My favourite comment concerning the Quebec election was from one of the Sun’s columnists (I can’t remember which one) in today’s Calgary Sun. He said that if Boisclair doesn’t resign the leadership, his back will soon be sporting the finest of separatist cutlery.

Each of them out to promote their own best interests. So if you are looking for a note of surprise when you tell me that one of them doesn’t have my interests at heart. Keep waiting.
The Paul Canniff link to Tim Denton’s email to Ibbotson would never see the light of day in a “letter to the editor” in MSM as an example.
Fortunately SDA garners millions of readers and as Kate yesterday indicated many news media types from MSM visit here so they know thaey are being momitored by the folks.
O’Reilly on his Fox news Factor last evening made the point that 80% MSM in the US is left leaning so that blogs and Fox news are becoming the source for people in the US get the truth in news.
The NY Times and NBC are so far to the left as to actually falsify the coverage of Bush and Republicans.
Shades of Lewand at CBC a while back?
If that is the case in the US one can with justification point to Canadian MSM with exactly the same charge only worse, because we do not have the equivalent of FOX in Canada only the Western Standard Magazine and mainly SDA and a few other conservative sites to offset the leftists in Canadian media and their “nuanced” reporting.
The “racist” term being one of the lefties favourites for conservatives.
On the subject of hits my guess is the 5 million mark for SDA about Wednesday evening.
Paul, it’s interesting that Denton insists that racism is not at the root of the ADQ victory. But he does not trouble himself arguing that the victory was about anything more than how people in Québec view Muslims. Does the view that immigrants should try harder to fit in pretty much summarize the ADQ’s platform? I despair knowing that for some people, it would be enough.
The hiqab affair was unfortunate, I thought. I’ve never in my life been asked to provide photo ID when voting. I give the friendly folks my name, they tell me my address, I confirm it, they give me the ballot, I vote. Has anyone else had a vastly different experience with this?
I just caught the end of Question Period today and I heard an odd speech from NDP MP Pat Martin.
Apparently on March 2nd, he compared the Minister of Agriculture to “Il Duce”. Today, Pat Martin was basically saying that calling someone a fascist was not derogatory and comparing them to Mussolini isn’t derogatory either.
I thought it was a pretty outrageous speech.

Crabgrass, I also have had no issues with my identification at a polling booth. I’m fairly certain that they’d ask me to remove the bedsheet just to make sure it wasn’t my wife voting for me.
It does suggest, however, that we really SHOULD show photo ID or some other official ID to vote.

See how out of touch Jack Layton is with the ROC? Only the Toronto socialist elite would suggest all Canadians file taxes online. Or perhaps he hasn’t any sensible suggestions or ideas in his head.
I have read the sda commneter’s thread for almost two years now. Virtually daily.
I am starting to get the impression that many of the commenters are, not just well informed like many Canadians, but exceptionaly well informed.
In a matter of minutes, many can type off exceptionaly well informed articles on such complex topics as Quebec, the environment, the economy, the Middle East and world religeon.
They must have a world of information at their finger tips or in their minds. Probably both.
I also wonder if some of them have been involved, in the past, at a VERY high level in business, politics or civil service. Some may be very well known to us and hence the anonymity. Perhaps to just protect the innocent.
Whether or not one agrees with a particular post/comment, today it is VERY easy to accuratly check out the facts. (ie. Kyoto; MSM vs YouTube)
Fraudulent/childlike commenters are quickly laughed off a blog. MSM “journalists” are just given a temporary overseas assignment.
Ah yes, Crabgrass but I rather doubt you have ever gone to a polling station and presented yourself as the unknown comic or otherwise, especially alongside a host of similarly dressed unknowns. I highly suspect that if you had, you would have been given more than a few passing, residence based, questions. In an open society, which we are, there is something inherently wrong with hiding one’s face, whether behind a veil, a paper bag or a mask. Such covering is a physical barrier to communication, promoting separation and segregation. I prefer for reasons of honest and open communication to see the faces of those people with whom I interact. If this makes me a bigot, in the eyes of some, so be it. And, forgive me, but I do wonder why Muslim men aren’t so similarly constrained?
PS – I’m assuming you are referring to the Niqab (full veil).

High degree of possibility, undeterminable degree of probabilty. 😉
Ron in Kelowna, you are indeed correct. the variety of education, life experience that I have found since finding this spot is amazing. I find that it is almost a perpetual motion entity, the more you read, the more you dig around the internet to corroborate or expand on the issue. Even for us non-mensa folks, SDA stimulates the mind. Kind of like a virtual table at Tim Horton’s or Cheers. I find I’m always learning stuff. Just have to watch out and ignore the trolls and drunks that want to take you outside to prove themselves.
Yes, I saw that suggestion by Layton. Quite the elitist ‘party of the people’, isn’t it?
He wants a tax reduction for online tax submissions, ignoring that not every Canadian has a computer, or has internet hook-up, never mind that some might just have a dial-up line.
eeyore – I agree with your suggestin of ID to vote; Harper has suggested that; it might also cut down on the number of non-citizens who, somehow, go into vote (illegally). They get away with it.
craig n- so, was Pat Martin’s reference to the Minister of Agriculture as ‘Il Duce’, a sign of praise and support for that Minister?
crabgrass – asking immigrants to follow normative standards of the community is not an act of racism. Oh- and Muslims aren’t a separate race. In fact, there’s no such thing as ‘race’; we are all the same species. If you go to Saudi Arabia, would you insist on being served wine and pork chops in the hotel? Or would you follow the normative standards of that country?
Crabgrass – FYI, it is obligatory to show photo ID to vote in QC. This is right and proper – only citizens and residents of the province should have the opportunity to influence our future.
It’s pretty stupid to demand photo ID from someone who declines to reveal their face.
ADQ proposes “reasonable accommodation” from immigrants – in other words, they must make some attempt to adjust to our values.
How can that be construed as racist?
QC is our home and if someone is admitted to your home, is it not reasonable to expect and ask for courtesy, respect and consideration?
Did you catch Stephane Dion AND Iggy giving Stephen Harper a tongue lashing today in QP for so called “interfering” in the Quebec election:
How soon we forget: Dion himself actually was the first and he advised people to vote Green or ADQ due to his hatred of the close relationship Harper has with Charest:
Another Pot/Kettle story that the media is ignoring.
Here is just one item on this I found.:
Stéphane Dion throws rock in the water
Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 5:06 pm
It was only a matter of time before the federal politicians get involved in the provincial election, but I didn’t expect it would come so soon in the campaign, nor did I expect that Stéphane Dion would be the first, and I certainly didn’t expect to hear what he said.
It’s no surprise to anyone that Stéphane Dion really hates the Parti Québécois. Thus he invited all the Quebec federalist disapointed in the Jean Charest Liberal government to vote for the Green Party or the ADQ. Wow.
-snip-
Should we understand from this intervention that Stéphane Dion doesn’t appreciate that Harper and Charest are good friends, and that he tries by the manoeuver to lessen the Conservative’s power by hitting the provincial Liberals?
He claims it is not the case, and that he’ll make all he can to help elect Liberals in Québec. Weird way to make friends. http://www.martinbreton.com/2007/02/28/stephane-dion-throws-rock-in-the-water-s-emmele-s-en-mele/
Paul Wells made a great point in his blog last night: “…how does Stéphane Dion feel, knowing that 46 Quebec seats are now held by Liberals who agree with Stephen Harper on federalism and 42 Adéquistes who agree with him on everything else?”
And his IGGY-ness today berated Harper like a school marm saying that “playing with the untiy of our country is not a game”.
That is why we are so glad that it is not the Liberals TOYING with this issue anymore and hopefully, nevermore.

Opposition parties perform radical surgery on government’s Clean Air Act
[…]
The new version forged by the opposition majority on the House of Commons environment committee includes a commitment to international carbon trading as called for by the Kyoto Protocol. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is vehemently opposed to that provision of the climate treaty. […]
“What we’re really doing here is rewriting the bill entirely,” said Liberal environment critic David McGuinty, as the committee concluded a four-hour meeting on the legislation.
The revised bill will contain a commitment to international emissions carbon trading under the Kyoto Protocol. The government has rejected that as a scheme to send billions of taxpayers dollars abroad for Russian hot air.
It will provide for a “green investment bank” where companies that can’t meet their targets will pay $30 per tonne penalties. The companies would be able to get the money back by achieving compliance within two years.
The opposition parties appeared on track to include a reaffirmation of the Kyoto emissions-reduction targets which the prime minister has repeatedly rejected as unachievable. …- http://www.canada.com/topics/news/story.html?id=de90b954-9d19-4203-98ce-d5bed7f72912&k=26188
Bil D. Cat, I am going to watch this again. This should be shown in the state funded kindergartens. Best ever. He says what I want but with such clarity, force and coherence.
Maz2,
Are you saying that the opposition parties have provided Stephen’s excuse for an election on a platter? (Chuckles evilly and exits stage left).
Albatross39a,
I live in Ottawa and was involved in the elections, and local politics before and after. Your attempt to build this into something bigger than it is, is poor.
The person responsible for these accusations is not persuing them. The Ottawa District Labour Council (ODLC) is. Why is that?
Possibly because a) Kilrae doesn’t believe his own accusations and b) because the ODLC is making a pre-emptive strike against a mayor that will reduce unionized labour at the city money trough.
Always healthy to have Albatross doing a hurculean job of offering a foil.
We conservatives need this, considering the flush of all recent victories.
For the challenge of a few possible scams in our camp, I hope the partial list of 101 massive Liberal scams is not too cruel overkill.

Does anyone know what has happened to the 17 muslims arrested for terrorist activity in Toronto last year? As far as I know they were followed and recorded by hundreds of law enforcement personnel yet they seemed to have disappeared from the news. With all the evidence that must have been gathered surely they would have been in a trial by now.
Ron in Kelowna, I have been following SDA before it hit its first million. If you need brain stimulation, this is the site to visit. Maz2, TG, ET, Texas Canuck, just to name a few have brought so much information to this site. I enjoy my first cup of coffee, reading the new topics, catch up on the comments during the rest of the day. It really gives me hope for this country when sites like Kate’s can expose fraud, scams, religion and politics and it really is making a difference. I am totally amazed that soon, very soon this site will hit 5 Million! Where has the time gone?????

That was from a guy who wrote for Bill Maher , and yes , it is worth watching , as far as explaining left . Powerful only scratches the surface of that speech . http://minx.cc/?post=220315
A 9/13 republican .
Ignatieff today chastized Harper, saying that ‘playing with the unity of our country is not a game’.
Now wait. Wasn’t it Ignatieff who, during his campaign for the leadership of the Liberal Party proposed that Quebec should be defined as a nation? This was to be put to a vote during the Liberal convention. ‘Quebec is a nation’.
This Ignatieff motion prompted Duceppe to propose a motion in the House of Commons, that ‘Quebec is a nation’.
Harper defused the whole thing by moving in swiftly to change it to ‘the Quebecois are a nation within a united Canada’. Note the difference. It’s the Quebecois people not the Quebec territory. And it’s within a united Canada.
So- exactly who was ‘playing with the unity of our country? Wasn’t it Ignatieff?

The Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission (APC) invites you to a reception for the Aboriginal Electoral Endowment Fund (AEEF), “Honoring Women in Politics”. The AEEF is a fundraising initiative designed to support the election of Aboriginal candidates as Liberal Members of Parliament. Our invited guest speakers are the Hon. Stéphane Dion and the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin….-
maz2 – it’s possible that the Aboriginal Women’s fundraising bash was cancelled, not as a snub, but because of the old story of “What if I gave a party and nobody came’? That is – not enough people paid that $100 a ticket to attend.
RE the Larry O’Brian, Terry Kilrea story, my sense from talk today is that this is being viewed as not much more than mischief making from the Ottawa District Labour Council. (No money ever changed hands, so there is really no story here.) It was also suggested that the Ottawa District Labour Council was supporting another candidate in the recent mayoralty race and violated election rules by providing undeclared union labor to work on the candidates campaign. If anyone cares to pursue this the ODLC could find it is also being investigated by the OPP. I think part of the problem in Ottawa is that a lot of Federal politics spills over into the local arena. There are a lot of Liberals in this town who are still really mad that the Conservatives are now in power .
Has anyone actually seen maz2 and Kate in the same room , at the same time ?
Wimpy Canadian – “Your attempt to build this into something bigger than it is, is poor.”
You mean like building something bigger than it is such as Dingwall purchasing a pack of chewing gum? Something that under the rules of the Treasusy Board he was entitled to do?

In an open society, which we are, there is something inherently wrong with hiding one’s face, whether behind a veil, a paper bag or a mask. Such covering is a physical barrier to communication, promoting separation and segregation. I prefer for reasons of honest and open communication to see the faces of those people with whom I interact. If this makes me a bigot, in the eyes of some, so be it. And, forgive me, but I do wonder why Muslim men aren’t so similarly constrained?
PS – I’m assuming you are referring to the Niqab (full veil).

Is it possible that Sean Penn already tried with his recent reference to GWB’s “soiled underwear”? Does this also mean Penn knew ahead of time regarding this dam’s failure, or is it just an offshoot of his *potty* mouth?
“I also wonder if some of them have been involved, in the past, at a VERY high level in business, politics or civil service. Some may be very well known to us and hence the anonymity. Perhaps to just protect the innocent.

News stories that you never see linked in SDA

Wimpty ( pretty sure Wimpy ),
That was from a guy who wrote for Bill Maher , and yes , it is worth watching , as far as explaining left . Powerful only scratches the surface of that speech .

Scheduled to be launched in third quarter of this year, the new site is expected to reach 65 million viewers every month, accounting for 96 per cent of U.S. unique online users on a monthly basis.
This massive viewer base will be achieved largely due to a promotion deal with AOL LLC, Microsoft Corp.’s MSN, MySpace and Yahoo Inc.
The partners will offer free viewing of TV episodes and support the business with advertising.
In contrast to YouTube’s largely amateur consumer generated content, NBC and News Corp. will be offering professionally produced video. = TG

maz2 – it’s possible that the Aboriginal Women’s fundraising bash was cancelled, not as a snub, but because of the old story of “What if I gave a party and nobody came’?
Now lets see what’s worse, claiming the gum or covering up violations of Article 3 of the Geneva Convention?
