We had been playing with homemade parachute toys, you know, a paper napkin with lengths of thread tied to each corner of the unfolded napkin, the opposite ends of the thread tied to a 9/16 s.a.e. fine thread nut. Deftly fold the napkin, gently wrap the threads around the napkin and throw the whole shebang as high as you can up in the air…. viola the nut gently parachutes to the ground. What fun.
    Take one large card board box approximately 2ftx3ftx3ft, punch holes in the four corners of the top of the box, tie four approximately five foot lengths of 3/8 inch cotton rope through the holes on each corner of the box, tie the other ends of rope to the four corners of your mother’s largest bed spread, take entire apparatus to mother and father’s second story bedroom with balcony, add little baby brother and push off balcony…. the bed spread never opened up, never left his little head. Later in life he had three sons and my little sister had three of her own, no brother tossing was allowed,ritual lasted only one generation.

    How representative is this practice of a religion/people? Probably a lot less representative in terms of proportion than alchohlic wife and children-beaters. And the authorities can intervene at any point in both cases, but they only do so when they are asked to.

I’m sure westerners might see something like acupuncture being practised and think WTF, but research (western style research) has shown those eastern kinds of approaches work. How come no one here is asking or interested in the symbolism of this ritual?
    The answer is that you don’t have any curiousity about these rituals because you’ve already decided they are not legitimate on any level.
    We can park our infants in front of a cathode ray machine for all the hours of the day and night, but these folks are nuts because they engage in a ritual that likely gives the child a sense of flying or floating.

    I am not concerned with the rabble. Way above that by now. Again, the point: there are rituals, including the one that Kate has chosen to mock, in other cultures and those rituals are founded in understandings within that culture.
    Do you think for one moment that some of our western (white) rituals don’t look odd to others? Grow up for God’s sake. Part of the response to this video, by some, is to suggest the babes are being harmed or damaged and that the damage might be long lasting.
    I counter with a comment about the short and/or long term damage that may be a consequence of a western parenting practise (tv set baby sitter) and the drivel spews forth.
    I appeal to some of Kate’s more intelligent readers to at least be adult enough to concede (in private)there are valid cultural practises outside of North America.

    My point is that it is a little more dangerous than dunking a child in a bucket of water, which, if anything, is as tormenting as a freefall, but its an article of faith. No more, and no less. It has nothing to do with Islam or Hinduism or whatever. Its a local tradition that probably dates back to as long ago as the Ancient Greeks. India and China are continuous civilizations, with many traditions and beliefs surviving since time immemorial.

    My guess is that she would like those standards taken at least semi-seriously. She has, once or twice, gotten pretty pissed at me for breaching the guidelines. If you go over this thread you’ll see that my comments are some of the least insulting, employ relatively few personal attacks etc.
    I’ve made my point. My habit is to check for well thought out responses. There have been one or two on this thread. I don’t think that’s flattering of this readership.

    Support the premise of freedom of speech/expression/opinion, but demand the banning of anything that doesn’t conform with your views.
    Conservatives don’t say “I don’t like it. But let it be”. They say “I don’t like it. Get it out of my face (and ban it from public broadcasting)”.
