Discussion in the comments of the magnet “ribbons” displayed all over the US prompted a reader to email privately with information on where you can get your own. (I had to look for one in North Dakota a couple of years ago).

A few places you can order them in Canada; Military Family Resource Centre Meaford and Royal Canadian Regiment Kit Shop, Or contact your local Royal Canadian Legion. A few private businesses also offer them – I would guess that if you’re interested in helping out by offering the magnetic ribbons at your own place of business, the Legion is the place to start. |
A small gesture, no question – but in a country where such displays are rare, I suspect they are appreciated.

I, for one, will be trying to get some of these ribbons. I am hopeful that having them on my 5 vehicles will inpress some others to do the same. No telling what a spark of support for our military will lead. I hope it will lead to more pride in who we are as Canadians, and more interest in all things “Canadian”…. well, maybe with a few exceptions… like the CBC, gun control laws, Gay marriage laws, GST, etc etc etc.
I’ve had one, a yellow ribbon with the words “support our troops” for a while now. Minus the French and the corporate logo.
If you live in Southern Alberta you can generally buy them in Montana. I bought mine at Scheels sporting goods in Great Falls.
KATE THANKS for posting the ribbon for me, this is a very worthy cause it not only shows support for our Canadian troops but also their families. I was also informed that some of the ribbons that are being distributed are now in camo. once again thanks to Kate & all that purchase & show pride in our troop’s.
Putting these on my two cars. Directly above my Mark Steyn bumper sticker:
Free Iraq: Done
Free Afghanistan: Done
How’s your Free Tibet campaign going?
Walmart in Yellowknife has them.
I bought a number of these ribbons from the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) at Edmonton Garrison. They have some very nice lapel pins as well. The MFRC is in an area accessible to the public.
Move these around on your vehicle every day or two so that the shape doesn’t mess with the paint job. This has happened to several people so this is what is suggested now.
Best to buy them where the money goes to support services etc.
Why does putting them in harm’s way and keeping them there equal “supporting the troops”?
And if we “honor their sacrifices” why do we want them to continue sacrificing without sacrifice for ourselves?
Steve – what is the purpose of a military? Their job is to go into harm’s way for us – and they sign up for it willingly. I support them in what they are doing.
I honour their sacrifice by stating my support for them; by prefering to have my tax money spent on equipping them properly.
I’m a 41 year old woman. What should I do, join the Canadian forces?
I honour what doctors, nurses, policemen and firemen do – should I go out and try to do what they do too?
My husband honours what women go through in childbirth. Should he try to emulate that too? (I’d like to see him try.)
Come on, don’t fall back on the simplistic argument that we should “walk the walk”. It isn’t realistic.
What is it..5 bucks for a pin?
And levant’s looking for $10,000 donors to bail his ass out?
I’d rather give money that hurts to vet support or the families. If I wasn’t for cutting and running.
the best way we can support our troops is to get them out of that hell hole. What is the purpose of our military? Well its not to waste lives in that armpit of a country. “Hey man thats no way to support our troops” well I say “Bugger Off” I have family in the military and I am damn proud of them but I don’t want that call in the middle of the night telling me that one of my family members has been killed in some dead end country for no good reason. “But man how will they ever learn any different” don’t care Afghanistan has been a black hole for hundreds of years, do I think our men and women are going to show them the light? Come on people give your head a shake. You want to support them call your MPP and ask them to bring them home, and stop them from being a sacrificial lamb for the american way of life
STW: Couldn’t agree with you more. We are completely wasting our time and lives over in that cesspool. And if people do want to show support for our troops, why hasn’t someone come up with a made-in-Canada solution, not something borrowed from the U.S.?
Stop the waste,
Your whole argument got blown with the last sentence: ‘sacrificial lamb for the american way of life.’
Your freudian-anti-american-slip is showing.
What way of life would be worth fighting for?
They can’t resist. The anti-american reflex rises from the inferiority complex. How colonial.
hey guy’s you are totally missing the point of the Ribbon. This is to show support for our men & woman & their families no matter where they are. What our prior government failed to do!. Our men & women sign up to serve & are very proud of it, they do not make the political decision’s as to where they will be posted around the world. The ribbon is not an item to show support for or against a decision made by the government, it is to show that we are proud of our MEN & WOMEN IN UNIFORM, SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN LACKING IN OUR COUNTRY FOR ALONG TIME.
Nothing wrong with supporting our troops, I just hoped we could have a made-in-Canada way of showing it. Sheesh.
Bryanr:
“it is to show that we are proud of our MEN & WOMEN IN UNIFORM, SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN LACKING IN OUR COUNTRY FOR ALONG TIME.”
Wouldn’t you say that we should try to change from feelings of “disgust and revulsion” or at best “apathy” as fostered by the left toward our military before we make that leap to “proud”.
As Kate said, it is a small gesture. And a scarce few ribbons also serve to highlight the general lack of support. I have always been suspicious of yellow ribbon campaigns; they smell of the token gesture.
The military won’t gain true, honest respect within the population until the government treats it as a seriously deadly military force and not a snow removal squad, the media stops implying “moronic baby-killer in a hopeless situation”, the schools stop preaching “Better dead than fight” and the population starts learning about our military history (the political interference, the mistakes, the failures and the victories.)
I am, of course, a cynic.
I cannot belive the wimpy arguements some of you write as to why we should ” get our troops out of that Hell hole”. It certainly is a good thing that Canadians didn’t put their heads in the sand when WW2 broke out. The war against the evils that breed in Afghanistan against Western democracies, is much closer to us, here in Canada, than Hitlers plan to take over Europe. What do you suggest we do??? What until these bastards strike a Canadian city? If you think we are not a target for these deranged killers, you are sadly mistaken.
I also am real tired to listening to the anti American B.S. that some keep bringing up with every topic on this and many other blogs. I am proud to be a Canadian. I do not agree with many things that Americans believe and do, but at the end of the day, I feel they are our closest friend. Americans have similar beliefs as we do. The average American is not evil. They are hard working, family oriented, freedom loving people. They are just like us, here in Canada, in more ways than they are not.
I hate war as much as anyone. It is scary stuff but I also believe it is sometimes a neccesary thing. If you value our freedoms you should also see that they are worth fighting for. Right now, the Moslem extremists are telling their followers to increase the number of children they have born. They are intrenching the purest form of hatred against anything that Western culture ( that includes us !!) believes in. They know full well that increasing their followers means that in another generation or two, they can win the war against the West. These dangerous people do not think of winning in the same time frames we do. They are willing to take over the Western world, by one birth at a time.
To those of you who feel that we should not be in Afghanistan, would you please tell me what kind of Canada you would like to see for your children and grandchildren? If you have any moral fortitude and any belief that the freedom we enjoy is worth defending, then maybe you can see that a messy thing like Canadians in Afghanstan is a worthwhile venture. I do not agree with many of you that say that everything the US does is to increase their control of world oil supplies. It could just be, that Americans maybe have a little clearer vision of what is at stake here.
It is my belief that the Moslem extremists have only just started their holy war against us. I do not like what I think the next few years will hold for us. The apathetic, hug- a terrorist crowd are dead wrong on this issue, and I for one are tired of hearing their half thought out logic.
Foobius:
I agree with you, we seem to fail in the education of our history of our forces, but canadian history in general. A prime example is the government & there recent year of the veteran. This only took 60yrs for them to reconize just the WWII veteran’s. I feel that there should be a national day of mourning, sure we gather at our local cenotaph’s on the 11th hour, the 11th day of the 11th month. But unfortantly this is not a Canada wide tradition, I believe we still have 3provinces that will not reconize the day as a day of mourning. As to the lefties I do not expect that I will ever see the day that they will show a little respect to the men & women past & presnt who served there country. They only show up at ceremonies because it is good photo op’s for them.
Both the Yellow and Green Camo ribbon magnets are available at the CANEX if you live close to any of the bases in Canada. The last time I checked the CANEX was selling them for 1$ and I believe the proceeds were going to the MFRC…
My husband brought a tonne home from work a few months back and I tend to keep a few in my truck to pass out if anyone asks where I got mine 😉
Death to all the leftwing pinko scum.
Its time for a little iron fisted cleanup.
Lets get the draft going.
STW; how do your enlisted family members and their immediate families feel about their mission?
F.Y.I.: ‘Worth The Fight’ by Licia Corbella in the Calgary Sun on March 28, great read. She was in Afghanistan in 2003. THIS is what it’s about.
http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Columnists/Corbella_Licia/2006/03/28/1508588.html
Ok rebuttal time. Chei my enlisted family members are very proud of what they do and what they stand for. But just because they are willing to lay down their lives does not mean that we should just use them as cannon fodder or political pawns and that is what I see happening. Sooz and JRB it was not a slip and your only half right. Americans as a people are great, their political leaders are on crack. If you don’t believe that the shit storm that is going on over there is not a direct result of american foreign policy you need a history lesson. Grant come on how can you compare this to WWII, not even close most of the natives dying over there are a result of us being there. You can’t tell me that we don’t have enough smart munitions that we can’t keep extremests in check without ever wasting a Canadian life. FREE “leftwing pinko scum” please you can do better then that. have you been watching american cold war films again. Foobus don’t worry, our current government will continue in the tradition, that is the the political interference, the mistakes, the failures. you see I am a cynic as well
still missing the point of the ribbon guys, it is not a political statement to a mission we may be on, it is to say that we as free Canadian’s believe & support our forces & their families. I cannot descibe the feeling I have on NOV.11th, when I march along side our veteran’s of past war’s, conflicts etc… this is my way of saying thanks, So basically guy’s & gal’s say thanks to a vet someday, regardless of their age & gender.
thanks again to the blog’s that have stated where they purchased the ribbon.
Actually bryanr (and STW); that was the point I was trying to get at. I do support the troops and their families no matter where, why. I would feel terrible however, if they felt like political pawns right now and are simply doing their duty. On the other hand, people like STW, and others who are so vocally against being in Afghanistan should ask themselves how that makes the troops and their families feel. If I had a husband or family memeber there, I wouldn’t need the added baggage of everyone arguing about it, undervaluing their sacrifices. A little sympathy and understanding goes a long way.
So STW, I would genuinely like to know if that is how your family members feel, duty bound and put upon? Or is that just you talking?
I see what your saying cheri, I was not realy syaing you, it’s the ones that no matter when, where or why that are always going to be against our forces, y’know one thing that i often think about is that I don’t remember anyone kicking up a real stink when we went into Bosnia. I could be wrong I just can’t remember that. I don’t know do you remember cheri?

OOOPP’S sorry about that spell check & I don’t know how I did that(repeat’s)
Jeez, I did not read this thread until this morning because I merely expected to find the usual scoundrels seeking refuge in patriotism, and here is STW trying to be reasonable by his lonesome!
Let me hasten to side with the “leftist pinko scum,” and state that the argument outlined by Grant in his post of 2:31 PM yesterday shows the kind of undemocratic (because immature) political gullibility I hate to see on this side of the border. Equating the war on terror with WWII is a gross, unhistorical distortion, and comparing “Moslem extremists” (or whatever derogatory term you want to use)with Hitler is pure Goebbelsque propaganda and beyond the pale of historical reflection.
If that’s what you need to justify a personal opinion, fill your boots, but do support the troops by leaving them out of your world view. Being on operations is hard enough without having to wake up dead for the wrong reasons.
Accept the fact that foreign policy and not ideology or theology is involved, and be grateful to the troops for serving our national interests. Support them even further and work on our politicians to redefine victory (and troop repatriation) as something short of leaving a blooming (but poppyless,) united, democratic, modern and prosperous Afghanistan. We only have so many troops, Afghanistan is not a tourist destination, and there are only so many six-month rotations they will put up with.
No I don’t recall Bryan. I guess the media didn’t care to tell us how to think. That’s what it seems to boil down to, is them telling us how to feel, how REAL Canadians feel. Considering they have the monopoly, their ideals control the agenda, it might appear to an outsider that the whole Country’s on their band wagon. That’s why support for the troops, their families and their mission is so important whether you are for or against. They don’t need to feel unappreciated and defensive. They believe what they are doing is the right thing and who is to say that doesn’t deserve the utmost of respect? They aren’t picking the battles, they just choose to put their lives on the line when called to serve, whether in defense of our Country or another.
I went into the 179 Legion on Commercial Drive in Vancouver and no one new anything about these. When I asked the girl behind the bar she gave me a “what a disgusting idea” look. If these are the people hanging out in the Legions now I am very glad I no longer am a member. How sad.
CHERI— could’nt have said it better
Free– Iam saddened to here that you had a bad exp. at the branch, unfortantly there are some branches that have gone that way in order to survive & they have lost all concept of what we stand for. However don’t give up on the legion, maybe try another(call to see if they have them). I would even send a memo to the B.C Command on their attitude of that certain br. As I stated before their maybe a lot that were not contacted for the ribbon’s because of proximity to a base, try the link’s & contact one of them maybe they can direct you as to where they me found in your area, Meaford or RCR kit shop most likely best to try.
…isn’t the french verse (ribbon side) suppose to be larger than the english one?
Isn’t that what our boy’s are over there fighting for? Adscam and Bilingualism?
