Y2Kyoto: Made In Anywhere Else But Here Fuel Standards

Keeping up with the Schwarzeneggers;

One interesting addition to the Clean Air Act requires Canada to have the highest fuel consumption standards for vehicles in the entire world. If some other jurisdiction moves the bar higher, by law, Canada will have to do better.

Oh, goody.

  1. So, where’s the Council of Canadians protesting that we are giving up our sovreignty? We’re going to let other countries define our laws and standards for us?

  2. Gee…maybe if the right laws are passed, Canada will shrink to the size of Germany and its climate will change to the relative clemency enjoyed by France!

  3. If the public was genuinely concerned about man made climate change (r) (c), it would not be revving the 200+ HP engines of their cars, driving down 401 at 140 kms/h, and same about the truckers and drivers of the cruise buses. BS.

  4. An insane idea from Liberals and NDP, I guess that means the Stephen “The Triangulator” Harper will make it policy.
When Buzz Hargrove is more conservative than the Conservatives, you know it’s bad.

  5. “So, where’s the Council of Canadians protesting that we are giving up our sovreignty?”

What if Canada and Sweden say by law we both have to be better than everyone else?

  6. Enviro Minister Baird has just annouced with the backing of major economist What the cost to Canada will be if we implement the kyoto accord. Astounding numbers, now watch for backlash.

  7. What this reveals is the adversarial nature of both the Liberals and NDP. They have no interest in clean air, for setting standards that are, by definition, constantly flexible, means that our technology to achieve a common standard, is unachievable.
If we set a standard of emissions of ‘A’ amount, and encourage our engineering design, car manufacturers, industrial designers and plant managers, to reach that ‘A’ amount – this in itself can take years to achieve.
If we, however, keep changing our standards, then the money and time spent on developing the new manufacturing designs, on building those new cars and plants – will be wasted.
This shows that the Liberals and NDP have absolutely no interest in Clean Air. They are only interested in politics.

  8. With the left having a circle jerk over erzatz fuel-efficiency (and the tories playing to that perfidy)I find it ironic that any dealer in Canada that imported mo-peds and sundry fuel-scrimping scooters could not make a go of it…even in the eastern metropoli…seems upscale Liberals prefer SUVs to mopeds…particularly in the winter šŸ˜‰
How about some substantial tariff and tax reductions on motrocycles???
I have ridden a motorcycle for the 5 months we get to do it up here for some 34 years…do I get any carbon credit for my fuel efficiency?…all I got for my environmental concern and fuel conservation was people cutting me off and trying to kill me with their 4 weeled weapons. šŸ˜‰
Time more of them spent some time in the saddle…breeds empathy.

  11. I think the intent of the law is not that bad although the law sounds like it was written by monkeys …
There are political, economic and environmental reasons why we would (as a country) want to be as efficient with our use of energy as possible; this is true in every country in the western world.
Now, the problem with most legislation surrounding this is that it ignores what is possible (either going too far or not nearly far enough) and it is usually about some feel-good issue of the day (global warming).

  12. The trouble with the ā€œglobal warmingā€ hysteria is that media by design, or for the maximum effect engages in selective reporting and hide the rest of the facts as reported in the UN document. As presented in the Kate’s post on April 18 at 12:04, that just may make people more understand what is involved, rather then create panic. Some people are all beside themselves, seriously, and genuinely afraid because they just don’t want to know more.

  13. There are none so blind as those that will not see.
Liberal Dennis Dawson is so blind. And so dumb.
He claims that resistance to Kyoto’s carbon-credits scam is the same as the resistance to the introduction of the catalytic converter.
Dawson is too stupid to see that he is actually supporting Minister Baird’s policies.
Baird wants made in Canada policies to ledgislate clean air/water initiatives. Catalytic converer type results. That’s good.
Kyoto would allow United Nation beaurocrats to force Canadians to hand over tax money to Third World despots !!??$$ Under the guise of CO2 “reduction”.
Also, if any, Any, ANY country in the world could use a degree or so it is Canada. Our Canada !!

  14. Having recently purchased a Dodge Pick up with a Hemi, I have had a real eye opener with regards to fuel economy.
The fuel econom stats are listed on the stat sheet displayed on the window of new autos.
For my truck the fuel economy was listed as 23 mpg highway and 17 mpg city. Not bad I thought, since I drive mostly highway and do not have a heavy foot.
I have never yet, now with 20,000 km on the vehicle exceeded 13.5 mpg per tankful.
In taking up what I felt was an exaggerated fuel economy claim with the dealership, I was advised that the fuel economy claims that are listed are based on Government standards.
So while the government can mandate all kinds of stringent fuel economy standards, they apparently can also adjust how those standards are measured to ensure that vehicles meet them.
So everyone (voting public, CAW, Auto manufacturers, government) feels realy good about delivering on the issue, but the bottom line is that the claims are not justified.
And Joe consumer gets the surprise.

  15. I love the enviro’s (Friends of the Earth) comments that Kyoto compliance would only cost $20 per week for a family of four, extrapolated no doubt from their $100billion calculation.
Yeah right, and the Gun Registry was only supposed to cost $2million, only then to be revealed at at least $1billion (500X).
In other words, Kyoto compliance will likely cost at least $1trillion, something like $1000 per week per family of four (50X).
Not scientific numbers, but they give some idea of real cost of sending carbon credits abroad.
Sorry, I’ll take a trained economist’s word anytime over some hard left envirowackos.
I hope the Liberals force an election on this issue, but they won’t, of course.

  16. brynr,
There will be no backlash against Kyoto cause the MSM, Red-Green alliance, etc. will spin the story and claim the report is “scare tactics” lies and propaganda.
It will work. The sheeple are stupid.

  17. As If these politicians as a group give a crap about the welfare of our Nation!ANYBODY who argues for new levels of Taxation of ANY thing needs to be taken to the woodshed. With the cadre of Liberal Sycophants sitting in our Senate and sucking off the public tit there is precious little chance of that body supporting the efforts of our Government to act responsibly!
We are now enjoying the fallout of the Trudeau era and the decades of Liberal social engineering efforts and interference in our institutions.
A sad day for those of us who cherish freedom.

  18. Warwick,
There may be no backlash comprising of rioting in the streets against Kyoto but Canadians are only going to go so far for Kyoto.
My parents, age 70+, are buying the new lightbulbs to cut down on energy consumption and turn off appliances when they are not in use. They also recycle with great zeal. But beyond these measures, which either directly save them money or just make sense (recycling), they’re not going to do much more. No doomsday scenario, how often shown by our media will change that. The environmentalists will need to go totalitarian on us before the average Canadian does more than this bare minimum.

  19. When the Kyoto Klutzes solve the Navier Stokes equations to demonstrate cloud formation and dispersion and the resultant C02 link, then I might accept their unsubstantiated drivel.
If you want to pick up a quick million bucks without stealing, show that the Naviers Stokes equations even have a solution. Never mind what that solution might be.
How in God’s name, do Kyoto Goreacle wealth transfer enhancement carbon credits in any way address GHG, except to steal from the poor and make the already rich richer?
This is an oversize ADSCAM of epic proportions.
That should put a nice SHOCK WAVE through their unsupportable proposition.

  20. Warwick: You hit the nail right on the head about the MSM, The backlash i was actually refering to were the ones like i just read on G&M comments on this, of course we have the complete denial to what this will cost our economy. Oh and yes the same old reference’s harper to bush, Rona Baird.

  21. I was wondering.
Are there any laws against spreading untrue propaganda theories like Al Gore’s etc. and masquerading these theories as “truth” and charging huge fees for same?
Could there be civil or criminal charges against these hucksters?
There are laws against false advertising and fraud.
Would any of this snake oil phoney fear mongering be open for legal actions?

  22. Why Canada, of all countries, would be opposed to “Global Warming” in the first place is a mystery to me. It sounds like they’d prefer to mandate that all vehicles have better than average fuel economy but someone who wasn’t innumerate wandered into the room in the nick of time. (I know there’s at least one pro athlete whose contract calls for him being the highest paid player, but I don’t think there have been two in the same league, yet.)

  23. I think Kyoto-lovers are just closet plant-haters.
Just like anti-Semites that hide behind the guise of anti-Zionism, plant haters hide behind Kyoto.
Kyoto seeks the destruction of poor, defenceless foliage through genocide and starvation by eliminating plant food (aka CO2.)
What has a fern ever done to Dion? I mean, aside from the fact it would undoubtedly vote NDP if it could. If ferns could vote, it would certainly imperil the Liberal party of Canada by almost doubling the intellectual capacity of their rival NDP party! In the class hierchy, the NDP’s current crop of common field potatoes would be bolstered by the revolutionary hordes of fighting Ferns growing out of control, hopped-up on performance enhancing drugs (more CO2!)
Think of the carnage! Oh, the humanity! Where’s the outrage! That’s it, I’m calling Rosie.

  24. This is just the voice of a partisan Conservative
yelling back at the radio – “John Baird speaks for me.”

  25. OMMAG, you are to lenient by half. Woodshed… ROTFLMAO. If the Canadian electorate don’t educate themselves about what the Trudopians of this country want to implement here then we are going to continue down the road Perdition and we will have helped these ‘leftist/academics’ pave the way. The latest polls show that the message is not getting out. How thirty percent of the electorate can even say the word Liberal is beyond me. If the Liberals garner this kind of mandate in the next election then the only solution maybe a combination of the Peasant’s, the American, the French, and the Bolshevik, Revolutions. Woodshed indeed, next you’ll be advocating a cedar rail, a bucket of tar and a pound of feathers. Like I said ROTFLMAO.

  27. Rupprecht,
I believe you are right on the money (pun intended). Al Gore’s carbon credit trading company is worth just over $200M. I don’t think everyone realizes what kind of conflict of interest this is. In front, there is the Goracle, prohetising the end of the world through the evil global warming unless we change our ways (it will be impossible for the west to meet Kyoto targets) or buy carbon credits. In the backroom, with his buddy Maurice Strong, they are raking in the carbon credit booty.
I wrote about it more in depth here:

  28. Watching QP, sure are a lot of empty liberal seats there. Watched the exchange between Baird and Senator Mitchell, and the Senator asking the mp who introduced the motion re kyoto, if he had done any cost analasys. Answer, it will cost more to not do anything than doing something. Finally a figure of 19 billion was mentioned.
Bet those sealers trapped in ice would like some global warming. Will anyone ask Gore about that in Regina. I would like to see a class action suit against him, then maybe he would have to answer some questions. Hey, anyone see the ad with the sign PRESIDENT in front of Dion. Maybe he is going to replace chirac, after all he is a citizen of france.

Oh great, thanks, now I can’t get that stupid @#$%#$% tune outta my head.

yes i can, no you can’t
    …dang!

  33. This would be just like any do-gooders exercise. One upmanship (or upwomanship if you prefer). I can out do you because I don’t have to pay for it; I will just suck it out of the working stiffs because I can, the poor suckers don’t have a chance, aren’t I great?

  34. You can stop all gas guzzling vehicles in the country. It won’t make a dent in our CO2 emmisions.
China’s increase in GHG each year surpases all of Canada’s total emissions in one year. China is going to build 500 Coal fired electrical power stations in the next 10 years. That’s approximately 1 per week folks..How many new generating facility’s are being built in Canada this week?
The biggest CO2 emitters in Canada is our electricity. Just think of all the electrical devices that are tapping eletricity in the last 20 years… Computers, although not a large energy user by themselves…but when you have hundreds of millions of them sapping electricity every hour, air conditioners, Cell phones by the millions… don’t only consider the battery charges on the phone but the infrastructure that is required to keep them operating…all the cell phone towers etc.. the beer fridge in the garage…etc.. the list goes on..
After Dalton Mcguinty got elected in Ontario by promising to shut down all the coal fired Electrical stations by 2007 (which he hasn’t done)he hired John Manley to study the situation… and his summary conclusion was that … “Yes Ontarions want to have the cleanest source of energy availble… but at the end of the day they expect the lights to come on when they flip the switch.”
I don’t beleive in the Global warming crap.. As Hitlers propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels said, ” If you get everyone to tell a lie enough, everyone will start to believe it.”
All the economic forcasts (Stern Report)that are presented assume that the Global warming predictions are fact. This is unbeleivable. the basic assumption is wrong.
The Green Birkenstock crowd originally caused this problem back in the 60’s. They put the fear in people against Nuclear so new electricity was generated by coal or gas. (read anything on Green Spirit, Dr. Patrick Moore the founder of Green Peace)) The old Greens caused the so called escalation in CO2 emissions and now they want us to fix their problem. This could have been averted 40 years ago if they weren’t around as Nuclear plants would have built instead of the CO2 emitting Coal and natural gas plants..etc. Why is France and Belgium so tied to Kyoto… Maybe because their electricity is generated by non CO2 emitting Nuclear plants.
My point is that in Sasktachewan we need elctricity, and unfortunately we generate that electricity with coal… shouldn’t we be considering Nuclear… as we have the fuel source rght here in sask.

  35. And AL GORE dont have one single aybrid in his garage all his lomos get 4 mpg or around that

  36. what this shows is that policy has much more to do with moral preening than it does delivering effective results.
The same thing occurred with Kyoto. The Chretien government, not having a policy of its own, told its negotiators to come back with a commitment that was stronger than that of the U.S.. What they didn’t figure on was the messiah complex of Al Gore. And of course, while Bill Clinton and Al Gore undoubtedly knew that Kyoto would never make it through the Senate anyway, and that they would not be held responsible for that, the parliamentary system provides no such check on the process. And so here we are.
