You can be forgiven for finding it hard to keep them all straight… Michael Geist on the emerging Sarmite Bulte fundraiser story;
The problem with the fundraiser is not that the President of CRIA is a host and that his partner is providing the entertainment. The problem is that the Parliamentary Secretary for Canadian Heritage, the former chair of the Canadian Heritage Standing Committee, the chair of the Ontario Liberal caucus, and the key player in the Bulte Report should not be having any fundraisers with any copyright stakeholders four days before a national election. The perception is that this is pure influence peddling, a perspective that is only fuelled by Bulte’s appearance at the head table at CRIA’s National Press Club event in the fall, of Bulte and Graham Henderson together in Washington, DC in September, etc.
Via Bourque, who’s been doing a bang up job lately.
More here and background at Boing Boing.

Ottawa-Centre candidate and Martin bagboy Richard Mahoney has also received a lot of money from the Canadian film industry, including money from Knight Enterprises, a company which produces many FoodTV shows. He also gets money from Alliance Atlantis and Shaw Communications.
But then again, he lobbied for them over the years, so I guess it’s time for payback. Or maybe he’ll be a better lobbyist for them as an MP.
Which begs the question, in both the case of Sarmite Bulte and Richard Mahoney. Are they running to represent their constituents, or to represent some industry that paid for their election campaign?
I hope the Ottawa Citizen is listening…
Another point about Bulte being a future Canadian Heritage Minister – I guess the Liberals and the industry have written off Liza Frulla already. Liza Frulla is the current Canadian Heritage Minister, and is running this election.
Where’s the Anti-Americanism when you need it. The MSM and the hand-fed arts community in this country lead the charge for “Canadian culture” but roll over like an old wh*re for an American dollar.
I think somebody should put together some sort of chart, so we can keep track of all the Liberal scandals surfacing.
It’d be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic. This is getting bloody rediculous.
Bulte is my MP – she beat out Peggy Nash, the NDP candidate in the last election, by a narrow margin, and may win again this time. The CPC candidate in the riding doesn’t stand a chance, but Tories in the riding are hoping he can pull just enough votes away from Bulte to end her incumbency.
That’s what it’s come to in the riding of High Park/Parkdale – conservatives hoping that the NDP candidate wins just to spite the Liberal incumbent. Sorta sad.
Don’t give up on the Tories in the Parkdale-High Park riding yet. Nothing like a local scandal to liven things up.
You can be sure someone will ask Bulte about this flagrant conflict of interest at upcoming all-candidates meetings.
Parkdale-High Park is now up for grabs.
ho hum…another Liberal…bought and paid for.
Tell me somethng new…
January 23 can’t come too soon for me.
I too used to live in the riding of Parkdale-Highpark. You could count on one hand the number of times SB showed her face. She was a parachute job if i remember at one time….that riding is full of hardcore comrades and Lieberals.I remember last election at the highschool where we voted, NDP members discussing their strategy to block the conservative candidate, quite openly….

We employ him not for his connections to the Liberal party,” says Deanna Allen, the CWB’s vice-president of farmer relations and public affairs.
And the Wheat Board continues its slow-burn war on Conservative-voting farmers.
The incompetence of Ralph Goodale that set the fiasco in motion.
Goodale says “I have investigated myself and cleared myself of any wrong doing.”
Alfonso Gagliano said “Asked about his relationship with Agostino Cuntrera, Gagliano said: ‘Mr Cuntrera is an acquaintance. We both come from Siculiana. I met him during a engagement in a church. He came to me in the 1970’s when he wanted me as his bookkeeper for his restaurant.’
Goodale say “one or two other senior people outside the party” were involved in the decision-making process on the income trust announcement. Which is it: one or two? If he’s not sure about that, how can he be sure of anything?
Maybe the second person was “the real boss”? “if you talk to much, you will die”

Yeah, um, Steve.
Klufas (the candidate there) has no chance. The fact that this is a difficult riding to win obviously has a lot to do with it. But when the candidate was most famous for not showing up at all-candidates meetings, and very poorly answering questions he did show up at, yeah.
If there was a competent Tory candidate here, then maybe….. but until then, no.
It pains me to say that as someone who lives here. Until then, go Peggy! Sigh.
dont know the best place to post this , but can anyone explain how NFLD and Labrador have average seat sizes of about 75000, (labrador is 25000) with no riding over 89000, when the rest of the country has sizes of about 105000???, Nfld population has been essentially the same for about 30 years so several redistributions have come and gone.I know PEI had a 4 seat minimum written in . but most all seats in the great handout provinces are permanantly on the palmup handshake end of the equalization and always Liberal.
So while you guys are going on about “another liberal bought and paid for,” I’m sure you’re all over your own Oda, who’s guilty of the same thing, right? Right?
Oh, wait, sorry. I forgot how blind PCs are to their own scandals. Not saying what Bulte did was okay; I think she should be hammered over this. I’m just saying.
I’ve been watching Sam Bulte and the riding of Parkdale–High Park for a while on Digital Copyright Canada. As an independent Canadian creator I believe that views like those held by Bulte, not copyright infringement, is the greatest threat to Canadian creators and innovators.
To the “anonymous” poster:
While Bev Oda has connections to broadcasters, she is still willing to meet with people with a wider variety of views.
Note: I’m not a Liberal or Conservative party partisan, or have close ties to any party. I just believe that the views of Bulte are the most dangerous for Canadian creativity.
Our Ridings of Interest page lists past MPs for the Liberals, Conservatives and NDP (We had no interaction with Bloc members for various reasons). While we have endorsed a few NDP candidates, it is not because we are partisan but because these specific people are most qualified in Digital Copyright issues.
