  1. I was poisoned and Russia’s political enemies were surely behind it
    The Financial Times ^ | December 6 2006 | Yegor Gaidar
On November 24, I found myself involved in a succession of events that resembled a political thriller. A lot has been written about what happened. International television provided detailed coverage of these events. I had not thought that global fame would find me in such an unusual way. I deliberately refused to give interviews. Nevertheless, I am compelled to tell what happened.
Public opinion reserves a degree of humour for those who have survived attempted murder. The nature of this phenomenon is not clear to me. Having been in this situation myself, I found nothing funny about it. But the logic of public consciousness is a fact of life. One has to reckon with it. I will try to keep my sense of humour while telling what happened. …-

  5. Further to maz2’s posting about PMSH’s Christmas greeting, I would encourage PMSH to deliver a similar greeting to other cultures/religions as their respective “seasons” commence. This would be inclusive and respectful, and would not violate the secularity of the government by highlighting but one religion.

I’d like to finish with another paragraph from the “Iraqi Perspectives Project,” this one also based on a captured Iraqi document. I hope you’ll bear with me as I quote verbatim.
As I read, I’d like you to think about the
    conventional wisdom, as articulated by
    Representative John Murtha and others,
    that until the U.S. invasion,
Iraq had nothing to do with terrorism.
The Saddam Fedayeen also took part in the regime’s domestic terrorism operations and planned for attacks throughout Europe and the Middle East.
In a document dated May 1999,
Saddam’s older son, Uday, ordered preparations

New Taliban rules target Afghan teachers (20 teachers killed this year)
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – The Taliban gunmen who murdered two teachers in eastern Afghanistan early Saturday were only following their rules: Teachers receive a warning, then a beating, and if they continue to teach must be killed.
The new list of 30 rules, decided on during a high Taliban meeting in September or October and since circulated over the Internet, span from the organizational — no jihad equipment may be used for personal means — to the health conscious — militants are not supposed to smoke.
They also contain a grave warning for aid workers and educators.
Rule No. 24 forbids anyone to work as a teacher “under the current puppet regime, because this strengthens the system of the infidels.” One rule later, No. 25, says teachers who ignore Taliban warnings will be killed.

Did he pay for his education in France?
If he paid the tuition of a French citizen, then France does not recognize his Canadian citizenship
    – he ‘owes’ the mother country (France) his FIRST allegiance by virtue of his getting reduced tuition at a French University.
In the event of war in France he owes the mother country his service in war.
Can he fullfill his duty as a French citizen if he were to ever be elected PM of Canada?
Can he afford to repay his mother country for his education should he wish to renounce his French citizenship?

LONDON: Protests are planned around the world today (Sunday) against the mass rape of women and girls allegedly by Sudanese government soldiers and allied militiamen in Sudan’s western Darfur region.

Police to probe anti-Jew election flyer ruse
    November 29, 2006
    Jennifer O’Brien
    The London Free Press
At the request of London’s Muslim and Jewish communities, police are probing a fake flyer left at doors of several Jewish homes days before the federal London North Centre byelection, Chief Murray Faulkner said Nov. 28.
Disguised as a political endorsement of Liberal candidate Glen Pearson by the Canadian Islamic Congress, the back of the flyer had three cartoons reflecting a close link between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Israel.
The CIC has denied involvement with the flyer, which seems to suggest Muslims should support Pearson because the Harper government is pro-Israel.
“It was inferring negative things about why the CIC endorsed Glen Pearson instead of Dianne Haskett,” said Faisal Joseph, leader of the Association of London Muslims.
    …….
The front of the flyer contained statements pulled off the official CIC website, where candidates were given grades — including an A for Pearson and an F for Conservative Dianne Haskett. However, the website carried no cartoons.
    ……..
In an e-mail sent Saturday to Glen Pearson’s Liberal headquarters and to B’nai B’rith, the president of the CIC denounced the flyers.

One of the more vocal skeptics in the room was Conservative MP Greg Thompson from New Brunswick, now the minister of veterans affairs responsible for the Agent Orange file.

  40. Of Mailer and Murder
    by Theodore Dalrymple
    Excerpt:
While I was in New Zealand, I learned of two cases that seemed emblematic of the Mailerian developments in the new Zealand criminal justice system. The first concerned a man with 102 convictions, many for violence including rape. (I should point out that 102 convictions means many more offences, since the conviction rate is never 100 per cent of the offending rate, and is sometimes only 5 or 10 per cent of it.)
This man nevertheless became eligible for parole. As conditions of parole, the board told him he must not drink, smoke cannabis or frequent certain places. The man told the board that he would abide by none of these conditions, but he was released on parole anyway. Within a short time, he had killed three people and so maimed a fourth that she will never recover.
The second case was of a man with many previous convictions, some for violence, who abducted and murdered a young woman aged 24. He was imprisoned and applied for bail. Three times he was turned down, but a fourth judge granted him bail. He was sent to live at a certain address, where he befriended his neighbours, who did not know that he was accused of murder. Eight months later, while babysitting their children, he killed one of them.
Perhaps the most extraordinary twist of this terrible tale is that the parents of the murdered child then had another baby, which the social services then removed from them on the grounds that they had previously entrusted a child to the care of a murderer and were therefore irresponsible parents. The state blames its citizens for the mistakes – if that is what they are – that it makes.
What lies behind this terrible, wilful incompetence? I suppose some people might say that anecdotes mean nothing; that it is statistics we have to look at, and the majority of people sent out on parole, or on bail for murder, do not kill again. The questions we should be asking are what proportion of people who say in advance that they have no intention of abiding by parole conditions go on to commit serious crimes if granted parole anyway, and what proportion of accused murderers granted bail kill again while on bail. In the light of these questions, the decisions taken in the two cases I have cited might appear slightly less absurd.
This is dust in our eyes, however. The presumption must be against someone who has been convicted of 102 previous offences, many of them violent, or someone who has been convicted of many previous offences and is suspected on the strongest possible grounds of having killed. It is morally frivolous to suggest otherwise. …-

  41. “This cult of the euphemism is like a disease.
    It sickens our understanding,
    it weakens our defences,
it upsets our sense of truth.
And if anyone thinks words don’t really matter
    they’re not only foolish
but clearly wouldn’t object to having their
    mother called a filthy name.”
    ‘Tis The Time To Judge

As Christmas approaches people like me are expected to write columns about the horrors of saying “Happy Holidays,” about the attack upon the traditional Christmas and about how dreadful it is that Nativity scenes are banned from certain shopping malls.
All of that may be true. But as much as we should be less materialistic and more faithful and religious, I’d like to make another plea as we enter the Christmas season. Be more judgmental.
In the name of all that is good and holy and right and precious, be more judgmental.
Now let’s sort out our definitions here. Don’t preach one thing and do another because that would be dishonest. Don’t condemn that of which we are also guilty because it would be hypocritical. Don’t look to judge when we can do otherwise.
But call a sin a sin and a crime a crime and never confuse morality with manners and compassion with sentimentality*. …-

  42. Cold, eh?
So cold that this “leading…blah, blah, blah” “asked not to be named”.
Why not? It’s too “sensitivity”. He really means it’s too hot; too uncomfortable, too damning for the warmites.
The Kyotoists, including French socialist Kyoto Dion, Maurice Strong, are hucksters, frauds, fear-mongers. The driver behind the fraud is the Green-Greed ethos: $$$$$$$$$$.
Hypocrites unparallelled; Greens are the “Greed R’Us Inc.”
    Cold cash, eh?

UN downgrades man’s impact on the climate

Mankind has had less effect on global warming than previously supposed, a United Nations report on climate change will claim next year.
The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says there can be little doubt that humans are responsible for warming the planet, but the organisation has reduced its overall estimate of this effect by 25 per cent.
In a final draft of its fourth assessment report, to be published in February, the panel reports that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has accelerated in the past five years. It also predicts that temperatures will rise by up to 4.5 C during the next 100 years, bringing more frequent heat waves and storms.

The panel, however, has lowered predictions of how much sea levels will rise in comparison with its last report in 2001.
Climate change sceptics are expected to seize on the revised figures as evidence that action to combat global warming is less urgent.
Scientists insist that the lower estimates for sea levels and the human impact on global warming are simply a refinement due to better data on how climate works rather than a reduction in the risk posed by global warming.
One leading UK climate scientist, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity surrounding the report before it is published, said: “The bottom line is that the climate is still warming while our greenhouse gas emissions have accelerated, so

  43. Does anyone remember all the hype and ridicule about those cults of the past-there was that comet thing, all those dead in Montreal, the kool-aid fiasco, and many I can’t remember. Many asked, how could someone be so stupid to believe this that or the other thing leading to the end of the world, and kill themselves over it. Well, I put all those that believe in global warming in the same category. So far there have been no mass suicides over it, just mass thefts of our money to meet unattainable targets. I really put global warming on the same scale as the Nigerian scams.
