Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Some days ago I mentioned here Prof. Hans Rosling’s talk from TED 2006. Since then I’ve sent it to my mailing list and discussed it via email with a few readers and commenters here at SDA. The response has been larger than usual, and it has unanimously been: Wow.
So, though multiple comments recommending the same link are something I try to eschew, in this case I do urge you to watch Hans’s twenty-minute presentation on the ways the global quality of life have been improving for the last fifty years. Not only will, I’ll bet, the data surprise you, the graphical display of complex data will blow you away. Just ask Edward Tufte.

Talk about the simple servants invading everything. The other day we went out for a relaxing day boating, not so. All we did all day was listen to two RCMP yahoo’s turn their siren on every ten minutes. Now that we have Sidney spit as part of the National parks we also have a great influx of simple servants of every variety doing their part to keep us safe from ourselves. I can stay home and listen to goddamn sirens night and day, I go out on the water to get away from that. Anybody else coming or going from Sidney to Pender Island get stopped? One thing I did notice, was that several sailboats went by and not one was stopped, I wonder why? In the last 15 years I may have been stopped 3 times, the last 3 outings I have been stopped. Canadians in the province of Ontario have learned that their government handed out $32.5 million of their tax dollars during the 2006-2007 fiscal year, in a manner that was “not open, transparent, or accountable.” According to a damning report from the province’s auditor-general, James McCarter, the money was given in grants through the province’s Immigration and Citizenship Ministry, to various cultural, religious and ethnic groups who would be likely to support Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty in the upcoming (October) provincial election.

Pennsylvania County Considers Floating Global Warming Bonds
If you had any questions concerning the future financial potential of selling global warming alarmism, an idea being researched by a Pennsylvania county will provide all the answers you need.
As reported by The Intelligencer Saturday (emphasis added throughout):
Montgomery County officials are looking into whether a bond can be issued to pay for greenhouse gas reduction projects as part of a larger strategy to fight global warming.
Picture becoming clearer? If counties can borrow money to fund green projects, mightn’t the media and the left start pushing state and federal governments to do the same thing?
Just imagine the possibilities:
Although local governments regularly float bonds to pay for large long-term projects, it’s not clear if cutting global climate change fits into a pre-existing category.
“The county can only do what the Legislature said it can do in writing. … We just can’t willy-nilly do whatever we want,” Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairman Tom Ellis said at Thursday’s meeting.

Brookings: IRAQ INDEX [Civilian fatalities down significantly] in Post-Saddam Iraq
Iraq at the End of July
After a trip of 8 days one of us (O’Hanlon) took to Iraq this July, revisions are needed in some key numbers in the Iraq Index. This is in part because fresh data have recently become available, and in part because the U.S. military and Bush administration have not done a sufficient job getting data into the American public debate. It required a trip to Iraq to get access to some information that really should be widely available on this side of the Atlantic.
A more thorough accounting will follow in the coming days, but in short, civilian fatality levels in Iraq now seem to have declined substantially more than previous Pentagon reports or data had indicated. In particular, the monthly civilian fatality rate from sectarian violence appears about one-third lower than in the pre-surge months. That is still far too high, and remains comparable to violence levels of the 2004-2005 period, but it nonetheless reflects progress….-

Lawrence Solomon explains how the biggest fraud the world has ever seen may just be a case of someone ‘jumping to conclusions’.
[For being “the grandfather of the greenhouse effect,” as he put it, he was awarded the National Medal of Science by the first President Bush.
Roger Revelle’s most consequential act, however, may have come in his role as a teacher, during the 1960s at Harvard. Dr. Revelle inspired a young student named Al Gore.]LS
Al Gore thought the world of Roger Revelle. (When it suited his agenda, that is.)
[Calling him “a wonderful, visionary professor” who was “one of the first people in the academic community to sound the alarm on global warming,” Gore thought of Dr. Revelle as his mentor and referred to him frequently, relaying his experiences as a student in his book Earth in the Balance, published in 1992.]LS
But then;
[Gore’s warmth for Dr. Revelle cooled, however, when it became clear that he had misunderstood his former professor: Although Dr. Revelle recognized potential harm from global warming, he also saw potential benefits and was by no means alarmed, as seen in this 1984 interview in Omni magazine.]LS
Did Gore “misunderstand” or did he just want to believe what he wanted to believe ?? First step to becoming a fanatic ?
[While Gore in the late 1980s was becoming a prominent politician, loudly warning of global warming dangers, Dr. Revelle was quietly warning against taking any drastic action.]LS
But now Gore would not listen to his mentor. It was no longer about the science —- it was a religion.
In 1991 Dr. Revelle died of a heart attack. It was Al Gore’s big break. His former mentor was now out of the way — could no longer counter Gore’s alarmism.
[One year later, with Al Gore running for vice-president in the 1992 presidential election, the inconsistency between Gore’s pronouncements — he claimed that the “science was settled” then, too — and those of his mentor became national news. Gore responded with a withering attack, leading to claims that Dr. Revelle had become senile before his death, that Dr. Singer had duped Dr. Revelle into co-authoring the article, and that Dr. Singer had listed Dr. Revelle as a co-author over his objections.]LS
Fanatics have no scruples. But this one had to admit he was fraudulent back then.
[The sordid accusations ended in a defamation suit and an abject public apology in 1994 from Gore’s academic hit man, a prominent Harvard scientist, who revealed his unsavory role and that of Gore in the fabrications against Dr. Singer and Dr. Revelle.]LS
Is another admission of fraud coming soon ?

The Brookings Report on Iraq (at August 5, 2007 8:07 PM)
The Brookings Institution Iraq Index for July 30, 2007 contains an update of the indicators measured since 2003. […]
It is the ethnic conflict which makes the American presence in Iraq, while unwelcome, seem a necessary evil. By themselves the US might not be very popular with the Sunnis. But for keeping al-Qaeda killers and Shi’ite death squads away they very useful indeed.
Counterintuitively the majority of the Iraqis polled do not want to go their own separate ways but hold out hope for a single unitary or federated country. This is hardly what one would have expected to find in a country supposedly wracked by civil war? How can this persistent desire for some sort of political cooperation among ethnic communities which supposedly hate each other be explained?
There are two probably reasons for this desire for unity. The first is that Iraq is potentially rich and nobody wants to deal himself out of a rich country; and the second is that compared to Iraq’s neighbors it is comparatively free. For all the problems that followed the removal of Saddam many people remember what a despot he was. First to the rich part. …-
