Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Well, that could only happen on the Left Coast, couldn’t it?
Somehow, I’m not reassured…
The part that’s impossible to swallow is that there was a “deportation order to Rwanda before the attack, but has not been removed from Canada because he’s waiting to be tried on charges of sexually assaulting minors.”
So, let me get this straight. If you want to avoid being deported to Canada, you have to….
This is so messed up… there are no words.
OOOPS.
I mean avoid being deported FROM Canada.
And WTF, why was he not in jail? At what point can Canadians start to sue government departments for failing to do their duty for citizens?
Lori – At what point can Canadians start to sue government departments for failing to do their duty for citizens?
I am afraid that you fundamentally mis-understand how politicians and bureaucrats see themselves in a socialist system.
They have all the power, rights and money.
YOU have all the responsibilty and duties!
They don’t see this as an example of how the system failed, as the victimisation of a normal, mainstream person does not count as a failure of the system. That normal, mainstream person had NO right of protection as far as they are concerned.
In fact, they will consider this as a complete sucess as they were able to keep the idiot, oops “real victim”, in Canada for a longer period.
Thus, the woman is this article should feel proud that she has done her part in helping this poor oppressed man find true freedom and liberation in Canada.
Enter Leftie Anon with supporting statements in 3..2..1..
I, personally, do not believe that there is a pervasive plot in the civil service to screw over Canadians. There may be a few such individuals with an agenda, but they are not organized or have any power.
From my experience within government bureaucracies, the problem is a lack of direction. The actual people processing claims / individuals / situations have to follow extremely rigid directives. They stick to them blindly. They are actually quite good at enforcing the rules they have been given.
In this case, there is no directive that someone who has been rejected for refugee status and has been accused of a violent crime should be held in custody until they are either a) tried and found guilty and deported, or b) tried and found innocent and deported.
Some may ask, why bother trying them at all, if you will just deport them, and there is a case to be made for this. However, there is also a case to be made for putting on the record those who are found guilty, because there is a bit of a revolving door on these people, and if he tries to come back, he can be instantaneously booted out if the record of a crime is present. I’m not sure which is the best answer on that detail…
The other side of that argument is that he has merely been accused of a crime… how can we jail him? Isn’t there a presumption of innocence until proven guilty? I don’t have a facile answer for that either, but my thinking is that it would go alone the lines of
1) he has been rejected for status.
2) He does NOT have the same rights as a citizen. He will be told this when he enters the country, and will be told that if he stands accused of a violent crime, he will be jailed on presumption of guilt. An incentive to keep the nose clean, if nothing else.
3) He can be given the option to immediately leave the country, or stay in jail until his issue is resolved.
4) We divert money in the refugee department budget from the intake department to the enforcement department.
It’s not a simple issue. The real problem is that we are letting the wrong people get into the country in the first place. It seems like an overwhelming number of the news stories about violent or criminal refugee claimants relate to ones who have come from Somalia/Rwanda/”insert miscellaneous African hellhole here”. I don’t see why we do this. If the money we spent on these people here was to be spent over there, we would help vastly more people.
You RACIST bastards!
but, but, but, MULTICULTURALISM!
Gun ownership is the only answer because it really doesn’t matter in the middle of the night what the legal status of a machete weilding intruder in your bedroom is.
Lots of obvious compelling questions, for starters, what kind of background checks does immigration do? You can bet he didn’t turn into a violent sociopath only after he got to Canada.
Kate McMillan: don’t you ever take a day off?
“Alex Ishmail Murwanashyaka has been charged with break-and-enter, unlawful confinement, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, robbery, using a mask during an offence, obstructing police and fraud.”
Is it just me or does being charged with “using a mask during an offense” makes it sound as if the criminals who have the “decency” to take off their mask before attacking, raping, torturing or murdering their innocent victim get shorter time in prison?
Are liberal judge more lenient on criminals who do not wear a mask ” during the offense”?
Are liberal judges also more lenient on criminals who were wearing a clean shirt and smelled good
” during an offense”?
It just sounds very weird to me that wearing a mask makes a difference in such a serious crime.
But then again there is not much that liberals have done to Canada in my lifetime ( I’m 48 ) that does not seem weird to me…
OK, I’ll resend to get through the censorship.
Hang the f****r.
Then deport him.
Lori–regarding (2) in your post–when those ship loads of Chinese ‘refugees’ were trying to enter Canada, didn’t the Liberal government at the time(Chretien) state that ‘once they reach Canada’s 200 mile line they DO have the rights of Canadian citizens’?
And the rights of Canadian citizens compared to the rights of Canadian criminals do not compare. Criminals of all stripes have more rights in Canada.
I agree, there is no pervasive plot in the civil service to screw over Canadians.
Having a plot would imply organisation, control, and some intelligence behind it all. This simply isn’t possible by bureaucrats who just mind-numbingly apply procedures.
However, given the pervasive stupidity of the OUTCOMES of the actions by >90% of bureaucrats it becomes obvious that there doesn’t need to be such a plot.
It is simply inherent to the design!
Bureaucracy is genetically pre-disposed to:
1) replicate
2) devour funding
3) over time, reduce provision of services to “the people”
4) and finally, destroy the host society.
Cynical, yes – and I will continue to be until civil servants are forced to act upon that “servant” word.
George – quite possibly Cretin did say that. Doesn’t mean it is right, or the law, or public policy, or can’t be changed. I think that this is where the discussion needs to occur.
I DON’T think that most Canadians, asked whether refugee claimants should have identical rights to those of landed immigrants or Citizens, would say that they should.
Johnny – Kate McMillan: don’t you ever take a day off?
and herein lies the difference between one who actually works for a living and your typical leftie (who of course, either works for the gov’t, union, or puffs lovely smelling smoke out back while “writing”)
BTW – how can “non-profit” (from your website) be classed as an industry? Oh wait, yes, you are a lefty, sorry!
Unfortunately, saying a refugee has all the rights of a Canadian citizen isn’t saying much.
Penny, do you realize that this poor woman will heal from her wounds a lot faster than the unending nightmare she’d be in if she had shot that guy?
Welcome to CanaDUH, where it is better to be cut up by a armed maniac than it is to successfully defend yourself. No, I mean really better. No court fees, no new ulcer from worry, no loss of every stick you own to lawyers fees, and hey, free health care!
As I’ve said here many times, I’ve got more rights as a VISITOR in Arizona than I do as a citizen in Canaduh.
Thank yew, Liberals.
Everything that I have ever seen in government offices indicates to me that the front line people who deal with the public are brainless desk jockeys just trying to get through the day with the least possible hassle. They are not evil. They just have not the slightest incentive to do a good job, and many disincentives to try to identify and address problems.
Expecting them to think, make an effort, or solve a problem that is not outlined in their “policies and procedures” manual will always be disappointed.
johnny maudlin – union activist and canucks fan.
Kate and the rest of us can never take the day off until the blogs have been purged of leftists.
Right is right and Left is gauche.
John Daly (Johnny Maudlin) thinks our soldiers fall into the same moral category as Taliban head cutters who hide behind women when they fight.
I think that’s all that needs to be said about Mr. Daly.
Lori-
Having been one of those brainless desk jockeys
I couldn’t agree more! The problem is that they are so controlled with policies, procedures, disincentives, idiotic behaviour codes and union rules, they really don’t have much choice.
If one wants to have a career beased on merit, ability and productivity, DON’T become a Public Administrator ( that’s Civil Servant in newspeak-
It was changed because some of our coloured employees thought servant was racist.)
“Gun ownership is the only answer because it really doesn’t matter in the middle of the night what the legal status of a machete weilding intruder in your bedroom is.
I second that!
Refugee officials need time to be able to check the background of the refugees and a streamlined process for deportaion. One way to reduce refugee crime and costs is to be discriminatory.Deny refugee claimants Canadian rights, using the notwithstanding clause if necessary. Of course the progressives/media would squeal but a good PR campaign that highlights the crimes and cost of refugees would be enough to gain approval from common sense Canadians.
Then if there is NO plot why haven’t we changed the law that grants more rights to refugee’s than citizens?
Why is it taboo to talk about it?
If there is no plot how did the law granting more rights to refugees than citizens get written?
Perhaps there is a plot called liberal fascism and it’s enforced by political correctness, self-styled “progressive” subterfuge and our silence.
We let these people into the country because we supposedly need them “to do jobs Canadians won’t do”. You know, the really crappy unskilled jobs that pay $12/hour.
Here’s a thought. Let’s close the borders and cut off welfare to anyone who can’t prove that they aren’t physically disabled or suffering from a bona-fide mental illness (and, no, watching Oprah doesn’t count). That should free up some bodies for the unskilled jobs and we don’t have to import so many murdering psychopaths.
Life in Rwanda is so miserable compared to Canadian prison, that I am sure we can just deport the offenders like him w/o any kind of trial. Going back to Rwanda is a punishment in itself, and does not cost Canadian taxpayer more than a one way airline ticket, and that’s generous! I’d preferred if we send them back by a raw boat, launched from a military frigate in the middle of North Atlantic.
To be honest I am surprised they are actually considering deportation. In Britain the chances of deporting a Rwandan are slim to non existent. Same goes for countries like Somalia, China, Sudan, Algeria etc. etc. ad nauseum.
Today we learn that one of Osama’s homies (Abu F**ktarda or some such)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/04/09/nterror209.xml
will be allowed to stay in Britain and carry on plotting the downfall of the West because sending him to Libya would violate his human rights.
I did read somewhere that the Canadians had a problem with Chinese illegals some years ago. The Chinese government refused to recognise them as Chinese citizens. So the Canadian government told China economic aid was going to be cut. All of a sudden the Chinese agreed they were their citizens. Britain doesn’t have the balls to do this. They wouldn’t even stand up to the French when tens of thousands of “asylum seekers” flooded into Britain from France.
Cal 2 Right is right and Left is just sinister!
When I say no “pervasive plot” by the Civil Service I didn’t mean plotting by liberal politicians and some senior “socialist” bureaucrats.
Yes, they plot! It’s what they do; sometimes all they do.
Maybe it is about how to smear Harper, sometimes about smearing the USA, or about how to win the next election by allowing immigration of sure-fire liberal voters.
But your run-of-the-mill bureaucrat isn’t in on the secret, just the pawn (usually willing) in the game!
“Kate McMillan: don’t you ever take a day off?”
Apparently not. Got a problem, portajohnny? Reality gettting on your nerves?
Sean-
Watching Oprah SHOULD count!
Frenchie- The senior ranks of the civil service
are all staffed by hordes of left-wingnuts that buy into every flavor of the week. They have imposed everything from “speech codes” to the infamous “one tonne challenge” on those minions!
Oh, and if you don’t donate to their United Way campaign, you may as well forget being considered for promotion.
I have stories that would curl your hair.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles and anywhere globally that the socialist’s/liberal’s failed immigration policies are in play for that matter here’s what you get:
Woo-whee, the testimony was riveting this morning before the Los Angeles City Council when a group of black residents pleaded with the 15 elected council members to rescind Special Order 40, the longtime local rule protecting illegal immigrants from arrest by the LAPD.
The black residents are seeking a decision by the council to enact the so-called Jamiel’s Law, named after Jamiel Shaw, a promising and law-abiding 17-year-old high school student allegedly shot by an illegal immigrant, 18th Street Gang member Pedro Espinoza. The noxious Espinoza, who has a massively long rap sheet, was arrested and then released by the LAPD shortly before he allegedly murdered Jamiel.

Notce the pattern: criminal behavior, long rap sheet, arrest, special legal/illegal immigration status facilitating easy release.

I remember a few weeks ago I was in the passport office waiting to get mine done, and saw this tiny little 50-ish employee there telling people to tell their cellphones off. She was telling everyone – little people, huge people, male or female, women in hijabs with babies, businessmen in thousand dollar suits.
Some people tried to ignore her, so she came back and stood “over” them until they turned it off.
It was beautiful to watch. It certainly would take a bit of courage I would think.
Yet, she did it, no problem, because there was a sign on the wall that said “no cellphones”.
So government employees can do what they are told to do…. they just need to be told the right thing. Policies.
What’s the problem with keeping criminals in JAIL?
Pierre Elliot Trudeau should be burning in hell !
Everyone should really check out Barbara Kay’s comment at the NP…
http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fullcomment/archive/2008/04/08/barbara-kay-multiculturalism-was-canada-s-biggest-mistake.aspx
Beautifully direct and well-said.
Online revenue ain’t making it either since who wants to go to the website of a dead-tree product they don’t read in the first place? And even if they did, the money sites get from ads online just isn’t at all in the realm of what they get for print ads.
Which is why, even though I’m curious as to what the enemy is up to, I don’t click on the NYT’s site. I don’t want them garnering my clicks toward ad revenues.
Hollywood is getting the same harsh lesson with revenues sinking like a rock. The same liberal mental midgets still don’t get it after everyone of their anti-troops Iraq war movies have bombed at the box offices. The liberal brain is impervious to cause and effect logic.
Rack up another one for the IRB/our pathetic judges – and hope that it never gets to the supreme court or things will become a total mess and continue to seal, even tighter, our non-deportation of refugees who simply can’t handle what has been offered to them.
Perhaps we should be talking in terms of “exporting” rather than “deporting” this particular class of law-breaking individual. It could become a whole new class of garbage and the supreme court/IRBs would not even have to become involved.
It begs the point – who continues to do the screening for people who are allowed to enter Canada. After two years – we should be seeing some significant changes here but we are not nor do any appear to be in the making. If these changes cannot be made when the Liberals are in total disarray, they are never going to be made. This gov’t has the capacity to act as a majority right now and they are picking very low-hanging fruit while avoiding the really tough issues.
If people enter illegally – prima face, they should have no rights and be shipped (exported) right back out ASAP. Many of them are entitled to many more entitlements than people born in Canada and this is just plain wrong. If there are something like 27% illegal aliens in our prison system right now – then line up the planes, put a label on them, and ship them out.
The noise about changes to Immigration seem to be just that – noises, because what is coming out is not dealing with where the deeper problems are found.
I am still trying to get my head around why politicians want to ban all hand guns. People need an equalizer for bureaucratic mistakes (either legislated or procedural) otherwise innocent people are scarred for life or dead. Bad people need to know there is a plan B after that get out of jail free card.
As I get older , more frail , vulnerable and isolated, cold steel has a special warmth for me.
Most low level civil servants are not part of the liberal plot,
Turning them into little robots that follow blindly the strange multi-culti rules that are slowly destroying Canada is part of the plot.
But if we incarcerate rapists and murderers, won’t that make us just like the Americans?
Lori: except that banning people’s free speech in the government office is not allowed under the charter. It matters not that the speech is assisted by a radio transmitting device. I would not comply, even though I don’t own a cellphone. If I had to use the services of a government office where certain types of speech were not allowed, I’d first run to the nearest Future shop to buy one.
“But if we incarcerate rapists and murderers, won’t that make us just like the Americans?”
No, we’ll still be significantly poorer, pollute more, and have less freedom than Americans. Which is why I am so happy to be interviewing with an American firm on Friday, at 2/3 my salary. Green card here I come!
Most low level civil servants are not part of the liberal plot,

I heartily agree!
NO Aaron, there’s no such thing as free speech in a Government office. I personally witnessed the persecution of an individual who sent an email decrying the union’s spending of part of his union dues on special “social justice issues”. He claimed they were supporting
“Sodomites and Marxist Insurgents”. The email was dutifully handed over to management by the recipient because the recipient would have been also charged with “hate speech” just for receiving it and not disclosing it.
The poor bugger got a number of weeks “vacation”, without pay of course.
Where is the lawyer to answer my statute barred class action question. Mischief may be afoot denying me access to data again.
“OK, I’ll resend to get through the censorship.

jlc – I like that idea. I think I’ll start a new company!
Deportation In A Bag
It could have an ecological twist like – ‘Providing an efficient way to remove toxic waste from the landscape and increase social safety’
I bet I could qualify for a venture capital grant or maybe a big, fat, government contract!
