Heads Up

“To be launched next week in Regina.
Monday Update: Ottawa Sun;

The Tory government is expected to announce plans tomorrow requiring that all Canadian gasoline contain 5% renewables, such as ethanol and biodiesel, within four years.
Environment Minister Rona Ambrose, Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn and Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl are scheduled to meet with officials from several provinces in Regina tomorrow to discuss, among other things, the Conservatives’ renewables plan and how to achieve the standard by 2010.

  1. A lot of the farmers are going to need convincing to get on board. They have been burned more than a few times over the years. That is why Federal and Provincial incentives are needed to encourage Ethanol production. A 10% mix is apparently something that all the cars on the road today could accommodate. Harper could be an environmental and farm hero in one fell swoop. The time is right. He should mandate its use ASAP.

  2. Good scoop for catprint. But I say:
    Oh no, not more subsidisation for farmers;
why doesn’t the government ever subsidise me?
OK So it would be a smart political move on
behalf of the Conservatives but it will just
    waste energy more rapidly.
    Listen:
    1. There is no man-made global warming. Mars is
    warming too.
    2. We do not have a shortage of energy in this
country. We have more oil than Saudi Arabia; let
    alone coal and Uranium.
    3. It is unclear whether there is an actual net
    energy gain with Ethanol.
    4. There is plenty of energy available but the
    enviromentalists and cripto stalinists keep
preventing us from developing it. Enough
    for 10,000 years.

  3. Ethanol farm subsidies are harmful to the environment. Pay farmers to do nothing before paying them to waste resources for ethanol production – that would be the most environmentally friendly course of action.

  4. Since it takes more energy to produce ethanol than you ever get out of the finished product (especially after you factor in the fuel for tractors and transportation, petrochemicals for fertilizer and pesticides, and the coal or natural gas used to power the fermentation and distillation process), putting ANY money at all into ethanol is simply crazy.
But then again, science and economics have little to do with decisions like this.

  5. Governments don’t have to subsidize farmers. They do have to mandate ethanol being used as an additive in gasoline. It is not that Canada has an oil shortage but rather America does. Since all Alberta oil goes to America a little ethanol development would delay oil depletion and give us a leg up on an alternate fuel. We all agree I hope that oil is a non-renewable resource and we need an alternate fuel ready when oil runs out or becomes unavailable due to geo-political events.

  6. Great News!!! There is a massive ethanol plant being planned for Northern Alberta in the High Level area. It will provide a value added market for agriculture and forestry in the area – and , guess what? No taxpayer money is needed…governments don’t pick winners and losers-the marketplace does. Pioneers, free enterprisers, entrepreneurs…
Even Bill Gates has recently invested in ethanol plants. Is is California that is already at 10% mandated? Any other US states?

  7. We must keep up with the Jones’.
“In August 2005, President Bush signed a comprehensive energy bill which included a requirement to increase the production of ethanol and biodiesel from 4 to 7.5 billion US gallons (15,000,000 to 28,000,000 m³) within the next ten years. It is expected that in the short term the majority of this increase will come from ethanol produced from corn.”

  8. I would much rather my fuel dollars be spent “subsidizing” American, Australian, or Canadian farmers than any random Sheik. As a market capitalist, I am strongly against buying subsidized product. But, as a human being, I am dead set against being held for ransom.
We may not have enough oil, but it is possible that we have enough arable land to bridge the financial divide, eventually without subsidy. The market and the supporting infrastructure will mature. Imagine a retooled refinement process and car engines specifically designed to more efficiently produce and burn ethenol based fuel.
No one knows what the ultimate answer is to our geo-political fuel conundrum. The answer may be simple. I saw a story recently on an experimental project that turned pig shit into gasoline. Check the link provided by Ural. Notice the date that the bell really starts to form on the curve. I know there is a will and there is a way.

  9. Well, we can see that the Tories are doing quite some work on the environment portfolio, at least. What did the Librano$ ever do, except sign a piece of fecking useless paper called “Kyoto”, which has a holy-like status among many leftists, something they believe is a magical piece of paper.
I see no evidence that the Kyoto accord is of any worth whatsoever, other than to curry favor with stupid voters who’ll believe anything they’re told by liberals on the environment. A piece of paper never made the Liberals do jack crap for emissions, which increased significantly under their reign following Kyoto.
And it looks to me like the leftist politicians, activists and MSM have decided to use Rona Ambrose as their latest punching bag… even though they have no reason whatsoever to think she’s not working hard to make a difference. Shame on her detractors. They’re being purely political and anticonservative. I don’t think they even understand anything about “the environment”… they just parrot the words as told by their peers.

  10. Spot/identify the egregious/false statement by Reuters/MSM in the news excerpt below.
Fact: Bush did not pull the US out of Kyoto.

Here is the real story: “The Clinton Administration never submitted the protocol to the Senate for ratification.

On November 12, 1998, Vice President Al Gore symbolically signed the protocol.”

This flim-flam by Clinton/Gore has no legal/moral authority.
