  1. What happened at Belsan is chilling especially when you think it could happen anywhere in Canada. And, despite our local police presence, are they really enough? If we have to call out the military, how fast is that going to happen? Shudder.

    FP: Tell us a bit about dissent and conformity under Stalin.
    Kuromiya: This is a fascinating yet extraordinarily difficult issue. We know that many people supported Stalin and his terror. Of course we don’t know how many. Less known is resistance and dissent. The partial opening of the archives in the former Soviet Union in the 1990s dramatically enriched our knowledge. Many people apparently believed in Stalin’s heart and mind. Many others rejected Stalin and his regime. There are plenty of archival documents to show both sides. Opinions normally are sharply divided: some people (historians) emphasize the conformity side and others the dissent side exclusively and they dispute each other. Yet the picture is far more complex. Everyone had to conform, so the outward conformity did not mean inward dissent. How does one know? It is almost impossible because people did not normally disclose their private thoughts and feelings. All non-conformity was driven underground. Finding widespread resistance is in a sense much easier, because the Soviet-era archives are full of in formation on it. Yet this, too, is misleading, because the police presented a society full of enemies and created enemies of loyal citizens.
    Stalin set up a trap for future historians so that they’d believe that the country were so full of dangerous enemies that he needed terrorize them. One cannot fall into this trap. (Many historians have fallen, however.) There is no doubt that dissent existed. Otherwise, the Soviet Union would have been a utopian society, and Stalin would have even been proud of it. He knew and we know that many people lived a dual life — external compliance and internal doubt. We simply don’t know the co-relation of conformity and dissent in Stalin’s Soviet Union: there simply are not reliable data, because no free elections, no free polls, no free press existed. Yet Stalin and his secret police almost certainly faced the same problem as we do now: they were not sure of the actual extent of dissent in Soviet society. This meant that Stalin had to play safe by eliminating all potential dissenters.

  7. Well, AGW has finally affected my business. While in the process of signing a lease for one of my student rentals, I mentioned the fact that I would be changing the hot water system from old technology to an in-line system. One of the girls got all excited about saving seals or whales or something. I told her that it had nothing to do with anything but saving money(I cover hot water). She started giving me the fruit fly talking points in a very forceful manner. I then proceeded to rip up the lease, and told her that I did not want any leftarded morons renting from me.

  24. The environmental crowd have just delivered the first nail into the coffin. With the “new” carbon tax in BC this morning there will be a few meetings in the board rooms of some manufacturing plants in BC about deciding where to re-locate offshore. Make no mistake the previous NDP government here had already shrouded and coffined the body before confirming death but this liberal government is now in the process on nailing the coffin shut and burying this province alive. This financial neutral carbon tax will kill every gas station within fifty miles of the BC border, and that is only the first cut in a long slow bloody death. The liberal/socialist mindset here has no clue about developing a sustainable economy. The forest industry has all but disappeared, the fishing industry can’t bail fast enough to keep the boat afloat, agriculture has been and always will be a cameo appearance, and the education system keeps pumping out leftards that couldn’t present a financial paper if their lives depended on it, and this provinces life now depends on it.

    In Barak Obama’s victory/campaign speech that ran 45 minutes in length,following his win in Wisconsin last night, he said the following in amongst his promises of 15 chickens in every pot and 4 cars in every driveway, paid college for everyone, and universal health coverage for all that is equivalent to what he enjoys as a Senator:
    “I will stop global warming.”
    Get that? He promised “I-will-stop-global-warming.”
    Four billion years of climate change and we now have the *man* who is going to stop it in it’s tracks. This *man* is not a mortal. Sometime soon expect to see him attempt to walk on water.
    If Obama gets to be POTUS for 4 years he will be the last Dem/Liberal that resides in the White House for about 5 decades.

  37. Back in December, I recommended oil and gold, and some people laughed at me. Well, oil is over $100, and gold is nearly $940. I still think they are great investments, and despite the naysayers, I continue to recommend them. Laugh at me all you want; I’m laughing all the way to the bank.

  50. One of the things that I think is totally regrettable about the BC carbon tax is that rural (and for the most part not wealthy) people will be hit hardest. I have friends in Vancouver and they very seldom drive anywhere as there is good public transporation. I also have friends in one of the smaller communities in the Kooteneys and driving is a life-line for them. They don’t even have a grocery store in their town. Many in the town are involved (or were) in logging and they have the sort of “back to the land” lifestyle that makes trucks most practical (they build their own houses, haul around saw mills, etc.) I see this as a victory for the urban elites over the much more marginal rural population. I think this is a shame — especially when the whole carbon tax idea is built on a lie about global warming.
