It didn’t take long for Michaelle Jean to pick up where Queen Adrienne left off.
When punditry were speculating post election that Harper would wait several months before doing anything substantive in government,it was a sign that they don’t know very much about Harper. Or Albertans. Or Western Canadian conservatives, for that matter.
(Which should come as no surprise – I understand that over the weekend Jane Taber inadvertantly revealed on National TV she hadn’t actually read the Conservative Party platform. Journalism. In Canada.).

G.G.’s expenses almost irrelevant. What STILL concerns me is her refusal to say how she voted in the Quebec referendum. The hypocrisy of it all. This just underscores it is all.
Cheri,
The “Queen Hottie” wants you to figure her expenses don’t matter. That way she can spend like money was water.

ET? Regarding this?
Truth Seeker – I’m not sure of your point, in suggesting that the 9/11 was a ‘hoax’. Steel may melt at approx 1300 C/2500F. But, it loses 50% of its structural strength and sags at the mere heat of 550C..which is 1022F…far less than the heat of the airplane fuel oil.It happened; it’s not a conspiracy of the Bush gov’t! Posted by ET
Thank you.
I have been a weldor, arc & acetelyne, for nearly forty years, and I can tell you that once common structural steel is heated more than a few hundred ( let alone a thousand or two ) degrees farenheit, it loses much of its strength.
Those floors were attached to the uprights with brackets, and when they got hot, they failed, the first floor to drop hammered the one below, and so on. Simple cascade effect.
That aside, we’ve all seen the controlled demolition “drops” of big buildings- does anyone really believe all those hundreds, nay, thousands of cutting charges required could be placed, and then wired together, without anyone noticing?
JoeCalgary: “In fact, the Muslim faith co-existed quite happily with the Jewish and Christian faiths right up to the crusades.”
No fact at all. How did the Muslims come to be in Jerusalem, along with what are now Egypt, Israel/Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria? These were the Christian heartland of the Eastern Roman Empire until conquered by Arab Muslims between 632 and 641 AD. To this day this area remains largely Muslim and under Muslim rule. The goal–successfully achieved–of the First Crusade was simply to regain Jerusalem for Christendom from Muslim rule.
Spain was conquered by Muslims in the early eighth century and not completely reconquered by Christians until 1492–a much longer period of time than the Christian Crusaders’ rule (1098 to 1291) in a very small geographic area of the middle east.
And what about the Christian Balkans? These were conquered by the Muslim Ottoman Turks from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries and mostly remained under their rule until the nineteenth century. The Turks beseiged Vienna as late as 1683.
Hardly consistent with “Even up to 100 years ago they [Muslims] were still relatively peaceful towards the west.”
Indeed in all the Muslim conquests “they weren’t killing people out of spite”, they were killing them to gain territory for Islam. Is that a motive you accept? And how is that motive different from the Crusades–historically a much more minor episode? Why do the Muslims so fixate on the Crusades, when we in the West seem for all practical purposes to have gotten over the Muslim invasions and apologize for the Crusades instead?
“We, as in the western controlled UN, carve a friggin nation out of the middle of Palestine, which just happens to have the most significant religious site in the Muslim world dead smack in the middle of it…”
I think you forgot Mecca and Medina, actually numbers one and two respectively on the significance rank.

How did Iran get nuclear technology? Who sold them their first reactor? Thankfully, it wasn’t Canada.

And an excellent column by John Robson in the Montreal Gazette, Jan. 28:
http://www.thejohnrobson.com/columns/2006/060128%20Gazette.htm
Excerpts:
‘Hamass victory was not just the product of Fatahs failures. It was also the product of its success. Sophisticated people have also quietly acquiesced in the poisoning of the minds of two generations of Palestinians by the PLO/PA propaganda machine. But glorifying violence and raw anti-Semitism logically leads to voting for Hamas.
Meanwhile, the notion that Hamas can be domesticated by contact with sophisticated people is as preposterous as it is widespread. The Daily Telegraph editorialized on Friday that in practical terms there is much to be said for engaging with Hamas, in the hope of steering it toward the renunciation of violence. And a news story in yesterdays Ottawa Citizen said Hamass landslide victory might force it to take clearer positions on key issues.
Really? Yesterdays Post says the Hamas charter includes this: Initiatives and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences are in contradiction to the principles of Hamas. There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through jihad. Also: After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. Their plan is embodied in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. These statements are open to reproach on a number of grounds, but lack of clarity isnt one of them.
In any case, as Barry Rubin of the GLORIA Centre has noted, the theory that power moderates fanatics is poorly supported by history. It didnt happen to Lenin, Hitler, Mao or Pol Pot. Nor, crucially, Arafat. He never renounced terror or cleaned up his administration. Instead, he lied to sophisticated people who then lied to us…
…where do we go from here? As a long-run strategic matter, if Israels neighbours remain hostile and its supporters lukewarm, wobbly and in demographic decline, sooner or later a fatal mistake will mean a second genocide. (Europes sophisticated diplomatic response to Irans nuclear ambitions might have made later a moot point.)..’

Mark, your absolutely right, except some of your dates are wrong. However, I’m not suggesting the Muslims were saints… but there is a difference between warring for expansion, and warring for pillage.
The Christians definately fell on the “pillage and rape” side. Muslims were a tolerant people for the most part, and as long as you didn’t fuck with them, they generally didn’t fuck with you. Other than to rule of course. Given the times, I don’t hold conquering against them.
My principle point is, they will never trust us. Doesn’t change a thing in relation to who did what to who. It is a trueism that we were, and are, the more technically sophisticated. By we I mean the west, specifically Germany, France, Britain and America. The Spanish and the Portuguese, the Dutch, the Italians… at one point or another, it’s always someone from a predominantly caucasian nation, screwing someone who isn’t.
Lets face it, the one thing Nordic nations do best is build weapons. The entire history of the west is rife with how well we build guns and bombs. More to the point, how well we have used other nations because we do one thing better than the rest of the world, namely blow shit up.
We can’t get away from this. We fucked the Middle East, we fucked the Asians, we still fuck the South Americans, and we are still actively fucking the Africans. What we didn’t screw with, the Russians and the Japanese screwed with.
We can debate which is the worse religion all day long.
What we cannot debate is the way Arab fanatism is in no small way built on Western domination of their society. They use it against us, and we feed them even more to use.
We can hand out all the aid we want, we can beg forgiveness, we can try to save them from themselves, stop wars, do peacekeeping duty, it doesn’t amount to a hill of beans.
They will continue to try and kill us until we get out of the Middle East. Right now they use AK-47′ and Stinger’s. Let them get a hold of a Nuke, and they will use that in as utilitarian a fashion as the rifles and rockets.
Nope, the only answer is to pull-out, and try to clean up some of the mess on the way out the door. After that, lock them in and let them beat the shit out of themselves until they form a semblence of sane government that works for them.
You cannot impose democracy… people have to want to have it. People have to know what the hell it is before they can achieve it. That’s the big lie.
It’s wonderful to try and create a democratic society, it’s another thing altogether to make it stick.
In the meantime, let them live in the desert, sell us their oil, and leave them alone to figure it out. They still need the rest of the world, and in order for their society to eliminate fanatic’s, we have to stop going to them, and make them come to us.
Protect Israel by all means, keep the Saudi’and Kuwait safe, but get out of Iraq, get rid of the rulers in Iran, take the legs out of the Syrian government, and then stand back and watch the show.
People alway’s do the right thing in the end, doesn’t matter what religion. They still have to eat, they still want roofs over their heads etc… as long as we are in the picture, it distracts them from what they really need to be doing.
Yes, I understand that people like the Taliban might rise up there again, but history show’s us that sooner or later, despots fall, dictators hang, and tyrant’s end up on small islands. We are not going to stop that cycle from occuring in these nations, and our active involvement only makes the process harder to achieve.
People alway’s suffer, we can’t change that yet. Until we can, we need to back off.
Judging Google

So Google is cooperating with the Chinese, and there’s been a firestorm of criticism. The Times of London observes:
Until now, Chinese net users who were blocked from accessing a site knew that the information was there and was being kept from them by their own government. From now on it is Google which will be keeping data from them, in direct contradiction of its own declared mission to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
The reaction to Google’s move has been highly critical. The watchdog organisation Reporters Without Borders called it a black day for freedom of expression in China, adding that Google’s statements about respecting online privacy are the height of hypocrisy in view of its strategy in China. It seemed that the company’s real motto was something more along the lines of don’t be evil unless the Chinese government asks you to and there’s serious money in it.
In taking this approach, Google doesn’t distinguish itself much from other big American companies — Microsoft, Cisco, Yahoo!, etc. — that have cooperated with the Chinese. (Arguably, its behavior here is somewhat “less evil.”) It’s a big market, offering over a billion customers, and the Chinese government itself is a big purchaser. Why make them mad? How many people, besides a few human-rights types, will care that according to the Chinese Google, that Tiananmen Square never happened? And how much money do they spend on IT?
There’s also a not-entirely-bogus counterargument, that Chinese citizens with access to a censored Google are still more powerful, relative to their government, than Chinese citizens with no Google at all. Though this claim seems a bit, er, convenient, it may still have a grain of truth to it…….[more] >>>

If abolishing the monarchy (which is not a Canadian institution in any case) would make Canada less Canadian, then this country is truly in a sad state.
Your lack of knowledge of out history is evident. The Crown has been integral to our existence and how different we are than the US since the begiining, The Mother of Confedaration was HLIM Queen Victoria. THe Crown is embedded in our Constitution. It would take unanimous consent of both upper and lower hoyse and all ten provinces to change it. I doubt any politician would even try.
Hi all,
Now that Harper has been elected, I want him to send a bold message to the elites of this country by requiring the Governor General to pay taxes—just as the Queen now does. Harper brought it up a few years ago but the Liberals under Chretien looked as if they got a chicken bone stuck in their throats at the mere mention of such a thing. But why should the Governor General be exempt from paying taxes anyway, it’s not like the position is important. Or is it?

Re: GG Michalle the Hottie I
While I am all in favour of rounding on lefties, Liberals and other such riff-raff, it is only fair to do so when the evidence for their turpitude is clear.
According to this news report, it seems that the piddling away of our money was mostly the work of Pooter Paulie, ex-PM, or some of his lick spittle lackies:
Jack Aubry, The Ottawa Citizen
Published: Tuesday, January 31, 2006
Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean’s secret two-night stay at the Chateau Laurier in August 2005,just before Prime Minister Paul Martin announced her surprise appointment, cost taxpayers $7,750, documents obtained through the Access to Information Act reveal.
Determined to keep Ms. Jean, her husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond and daughter,Marie-Eden, out of sight of regular patrons at the hotel, officials at the Privy Council Office put them up in one of the Chateau’s swanky presidential suites, at a cost of $1,800 a night, while staging day-long briefing sessions in nearby rooms on the eve of the Aug. 4 announcement by Mr. Martin.

She may yet produce some foolishness in her own right, early days yet and all that, but this one isn’t her’s.
With respect to how she has voted in the past, well that is her business. The confederation may not be the soundest or best run of all the states on the planet, but so far the privacy of the ballot box remains on the books.
Kate, excellent stuff. Your CBC roundtable columns were especially good. Blog on !

Commentary
Zombietime’s coverage of the Save Tookie Williams demonstrations features a couple of leftist girls doing a sacramental song and dance they somehow felt appropriate to the occasion of the execution. The words went like this: “We use these hands to touch our clits; we like to come, that’s no shit!” No shit, Sherlock. Those of us who are used to leftist ritual, whether they be invitations to listen the Vagina Monologues, offers to sniff at the sacred Chocolate Factory or worship at the altar of infant sacrifice; we the people who have become inured to Robert Mapplethorpe and Piss Christ have come to accept the existence of evil as the necessary consequence of freedom.
And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food;
the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
But with that acceptance comes the unceasing struggle to stand on the side of angels when one might cross to the devils. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom in more ways than one, and its principal battlefield is the human heart. We can tolerate the presence of evil in our midst only if we are prepared to cleave to the good. There was a time this foolish and ugly religion of the Left could have been laughed to scorn; but no longer. We have our Garden still, though we can hardly see it for the weeds.

“Danish humour may be no laughing matter, but it must be defended”, Daily Telegraph, Feb. 1, by Stephen Pollard, a senior fellow at the Centre for the New Europe, in Brussels:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2006/02/01/do0102.xml&sSheet=/opinion/2006/02/01/ixop.html
Excerpts:
‘…although it might be unexpected that a series of Danish cartoons have caused the worst flare-up of Muslim intolerance of free speech since the fatwa against Salman Rushdie, on another level it is astonishing that such a conflagration has not happened before.
On Monday, the Danish flag was burnt across the Middle East in a series of demonstrations that are increasing in intensity with each passing hour. The Saudi and Libyan ambassadors have been withdrawn from Copenhagen. A full-scale boycott of Danish goods is under way. One Danish company, Arla Foods, which sells $430 million of goods a year in the Middle East, reports a total boycott.
The cause of this tribulation is a series of 12 cartoons published last September in the Danish newspaper Jyllends-Posten. They are not very funny. In one, Mohammed cries out to dead suicide bombers waiting to be admitted to paradise: “Stop, stop! We ran out of virgins”. Another has him wearing a bomb as a turban…
…Offensive and unfunny though they might be, they none the less raise legitimate points about the beliefs and behaviour of some Muslims. Is there, for instance, any non-Muslim who does not find the notion of the 76 virgins who await suicide bombers to be both horrifying and amusing?
If free speech means anything, it surely includes the ability to question, and to mock, the belief that Mohammed rewards jihadists…
Europe is not part of the Caliphate, whatever some Muslims wish. One of the defining qualities of Western civilisation is that, while religions of all kinds are tolerated, their beliefs and practices must be subject to secular laws. The idea that any religion should be above those laws is anathema to Western civilisation…’

Mark Collins,
“Why do the Muslims so fixate on the Crusades, when we in the West seem for all practical purposes to have gotten over the Muslim invasions and apologize for the Crusades instead?”
Historicaly the Muslims haven’t cared that much about the crusades. A few contemporary Islamists in a twist over growing western cultural influence have dredged it up. But otherwise its been a dead issue.
Re: Muslims in Spain. They invaded Spain at the invitation of a Spanish lord who was trying to oust the visigoths. The lord was expecting the moors to rape, pillage and leave but the invaders liked Spain so much that they decided to stay for eight hundred years.
Most of the wars between Christians and Muslims back in the day were really about money. Remember everyone claimed “god is on our side” back in those days even when waging war for the most crass reasons.
Roy Eappen “Your lack of knowledge of out history is evident. The Crown has been integral to our existence…”
The royal family serve as an interesting case study in the dangers of inbreeding. Other than that they’re a pack of complete tossers. I live in England and I can comfortably say that in any pub in town. You on the other hand would get laughed at if you made a comment like that.
“You on the other hand would get laughed at if you made a comment like that [tosser].”
