The questions surrounding how Curtis Dagenais came to surrender have been answered. He was discovered in a hayfield by Armand Smith, who farms north of Mildred. He and his wife Rosanne talked with the suspect for several hours, and convinced a very dispirited Dagenais to turn himself in. They accompanied him to the Spiritwood RCMP detachment.
A trust fund has been established for the children of the slain officers. The details are here.

Hmmmm – “discovered in a hay field” – and this after weeks of an intensive search. Seems like more details will be even more interesting.
From Toronto Star – Lucas (charged with some 100 firearms violations) has just been released on parole by an Ontario Provincial Judge after having been detained by a magistrate. $50,000 dollars bail with no payment into the court. Ludicrous.
Let’s see if the judges in SK have more resolve than seems the case in Ontario. Apparently Dagenais has been charged with two counts of Murder – let’s see how quickly these are downgraded to Manslaughter. Please let this be a test case to charge/convict on Murder and have the penalty such that justice is served in its entirety. Anything less will be a total mockery of the justice system in Canada.
Sadly I expect the murderer will recive a sentence of life, which translates to about 7 years actual jail time per count, and he’ll be out in about 10 to 12 years.
Our justice system sucks.
I am just waiting to see how the RCMP will somehow charge the Smith Family for a crime because they did what the RCMP could not do with a 100 officers, ” FIND THE CRIMINAL ”
Justice system ??
How about “coddle the criminals” system
Right on cue, Wendy Cukier and the other gun haters pipe up.

REGINA (CP) – The shooting deaths of two RCMP officers in northern Saskatchewan and other crimes like it in recent years show the need to maintain the federal registry for long-barrelled firearms, gun control advocates say.

So despite the fact that almost all these crimes are committed with unregistered guns by criminals that shouldn’t have them, their solution is to continue to harass law-abiding citizens to register the guns that aren’t used to commit crimes.

“So despite the fact that almost all these crimes are committed with unregistered guns by criminals that shouldn’t have them, their solution is to continue to harass law-abiding citizens to register the guns that aren’t used to commit crimes.”
This makes sense if the objective is a to continue to receive the benefits of a UN NGO: plush office, fame & recognition, salary, expenses, etc.
Isn’t that what keeps most activist groups in business?
Willl he be allowed to appeal his sentence? frankly they should give him fronteer justice a leinth of rope a good tree with stout limbs and a horse and let him swing and screw AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Dagenais’ guns, like Roszko’s were unregistered and illegal. Will the pro-long gun registry zealots never get it?
Exactly right Gunney99.
Unfortunately the anti-gun lobby in Canada is pernicious, infesting the bureaucracy as well as the NGOs.
Here’s a summary of one day of the recent UN Small Arms Conference:
The issue of UN regulation of civilian firearms raised its ugly head again at the UN Small Arms Conference today. The move was led by Mexico, Colombia and of all countries – Canada. Many observers were chagrined that the Canadian delegation would take such an anti-gun stand even though there is a new Conservative government in Ottawa. Canadian disarmament bureaucrats seem to be running the delegation. The U.S. held firm on the issue of civilian firearms. The meeting bogged down with little or no resolution of major issues…

Interestingly, Wendy Cukier was NOT part of the Canadian delegation. However, she was part of the Mexican delegation!??
cukier is a hypocrite to the max.
I was in a gun shop in hamilton area around the time the alan rock road show was setting up. she brought a piece into the store for adjustment.
I didnt know who ‘wendy cukier’ was at the time.
store owner could have reported her for not having proper conveyance permit.
got that folks? CUKIER CARRIES. and considers herself above the law.
three strike yer out diet plan:
a ‘dude’ commits a felony and gets busted and sentenced. now the dude has a criminal record and crime #1 racked up.
dude cant get FAC due to said conviction so side steps the oh so stringent alan rock regulations and ‘acquires’ desired piece anyway.
hmmm. no paperwork, possessing a firearm…. crime # 2.
why does dude want a firearm ?? collector’s item ?? target shooting ?? hunting ?? no, no and no. wants it to add zest to carjacking career, holdups, enhanced image during drug deals etc.
that’d be crime # 3.
where does the alan rock regulations factor in this mode of behaviour ??? the criminals’ acquisition of guns, below the radar ???
TimR, we can only hope this means Wendy has had enough of gun-crazy Canada, and is contemplating a move to Mexico.
Bon Voyage.
Hey Robert J, do you have any way to corroborate that info? That would be DELICIOUS info to release to the media ! Maybe the gun shop could confirm it?
tom:
hmmm. Im shitty at remembering names. I cant even recollect the name of the street the shop was on but I can get there without detours flawlessly. I will look up a hamilton ph. book and will recognize the name if they are still around.
in the last election, the one the lieberals lost, paul martinet let go a trial balloon about banning handguns all together.
I ripped into the local liberal candidate pointing out the extreme awkward position martinet just put legal owners and shopkeepers in by shooting (pun intended) his mouth off. very irresponsible and not thought out at all:
do gun owners now sell off their collection for fear of it being confiscated ?? are they going to be compensated, and did any lieberals add up the potential cost of compensation from any siezure program ?? and what about the shopkeepers; how the fuk can they carry on business with the possibility in the customers’ minds that the legally acquired firearm is gonna get siezed soon after ?? ‘better wait to make the purchase’ syndrome, meanwhile his rent still has to be paid.
and what about when hundreds of gun owners hedge their bets and all herd down to the shop to sell off their guns whilst they can ?? what is that going to do the prices they get?? and is the shopkeeper going to suspend all purchases for fear of being stuck with 1/2 million in unsellable mechandise ?? and what about if this all happens and the lieberal politically correct scheme never materializes ?? what then ?? go thru the whole friggin procedure all over again ?? etc etc etc.
f*kin NONSENSE.
when are these ^%$$#^@!%@ IDIOTS !!! going to FINALLY get it RIGHT with the handgun regulations ???
I think what’s even a sadder statement on our justice system is that the officers in questions were not given the chance to die with dignity. Life support could not be stopped in case some lawyer later on used THAT as the reason they lost their life and not the fact that this low-life shot them.
The whole thing is an absolute travesty.
I fear I am naive.
Surely someone who is found guilty of murdering 2 RCMP will never walk among us again. Puh-leeze.
Also, I tend to believe the story of the couple who found him hiding in their hay. My first thought, on hearing that he was transported to the depot by ‘friends’ was that they’d likely be charged as accomplices / aiding and abetting. I think now that they dealt with the situation as best they could. They were acquaintances not friends. I don’t know what I’d have done in their situation – a call to 911 might have meant more bloodshed. I’m sure it was the longest 6 hours of their lives. Can’t imagine serving sandwiches and coffee.
A month til his next hearing? Hope the case is airtight by then. Lock him up.
Unfortunately SK jails have a high percentage of native inmates. Knowing that Robin Cameron held the respect of many people, I think prison may hold a relevant hell for him.
Your other thread mentions Baffin Island as a solution – I agree.
mans laughter. put the 2 words together you get a get out of jail free card.
I think that after much has been digested and things have settled down, the Smith couple deserve a HERO award! Yes, coffee and lunch may seem strange to some, but these were regular folks. To negotiate calmly for 6 hours, avoiding further disaster, and then simply driving Canada’s Most Wanted man into the same RCMP detachment where the two fallen officers worked, is astounding when you think about it!
Sure they could have had anger and called 911 and everything could have gone south again, but they appear to have done it so calmly! Perhaps “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” could take a trip to the Mid-East! 😉
re: wendy cukier (kookier?)
it wuz Al Simmons gun shop at 122 Locke Street south, hamilton. aka as sheila copps old stomping ground, you know, the former environmental minister whose riding included the by far WORST polluted body of water in the country, burlington bay.
the thing has a layer of heavy metal contaminated soil on the bottom 30 friggin feet thick.
anyways, the gun shop is still in the phone book so I assume its still at the address indicated, and the 800 number is 1-877-454-0416.
I got the story about cukier (kookier?) some time between about 1993 when I priced a ruger 45 and 1996 when I sold all my target pistols when my daughter expressed disapproval of them being in the house and offered to pay me the difference what I paid for them and what Al bought them from me for.
hopefully they all remember the day cukier shows up with a disassembled firearm sans proper permit.
