Totally unfair and discriminatory. What about swim times for the muslimas?
I can understand catering to the needs of particular people (in particular minorities) in both public and private institutions but it really should not be dictated from the government. Basically if a women’s group, Christian group, Muslim group, or pretty much any group wants to organize a private swim time with a pool that is reasonable; it seems unreasonable for the government to say that their pools will provide private swim times for these groups though …

Our area was the stage for a large Sikh parade Saturday. An event that brought in 100,000 people. Canadians were given the finger, according to a letter writer in the local paper, by organizers who displayed portraits of radical terrorist martyrs in the stage area. The parade ties up a large area of the city of Surrey from 9:30 AM til 4:30 PM and later for the traffic to clear.
The only politician who did not participate in the parade was the Mayor, Dianne Watts, who stated the obvious reasons. Our Premier feigned “other commitments”.

A variation of this came to Mississauga about a month ago. The Mississauga News proudly trumpeted the fact that swim times will be now set aside exclusively for muslim women, allegedly due to their “need” to maintain modesty.
The writer of the article, whom I’m willing to bet was not muslim, stated that muslim women must wear the hijab.
The editorial in the same edition also repeated this nonsense; it is hard enough for muslim women who want to go about without a head covering to face the daily pressure from the more fundamentalist of their co-religionists, it’s quite another to have idiot dhimmis pushing the same stuff down their throats.
Logically, you would think these same Muslims would also ask for designated times to use public restrooms.

In a similar vein it still bothers me or maybe its just the irony of having a muslim woman in a headscarf checking passenger security at the airport. Almost with few exceptions every plane bombing or hijacking has involved muslims and we spend billions in providing security against this threat. Now I have to take my shoes off and my 60 year old wife is subjected to a detailed search because of this MUSLIM threat.

I would suggest that there wouldn’t be a problem if the muslim built their own pool with their own (non-taxpayer-subsidized) money but that wouldn’t be accurate either.

When I was a kid, all the people I knew wanted to OWN their own place and be their own boss. A gov’t job was the last resort for anyone who was really ‘down and out’. Welfare and UI were never mentioned because both carried shame for the person reduced to such straits.

Today, at my local grocery, I saw a sign-up notice for a recreational soccer league – for Muslims only. I wonder how fast the screams would start if someone tried to start a Christian only league? However, public pools aren’t “free” access. People still have to pay a user fee (and nowadays it’s more like a $10 per swim hit). Those fees go a long way to paying the bills. If too few people use the facility – it closes. It’ll take some time but economic laws do eventually trump bad social policy.
