Stockwell Day is considering a U.S.-style armed border patrol to stop “bad guys” getting into Canada.
Leave aside the use of snickering scare quotes around “bad guys” for a moment – what does this first sentence suggest? That Day is consulting with American Homeland Security? Sending our border guards to training camps in Idaho? After all, many nations employ armed border patrols – indeed, such patrols have existed in Canada in the past. So, let’s see what Mr. Gordon means by “US-style”;
The newly appointed Public Safety Minister has solicited proposals to bring an armed presence to the border.
Soliciting proposals? That’s “US-style”? And here I thought we were getting Blackhawk helicopters..
For those who were tearing your hair and pounding the keys after the cabinet appointments – here’s a reminder that most Canadians have tuned out the media echo chamber. In fact, pull 20 Canadians off the street and ask them to name a cabinet minister – and I’ll bet 19 couldn’t.

Armed border guards–in Canada? Horrors! Now would someone explain why this is a bad thing? Are we supposed to allow the scum of the earth into Canada with a smile and a handshake instead? It is long past due that we make sure that our borders are secure–maybe then we will be on the way to having a secure country. After all, we have gotten rid of the ‘godfather Liberals’, no it is time to clean up the rest of the country. Has anyone been following the story of possible charges steming from RCMP investigations post-Gomery?
What I’d like to know is if any charges will be laid under the Elections Act. Specifically those sections where the penalty is that the political party guilty of breeching same is deregistered and has all assets seized.
After all I can’t see how the LPC can truly rebuild its party unless it tears down the condemned party structure first. I think of this as helping them “out”.
If it hasn�t been tried in the US it probably doesn�t exist. In other words, it�s difficult to come up with an ideology or concept that can�t be referred to as �US-style�. That�s because in the US there are almost 300 million people driving the most advanced economic engine the world has ever seen. They have tried everything at least once. It�s therefore easy to call anything you don�t like �US-style� because it no doubt exists somewhere in the US.
Thus the liberal-left and it�s propaganda MSM machines can always sneer that any concept that they don�t like is �US-Style� and therefore must be bad for Canadians. It�s a powerful propaganda tool they use and conservatives need to figure out how to counter it.
And no doubt the Conservative government will have to deal with a “US style” left-wing MSM that’s hostile to any non-left-wing government, politician or proposed policy.
And it’s probably a safe assumption that the more effective Prime Minister Harper is, the more the left-wing MSM will hate him, just like the “US style” MSM hatred of Bush.

Canwest’s James Gordon is obviously not a Stockwell Day fan in using “U.S. style armed border patrol to stop “bad guys” getting into Canada”. Though “bad guys” was apparently Day’s terminology, the question remains what would Gordon consider Canadian-style?
He also states
“In June, 1985, 329 people died when Air India Flight 182 from Vancouver crashed off the coast of Ireland.” Crashed? It was blown out of the sky! With mostly Canadians on board!
Having lived in Europe for four years and during that time I traveled throughout Europe. I can say that Canada is the only country that I visited that did not have armed border guards. It�s just not that we have no armed border guards; there is almost no armed presence at our international airports. This is contrast to Europe (and most other countries I�m sure), you will see armed policemen all over the place, especially after 9/11.

“KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — Two more Canadian soldiers are in Germany for medical treatment.
The two soldiers landed in Landstuhl, Germany early Friday morning, said Capt. Mark Peebles.
Peebles said the soldiers were evacuated to undergo precautionary tests at the U.S.-run Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre.
“They’re at Landstuhl to go on with further diagnostic testing with the machines that we just don’t have here,” he said.
The pair were riding in an armoured vehicle Thursday when it was struck by a Canadian truck. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, although one soldier’s wounds are considered serious.
“It’s certainly serious and we’re taking all precautions to (find out) exactly what the nature of his injuries are. That said, his life is not in danger,” said Peebles.
It was the second road accident in two days for Canadian soldiers who recently arrived in Kandahar for Canada’s beefed-up combat mission.
A third Canadian soldier injured in the first accident Wednesday is also being treated in Germany. No names have been released.”
NOTE: That would mean that American helicoter crews flew the wounded Canadians to an American field hospital in Afghanistan where American doctors treated them; then, American pilots and flight surgeons flew them to Germany on a US Air Force C-17; now, American doctors and medical staff are treating them in the US Army Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl.
I’m only writing this so our Canadian friends and allies are well aware that Americans are being good allies, and doing what allies do for each other, standing shoulder-to-shoulder.
And, like all Canadians and Americans, those brave soldiers and their families are in my thoughts and prayers, for a speedy and full recovery.

Is it just me, or is it possible that there are enough intelligent/informed Canadians out there that this will bounce back on the MSM.
I would be interested to know how many of the 100’s of nations on this planet that DON’T have an armed border service. I know every country I’ve traveled to(besides Canada), takes their border security seriously enough to arm their border guards.
The usual hype about the Chinese threat from Gertz. China’s nuclear-powered ballistic submarine fleet consists of a single, not fully operational sub; plus, the Jianggzhuang sub base was built in the 1970s, under Mao: some evidence of a ‘buildup.’
China has a small fraction of the nuclear weapons of the US: it’s more than a little hypocritical for Pentagon officials to be complaining about China’s ‘misleading’ them about their military activities, particularly when the US is pushing Taiwan (against the will of its elected legislature) to push through the single largest military purchase in its history.

Semantics are a wonderful thing. It seems to me that if PMSH and the ministers in his cabinet were to insert the words “Made in Canada” into every policy announcement, this “US Style” drum beating would go away.
For example, we could have
A “made in Canada” solution to border security. Or a “Made in Canada” plan to reducing wait times by introducing a mix of private and public. It is all a matter of presentation and Semantics. Words are powerful tools if used properly.

Lots of people have feared China over the past 3,000 years. But despite being arguably the greatest and certainly the oldest superpower in history the dreaded attempt at world domination never comes.
I’d doubt they want to start trouble. They Chinese governments hold on power is more tenous than you might think. China averages 1500-2000 riots a year. And by riots I don’t mean a bunch of muslims yelling “rat face” we’re talking about police losing control of decent sized towns for days at a time.
The point of Kate’s post would seem to me to be, not that conservatives can get away with stuff because Canadians are not interested, but that Canadians tune out stuff in the MSM that they hear over and over and over and over and over again. It’s like skunks. They don’t smell themselves.
The MSM beat the Emerson, Fortier drum to death and they will continue to because they are going to drum anything to death that is negative about the new government.
Kate did not defend PMSH on this. Many conservatives bemoaned it as poorly conceived and also as needless cannon fodder for the press. However, it is done, fini. AND it was not illegal or unprecedented. So let’s get on with it. Every time Emerson’s name is mentioned, Canadian’s eyes will glaze over and tune it out.

Kate’s media link is an almost entirely dead-as-dust presentation of survey results. The only extrapolation from the data is in the penultimate sentence discussing the NDP, and possibly the prior one hypothesizing about the dip in Liberal support.
Nowhere is there a mention of corruption or not paying attention. The former is John�s presumption and the latter is a misrepresentation of Kate�s led to the article. Kate points out two things: (1) people are increasingly tuning out the media�therefore the media is losing its ability to influence the public (this is her central point); (2) most people don�t know who the ministers are�because they have other priorities; this is their right. Live with it, or go riot/rant with the barbarians�
Small words now: the problem with the Emerson/Fortier appointments is in the heads of a small noisy bunch (many conservatives included). Our system of government allows it, and our prime minister has never flat-out said he would not do it. No law has been broken and there is plenty of precedent (Winston Churchill � twice).
Grow up and pay attention to something more important. This whinging is disproportionate to actual events. Get a dictionary and look up the meaning the words you use. The indiscriminate and manipulative misuse of pejorative terminology (corrupt, hypocrite) betrays either dishonesty or stupidity. If you must, at least TRY and be amusing about it.
Just so’s ya know, a study was done by some junkies inside the Pentagon and at the British Admiralty about 3 years ago, highlights of which were quoted in an article by the Economist, which stated that if China were to apply 50% of its GDP to arms build-up, it would take 35 years just to catch up to current American military technology.
So I don’t think we need to sweat them to much. I think it’s something like 1 ICBM to every 90 the Yanks have. America could actually survive a nuke show with China. China… not so much.
Also, the Chinese do not start wars… they finish them, but they generally don’t start them. If you look at the history of China, you’ll notice they’ve never gotten into a fight unless they perceived themselves threatened, or they perceived the parcel of land being fought over as part of China.
Tibet, Korea, you name it, these are places the Chinese consider Chinese, which is why they are there, or have been there.
Right or wrong doesn’t really play in to it in their minds, they will attack anyone who approachs something they consider theirs, or too close to something that is theirs aka Korea.
