  4. Re Ezra….not one of my favourite people. But in this case, that was a wonderful opening statement……more details please, cant wait for the next installment.
    One hopes the commission, in this case and in the Macleans case, have overstepped their boundries and will be pinned back.
    In some ways I hope that the Ezra is convicted, if only to prompt the appeal to the Courts and the legislatures so they deal appropriately with this.
    As Ezra indicated, they were originally to keep the small stuff out of the “real legal system” by arbitrating housing etc disputes.
    How does one get appointed to one of these commissions? Can I get an appointment and be a voice of reason, as in “why are we hearing this case again”

  11. Did anyone else notice that there are five Senators going to Cuba ‘to study health care’. This eight-day ‘fact-finding’ trip is also being joined by 3 or 4 Senate researchers.
    The senators are Ottawa Senator Wilbert Keon (who says he will not bring a swimsuit because he will be too busy), former P.E.I. Liberal premier Catherine Callbeck, Quebec’s Lucie Pepin, Newf. and Labrador’s Joan Cook and Ottawa’s Jim Munson, a former communications director for Chretien.
    The trip was originally set for November, but was delayed when the House of Commons recessed.
    The preliminary budget for the Senators is $72,000.
    This was reported in Saturday’s (Montreal) Gazette on page A12.

  12. Heh. Did you hear Mr. McGuinty’s comments after the meeting with the PM last night? He was dissapointed that we fellow Canadian taxpayers would not be “partners” in propping up Ontario private businesses. If it was such a sound idea then why would not private enterprise invest instead of taxpayers. ????
    But, the real item I picked up was that McGuinty’s carefully crafted statement about “I came looking for a partner for the poor little working families blah blah and did not find that partner in this federal government tonight”….
    was a pre planned statement as it was being issued by his communications office BEFORE he made it in the scrums after the meeting!!!!
    So, no matter what happened at the meeting or what the Prime MInister did or did not do good old Liberal McGuinty had already devised his talking points.
    Just like Dion being against the budget before he sees it.

    Minister Day’s comments re the Singh non-deportation. Sanctity has no place in Canadian Law.
    He opines that the two failed attempts at deportation does not make the Border Agency look weak.
    Well Minister, it makes both the Border Agency and all of their masters, particularly at the upper levels, look just that. It would be highly unfair to tag a few agents who were sent to the scenes (the airport and the Gurdwara) to do the job. Surely, what actually happened could have been foreseen (particularly the 2nd time) and measures taken.
    He laments that those in the “community” failed to keep their word in terms of acquiescing to deportation if certain conditions were met (which they apparently were).
    Well, Minister, the “community” did much worse than fail to keep their word. They in fact obstructed justice (not once but twice) and in the worst possible way – by mob-swarming with the intent to intimidate/prevent a legal action being carried out.
    So…. the ball is again in your court – only now, because of past non-performance, it is going to be a whole lot more difficult to hit it out of the park. The high speed breaking ball(or is it really a sucker/knuckle ball)is on its way.
    Not an enviable place for a decision-maker to be, but either we have the rule of law in Canada or we don’t.

    Two huge outside broadcast vans belonging to the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation were seized after a tip-off from intelligence agents.
    As a result, UBC was unable to transmit live pictures of key summit events, including the Queen’s historic address to the Ugandan parliament on November 22.
    Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, the Uganda Minister of Internal Affairs, said: “We received information that a terrorist group linked to Al Qaeda, the Allied Democratic Forces, was planning to carry out terrorist activities at the Commonwealth meeting. The security services in Uganda neutralised these threats.”
    He refused to comment on the precise nature of the planned attacks or reports that Ugandan armed forces had seized a speedboat loaded with arms and homemade bombs.
    A number of suspected ADF guerrillas aboard the boat on Lake Victoria are understood to have been taken into custody.”

    Poverty in Toronto is a major problem says the Toronto Star…daily. Toronto has the third largest number of social housing units in all of North America. And it’s still not enough because they want to build more.
    I’m sure Toronto, per capita, is really number 1.
