“There is a great deal of goodwill, love, brotherhood in the air. Hooray for Jamaica. Jamaicans were riveted to their television sets and I am hoping from my vantage point here in Barbados that this would have made a difference to the astronomical crime rate in Jamaica.
Now that the Olympic games are over I suspect that Jamaicans will have a lot of free time on their hands. And the old saying is “The Devil finds work for idle hands”. I suspect that Jamaicans will return to their national pastime with relish. That is, murdering each other in large numbers.“

I can recall a curious inconsistency in the conduct of certain peoples. It would require some plain politically incorrect research to tell it truthfully.
I have been doing a little research courtesy of Wikipedia. The population of Jamaica is about 2.8 million. I know the 2005 figures for murders was 1674. I presume the population was likely about 2.6 million or so.
Now there are sometimes a bit of confusion about another Carribean nation. This is Trinidad. In the year 2000, it was 120 murders. In 2005 it had risen to 397 murders to the consternation of those who care. The population in 2005 is said to be 1.3 million.
Thus virtually half of Jamaica’s murder rate. I heard a Jamaican being interviewed in Canada, and someone dared ask him about the murder rate. He jokingly blamed the legacy of Welshman, Sir Henry Morgan, one time Governor interregnum of Jamaica. Pirates mon!
I had to chuckle.
Of course, I should have said per capita, the murder rate of TRINIDAD is half that of Jamaica.
I must be one of the few people around in Canada that saw the great sprinter, Emananuel McDonald Bailey run. Like the Sunday atheletes in England, he was absolutely deprived of first class treatment. This in the post WW2 years. Yes, 9.6 seconds at Uxbridge Stadium 1948, a Southern Counties record at the time.
Now there is a gentleman and still going strong.
