  1. john gordon miller teaches journalism at ryerson in trawna and has done so for 21 years according to the bio on his website – prior to that he was a reporter – editor for some 20 years “mostly” at the toronto star. hmmmm.
on june 5, 2008 mr. miller posted an article on his blog entitled “Steyn: I beg to differ”. this was, in turn, picked up and re-posted by regan ray at j-source (the canadian journalism project):
    http://jsource.ca/english_new/detail.php?id=2514
mr. miller is truly a well-intentioned socialist but appears to have a thought process not firing on all cylinders when it comes to free speech – does any of this sound tiresome or all-too familiar? there were 72 comments and i suspect a good many come from the ranks of working journalists. you can read them all at the link above but a summary of reaction for sda readers to comrade miller’s written opinion is as follows:
    9 comments doublepost/neutral/off-topic
    1 comment in agreement
    34 comments disagree
    27 comments strongly disagree

  2. Vitruvius, that is one of the oddest pieces of ephemera I’ve ever seen in my life. Holy smokes. Just when you think you’ve seen everything…
Here’s one for the SDA beer drinkers — it’s archival footage showing the combined members of the Pogues and the Dubliners working up a most delightful din as they perform the shaggy-dog-story-of-a-song “Irish Rover.”
The Irish Rover — as you’ll hear — was a giant ship — twenty seven masts — that set sail with one million bales of rags, two million barrels of stones, three million horsehides, four million barrels of bones, five million hogs, six million dogs and seven million barrels of porter. She’d been at sea for seven straight years when the crew became afflicted with measles, then the ship got lost in a fog, eventually striking a rock and rolling over fully nine times. Only one man survived to tell the tale — and he’s the guy singing about it.
A couple of amusing details to note: during the opening you can see an applauding audience member wielding a cigarette; then, onstage, Shane McGowan’s smoking one too when he’s not drinking beer. Pre-EU, obviously.
Also — anyone who’s been in a band will find this amusing — at the start of the last verse, around 3:15, you can see Shane McGowan start to sing the wrong verse; he catches himself instantly, but he’s already earned the disapproving “how many times did we rehearse this” glance of his elder, the rather pompous Ronnie Drew. McGowan is a bit steamed, and for the rest of the verse looks — and sings — like a chastened but resentful delinquent, but then, mischievously, at the end, he, uhhh, how you say, re-seizes the song most forcefully, throwing the band into happy overdrive. A hoo ha ha ha ha.

  3. Hard to believe that the world was once black and white!! A colorless void where men were men and women played Xylophones!! Now that is the kind of world that I love!! We had two channels, CBC and CTV. Saturday afternoon we’d watch “Cowpoke Cavalcade.” Four hours straight of “shoot em up” westerns in Black and White. That’s where I met Tonto and Silver. We’ve been friends ever since!!

I remember Grandpa playing this one on the old RCA. He served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in WW1 and had many friends who had been “On The Road”.

  5. I’m glad you liked that EBD. And if I may riff off your comment…

    Twenty-seven masts? You were lucky.
We only had a three-masted clipper.
Clipper? Oh, we used to dream of a clipper.
There were 170 of us on a two-masted schooner.
    Masts? You were lucky.
We used to have to spend 16 hours a day
holding up our beadsheets to the wind.
    Wind? Luxury.
We used to have to get up three hours
before we went to bed and work 27 hours
a day on the oars in the bowels of the ship.
    Right.
Ship? We didn't have a ship. We had to make our
voyages carrying everything on our backs while
swimming, unpaid and for permission to swim,
and then the captain would slash us in two with
a cutlass before we went to bed.
    Aye.
And you tell that to kids today.
      They won't believe you.

  8. Compare this trial in Australia with what the Islamists are doing here. This article is about the incident 2 years ago. The simularities are like from the same script. I read a post at Ezra’s that had a bit about this . I backtracked to find the entire incident. Its scary how close in tactics they use to persecute these Ministers as they are Styen or Ezra with the Six. Using of course the Auzzie variation of the HRC’s.

  12. Gandhi, Churchill, and the British Withdrawal from India
AEI Bradley Lecture, 2 June 2008
Arthur Herman, author of the New York Times bestseller How the Scots Invented the Modern World, discusses his new book Gandhi and Churchill: The Epic Rivalry That Destroyed an Empire and Forged Our Age.
Dr. Herman will discuss the forty-year rivalry between these two political icons, and reveal how it led inevitably to the British exit from India. He will also show how the humanitarian catastrophe of partition and ethnic cleansing in post-independence India and Pakistan offer powerful lessons for American policy in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  13. Patrick Clawson and Michael Eisenstadt, The Last Resort: Consequences of Preventive Military Action against Iran
Accepted wisdom suggests that preventive military action against Iran’s nuclear program would entail significant risks and uncertain prospects of success. Much of the public debate surrounding these risks and uncertainties has focused on strictly military-technical considerations. Although important, these issues do not address the key political and contextual questions underlying any discussion of prevention and deterrence. For example, how would Iran — and the international community — respond to military strikes? Would such action convince the regime to permanently abandon its nuclear activities, or would Tehran simply rebuild? And what effect would such action have on subsequent diplomatic or military efforts?

  14. A few months ago there was an earth hour where we were all asked to turn off lights etc to reduce ghg. With all the floodss and evacuations and other destruction in the US, and thousands evacuated, how much were ghg emmissions lowered during this period. It stands to reason that all those homes were not using power, cars were not driven, public transit was stopped etc.
And when all the destroyed property is replaced or rebuilt, what will that do to the so called recession in the states.

Uhm, okay. Even a cursory Wikipedia review would have shown them how stupid this sentence is.
Further, it isn’t really a zero-emission vehicle. I mean, where do they get the hydrogen from? It’s not like there’s a hydrogen lake out there.
I’ll borrow a sentence from another cause with which I wholeheartedly agree: FIRE. THEM. ALL.

    By THE CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO – A non-profit group supporting the Tamil Tigers has been added to Canada’s list of known terrorism groups and banks have been instructed to seize its assets, Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day said Monday.
The World Tamil Movement has been designated as a terrorist group based on reasonable grounds to believe it has participated in or facilitated a terrorist activity, or is knowingly acting on behalf of, at the direction, or in association with a terror group, the government said.

“Here’s Our New Policy On A.P. stories: They’re Banned *******
Posted on 16 June 2008 by Jack
The stories over the weekend were bad enough – the Associated Press, with a long history of suing over quotations from their articles, went after Drudge Retort for having the audacity to link to their stories along with short quotations via reader submissions. Drudge Retort is doing nothing different than what Digg, TechMeme, Mixx and dozens of other sites do, and frankly the fact that they are being linked to should be considered a favor. After heavy criticism over the last few days, the A.P. is in damage control mode, says the NYTimes, and retreating from their earlier position. But from what I read, they’re just pushing their case further.
They do not want people quoting their stories, despite the fact that such activity very clearly falls within the fair use exception to copyright law. They claim that the activity is an infringement.
    […]
So here’s our new policy on A.P. stories: they don’t exist. We don’t see them, we don’t quote them, we don’t link to them. They’re banned until they abandon this new strategy, and I encourage others to do the same until they back down from these ridiculous attempts to stop the spread of information around the Internet.”(jacks)

Despite the breadth of solutions offered in the article, I think it’s pretty simple. So, in the spirit of saving money, here goes:
Motivated people respond well to being empowered, autonomous, and treated with respect.
Oh, dang. All of these are not innate to a bureaucracy. Nor non-value added process centered task performance – versus a results oriented organization.

“After allowing the issue to be discussed openly in the first days after the quake, Chinese authorities soon began a systematic campaign to quell the debate, worried that it could grow into anti-government protests.
Domestic media were instructed to tone down their coverage of the issue. Parents of the dead children were barred from entering some of the collapsed school sites last week. Foreign journalists were blocked from entering the sites, and at least seven were detained by police when they tried to visit last week.
Parents who tried to file a lawsuit were dragged away from a court building by police.
Beijing has tried to defuse the issue by promising investigations and offering compensation to parents. It pledged to introduce tougher building codes for schools and other public buildings in earthquake zones. And it ordered local governments to conduct new safety inspections to identify dangerous school buildings.
But in the media and on the Internet, the debate has continued to flourish, despite the government’s efforts.”

  37. Who’s behind a better lithium-ion hybrid/EV battery? Why, it’s Exxon Mobil
When we write about Exxon Mobil here on AutoblogGreen, we mostly do it to point out just how much money they make. In 2006, after all, the company did make $1,252 every second. Sometimes we write about their shady ethanol studies or other ways the giant oil company is trying to buy off scientists. What I’m saying is that it’s not too often that we say somewhat nice things about Exxon Mobil. Today we do. The AP has a story about Exxon’s new greener car announcement.
Apparently, the latest technological advancement the company is working on (with Japan’s Tonen Chemical) is a new film for lithium-ion batteries that would make electric and hybrid cars more efficient and affordable. Exxon will release more information at the Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition (aka EVS23) in Anaheim. I’ll be attending that conference, and will make sure to bring you more details from Exxon. [Source: AP via CNN Money]…
