Pet food was okayed despite misgivings
OTTAWA — Despite serious misgivings about the credibility of China’s veterinary system, Ottawa gave approval earlier this year to allow a Canadian company import “gourmet” pet food from two Chinese plants that produce food only for human consumption.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, while reserving judgment on China’s overall system for approving the slaughter and sale of animals, concluded after inspections last fall that the two plants met Canadian standards, a CFIA official said this week. …- (vancouver sun)…-

Egypt Arrests 59 Muslims After Clash with Copts
    Reuters ^ | 5/12/07
CAIRO (Reuters) -Egyptian security forces arrested 59 Muslims on Saturday accused of setting fire to Christian homes and shops in clashes over church construction that underlined lingering sectarian tensions, security sources said. They said prosecutors ordered the arrests after taking the testimony of 10 Coptic Christians who were hurt in the clashes on Friday in the village of Behma, about 60 km (40 miles) south of Cairo, in which hundreds of people from both faiths fought with sticks and hurled bricks and firebombs at one another. The 59 Muslims were charged with arson and with spreading sectarian strife. Security sources…-

Disgruntled Tories consider refounding Reform Party
    GLORIA GALLOWAY
    Globe and Mail Update
    May 11, 2007 at 8:52 PM EDT
Ottawa — Somewhere in Kingston Saturday, a small group of disaffected Conservatives will meet to discuss what would have been unfathomable in the heady days that followed the last federal election: refounding the Reform Party.
    (…)
“It’s now or never,” the online invitation says. “This new party will never be infiltrated by Red Tories, special interest groups or Quebec again.”
In another part of the country, Link Byfield is writing columns for his Citizens Centre for Freedom and Democracy that criticize the policies of the federal Conservatives.
“Has Stephen Harper been ‘Otta-washed?’” Mr. Byfield, a strong voice for small-c conservative Alberta, wrote on April 5.
    (…)
Connie Wilkins of Kingston, who owns freedominion.ca, one of the most popular conservative websites in Canada, has been invited to the weekend meeting.
At this point, she says, reforming Reform is just a discussion.
    (…)
But it’s not just socially conservative issues that upset the old Reformers, Ms. Wilkins said. “It’s the fiscally liberal things that they have been doing lately that people have really started to get upset about.”
The fury began with the luring of David Emerson from the Liberals to sit as a Conservative cabinet minister, and the naming of Conservative organizer Michael Fortier as unelected senator and Public Works Minister.
Then came a vote to declare Quebeckers a nation, the budget, a settlement with Maher Arar that many found egregious, a reversal on income trusts, and a complete about-face on the environment.
A Conservative policy convention scheduled for November – an opportunity for expression of the dissatisfaction – has been cancelled.
“It’s not a huge issue in and of itself,” Ms. Wilkins said. “But because it’s piled on to so many other things, it’s just one more indication to a lot of people that we’ve lost our grassroots feelings and that it doesn’t really matter what the membership says.”

  4. With the new book on Stephane Dion just published ,written by a Toronto Star editor Linda Diebel (so, gag, it will be totally unbiased NOT) I had some ideas of who I would interview about Dion if one were looking for honest insight and balance.
And, even the same types of people that were hounded by reporters for insights into Stephen Harper.
    1. School friends. Any old girlfriends? What about the rumour that Dion did not date girls at all and that his wife Jane did not date any boys and that these two academics then got together as a couple for politically correct appearances and so they could adopt a child?
A little bit like Bill Graham and maybe a lot like Joe Clark who suffered a whisper campaign until the arranged marriage.
Or are these types of insights still too politically incorrect?
    2. His students. What kind of teacher was he? Diebel says that he was so “apolitical” for a while that he forbid his students studying political science to discuss politics????
    3. His professors in France. Is it true that Dion was enamored by Karl Marx and did his university thesis on Marxism?
Is that thesis available to see where his thought processes were taking him?
    4. That old fellow who was his neighbour when Dion said he liked to go visit the rabbits except this old fellow says none of that was true. So, what is the turth?
    5. Was Dion’s riding one of the 10 in Quebec that the AdScammers admitted giving campaign funds to in brown envelopes? That would be important to know. Any interviews with his campaign workers?
That would be a good start for questions and insights into the guy who wants to lead OUR country.
I am sure you all have many more questions and sources quite different from the ones Liberal cheerleader /whitewasher Linda Diebel would have used to write her puffy rah rah book on Dion.
Does anybody out there have any insights into other sources a REAL investigative reporter should follow up on?

  5. It’s time to bring the issue of inflated and abused MP expense accounts back into the public consciousness. The Ottawa Citizen broke a story about a Liberal MP using his meal allowance to pay off the mortgage on a home he bought before ever being elected. Unfortunately, it was swept under the rug by some idiots who urinated on the National War Memorial on the same day.
I’ve posted some things at my blog. It’d be great if we could get a blogburst going.

  6. I like that Mark Styne risks looking forward and makes hard predictions.
Predictions I agree with. Predictions we all aught to take seriously and make dreamy liberals aware of.
You don*t even have to buy the book. Just this promo is enough to get the point across.
    ** Dear Fellow Conservative:
Someday soon, you might wake up to the call to prayer from a Muslim muezzin. Millions of Europeans already do.
And liberals will still tell you that **diversity is our strength** — while Talibanic enforcers cruise our cities burning books and barber shops… the Supreme Court decides sharia law doesn’t violate the *separation of church and state* … and the Hollywood Left gives up gay rights in favor of the much safer charms of polygamy.
If you think this can’t happen, you haven’t been paying attention, as the hilarious and brilliant Mark Steyn — the most popular conservative columnist in the English-speaking world — shows to devastating effect in his New York Times bestseller, America Alone: The End of the World As We Know It.

Well think again. If his vehicle never stops at the gas pump, he makes a decent income.

  9. @WLM Redux: Ugh, that annoys me. When the Liberals are in power, the west votes Conservative. When the Conservatives are in power, the west forms a new party.

  10. Not surprising there are rumblings within the New Gov’t of Canada from the Western base. It really was only a matter of time. Most all of the power positions are now either Easterners and/or bilinguals (about 20% of Canada’s population) and it is becoming increasingly more so. Compare the amount of French on CPAC vs English. Look at the current cabinet ministers.
The CPC has quickly and obviously become the party of central Canada and all the indications are that it will continue in this direction – simply not enough power to bring about change in all institutions federal. There are many significant changes that the West wants but even many of the existing Mulroneyites will not support – like forcing Official Bilingualism/Multiculturalism on QC as it has been foisted on the ROC.
I hope that few, if any, of Harper and/or his western base don’t all of a sudden think that they will be welcome back into provincial politics. Collectively they have pretty much sold out Western Canada beginning with allowing Law S-3 to come into effect without so much as a whimper as it was going through the houses and into law.
It was their choice at the time to go this route. Manning made the mistake of thinking he could form a federal government. Harper and his crew were non-believers – oh yes, they said – it can be done and we will do it – even if we have to refute many of our sound ideological principles – and they did. They have unabashedly pandered for votes in ways that are little different from what the Liberals did for decades. They can’t give much more to QC/ethnic votes than they already have and really – where has it got them?
If somehow the federal Western base folds any more than it already has – there will simply be no alternative than for each province to focus on a “province first basis” and forcefully demand/impose their own places in what will be a very divided Canada. QC has done it for years – now it is time for the rest of us.
The Alberta Party has its roots in the old Reform Party and has an existing charter to field candidates. Time to dust off the cobwebs and make this party a viable alternative to Steady (some are now using the moniker unsteady) Eddie in the next provincial election.
There is a good chance that the provincial liberals make make very big gains in the next provincial election – and wouldn’t the centrists love to see this happen.
We simply cannot allow this to happen.

Dozens of Taliban killed in Afghan south
KABUL (Reuters) – Western and Afghan troops have driven the Taliban from a southern area after a week-long battle in which more than 70 militants were killed, an Afghan security official said on Saturday.
Violence has surged in Afghanistan in recent months after the traditional winter lull and an upsurge of fighting last year, the bloodiest since the Taliban’s removal in 2001.
In the latest incident on Saturday, a roadside bomb killed at least eight Afghan police outside the southern city of Kandahar, provincial police chief, Esmatullah Alizai said.
There were no casualties among Afghan and Western troops in the fighting in Nahri Saraj of neighbouring Helmand province, scene of a series of operations by foreign-led forces in recent weeks, the security official said.
Five Taliban commanders were amongst those killed, the official said, adding there were no casualties among civilians.
“We have driven out the Taliban from the district and it is under our control,” he said. …-

  15. Police charge pair in connection with drive-by paintball shooting
    By Fred Sherwin
    Orléans Online
The Ottawa police have charged a 20-year-old male and a 17-year-old female in connection with Monday night’s drive-by paintball shooting that left a 21-year-old Orléans woman potentially blind in one eye.
According to single paragraph press release issued late Thursday night, the 20-year-old male was driving the vehicle at the time of the incident which took place at the corner of Orléans Blvd. and Lumberman Way, while the 17-year-old female fired the paintball gun. The pair, who cannot be identified under the Young Offenders Act, have been charged with aggravated assault and numerous weapons offences.
While the press release makes no reference to the possibility of other suspects, or whether or not the investigation is still ongoing, the victim’s mother is convinced there were more than two people in the car and that the shooter was not a male.
“There’s no way she did it. It’s B.S. My daughter and her friend both saw the the people in the car and there were more than two people in it and the person with the gun was definitely a male,” says Jan Roos who had just found out earlier in the day that her daughter Ashley will have to undergo several surgeries and that there is only a 60 per cent chance she will regain the vision in her injured eye.
Roos is convinced the 17-year-old girl who police claim was the shooter, is taking the fall for someone else.
“She’s covering for the guy who did it because they know she’ll only get a slap on the wrist,” says Roos who was told the female suspect has no previous record.
Ross also said that the police have yet to formerly interview either her daughter or her daughter’s friend, or show them pictures of the two suspects facing charges.
“It’s wrong. It’s all wrong. It doesn’t add up. If there were only two people why was the girl sitting in the back seat? Wouldn’t she be sitting in the front seat,” says Roos. “My daughter and her friend know what they saw. Before she was shot in the eye, (the people in the car) threw an egg at them which drew their attention to the car. They were only a few feet away and it’s pretty bright at that corner.”
Roos is hoping to get some answers from the investigators working the case. Despite leaving several messages over the past two days, she has yet to hear back from them.

  16. US Gas Prices Hit Record
    MoneyNews
    Tuesday, May 8, 2007
Gasoline prices have surged to a record nationwide average of $3.07 per gallon, nearly 20 cents higher than two weeks earlier, oil industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday. The previous record was $3.03 per gallon on Aug. 11, 2006.
But despite inventory fears that have sent prices higher, there are signs that the rising prices at the pump may be peaking.
Just two weeks ago, the U.S. average for a gallon of regular gas was $2.87, but the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 stations nationwide on Friday showed an increase of about 19.5 cents to $3.07. That’s up 88.4 cents since Jan. 19, Lundberg said.

    Coyne: Seeking a grand bargain
Scenes from a dying country ?
The government of Newfoundland, in language recalling Quebec’s Quiet Revolution, uses its recent Throne Speech to signal its determination to be “masters in our own house.” This calculated appeal to Newfoundland nationalism is prompted by reforms to equalization that offer the province more than it received before.
In Quebec, the nominally “federalist” premier Jean Charest laces his “inaugural” speech with even more stridently nationalist language, in an apparent bid to outdo the “autonomist” Action democratique and the “separatist” Parti Quebecois. This, after his government demanded, and was granted, a whole series of further concessions from Ottawa: formal recognition of the Quebecois “nation,” a seat at UNESCO, and so on, plus billions of dollars in additional transfer payments. […]
The whole point of federating was to avoid this sort of nonsense: to create a single national economic space, without barriers of any kind.
It was never intended [bs!] that, 140 years later, the provinces would still be carving up the country into preferential trade areas. Rather, the Fathers of Confederation envisaged a common market, with a federal overseer. […]

I don’t understand this post of yours. You basically repeat the G&M article. I post this as I normally respect and agree with what you say.
There is, as far as I can see, nothing unknown here. For example, the “big tent” bit is what? unnecessary? The conservative Party is not a “big tent” party, it is a Conservative party. It is not Joe Clark’s wannabe liberal party. It is a party of Conservatives, not shysters.
The supporters and creators of the current Conservative Party are biting their lips until we get a majority. If there are then no conservative policies, but a sinking boat-load of establishment liberals getting on board, then we will quit. The CPC will have to find others to run the election campaigns.

Given the despicable attack of the integrity of General Hillier, Defence Minister O’Conner and by extension, our Canadian military in Afghanistan regarding ‘torture’ of prisoners, I trust that based on the following report, a public apology will be issued by the members of the Liberal, NDP and Bloc Quebecois parties.

If the reporter – who was there – is correct, then you and your colleagues have done our military and our country a grave disservice. Your public and unwarranted accusations have been heard world wide and the damage to our reputation cannot be undone. And the greatest shame is that it was not done because of any real and personal concern for the ‘rights’ of non-uniformed combatants, but to put a spoke in the wheels of the Canadian government in order to gain votes.
In examining your conscience, you may wish to think about how you are viewed by the Canadian public and consider what you can do to repair what once was a noble and honourable role.

Some info emerging re the unidentified Calgary man picked up in Afghanistan – apparently of Pakistani background.
It seems his brother may have completed a successful suicide bombing in Agstn a while ago. (no idea if the Globe has actually verified this).
Imam Sheik Alaa Elsayed (Calgary) believes he may have counselled a young man in Calgary a few months ago that may have been this detainee. Elsayed’s statement (among others) quoted in the Globe article is “you (the young man) are going to put 65,000 Muslims in Calgary in jeopardy” (in reference to his jihadist thinking).
This would be the same Imam:
….who was, in full Imam regalia, in a leading position during the several block march of a Peace Rally held in Calgary on Aug 12/06. In the body of this same parade was a young lady marching while wrapped up in the flag of Hezbollah. The rally was held on the war memorial grounds. The march went about 7 city blocks around the grounds – then returned to the grounds for speeches.
…who delivered a speech at the foot of a War Memorial located in downtown Calgary on the grounds of park that honors our war dead.
… who, while delivering the speech, was directly facing the same flag of Hezbollah that had been in the parade and held unfurled proudly by a number of young men during his speech.
… who mingled with these same young men at the end of the speeches and others who proudly had their pictures taken in front of the same Hezbollah flag – still at the base of the war memorial.
… who apparently felt that all of the above was quite fine as he did nothing to intervene at any stage.
…who is the Imam at the Calgary Islamic School (a large charter school in NE Calgary)
How rich is this. It seems this Imam feels that the young man (if indeed it was the same young man detained)is jeopardizing the Muslim community in Calgary. He, himself did the very same thing. The MSM, of course, reported on none of this.
It would be an incredible leap to think that a person of his stature in the Muslim Community would have absolutely no idea of the absolute disgust and anger that would be felt by Calgarians/Albertans/Canadians at this desecration of our War Memorial.
Hopefully, many more details will emerge.

    Cannabis cash ‘funds Islamist terrorism’
Cannabis smokers are unwittingly funding Islamist extremists linked to terror attacks in Spain, Morocco and Algeria, according to a joint investigation by the Spanish and French secret services. The finding will be seized on both by campaigners for a harsher clampdown on cannabis and by those who argue that legalisation is the only way to end a petty dealing trend that is dragging growing numbers of teenagers into crime. The investigation by the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia and the Renseignements Generaux was launched after Spanish police found that the Islamists behind the March 2004 bombings in Madrid bought their explosives from former miners in return for blocks of hashish. The bombings claimed 191 lives.
Spain’s role as a transit point for drugs was highlighted last week when Madrid hosted the US Drug Enforcement Agency’s annual conference. Experts heard not only that North African hashish was funding terrorism in Europe, but also that West Africa had become a new hub for South American cocaine shipments bound for Europe. Morocco is the world’s leading cannabis exporter, with an annual crop estimated to be worth at least £2bn. Last month, the Moroccan navy seized three tonnes of Europe-bound hashish off the Mediterranean port of Nador. The same week, Spanish coastguards seized 4.3 tonnes of Moroccan resin off Ibiza….-

    Officials: Taliban Commander Killed
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Mullah Dadullah, the Taliban’s most prominent military commander, was killed in fighting in southern Afghanistan with Afghan and NATO troops, officials said Sunday.
Dadullah was killed Saturday in the southern province of Helmand, said Said Ansari, the spokesman for Afghanistan’s intelligence service. A government official in Kandahar province who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media said he had seen Dadullah’s body.

  34. Equality in Duceppe’s socialist world:
There are women, and, there are women of quality. But, quality does not mean equality. Say what?

Duceppe: I lost you at Hello
We interrupt your Saturday night drunken binge to report that Gilles Duceppe has dropped out of the race for PQ leadership as quickly as he joined. In his curt press release, he claims he did not want to create a divisive leadership race. As everyone knows, his real motivation was to show that Chuckercanuck is 10 for 10 on his predictions of Quebec politics. Duceppe was always going to run away from a fight, it was only a question of time.
Curiously, his press release includes assurances that he still believes in separatism. Now, folks, let’s did some Communications 101 analysis. If he has to tell you that he still believes, then he doesn’t believe. If he was too cowardly to face down Ms. Silent Flush (more on her later), then he is too cowardly to create a new country.
So, the fall out is this:
    On Gilles Duceppe
The man is damaged goods. […]
    On the Parti Quebecois
Coronation it is. Long live Queen Pauline Marois. This is a Thelma and Louise routine – running off a cliff with une ancienne from the Parizeau / Landry era. She is a multi-millionaire socialist who loves the poor little folk living in hovels down the hill. A super-sized Marie-Antoinette, she despises the middle class and will have a very, very difficult time swimming in the political currents swirling about Quebec today. There were reasons why the PQ chose a gay, coke-user with no education over her in the last PQ race – those reasons haven’t changed. No one in this province can do anything about the inevitability of Mario-mania. (Side note: Pauline Marois is most famous for spending a fortune renovating her political offices, including the purchase of silent
flush toilets. Apparently, she never eats Mexican food.)
    On Ontario
Stop telling us how much you wish you could vote for Gilles Duceppe and how cool he is. If you understood a single word he said, you’d realize, as Quebeckers do, what a phony-baloney the man is.
