It’s tragic because Mugabe has essentially destroyed what was once the ‘bread-basket’ of Africa, reducing its agricultural and economic capacity to nothing and making it an importer rather than exporter of food, setting up widespread hunger and malnutrition, 25% of the population have HIV/AIDS; average lifespan is 39.5 years, high infant mortality.
At 2,000%, it has the world’s highest inflation, and has transformed a democracy into a dictatorship. Rigged elections, using the police and military to brutally attack opponents and prevent dissent.
Now, they have reduced hydro energy, reduced communication (telephone) systems, ..
frankly- they are a mess. And only the UN, only the UN, would see this mess as a useful tool, and want to give them power, to exploit others.

so, this is the organization that bombardion and taliban jack would like us to assign our troops to, so they can do as they please…..from the oil for food scandal, y2kyoto and now this, one would have to be a complete idiot to trust anything to the UN….how many innocents have died in Africa because of this ineffectual gang of thieves….I think it is time to create a new world body, and the main qualification would be that to gain membership, your population would have to live at a certain standard(no, alby, not money)……things like fair elections(tin-pot dictators need not apply), freedom of religion(oops, that disqualifies most muslim theocracies), etc.
The interesting bit is that a lot of African states apparently support Zimbabwe, which would suggest that political folly and economic incompetence on the continent extend far beyond the borders of Mugabe’s self dug rat hole. It won’t do to take the easy way out and blame the big bad imperialistic West for all of Africa’s dreadful problems. Africans really need to start thinking one hell of a lot harder about their own internal practices- political, economic, and otherwise.

My brother travelled through Zimbabwe for a few months in the 70’s and raved what a beautiful prosperous country it was. Excellent roads and the people were healthy and lived very well. Not happy being Rhodesia and well run by Smith the people wanted a change, they got it. Always be careful what you wish for, you may get your wish.
If Sudan can be on the human rights council why shouldn’t Zimbabwe head up sustainable development committee? Might as well appoint North Korea to be the UN’s nuclear watchdog while they are at it.

The UN needs to be scrapped. Since the oft floated idea of a UN of democracies is currently unworkable due to the various standards of democracy and freedom, I recommend just abandoning the whole concept until a 2/3rds majority of both nations and individuals qualify as free by the standards of Freedom House. Until then the idea of a functional world body is just not going to fly.
