“I recently attended a conference in Budapest, where I made the mistake of saying that Europe was in danger of ‘going under’ to Islam. It was something like passing loud and smelly wind in public. Not too many people wanted to talk to me after that, and no one wanted to talk about my remark. What’s so appalling is that it’s precisely that failure to face the problem that makes it so likely.
“Here Melanie Phillips pulls no punches…”

Ummmm…time to corner the stock on the burka market in the EuroIslamnia.
Don’t worry about Europe,it’s a bit late for them but they should be a guide for what not to do here. We should worry about our own country, there are many ominous signs right now and we’re dozing through them.
We may be in for some very big problems if we allow people to buy up parcels of acreage within or near our cities and create a communities based on their religion. This amounts to ghettoizing and it never bodes well for any country or community.
It’s not the way to build or retain a strong Nation.
That’s the problem – no one wants to say anything.
But what is that they don’t want to say and why? Is that utmost cowardice, fear of getting one’s throat slit? Than why the hell don’t they scream about that fear, why don’t they get the authorities to intervene as they are supposed to and deport those who could retaliate violently to critique?
I really want to hear what they don’t want to say.
It’s hard to believe that their mind is just blank – they know something, that causes them to stay silent. It’s critical to know what is not being said.
“To which one can only say ‘Bravo’ to these courageous Muslims for reasserting truth and sanity in the face of a lethally deluded Jewish liberal.”
I know so many “lethally deluded” Jewish and non-Jewish liberals it makes sad mad anxious and frustrated all at once.
Most of my Jewish relatives have replaced Judaism with Liberalism, and they have become impermeable to logic and reason.
Yet, to the likes of jeffy and warren, Melanie’s writing are ‘inciteful of hatred’ against muslims.
Pointing out facts, especially backed by History, is hate speech in their reasoning.
Muslim culture shock is the least of a sovereign European’s worries….they have to figure out how to reign-in the the “uber”-government of the EU central authority before it destroys all the nations under its anti sovereignty agenda.
If Muslim culture incompatibility is becoming an unmanaged civil friction in Europe it’s only because the EU council who set immigration policy want it to be.
What was it Marx said about homogenzing a culture with immigration??… this is part of the deconstruction stage of old nation-state Europe…homogenization of culture, religion, economics, money and language and erasure of borders for trade, commerce, and worker migration…then the new order is built up from the ashes by the new central technocracy’s engineers…so what if this planned cultural homogenization has a bit of temporary cultural balkanizing effects?/…the cultures complaining will soon be sublimated into the EU homogeneous one government, one culture, one state EU technocratic utopia.
All that really matters is that a single all powerful centralized European regime rises from the chaos of nation-state deconstruction. It’s all about the union lads!…don’t sweat the small stuff…the technocrat engineers know what’s best for Europe….H. G. Wells, Zamyatin, Huxley, Orwell and Russel told us this was coming…but everyone thought these prototype political visionaries were writing fiction.
Europe is dead. Whatever last vestiges that exist of personal freedom will be erased when all signatories to the Lisbon Treaty are in place. Brown will deliver without a referendum vote Britain to this undemocratic travesty. The elites in Brussels will have full control without any democratic input from EU citizens.
It’s no coincidence that militant Islam has chosen this moment to reclaim and expand territory. The Muslims see the socialized brain dead Euroweenies for what they are, easy pickings.
We’re next if we don’t beat back socialism in words and deeds.
Actually, I think it is already too late for Canada. We are only about a half step behind Europe, and it is most likely far too late to reverse course. We have enacted our own thought police in the various HRCs, race politics dominates every party. Or have you forgotten about the racist Jew leaflet passed around to thwart Rae’s leadership bid? I think the only long term survival strategy with a chance to be successful is applying for US citizenship.
They have already beaten us, here in our own country.
Kevin…the US is in no better shape than we are,if the dems get in then we are all hooped.
“Kevin…the US is in no better shape than we are,if the dems get in then we are all hooped.”
You’re hooped either way…the Dems will deliver the US into UN global socialist hegemony and sell the economy out to the Chinese and mortgage the nation’s productivity to the world bank cartel by debt-financing social support systems for illegal aliens…another neo-con government will bankrupt the nation paying for disastrous foreign policy, and put the nation into receivership to the foreigners who hold most of your debt…and Both these internationalist technocratic parties will continue to escalate the quasi martial law surveillance state that they started with the domestic terrorism hysteria…bottom line: the American people have to take their constitutional republic back from the self serving technocrats and autocratic internationalists who are pushing these ruinous agendas on you…same people are ruining Europe and they have a firm foothold in Ottawa as well….we just have a temporary pause in the aggression of their agenda with this Harper care taker givernment…after Harper goes the anti-soveringty agenda of Canadian transnational feudelists will continue.
The political battle of the 21st century will not be between left and right but between individual freedom and technocratic tyranny.

Asshats.
As we speak, Canada’s foreign minister promised $300 million of our money as a free gift to pali. How do you like about $50 taken without consent from every working Canadian and given to those, who fire mortars, kassams and katyushas into Israel?
Don’t be silent, scream, talk, yell, write letters!
phew, wlmr – you sound like a Canadian version of Ron Paul.
I disagree with your view. I think we have to acknowledge that the world is no longer operative as isolate and therefore sovereign nation-states. That was possible with both lower populations and in the pre-electronic technological era when communications actually acknowledged the restrictions of both space and time. That era is over. We are now in a fundamentally altered global geopolitics and economics.
We are now a globally networked economic system. We have to learn to function and develop such a profoundly restructured system – a system that operates totally, completely differently than the old Sovereign States set in specific time and specific space.
Interactions between groups (societies, corporations), individuals are faster, more flexible, more open to redefinition. Thought processes, innovation, technological change, are now no longer located in individuals but in groups, networked groups whose membership ignores spatial restrictions (ie, international).
The new system rejects isolate economics as well, and operates by an integration in global economic networks. Both production of goods and services and consumption of goods and services, is more and more, globally networked.
Every systemic reality is always organized within two seemingly contradictory agendas: that of the collective which is focused on uniformity, stability, continuity. And that of the individual, which is focused on diversity, dissent, chance and innovation.
No system can afford to allow either agenda to move to authoritative domination; a robust system always teeters, as it were, in a borderline phase between the two. It must have both.
What is now being worked out is the location and role of each realm. Most certainly, the EU megagovernance is a dangerous system because its focus is only on the statist collective and the agenda of uniformity. Such a focus moves to one agenda- maximizing the power of that central authority.
An other statist collectivism also seeking power in the world is Islamism – very similar in type and agenda to the EU megagovernance.
Resistance to the gradual expansion of power of state collectivism will always exist. The state can try to reduce resistance by force, but this takes a great deal of energy and doesn’t last long. Ideological intrusion, instilling fear, a rejection of dissent, is far more successful. We find that not merely in Islamism, but in the doctrines of multiculturalism, political correctness – and we see it operating right now in Canada with the HRC and their rejection of individual freedom of thought and speech.
However, I’ll maintain that the other level, that of the individual, can’t be repressed that easily. That’s because it is, operationally, impossible for a society to last if its behaviour privileges one or the other too much (privileges either the collective or the individual). Both actions will bring the functions of the society to a screeching halt (stasis or randomness).
So- it is important that the individual continue to express rejection of the constant desire of the collective to smother the individual. Blogs are vital.
I would like to note that the ‘domestic terrorism hysteria’ began with 3000 murdered and 500 Billion in financial / property damage.
Or was it with the US Cole, 1999?
Or was it with the bombing of the WTC, 1993?
Or was it with any one of a THOUSAND other terrorist attacks over the past few decades?
Or maybe it continues because of the Fort Dix Six?
Or possibly because muslims such as the two men in New York City, keep trying to buy shoulder-launched rockets?
Or plan to set off a chain-reaction explosion in a pipeline running to a large airport?
Or planned to blow up at least a dozen planes over US cities, just last year?
Or could it be the Bombings in Spain?
England?
Bali?
Still only minimal MSM coverage of the landmark Levant kangaroo court appearance.
I’ve emailed Richard Cloutier (CJOB in Winnipeg, sort of equivalent to John Gormley in SK or Dave Rutherford in AB or, formerly, Rafe Mair in BC). I know he’ll get back to me–hopefully he’ll do a segment on it.
(mea culpa–sorry, Kate, this was the wrong thread–I should know better. Reposted in the reader tips thread.)
However, I’ll maintain that the other level, that of the individual, can’t be repressed that easily.
Not so sure about that, ET, if Russia is a template, going on 80 years of individual repression now, then, individual repression, often self-inflicted, can last a long time. Stalin to Putin, how stupid is that, and he’s good for as long as the oil money lasts.
EU megagovernance has occured without much resistance from the sheeple in Europe. You lose what you refuse to defend. It’s in the interest of socialism’s elite to make the populace as misinformed, marginally educated as possible and to control the debate via the media.
WL Mackenzie Redux – globalism is about open markets, a good thing. I’d much prefer having capitalistic private corporations moving services and wares across the globe unfettered then idiotic civil servants in the State Department controlling economic agendas.
We are at the beginning of some hard economic times here in the States, it happens in cycles. Even if the Dems win and do what they always do to worsen things – tax hikes, penalizing our best companies, subsidizing the stupid, we will survive it as we survived the follies of Jimmy Carter. Every few decades lessons need learned again for those that missed it the first time. Europe’s descent into totalitarian socialism won’t give them the resilience to change fast if they ever figure it out from under their burqas.
“You’re dead to me, boy!”
— Jon Voight in “Zoolander”
Canada will have to live with the shame of Trudeau, the inventor of multiculturalism, which means surrender. On the other hand, Muslims will be proud to live with Mohammad, the inventor of Islam, which means “Submit!”
( Of course, Islam is the only religion — SILENCE INFIDEL OR I KEEEELLLLL YOUUU !!!!!!
penny, I’m focusing on ‘la longue duree’ which is an historical perspective that focuses not on the short term (ie, 1-10 years) but on the long term, ie, generations.
I have a less depressed view of Europe than do you; I think it will pull itself out. The very fact that the French elected Sarkozy is a recognition that the socialist lifestyle isn’t tenable. The Europeans have moved themselves into a passivity, a possible result of WWII and that underlying communism/socialism of that war, and a long period of reconstruction that was in large part assisted by the US. They’ll have to confront this passivity at some time. My bet is that they will. The reason I’m betting on this is because they, intellectually, are still exploring and asking questions.
The interesting thing is that, in my own work, on informational networks and processes, the most innovative people are Europeans (non-French) and Americans (and Japanese). Not Canadians. And this seems to hold true for other disciplines as well. Canadians are stuck in the 1970s, embedded within the economic and defense protectionism of the USA and the small-town Canada perspective of the 1950s.
So, if I use just one variable as indicative of the intellectual strength of a society, its capacity for exploratory and innovative research, I’d say that Canadians are worse off than Europeans! What ‘saves’ us from our nature, is the fact that our economy and technological nature is embedded within the economy and technological innovativeness of the US.
“It is encouraging that Muslim voices are now being heard more and more speaking up against Islamic extremism. Their task is made infinitely more difficult, however, by western liberals determined to do the extremists’ work for them.”
This statement cuts to the chase for me.
“phew, wlmr – you sound like a Canadian version of Ron Paul.”
This is…not an accident…they share equally paranoid…views of global conspiracy, and the ellipses…are a dead give away. The ellipses also indicate that someone has spun into a comforting fantasy which grants a reassuring understanding of the world.
Where’s Charles Martel when we need him? Oh, boy!

“OUTCRY AS MUSLIM Marks & Spencer WORKER REFUSES TO SELL “UNCLEAN” BIBLE BOOK”
A MUSLIM store worker refused to serve a customer buying a children’s book on Christianity because she said it was “unclean”.
Shopper Sally Friday felt publicly humiliated at a branch of Marks & Spencer when she tried to pay for First Bible Stories as a gift for her young grandson.
When she put the book on the check-out counter, the young assistant refused to touch it, declared it was unclean and summoned another member of staff to serve instead.
Mrs Friday, from Old Basing, Hants, added: “I have given it careful thought and still feel humiliated that, because I am purchasing a children’s Bible story book, a cashier is able to object and refuse to put it through the till.

“Austrian politician faces two years in jail for insulting Islam”
Austrian politician faces 2 years in prison for insulting Islam
Sharia Alert from…Central Europe. It has come to this: Susanne Winter faces an investigation and possibly two years in prison for speaking negatively about Muhammad and Islam. I wonder if, regarding Muhammad’s marriage to a nine-year-old and its value as an example for Muslim men and Islamic jurists, truth and accuracy could be a defense. And I also wonder if she would be facing similar prosecution for insulting Jesus and Christianity. What do you think?
“Austrian authorities investigate Islam-bashing by rightist lawmaker,” from Deutsche Presse Agentur (thanks to Marked Manner):
Vienna – Remarks by a right-wing politician denouncing Islam and accusing the Prophet Mohammed of having been a paedophile provoked widespread outrage in Austria on Monday, with authorities investigating whether they constituted hate speech.
Susanne Winter, a candidate for the Freedom Party in local elections in Graz in south-eastern Austria, said on Sunday that Mohammed’s marriage to a 6-year-old girl would make the prophet a ‘paedophile in today’s system.’
Speaking at a rally, Winter demanded that Islam should be ‘thrown back where it came from, beyond the Mediterranean Sea.’
Winter later justified her attacks. ‘There is widespread child abuse by Muslim men,’ she was quoted as saying by the newspaper Oesterreich.
‘Why can’t I say this? That has nothing to do with hate speech. We want neither Austrian nor foreign paedophiles. I did not want to incite hatred, or offend a religious community,’ she said.
Austria’s authorities were investigating whether Winter’s remarks constituted incitement to hatred, a spokesman from the prosecutor’s office said. If found guilty, Winter could face up to two years in prison.
yes, irwin daisy, and the outcry against the clerk who refused to handle the book came from both the Muslim Council and the govt in the UK.
It is important to keep confronting the Islamic set of beliefs and behaviour; they are living in a 7th century ideology. This must be confronted and rejected, constantly. But, to simply stand back, reject them, insist that they ‘go back to the desert’ won’t solve the problem. They are here, our global planet is now intimately entwined, we can’t isolate them anywhere on the planet. We must however, acknowledge that their ideology is basically dysfunctional in a modern society.
We have to confront this ideology. Constantly. That’s why multiculturalism is disastrous, because it rejects evaluation. It ignorantly has decided that ALL sets of belief and behaviour are OK in the modern world. They aren’t. Therefore, we must confront, debate, discuss and reject any beliefs/behaviour which is not functional in a modern world.
The women in the Edmonton mosque who are openly declaring that the Muslim men are subjecting them to ‘hatred and contempt’ – ought to be supported in their fight by feminists and all Canadians. Instead, we have the complete silence of the feminist left. Complete silence.
Ezra Levant, in his fight for our fundamental right to think, to express thoughts – and thus, to enable debate, discussion, evaluation, judgment – ought to be supported by all Canadians. Instead, the MSM is largely utterly silent.
ET: The interesting thing is that, in my own work, on informational networks and processes, the most innovative people are Europeans (non-French)
======
As a quebecois of french descent, I find your comments offensive and hurtful… see u in the HRC court ET, The Extra Terrestrial.
quebecois separatiste
Ya, except for the fact that Quebec-french are about as far removed from Euro-french as an apple is from an orange.
Granted, they are still both fruits, but that is where the similarity ends.
As a side note, I had opportunity to speak to a Christian missionary posted to England. (Yes Canada is sending missionaries to England.) This missionary had an interesting way of describing what he observed. He said that many of the native born English are so into what some would call hedonism others might call it dissipation that there is not enough people to stand against what he referred to as the “areas of darkness”. As he went on to explain it was not the colour of the skin but there is a spiritual darkness that hangs over large portions of England and those areas of darkness seem to surround the local mosque.
VIVE LE MOBY DIQUE [head]!
hey, Moby Dique (quebecois seperatiste) can anyone be a “Qubecois” of non-French origin? Can you be a “Quebecois” of English origin (because you were born in Quebec) and not speak a word of Frog?
Ponder that one in your racist brain and try to give an answer.
Doug: you label me as a racist only because of my ID?
Is it the “Quebecois” or “separatiste” part that make you do so?
who is the real racist here?
“Sleepwalking into Enslavement”: a perfect title for the Melanie Phillips article. She’s one smart cookie and consistently “gets it”–which, of course, is why she’s treated as a leper.
If ever there was “the Emperor has no clothes” issue in the West, it’s the lie that there is no threat to our way of life from “the religion of peace,” and that to suggest such a thing is to be racist, reactionary, and wrong.
Abu Nudnik, in the commnents following the article makes a prescient statement: “Militancy when necessary is clearly a necessity…and its rejection by huge chunks of the West very much resemble the earlier quietistic Christianity so instrumental to the fall of Rome.”
I posit that today’s quietistic Christianity–and the general denial that Judeo-Christian values are the foundation stones of our democracies in the West and, therefore, must be defended most rigorously–will be instrumental in the fall of Western Civilization.
Thanks for the article, Kathy. ‘Very enlightening, and encouraging only in that Melanie Phillips’ view of things is very close to my own. I guess misery loves company!
Misery, in this case, is reality, as much as the ostriches amongst us (almost the whole flock/herd?) would like to hide from the facts.
i’ve said it before and i will say it again. we will and are having to fight our own in order to rid ourselves of the disease of islam.
Why does the left refuse to criticize Islam?
Simple.
They don’t want to criticize their allies.
