  1. Just read Ricks rant….way to go bud!
Sheesh it’s wednesday now and I bet her ass still smarts!
    Unlike her head……

  2. Sometimes while criticizing our current government Mercer appears to blow and suck at the same time. However, his recent article in the Independent certainly makes up for those other, shall we say, lesser moments of his.
That piece in the Independent was a brilliant comeback to, and expose of, a pernicious strain of faulty logic infecting a certain portion of our society. Bravo, Mr. Mercer.

  3. Never been a fan of Mercer as his left wing slant always put me off, but I have to doff my hat to him on that one. Very well written and I think it sums up the reasons why war is sometimes a “good” thing.
Kudos to you Mr. Mercer and thanks for the reminder of why we fight.

  4. Can someone forward a copy of this to Taliban Jack and any other MP they can think of that wonders what we are doing “over there”?

  5. Wow! Rick Mercer’s really doing a sword dance, eh?
Leaping from the one side, Comrade Suzuki’s Canadian Caravan of Compassion for the Climate, to the other, this extremely articulate and well-aimed missile/missal at Professor Noreen Golfman, feminazi fatale.
I’m willing to hold my fire on my opinion of Rick Mercer which, up to now, hasn’t been very positive. If he continues to expose this puerile women’s studies drivel, which is always offered, as is the radical feminist wont, with a tinge of malice, then I could be swayed.
Facts and actions speak louder than whiny, complaining rants such as Ms. Golfman’s.
    Well-said and well-done, Mr. Mercer!

  6. Hey, it’s just what i said last time; don’t be so quick to jump on Rick Mercer’s back. He’s a great guy, who calls bullshit when he sees it. And he is a fantastic supporter of our troops, and has been quick to support Harper over things like China’s human rights record, afghanistan, etc. He has a lot of coommon sense, something that is sorely missing these days in the media.

  7. It is always a giggle to see a pompous ass taken to the wood shed.
That was an extremely well written article by Mr. Mercer. It just goes to show that even dumb-ass Liberal shills can be patriots.
Patriotism is not something confined to just one political party. Unfortunately too many
    partisans believe so.
Just because Mr. Layton pushes for a troop withdrawl does not make him less a patriot.
It just makes him a misguided one.
I will take back my opinion that if the CBC went to it’s just reward Mr. Mercer would be lost without the government teat. He writes well enough to be a journalist. Is that a step backwards, or sideways? Neither is a step forward.

  8. I usually like watching Rick Mercer’s act but lately he’s jokes are of the type where “George Bush” is the punchline. A easy laugh from a left-leaning audience. (Like the Daily Show.) After reading that article, I have a lot more respect for him.

  9. I’m sorry its just like Griff said, he calls it like he sees it. While he may have some left-leanings, he certainly will not hesitate to jump on the Liberals when they are wrong. Remember the last election campaign?

  10. I remember the ‘do something about the Taliban’ email petition my feminist friends kept sending me back in the late 90s.
Of all their horrors this one seemed to appall me the most:
women can’t work + male doctors can’t treat women = women cannot receive any medical care
This one approaches holocaust levels regarding suffering and lingering deaths. It takes a moment or two of thought for the magnitude of it to sink in, which is probably why ‘progressives’ have sort of forgotten about it.

  11. Wow and WOW!!! Good on you Rick! You just drop-kicked Noreen through the goal-posts of life.

  12. Although I had classified Mercer as a one trick pony for the CBC, I too will stand up and applaud Mr. Mercer for putting Ms Professor in her place.

  13. Congratulations to Rick Mercer, a well written and to the point letter. I may not enjoy all his brutal humour and opinion, but this letter poked a stiff finger into the eye of a complacent leech who can do what she does by virtue of the sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed.

  14. Rick Mercer, you’ve made this Newfoundlander want to stand up and cheer.
I also had the pleasure of pissing Noreen Golfman off. During the last election campaign, I plastered Memorial University with those “5% GST” stickers. Lo and behold, a few nights later Noreen Golfman was on the television complaining that they were ‘all over campus.’
    You’re welcome, Noreen!

  15. Perhaps Mercer has a redeamable political soul…maybe not. Although I would applaud any Canadian media celebrity (is that what he is??) supporting our troops and Afghan commitment for all the right reasons, I don’t believe that this is what motivates Mercer’s troop support.
The guy is too insincere (an archetypal partisan Liberal) to be believed when taking a “moral” stand on humane military intervention not ordered by the Gods of peace at the UN.
Personally I think the Libs had to hire an actor to represent their “support the troops but hate the war” because they could not sell it…but maybe Mercer can…he’s the Librano poster boy for the Kyoto fraud…why not stick him out there as a symbol of Liberal “we support the troops too” schtick?

  16. I enjoyed Rick Mercer’s humor in his early days but as time went on he became, to me, nothing more than a shill for the left wing CBC propaganda machine that I am forced to pay for against my will as a Canadian.
However on the occasion of his response to the woman prof I congratulate him.
I suspect he speaks for many Candadians with the same point of view.

  17. Congrats, Rick.
A society that subjugates and de-humanizes women is good for a country like Afghanistan but it has no place in Canada. Anyone who disagrees with this is just a racist bigot and shouldn’t be allowed to voice their hateful views in our democracy.

  19. Thanks Kate for the link, Very, very surprised by Mercer’s words, very, but please let us know if Golfman has a rebutal, what could she possibly say?

  20. I await Rick’s awakening re Kyoto and letter of rebuttal to david s.
No one could write that letter without true feeling for our troops. Some things you can’t hide. Congrats to Rick.
Any possibility that his left leaning side is an act, to keep employed by the cbc.

  21. This may explain her discomfort with those that are fighting the Taliban. She could have been a damn consultant to them.

  22. Let us not too quickly overlook the use of “poor sod”, its derivation and usage, it’s from “sodomite”. It’s not used in a courteous or complimentary manner, it’s used as an expression of bemused but contemptuous sympathy – “but he had it coming, the sod”. Very insulting, when you think about it.

  23. Re: A at 10:14am – Circumcision is a largely North American phenomenon that was greatly encouraged by the medical profession a generation ago for purported medical benefits. It is not a Christian practice, as you very well know since you referenced a link making this very argument. You are being intellectually dishonest. That you think you can get away with it here of all places flaunts your stupidity. Implying moral equivalence between Islam and Christianity on this basis is really grasping at straws.

  24. Apologies for misposting the above to this tread…just more proof that men can’t multitask.

  25. I just cannot believe all these sycophantic comments in favour of Mercer. One swallow does not a summer make. The overall performance of Mercer, on balance, is quite pathetic. While his Independent piece responds well to the views of Professor Golfman it does not mean that the ‘poor sod’ has experienced an epiphany, unfortunately. For me, the man remains a jerk.

  26. Yes, Mercer has taken a quantum leap in stature in my mind. Maybe he can be annoying at times, but this article was a masterpiece.

  27. Jay
That may well be but “credit where credit is due” is something I feel is sorely lacking in politics today

  28. Speaking of Kyoto.
    It’s on DRUDGE.
“PMSH Dismisses Kyoto as a Socalist Scheme”
    w3.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/01/30/harper-kyoto.html
    LOL!

  29. I have an in-law who was the token male in a Women’s Studies Department at a major university for years. He said many times that his colleagues were all Marxist lesbians, not that there is anything wrong with that./s He was also accused and cleared of sexual harassment charges several times. And he is still major moonbat. lol! Go figure. Ya see folks, that is what can happen to a persons logic and reasoning when they take a masters degree in the ‘social’ sciences.
Kudos to Rick Mercer. He did the right thing. These professors need to be more closely monitored by parents and taxpayers. They can do and have done immeasurable harm, especially IMO, to our young men. The Duke lacrosse case is a real eye opener to many. Men in the military suffer the same attitudes and prejudices that ruined the lives of the lacrosse team. Enough. I want my tax money spent on our armed forces. We put terrible demands on them while so many of our intellectual elites and politicians treat them like dirt. The armed forces and their families are starved. While these universities are fat, fat, fat from our taxes and from innumerable ‘grants’.

  30. Well, I now have at least a modicum of respect for Mr. Mercer. He may be a liberal shill but at least he’s not part of the anti-war crowd. Perhaps he hasn’t lost all of his Newfie soul after all?

  31. Mark Holland the CBC and Drudge have done the world a favour by releasing Harper’s warning about the Kyoto fiasco and it will suck millions of Canadian dollars into communist countries who are not in the Kyoto agreement.
That is information that no MSM journalist would ever write.
Silver lining folks in the morass of Kyoto.
The whole world now knows what a crock of Sh8t the Liberals perpetrated on Canada with Kyoto.

  32. Re: Harper’s letter. This one seems to be backfiring on the MSM. Their mistake – printing the whole letter rather than taking juicy quotes out of context.
The IPCC did Harper a big favour today. They took an unproven theory – human induced global warming – ran some computer simulations where it’s assumed the science exists, and yelled “the sky is falling.”
Trouble is, they’ve been making these predictions all along. They’ve yet to explain how:
    – .15% of total CO2 attributable to human activity has caused warming already, that will last 1000 years (1 major eruption like Krakatoa equals all human CO2 emissions since the industrial revolution
    – most “warming” took place before 1950
    – as Harper pointed out in his letter, Europe is compliant, so no reductions there. Developing world is exempt, US has opted out. That leaves – CANADA, which is responsible for 2% of total emissions, equally .003% of emissions
    – if we are all going to die, why is it OK for China, India et al to burn up all the oil and coal?
Harper is right; this is about pollution (the real stuff). Of course, CO2 emissions will also be reduced. If we take our wealth and ship it off as credits, how can we develop the next energy technology after carbon fuels?
No emission credits, period. The European system is already a mess and credits were sent to China, who are planning 500 coal-fired electrical generating stations. Even if Kyoto were fully complied with, China alone would outstrip reductions five-fold.
Kyoto and the so-called theory (unproven) and political science at best.

  33. Have to agree with most comments here. Not a big fan of Mercer but everyone here has to admit that his letter to Noreen is his second home run for Canada. His first? The skinny-dip clip with the ex-dip.

  34. Well, I am always of two minds about Mercer, but at least let’s all get the “sod’s” rank correct. It is MCpl (Master Corporal). Well ok it is not actually a rank but an appointment but splitting hairs and all 😉

  35. For those who feel Mercer’s politics on other issues somehow translate into a lack of sincerity in his devotion to Canadian Forces members, I’d suggest you remove the tinfoil helmets. Not everyone is as tribal as you. In fact, most of us don’t parlay an opinion on one issue into a slate of beliefs on everything from economics to legal reform.
Mercer has been a consistent and public booster of the CF for at least a decade now. The man spent Christmas at a cozy little FOB called Strong Point West, huddled around a Coleman stove with a bunch of tired and dirty grunts, for heaven’s sake! That’s not careerism, folks, it’s a genuine respect and admiration for our troops.
If you don’t believe me, ask a soldier who has shaken his hand in some godforsaken corner of the planet.
When it comes to Kyoto or the Accountability Act or any number of other issues, I’ll let Mercer take his lumps. But when it comes to the CF, he’s got their back, and as a result – on this issue – I’ve got his.

  36. Noreen is her own worst enemy.I had only been back in Newfoundland less than 6 months, I left in 66, when I read her May 30-04 article in the Independent on the brilliance of Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 and saw red.
My letter to the editor was published in the following edition. I said:
“I found it so hard to comprehend her thinking that I had to read Noreen Golfman’s “Sacred Art” article several times just to try get a grip on the thought process. The stretch from an “abrasive, offensive and heretical” individual,(Peter Walker) according to Peter Bell in 1984 to her fawning admiration of michael moore’s despicable award winning Fahrenheit 9/11, blows the proverbial mind.
I know Peter Walker from squat ! Never even heard of him or Noreen ,for that matter, until I read Golfman’s screed in your publication. Google gave me the essence. Peter is a legend in his own mind. Twenty years ago he stired up the proverbial here and now he is for all intents and purposes , “unknown”
Fast forward to michael’s scatological debris.
Noreen says,”To disclose for a moment, I thought his much vaunted documentary on those troubling high school murders in Colorado, Bowling for Columbine, was an unmitigated fraud.” She has it right. Good analysis and an accurate assessment of the twit. Now comes the fun part, having identified the leopard she then espouses his accuracy in F9/11. I haven’t seen such blatant hypocrisy since Bill Clinton said,” I never had sex with that woman.” Ms. Golfman’s animus for President Bush is so vicious that she has compromised her own sense of honesty. I find the article speaks volumes about her unbridled hatred of the truth to such a degree that ”Art” can and will be corrupted to aid ones political agenda. This from a professor of literature. Pathetic! I feel sad for our students and I suggest we all pay closer attention to who we allow into this province to corrupt/ teach our children especially since she has been or is on a committee to vet new staff. Scary thought.”

I agree Damian, and I too have his back. It seems Rick Mercer has always been there for us and always put our welafre first. God bless em!

  38. Obviously Mercer strikes a chord here… just finished doing a mea culpa to him myself.
“There have been times lately when I’ve been put off by comedian Rick Mercer. I’ve wondered how much of his leaning on the Conservatives has been influenced not simply by its comedic heft, but by his being gay… or because he’s working for Pravda Canada, as the CBC is affectionately known around here.”

  39. Damian also said,
“In fact, most of us don’t parlay an opinion on one issue into a slate of beliefs on everything from economics to legal reform.”
Actually, most of us do exactly that, for reasons very well explained by Thomas Sowell in “A Conflict of Visions”. It’s the old “tragic, fallen nature of Man” versus the “perfectability of a naturally good Man” debate that has gone on since Rousseau. The former are generally on the right, the latter on the left (and burdened with the task of convincing themselves that this time, tens of millions of people won’t have to die to bring about their utopia).
Mercer may simply be our Joseph Lieberman or Tony Blair — Churchillian about existential threats, but a nanny-state squish about everything else.
