
Do you have a URL, Bulov?”

ET, agreed, Dion wouldn’t shut up about “Canadians (Liberals that is) wanting an election,” and “putting this government out of its misery.”
Then they cry when Harper calls their bluff. I suspect they know he is going to cream them, so they are trying to turn the tables, calling Harper desperate when that label clearly belongs to them.
Harper has them on the run, again, and it’s driving them nuts. Dion will have to cave in, again, and meet with Harper prior to 5 Sep.
If not then it’s election time. Dion will have a lot of trouble campaigning from a bus, or a camper, because Grits have used much of their money to partly pay off Dion’s leadership campaign debt.
Another hook among many – Dion can’t pay off his debts but wants us to trust him with the taxpayers money – indeed he wants more of it.
No wonder Harper is keeping his foot on Dion’s throat (metaphorically that is).
Oh, and another thing. Where in Dion’s fantasy world does he think he can sell the idea that Harper is “breaking” the fixed election date legislation, but, by defeating the government, he wouldn’t?
At the very least, he would be going against the spirit of the legislation. It goes both ways, buddy. Liberals, with the advent of the blogs, and the disastrous Martin administration, can’t have it both ways anymore.
Mr Dion – tell the PM you are going to let the Commons decide issues, rather than the Senate or committees, with no election before Oct 09.
No, then too bad so sad Dionsky!
The bent horn was Dizzy Gillespie’s trademark. There are various stories about how he came to it. The truth of the matter is not certain, but whatever the case, he liked the distinctive sound, and the singular look. And hey, what’s not to like.
Liberals are on the run, running scared at that. Some signs of it are coming from their pals in the media. Some, like Don Martin are writing about abortion, the last refuge of a desperate politician.
The media would like to get something going on that front because there isn’t anything else they can come up with. Dion’s carbon tax on everything is CRAZY and just won’t fly, so it’s on to the last refuge.
The Conservatives can bring up true scandals with the Liberal stamp on them. We need to talk about the depth of Liberal scandals, another installment of “Sidewinder” would be an interesting counter to anything the Liberals wish to bring up.
The media leads with “Harper is threatening to call an election….”. Well, hello, who the hell has been threatening to bring down the government at every vote in the HOC only to disappear behind the curtains for the vote?
Dion nothing but a pussy who can’t even purr with clarity.
We can all remember his non-answers in the House to questions about when he would unveil his plan on the environment, for nine years he didn’t have one, the entire time he was Environment Minister under Golf Ball Jean.
Sad and pathetic lot.
