  1. Interesting quote on the tragedy of the deaths of the two little sisters in Barrie, Ont. Their mother has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
…Sharon Lynn, whose daughter, Amanda, lives in the building, said the accused mother deserves sympathy because of the difficult situation with her estranged husband. “It was very bad,” she said. “That mother needs a hug.” – (Kelly Patrick, Canwest News Service) (in Vancouver Province).
    A Hug???????

  4. “The instantaneous reaction is from one electron “jumping” on the wire at on end and another electron “jumping” off the wire at the other end.”
Ah yes, before there was The Neutron Dance there was The Electron Drift.
If one built an incompressible poking stick of negligible mass 186,001 miles long could you tap out a message to the far end that would arrive faster than the speed of light?

  5. BTW – Re “Speed of Light” and elctricity.
Since I was able to demonstrate in high school lab that electricity Does Not travel at the speed of light by using an oscilliscope a battery and a switch along with some wire….and I’m pretty sure that the world has not changed that much in 40 years or so!
I think the esq. schmuck is out to prove he knows about as much about physics as he does about politics….or economics….or philosphy….or history…or current events ….or ….well you get the picture!

  7. Texas Canuck,
Sounds like you work at a synchrotron. I used to work at the one in Saskatoon, very interesting work.

  8. Schmuck, nee Robert J, writes that “Voltage shows up in the conductor at the speed of light […] voltage traverse[s] the conductor at the speed of light.”
Voltage does not “show up” in a conductor – at all. Voltage does not “traverse” a conductor – at any speed. Voltage is a measure of the potential difference between two charges. The voltage varies as the charges change, which happens at varying speeds depending on the properties of the current and of the conductor.
In other words, when you close a switch between (say) a battery and a lamp, voltage does not suddenly appear at the lamp. The voltage was already there when the switch was open. Closing the switch just starts the flow of current, which will then cause a change in voltage as the potential differential is drained.
In summary: (1) voltage doesn’t move at all, (2) it doesn’t change at the speed of light (how could it — the very concept is nonsensical).
Given that this has all been explained to him before, and can easily be verified (for example, via Wikipedia), Schmuck’s refusal to learn from the knowledge of those who know more than him implies that he is unfit for any intelligent discussion of any sort.

  9. light travels in packets known as photons.
The speed of light is a constant denoted:
c = 3.0 x 10exp(8) m/s as in the formula for energy given by Einstein
    E = m c exp(2)
An electron is the subatomic particle that moves a charge. also note the wave particle duality construct.
    cf also Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncertainty_principle
you can tell the location or the speed of a charged particle but not both.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electron
    These are differing physics phenomena.
Schmuck is exactly as his name implies, and indicates he has little understanding in this area.
BTW my degree is in mathematics and physics.
We can rest assured that Schmuck will not be building or designing any circuit boards for computers any time soon.

  10. Not to put too fine a point on it, but light, photons, duality, uncertainty, and electrons aren’t really important in the discussion. Schmuck was making a claim about *voltage* per se. He’s been making it here for months now, under various names. He’s been debunked before.
Voltage is a measure of potential energy differential. It is defined as one joule of energy per coulomb of charge. Voltage does not move. Voltage varies as charge moves. Charge does not move at the speed of light. Ergo, voltage does not vary at the speed of light.
And it doesn’t because the concept is nonsense. Look, the speed of light is a measure of distance or displacement divided by time, like meters per second. The only things that can vary over time at the speed of light are distances or displacements. But voltage is not a distance or displacement. It is a meaure of potential energy. Voltage can only vary in units of joules per coulomb per second, not meters per second. So it can’t vary at the speed of light: THE UNITS ARE WRONG!

  11. Yikes, I meant to say: Voltage can only vary *over time* in units of joules per coulomb per second. It can of course, for example, vary over distance in units of joules per coulomb per meter. But that’s still not meters per second, is it? No, no matter how you slice it, voltage can’t change at the speed of light. The concept is nonsense.

  12. Dang, I made another mistake. It is not the case that voltage is defined as one joule of energy per coulomb of charge. That’s the definition of one volt. Voltage is defined as joules of energy per coulomb of charge. Sorry about that.

  14. Ummm, djb, because they desire privacy?
Because they’re running an unabashedly pro-Western Civilization and pro-Canadian Forces website during a time of war while our Islamic Fascist enemy repeatedly threatens the lives of journalists, cartoonists, film producers, professors, politicians, lay people, the pope, and others who are even vaguely critical of their religion founded by a mass murderer and 6-year old girl marrier?
Or maybe… just to prevent spam.

  15. djb,

Why don’t you try writing them and asking them?

  16. Of course the speed of electons doesn’t come into consideration when using Naquadria for an energy source ;-)))

  17. Oh hell, the speed of electrons doesn’t even come into consideration when using a good Pilsner or Port as an energy source 😉

  19. “Why don’t you try writing them and asking them?”
I did. No reply. I thought Steve Janke might know as he’s linked to there on a daily basis, but he denies any connection.
I find it interesting that of all the news aggregators, whoever this is chooses to hide. I can think of lots of reasons to do it, but none of them are particularly good, IMO.

  20. Schmuck could however convert 12 volts into light speed if someone showed him where the headlight switch is located on his Lada.

  21. yo, tex, combinations of nand gates will provide all the basic logic curcuits ie and, or, nor, not, thus nand gates are going to hold bits given the correct configuration.
vitus: you are unduly wrapped up in semantics.
the fact is, if you put a voltmeter at both ends of a very long conductor and apply voltage to one end, the meter at the other end will show voltage lickety split, ie the speed of light ANY ‘lag’ is due to the very simple and understandable (well except you) FACT that measuring devices thus far cannot react to the presence of the votage that ‘showed up’ to accurately reflect that indeed it is there. the devices need to either charge up some electronic sensor or in some other manner take some time to indicate the presence of a voltage. in response to the emf apllied at the other end of the very long conductor. it is the reason high frequency AC streams off in the form of electromagnetic radiation AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT. the e m f has to be travelling that fast to leave the atoms on the antenna. photons dont have that barrier. in fact as all we clever people know, photons in fact to much better dashing about in the absence of any medium. not so electron. they need a conductor. thus the whole business of capacitance etc come into play. the delays are in the measuring devices; the voltage is there at the speed of light.
and Im still waiting oh wise one on your impressive explanation of how induction works. Im not interested in the mathematics on prediecting the amperage depending on the strength of the field or the voltage depanding on the ration of coils, Im waiting for you o wiseass, er wise one, to tell all us bedazzled serfs how megawatts of power somehow leap across the insulators inside the transformer.
hint: ye olde quantum physics at it again. (which while we’re on the topic of voltage also explains the voltage difference but clearly you’re going to get all fouled up in semantics again on that one).
perhaps hans can give us the answer. he is so clever you see. unfortunately he neglected to include the factoid in his calculations that time is most maliable and thus the ‘speed’ of light gets measured against a multitude of rates of ‘time’. furthermore, no one here has ventured an answer as to why the photon has already accelerated to the ‘speed’ of light before it has left the outer edges of the atom, and equally quickly stops accelerating. do tell hans, how can this be? and what does this phenomenon tell us about the manner in which the universe sprang into existence? there is a link and if the next posting I see isnt a rude insult I will tell one and all exactly what that link is.
oh, by the way 513, I once dished out comeuppance to a retailer that seriously bunned me off by converting the 12V o/p from a cordless drill battery into an AC invertor, thence to a transformer yielding some 400 – 500 V which I plugged into their intercom system via an off-the-shelf RJ11 plug. which mysteriously went silent when I tapped the push button wired onto one side of the drill contacts.
    I win !!!

…the experience has led some to question one of the ostensible cornerstones of Canadian social tolerance – the official policy of multiculturalism adopted by successive governments in Ottawa.
That policy too often focuses on trivialities like celebrating ethnic dress, dance and cuisine, complained Shaklikar, while neglecting the need to educate newcomers in the duty to respect others.
“If we are serious about being a multicultural society, we might have to move beyond food and dance recognition and actually have a discussion about core values like the rule of law. . . . If you disagree with someone you can’t just blow them up. And if you do blow them up you will be punished.”…

What kind of spam filter doesn’t allow links for frig sakes? It’s a blog.
