I’m still encountering a lot of difficulty getting online with my regular machine. I also have a shop day scheduled for most of tomorrow, so use this post for any finds or trackbacks to your own stuff until things are up to speed here. Hopefully, by the time I’m done in the booth, this “two hour disruption” will be over with.
A reminder to those of you who make it a habit – try to confine your link dumps to these Reader Tip threads and keep other posts free of them unless they are at least tangentially on topic. And keep quoting brief. A paragraph or two- no more. Some of you are easily exceeding copyright “fair use” exemptions.

We’ll beat anyone else’s price on tar and feathers.”), aboard Holland America Line’s newest ship, the Westerdam….I don’t know about you, but setting sail with a bunch of cranky right-wingers in black socks and sandals, their blindingly white legs on display for all to see, is not my idea of a good time. To be honest, a cruise with a boatload of like-minded lefties would have as little appeal…

  14. A link on nealsnews.com takes us to the story that divulges Hussein going along with a plan with the Coalition that he would agree to Exile to the Emerits instead of war. 21 Arab leaders said NO, and would rather fight it out.
    So 21 Arab leaders could have prevented the invasion, but did not.
    Now not only did the Arabs lose the war, but poor Hussein, not qualifying as a Martre, will have to go to hell, no 70 Virgins for this guy, and on top of that no legacy in the Arab History books, only that as one big Arab NERD!
    It will be interesting to see how the Arabs spin this, they lie as good if not better than the Librnano$.
    I can see Hussein being led out of the court room, knowing his sex life is finished forever and the Arabs that voted NO EXILE will still be treated Royally with all their high priced prostitutes, luxury cars, big red carpet feasts, and all Hussein gets is a rope around his neck.     OTTAWA — To find out how long it’s been since The Globe and Mail published its first story on the sponsorship program, think back to the last time you heard the phrase “Y2K.”
    The initial article appeared on Dec. 31, 1999, on the eve of the dreaded computer-age apocalypse that never was. Suffice it to say the story about Ottawa’s decision to spend $325,000 to rent a hot-air balloon in the shape of a Mountie on a horse — in the name of national unity — didn’t make many waves as the world welcomed in the year 2000.
    One thing led to another, however, and that first peek at one of Ottawa’s wackiest programs ever was followed by a marathon of more than 700 stories, columns, editorials and letters to the editor, culminating tomorrow with the release of the first report of the Gomery inquiry.

    Allegations of misspending came to light only in 2001 when The Globe revealed that internal auditors at Public Works Canada had identified a pattern of misspending in favour of Liberal-friendly advertising firms.
    By then, Globe reporters were going through mounds of paper obtained through the Access to Information Act, pointing out in various stories that advertising executives and their family members had been benefiting from the program for years, that the ad agencies that benefited from the program were big donors to the Liberal Party and that the government broke its own rules in steering multimillion-dollar contracts to them.
    The big break came in March, 2002, when The Globe was told that for one of its Access to Information requests, there was no paper on file. For the first time, there was a clear sense that the newspaper had found a case of potential fraud, because no one at Public Works or Groupaction could explain why the government had paid $550,000 for a report that couldn’t be found.

    YET THERE ARE TONS OF PEOPLE LIVING LIKE PIGS IN POVERTY, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT THEY CHOOSE!!!!
    Even though almost anyone who really wants to be rich, can be, most choose not to do what is required. They settle for a workaday life instead.
    That said … nearly anyone who really wants to can be dirt poor if they choose to and since life is indeed, a series of choices … it’s safe to assume that humans like water, seek their own level. Some simply choose to live in poverty … some don’t.
    Those who are in poverty against their will are probably living in a Muslim country or perhaps South East Asian pismire colony … or they are just too stupid to pull it off.

  21. I was surprised to see that Ann Rice of vampire novel fame has reconnected with her Roman Catholic roots. She now says she will spend the rest of her life writing about Christianity.
    She started off writing erotic novels that an acquaintance tells me were all about S&M. In fact one of the books features a dominatrix as the central character.
    So now after essentially being the main creative force behind the vampire portion of the Gothic movement and spending decades and volumes in this dark and violent fantasy world, she is going to bless everyone with novels only about Jesus.
    In light of her S&M origins, I guess we can only hope she doesn’t turn her attention to the Passion…

    Call it the Calgary Underground. After a month of watching more than $23-billion evaporate from their market value, Canada’s income trusts are fighting back. The movement began last week when dozens of trust executives were summoned to a private meeting in the wine cellar of a downtown restaurant in the nation’s energy capital.
    Speaking to representatives from 33 income trusts, an executive with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. delivered a sober warning to the hastily assembled group. In the battle being waged with Ottawa over the future of the income trust sector, the trusts were losing ground.
    Finance Minister Ralph Goodale’s decision to freeze advance tax rulings for trust conversions while Ottawa considers how it taxes the industry has left the sector mired in uncertainty. Income trusts, which are wildly popular with investors because they pass their cash flow to unitholders, were now under siege.
    The message to the trusts was clear: Backroom lobbying in Ottawa was no longer enough. It was time for trust executives to start speaking out, mobilize their unitholders and generally become a bigger thorn in the federal government’s side. The wine cellar meeting was described as a “wake-up call” by one executive in attendance who asked not to be identified.

    all of Ann Rice’s sex/S&M novels were written before she started to write about vampires. She wrote under a pen name that at the moment escapes my mind. I saw a couple of them in the bookstore the other day.

  33. I want to know more about the CPP. Who is on the CPP Investement Board, how many of them are current or former Liberals, and how much money has gone missing? I think it is time for a serious audit of everything the Liberal party could possibly have had access too. I find it highly unlikely that the huge pool of money that is the CPP could have escaped Liberal notice. Maybe Angry could do some digging?
