Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are Men at Work performing Who Can It Be Now?, live in Dortmund (1983, 4:33).
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.
Update: Revnant Dream notes, in the comments, that Claude Castonguay, father of the Canadian socialized single-payer and single-provider health care system, has now disowned it, calling for a mixed system including multiple private payers and providers.

“Mock travel website slams Alberta”
“Greenpeace activists are taking aim at the province’s oil industry with some savvy web work and sarcasm.
[…]
“The group has started a mock travel web site, http://www.travellingalberta.com, that pokes fun at the [‘]tar sands[‘](sic).
“Black sand beaches, tailing ponds and clear cut forests are all billed as attractions for potential visitors.
“Greenpeace [‘]tar sands[‘](sic) campaigner Mike Hudema says the province should be SPENDING TAXPAYERS MONEY[emphasis added – ed.] on cleaning up the [‘]tar sands[‘](sic) rather then re-branding its image.
“It’s in response to the government spending 25 million dollars to go around the world to promote the [‘]tar sands[‘](sic) as a sustainable industry. It’s really designed to counter that, bringing up the facts and figures or how destructive the tar sands are and what we’re going to lose if the development continues.” ”

[I’m embarrased that Hudema was born in Medicine Hat, where I hang my hat now.]

A CTV Calgary poll that needs to go horribly wrong:
“What do you think about the [‘]Travelling Alberta[‘] website?
“a) It’s an unfair portrayal of Alberta
“b) The truth hurts
“c) Harmless ”

“Study highlights need to adjust climate models”
http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSL25110164
“Sea spray and microscopic plants from the tropical Atlantic are destroying greenhouse gases in the lower atmosphere at a faster pace than scientists had thought, British researchers said on Wednesday.”
Sounds like good news, right? Sounds like the earth is better at cleaning up itself and off-setting any ‘bad’ effects of greenhouse gases, right?
Hmmm…
While the results indicate the atmosphere will clean itself faster in response to decreases in human-generated emissions, they also mean climate models slightly underestimate these greenhouse gases, said Lucy Carpenter, who worked on the study.
“At the moment climate models get the amount of ozone right but they haven’t got the destruction rates right,” said Carpenter, an atmospheric chemist at York University in Britain.
“It also means the models haven’t got the balance between production and destruction; because if methane is being destroyed more rapidly it means there must be more emmissions (sic) than we had thought.”
Of course! The models are assumed to be right, therefore the evidence points to something else — that there’s “more” GHG than thought. The exact opposite of what one would normally deduce from the evidence.
Move along. Nothing to see here. We’re still all going to die from global warming. No need for logic. Just die, already.

Politics and music don’t usually mix, but here’s a good song from Randy Newman, on the subject of the United States of America. Newman takes his predictable, almost rote shots at the Republican types, but surprisingly, for him, the song is mostly addressed to the obsessive critics of America.
It’s funny and sad, if a little too political to be touching or inspirational.

Father of Canadian healthcare system now disowning it
Back in the 1960s, Castonguay chaired a Canadian government committee studying health reform and recommended that his home province of Quebec — then the largest and most affluent in the country — adopt government-administered health care, covering all citizens through tax levies.
The government followed his advice, leading to his modern-day moniker: “the father of Quebec medicare.” Even this title seems modest; Castonguay’s work triggered a domino effect across the country, until eventually his ideas were implemented from coast to coast.
Four decades later, as the chairman of a government committee reviewing Quebec health care this year, Castonguay concluded that the system is in “crisis.”
“We thought we could resolve the system’s problems by rationing services or injecting massive amounts of new money into it,” says Castonguay. But now he prescribes a radical overhaul: “We are proposing to give a greater role to the private sector so that people can exercise freedom of choice.”

Plan G – The Greenpeace Plan for Britain.
A physics prof does the calculations for different energy scenarios assuming a carbon-free Britain. These are the implications for a no-nukes Britain on wind power.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/20/mackay_on_carbon_free_uk/print.html
Britain would be literally covered with — and girdled by — massive wind farms, tidal barriers and wave barrages, and every sizeable body of water in the land would rise and fall to the strange new tides of the national grid. We would have literally rebuilt the British Isles as a single mighty renewable generator, pouring concrete and erecting steel on a scale so far matched only by human habitation — industrialising the land and sea in a way that would make intensive agribusiness look like a wildlife refuge. And still we’d be importing power.
He looks at various other scenarios involving combinations of biomass, wind, solar, etc. and none of them are sufficient to provide all of Britain’s energy needs.
TO ALL AMERICANS who believe that Obama will save the planet by refusing Canada’s so called “dirty oil.” TO ALL CANUCKS who believe that Stepahne Dion’s carbon tax will solve your CO2 problems. You people are in for a big surprise.
The Chinese are waiting at the gates with bamboo baskets filled with mega bucks! They’re willing to finance a pipeline from Alberta’s tar sands and Saskatchewan’s heavy oil fields to the west coast where the oil gets loaded on huge tankers! Wake up my Yankee Doodle friends!! You need John McCain if you wish to fill your fuel tanks with real gasoline! In the end, big oil always wins.
This will put a tear in the eye of all but heard hearted landlubbers: ~~http://tinyurl.com/3rauuo~~
And to Lone Ranger; China will own the oil they ship in their containers and we will be happy to give it to them because we will be so damed broke. They are working on it now. Read “Operation Sidewinder”. If McCain and Harper don’t win; that is.

Over 320 comments and vast, vast, vast majority are claiming poppycock on globull warming.
Many are wondering why NY and Florida aren’t under water like Al Gorino told them they would be.
How many absolute experts or proponents of something have eventually seen the light and changed their minds,
1. the woman in Roe vs Wade, became an active anti abortion spokesperson.
2. The Founder of Greenpeace changed his mind
3 Father of healthcare now disowns it.
4. UN bans DDT, then says it is ok.
Think of all the foods that were dangerous and are now ok.
Who will be next to see the light, maybe the environmental wackos, a lot of health nuts that have told us this that and everything is bad.
How about PETA waking up to the fact animals are a food source and needed for good health.
Liberals thinking Dion’s shaftthewest plan is really a bad idea.
In response to Dion. I challenge all of you to write to Goodale and impress upon him how low his odds are in the next election. Any of you who know actual constituents of Goodale’s should make sure they are aware of what a Goodale vote will cost Saskatchewan.
