    My point is, you’re flying over the moon at 21,000 feet traveling 1,200 feet per second, you’ve had some system failure alarms, and you say to mission control: “let me try auto again now and see what happens”. Now that’s courage.

  7. Just for those who might be wondering, the good old bicycle is the most efficient form of transport for a single person known to man. According to wikipedia, a cyclist gets the equivalent of 653 mpg, in terms of distance travelled for energy expended. And in grid-locked Richmond Hill, where every stop light seems timed to turn red just as you approach it, I’d wager that cars don’t get anywhere near their advertised mpg. I know that before I got rid of my car, I was only driving 20 km a week around Richmond Hill, but I had to put $15 a week in gas into the car.
    I know that farmers in rural Sask or Ab don’t really have much choice – bikes are not going to work for them. But if the 80% of Canadians who live in urban areas used bikes for half their trips under 2 miles, we would not only pollute less, but we’d also improve our collective health and reduce the strain on our medical system, which might also help keep a lid on taxes.
    Cars aren’t going away, and when we bundle the family (all five of us) into the van, our mileage on a per person basis can reach close to 100 mpg. So, I’m not trying to say cars are evil, just that bikes are a surprisingly efficient alternative for a large number of Canadians.

  8. Wait a second, humans on bicyles get 653 miles per gallon? Per gallon of what? I certainly get more miles per gallon of beer than I do per gallon of water, if only because beer has calories — you know, human fuel. I mean, I can only speak for myself, but when I’m riding a bicycle I don’t get many miles per gallon of, say, uranium, or bitumen, or sunlight.
    These variables are important, because as a famous Scottish engineer once noted, no matter how rich you are, you can only drink about 16 or 17 liters of beer per day.

  19. How about that, Jack Layton wants Black stripped of his Order of Canada, never mind his case isn’t even appealed yet. This is the same Bozo who gets all worried about the Taliban detainees and how they are treated.
    No doubt the detainees will serve less time under less stress than Conrad Black may end up serving, 35 years at his age is more than his life. This is the worst example of injustice perpetrated on a person with no regard to reasonable doubt in memory, that is in one of the world’s Democracies.
    It’s the cruelty of the Left in all it’s glory in it’s extreme hatred for those who are successful and provide tax money to keep our economies churning.

  22. Toronto cyclists are the stupidest and most self-righteous bunch around. I frequently witness their games of chicken with multi-ton vehicles – they seem oblivious to the danger they put themselves in.
    Yesterday I came across an accident after the fact. A woman cyclist evidently came in contact with a Brinks truck(!) on Bloor, and amazingly lived to tell about it.
    Those Brinks trucks really don’t get up much speed, so I have no doubt that she did something stupid to bring herself in contact with it.
    A Smartcar is one thing, but a Brinks truck? Yikes!

    Too many bikers in Toronto don’t observe any rules of the road; they swing from being “pedestrians” (riding their bikes across pedestrian crosswalks all the time) to being “vehicles” when they darned well feel like it. They ride on sidewalks, weave in and out of traffic, don’t use signals, and give you the finger if you so much as look sideways at them.
    For the most part, they’re a bunch of crassly inconsiderate Cretins, a group I don’t particularly want to be associated with.
    The curmudgeon in me notes, happily, that most bike riders in TO have stopped wearing helmets, which means that when some inconsiderate or inattentive driver opens a door and, Marx-Brothers-like, the rider goes flying up onto the car’s hood or onto the sidewalk, we may be closer to a bikeless metropolis, one biker at a time.
    God forgive me for that thought…

  28. Robins in our area in southern Ontario stop their early morning singing around mid-July.
    Regular as clockwork.
    Two weeks ago one could hear them singing by 4 am.
    Now robin silence, only mourning doves, goldfinches, songsparrows, sparrows and cardinals and house finches are heard.
    From now on their ( robins) chirping can be heard only occasionally or short times before a rain shower.
    I am curious if this time frame is peculiar only
    to southern Ontario or is it common across the whole country.
    Anybody?

    In the spirit of the times, let’s do a carbon calculation!
    Now, your normal human is a 100-W bulb (NDP/Greens are dim bulbs – only 40 W), that’s about 2000 Calories per day, or 8.368 megaJoules per day. During the process, 0.85 kg of CO2 are produced (except for the environuts, who don’t exhale). A quick look at the periodic table (to convert from CO2 to carbon) gives 36 kiloJoules per gram-carbon (kJ/gC).
    Now, a US gallon of gas has 130 megaJ per gallon and produces 8.9 kg of CO2 when burned, or 54 kJ/gC.
    Gotta suggest a conclusion: If 2 gallons of gas can perform more work than 3 people, then you burn the gas and shoot the people?

    The city i live in socialist have succeeded getting elected to council, Last year they decided that special group flags had to come before council to request permission to be flown at city hall along side the Maple leaf, Provincial & city. They refused the Red Cross week flag & Legion week flags just to name a couple of very reconizable organizations. Then all of a sudden the Gay Pride flag is quietly given permission to fly, that was it every charity group, concerned citizens voiced outrage, the gay flag is flown but they would not fly the red cross week flag, legion week flag, the list went on & on. The council chambers was full to capacity, what was the decision council came up with No Flags of Special interest groups will be flown at city hall, The gay pride councilers were now outraged, then all of a sudden from the back of the hall a yell, we will see who is ticked off come election time. This guy put his name in the hat & went full barrel after the 1 main vocal supporters of the gay pride flag he defeated him, the other 2 barely won But are keeping their mouths shut this term.
