Where the foxes caper unmolested, the government packs your school lunch and all heed the call to prayer;
The deeply English, deeply Christian city of Oxford, one of the homes of free thought, is now being asked to accept the Islamic call to prayer wafting from mosque loudspeakers over its spires and domes.
If that is not a threat to our “way of life”, then I don’t know what is. Allowing the regular electronic proclamation of Allah’s supremacy in a British city is not tolerance, but a surrender of the sky to a wholly different culture. Just you wait and see what opponents of this scheme are accused of.

Okay–so who is legislating this idiocy? Don’t blame the Muslims, blame the vote seeking idiots that seem to be ‘in charge’. We may want to keep our morals and values, but our governments have no such committment.
Reading news from England these days I never know whether to cry or to laugh. Well, I’ve never their big fan to begin with, but it’s still sad to see entire civilization going down the drain.
All this because they didn’t have the metallurgy to make bells.
I’ll be very surprised if there isn’t an upswing in muggings of Muslims should this be done. Joe Sixpack isn’t going to be all high minded and tolerant, and while there are no doubt many Muslims in the city, Joe Sixpack outnumbers them by a healthy margin.
Because as I’ve heard said right here at SDA many times, you don’t find racism in the corner office. You find it at the corner pub in the crappy parts of town where Joe lives.
Perhaps to stop the meuzzin they’d have to silence the church bells. You know like how we ended Jewish arbitration in order to be “fair” in denying sharia law in Ontario.
Silencing the chruch bells is one of the many requirements of the dhimma pact — replaced with clappers.
In Bethlehem where the Christian pop. has dropped from 15% to 1.5% since the PA took over in 1993, they use tape recordings of bells in the church — volume down low! Or maybe it was Gaza. Forget now.
Observation: Consider the power of the cultural prong of the global jihad when a tiny 3% of the population can have this kind of impact, and in such a culturally important city.
Yes George you are correct. Their government and officials march to their own tune and many British feel more than a little frustrated. Those who can continue to move elsewhere outside Europe and the UK.
Dont they have watches?
I forgot they are all being used as timers.
From the British blogs and newspaper comment sections I’ve read – blowback is coming. I don’t think socialists understand the end results of their actions will not likely be a utopian love-in.
Yea — they did the same thing in a town north of Detroit by the name of Hamtramic (fitting name eh). Yep, they get to spew it loud and clear, I think 4 times a day. The ex-Polish (and Christian) and newly populated muslim town made it law after a number of law suits. The residents were told to be tolerant. I think most, if not all, polish people moved out.
My hope is that the Fabian socialists have been moving at too rapid a velocity, and the blowback that Irwin Daisy and the “Ghost Who Walks” talk about will happen.
As we have learned in the US it is a problem for each of our countries when an ally caves to liberal government.
Before Harper was elected, Liberals would often hammer us using Canada’s criticisms of the US to bludgeon us.
It’s going to be bad news for all of us if Britain doesn’t reverse course.
When I first started to post here about a year after Kate started SDA, I was embarrassingly naive about Canada. Canadians were raking us over the coals, and I wanted to give them the middle finger and also try to re-encourage the friendly, familiar relationship that we used to have.
Back in those days I vaguely thought that the Canadian system, which I sort of thought to be the best of Britain and America rolled up into a more civilized way of doing things, might offer very charming possibilities.
I’m afraid I’ve been disabused of those notions. Now I’ve come to think that American’s revolutionary founding serves as a backdrop to some extent against the aggressive grasp of power by government.
We are wrestling with our own problems, as everyone here knows. (It’s beginning to look like the presidential race is less about the right and left, and more about a president of the center.) Still, we have our guns, and we have the echo of our revolutionary zeal, and we have a lot of institutions and voices for the right. And I realize that this is more than most countries have.
Britain, please reverse your course as a responsibility to us all. “Don’t go quietly into that dark night. Rage, rage, against the dying of the light…”
What’s wrong with a little fairness?
I enjoy the church bells I hear daily in my neighborhood, even though I am not religious.
I propose,in the spirit of fairness, that over a citywide loudspeaker system we also repeat twice daily the mantra “there is no afterlife”.
Although,I’m not sure yet what the Jews or Bhuddists would consider as fair airtime.
The Islamic Republik of Britain!
Hm. MY religion requires me to call the faithful to prayer by playing AC/DC at full volume over my loudspeakers 24/7. Wonder if I’ll get the same consideration?
Greg, thanks for the vote of confidence there. But “unsurprised” in this case doesn’t mean “happy”, for me anyway.
I think some serious backlash is brewing up in England over this, it would have to be. I mean, leaving aside the white people does anybody think the Yardies are going to be happy? I guarantee the Sikhs will start carrying the sharp kirpan instead of the dull one. All rednecks ain’t white, know what I mean?
I’m all in favor of payback, I just like those who do the giving to do the receiving. The problem with backlash is the ones who deserve it won’t be the ones who get it. Nobody comes out ahead.
Well, nobody except the race baiting politicians and the camera manufacturers. Those guys are going to strike the mother lode.
The good news is that good Canadians will never again have to cross the Atlantic to save their sorry asses from the Huns or the Russians or whomever because they won’t bother to fight in the first place.
North America should arm itself to the teeth, say screw the rest of the world and follow the old Roman doctrine of peace through being prepared for war – Si vis pacem, para bellum.
Then just let Europe go muslim and the rest of the world go to hell in a handbasket.
We can start by kicking the UN out of NYC and have it set new HQ in Lagos or some other 3rd world hell hole.

The islamist argument. We want the fairness and tolerance that you wesserners talk of; except they don’t want it for others. It’s central to their totalitarian ideology. And just why do they move to the West in the first place if not to escape teh teffects of that totalitarian ideology?
If Gordon Brown’s ineptness doesn’t kill the Labour party, then, the UK deserves to go down with him. They are going to have the EU Treaty pushed down their throats without a referendum. After last June’s terrorist attacks Brown’s muddled response was to refuse to name the obvious suspects as what they represented and he quickly made public utterances about poverty breeding terrorism. He has expressed a desire and may actually be negotiating with the Taliban now. What part of post-9/11 does this idiot not understand.
To all of the rabid Bush haters in Britain, you’ve got the anti-Bush now and what’s it going to get you? Could it be that two badassed Muslim countries under American occupation since 9/11 has your basic jihadi understanding not to jerk Bush and armed Americans around with terrorist street theater like they’ve done to you?
From what I’ve read the Tories are almost as stupid and inept. Cameron has proposed some stupid Nanny State garbage in trying to win voters rather than offering a decisive policy choice. The present Tories are spineless wimps like Blair with a better foreign policy.
If things are finally starting to fester with the Brits, I don’t envy them their pathetic choices. I don’t envy them that it will take years to dismantle the rot and they will need to leave the EU if they want to protect their culture for their children. I’m not holding my breath that they’ll take the risks.
I for one don’t want to hear some weird-beard screeching out something that says in effect that there is no god but his god and that a child molester is his prophet. they can pretty much believe what ever fairy tale they like,I don’t want to listen to it 5 times a day I realize that the custom dates back to a time when we all lived in villages without clocks, running water or schools and hospitals….. wait a minute isn’t that the middle east today. buy a watch a**hat
In refering to the great battle of Tours 732 AD, Edward Gibbon, a Victorian and prolific history teacher made this statement. This should the Frankish and Teutonic knights have failed against Islam, instead of being the victors.
” Perhaps the interpretation of the Koran would now be taught in the schools of Oxford. And her pulpits might demonstrate to a circumsised people the sanctity and truth of ….. Mohomet”.
One senses a sort of regret by Edward Gibbon. As for me, I would go with Sir Edward Creasy and his account of one of the fifteen decisive battles of the world. This at Tours.
There is almost no such thing as a conservative of any note in England, sadly.
I think, as some of the comments here mention, that the English, at the local level, will stand up and fight for their rights.
I read the entire article, and this Peter Hitchens guy comes across as an alarmist old style British snob. In particular, his stupid comment about the IRA.
Where the foxes caper unmolested, the government packs your school lunch and…
decides if you’re behaving well enough to deserve medical treatment.
I don’t think so, but do people really think people become more tolerant of noise with age. I can’t imagine those loud speakers blasting a foreign language through the airways would last a hour. Some old man will shoot out those speakers, if not, an old lady will for sure. I thought there were laws against noise pollution.
As for Blair, he threw away Britain’s sovereignty to Germany without allowing the Brits to vote on it….he bloody well deserves to be a Roman Catholic – makes good sense considering the Germans and the Catholics have long been blood brothers; too bad King Henry isn’t around to put Blair’s head in a bucket.
At some point, some bright young lad is going to remember that , if a mosque is defiled by pork it has to be abandoned; and someone is going to toss a pig’s bloody head through the front door some fine night.
The asshat islamonazis might want to take a little friendlier look at community relations if they want to survive much longer.
I can’t believe that the English people, as a whole, are ready to roll over and return to the 7th century.
Solaratov, does it count if the pig is still alive and you just run it through the place a few times? Maybe let it take a dump on the carpet?
Be a shame to waste a perfectly good pig just to get their attention.
I love it. Keep pushing … push harder.
“…this Peter Hitchens guy comes across as an alarmist old style British snob.”
Peter is the mirror image of his more well-known (outside the UK) brother Christopher: Christopher is a pro-American atheistic socialist while Peter is a paleocon crypto-Catholic Little Englander in the mold of Enoch Powell.
Does Englands public discourse, at least that which constitutes the Conservative side, not involve the opinions of Margaret Thatcher? She is still alive isn’t she?
We like to imagine what true leaders of the past would pronounce on the events of today, ie. Ronald Reagan, Winston Churchill, …Charles Martel, yet we have one of the West’s most successful and principled leaders and…?
One answer would be to allow the call to prayer to come from an unamplified human voice. I enjoy the muezzin’s call on a quiet morning.
“One answer would be to allow the call to prayer to come from an unamplified human voice. I enjoy the muezzin’s call on a quiet morning.”
You know, that’s actually quite a good idea. The only real alternatives are (1) to ban church bells as well on grounds of religious neutrality or (2) allowing certain aggressive islamists to blast their call to prayer at heavy-metal-rock volumes.
I know some of you would like to see a kind of Crusader state that suppresses Islam and champions Christianity, but despite being a fan of the Crusades I have to say that’s a fantasy that you shouldn’t waste your time on.
P. Hitchens tends to come across as someone who knows he’s on the losing side of history – which is too bad, ‘cos I agree with him on most things. But the scent of loserdom is there.
Don’t place your hopes on grassroots revolt, by the way. Guys like P. Hitchens have been doing that for the last 200 year, but the fix is in, and progressive Moloch is perfectly content with a 3-steps-forward, 2-steps-back approach.
Little Englander in the mold of Enoch Powell
WHO GOT IT EXACTLY RIGHT.
