A curious item in Business Executive from an address by mafia expert Antonio Nicaso to the Canadian Club in Hamilton;
Nicaso said there is no political commitment to fight organized crime in Canada.
“When I arrived in Canada, it was like arriving in a candy store, because they were all here,” said Nicaso, who has written several books on the subject and is best known for publishing for the first time the ‘Mafia’s Code.’
Nicaso said Canadians are too concerned with avoiding the cost of a long trial. So the criminals plead guilty and spend three, four or five years in jail. Meanwhile, they’re plotting their next crime.
“Even if we spend $1 million, it’s better to put traffickers away for 40 years,” he said.
“In 1991 there was no currency law here. It was harder to import cheese than cash. It was a country that attracted criminals.”
[…]
And Nicaso said Sam Bronfman was one of the major competitors to Canada’s most notorious bootlegger, Rocco Perri, who supplied booze to Joseph Kennedy. […] Just after the Temperance Act was passed, Perri, who was a construction worker and very poor, became a multi-millionaire. […] Nicaso said Perri created an empire with the help of police officers, lawyers, judges and government officials.
“They all wanted to have a portion of the profits,” he said.
“It’s the same with the sponsorship scandal,” he continued. “Nothing has changed.”
In 1939 Perri was charged with corruption and RCMP officers were ready to testify against him, but Nicaso said Perri hired a brilliant lawyer, Paul Martin, father of the current Prime Minister, and was acquitted.

Kate,
A question for your history buffs out there.
Was Sam Bronfman connected with the Brascan Corporation in one of it’s earlier incarnations?
I know a little something about the mob, and I’ve posted up here and on the Shotgun about it many times.
I didn’t think these OC guys could surprise me anymore. I was wrong.
The revelations about the Public Works Minister’s office and the criminal connections of Alphonso Gagliano astonished me.
Canada bears the footprints of a corrupt central government every bit as severe and insidious as some South American regime.
The fact that Alphonso Gagliano would actually be appointed to a high public office with approval at the highest levels is an indictment that should shake the Canadian people to their core.
The Canadian government gives every appearance of a criminal Racketeering enterprise in direct and willful participation with the Mafia.
Meyer Lanski would see it as the fulfillment of all his boyhood hopes and dreams.
Bronfman, Joe Kennedy, Martin, et al; a wardrobe of skeletons; shake dem bones.
Brascan= Eyton.

Dear Mr. Government, Love Me, But Leave Me–Alone!

Eyton telling the Librano$ to leave him alone.
Yuk. Nyuk.
Greg,
Would you be saying that a book-keeper for the MOB is as complicit as a mouthpiece for the Mob. Would they fit in the same category?
Forgive this ignorant Yank–BRAscan?
Is that what Canada was spending it’s money on instead of MRI machines all these years?
Boobs on the brain.
Good take Doug
Kate…playing with fire…I mean…mentioning the fact that the Yanks royal family(Kennedys)made all their riches illegally! Don’t you know that’s supposed to be our little secret??
oldsquid…I went to Brascan’s website. Need a subscription to get ANY info, and I have better things to spend CAD$550.00 on. But of interest…there is a link there for past/present board members…but it has been deactivated. Ummmmm…do you suppose they read SDA?
old squid, interesting question. Naturally, culpability does not necessarily translate into legal liability. Sometimes skirting a law can be done in such a way that it’s really worse than someone who breaks a law and yet the person is not legally culpable.
John Gotti’s attorney, Bruce Cutler, was not allowed to defend Gotti in the last trial, because Cutler had become so intertwined with the Gambino crime family that he was practically unofficial consigliere. The FBI had films of him showing up at Gotti’s social club, interacting with the boys as if he himself was a wise guy.
The fact that Paul Martin’s father was representing bootleggers meant that he was also representing people who killed off competition and basically made their living through organized crime.
It’s entirely possible that he could have had some kind of association with Joseph Bonanno, Gagliano (became the Lucchese crime family), Scalisi (became the Gambino crime family), and Lucky Lucciano (who brings in Albert Costello and became the Genovese crime family and then the Profacti family, which eventually became the Colombo crime family).
He would have been operating in the time of the Purple Gang and Murder, Inc., and virtually everyone was involved in bootlegging in cooperation with Canadian counterparts and associates.
So, it’s entirely possible that Prime Minister Martin’s father had a number of colorful associates. It’s interesting to think about the idea that Martin grew up in a background that included men of such reknown.
Greg:
You’re right on.
Sadly, the cancer is everywhere in Canada. To change metaphor, the regime’s guard dog is Cerberus, the two-headed dog which in myth guards the gate to Hell ; one head is the Privy Council Office of Canada (PCO) of which Gagliano/Desmarais, et al, are members; the other head of Cerberus is the PMO, the Prime Minister’s Office. (The fact that Gagliano is a member of the PCO is a result of the working of the parliamentary system in Canada. That is another story.)
Behind these two offices, the regime hides. The regime now controls all the central government, the courts, the justice system, the RCMP & other law agencies, most of the MSM, the state propaganda TV/Radio, & the power of patronage, aka clientism & etc.
Large segments of the populace are complicit in the workings of the regime.
The armed forces have been disarmed; the populace must register firearms; the will to resist the regime’s control is moribund. Most of the populace is sleep-walking. The regime deploys the siren song of Socialism to aid in its control of the populace, eg, free health care, & etc. The regime is an amalgam of several parts: large corporations, elites, political parties (Liberal/NDP), criminals, most of the MSM, some union bosses, & etc.
The opposition consists of the Conservatives/Bloc in the House of Commons; some journalists; bloggers/commenters; and large segments of the population from the West. However, the regime is a master of divide and conquer. The regime has been successful to date.
Reform is not in sight, alas. Will reform be carried out?
P.S. Add to this the power of the PM to make appointments at will. Thus, this regime controls a centralized, unitary state;the regime is corrupt and unaccountable to no one. The provinces are not really visible; they are clients.
maz2- a perfect, accurate analysis of Canada Now.
Extending Greg’s theories, one wonders if some in government were aware of and encouraging profit and commerce in the trade of spirits in the tunnels under Winnipeg during prohibition years.
Chicago not far away and it lasted for years.
Names like Bronfmann and Seagrams come to mind. Just speculation. 73s TG
one wonders if some in government were aware of and encouraging profit and commerce in the trade of spirits in the tunnels under Winnipeg during prohibition years.
Perhaps it’s more timely to ask, if some in government are aware that their ships are being used to smuggle dope … if they’re aware that the immigration program is being used to smuggle humans … and government spending programs are funneling money to criminals … if they know that the charities they patronize are supporting terrorists …
Nah! Too far-fetched.
If given the chance I would wipe my a@s with Paul Martin’s tie…
That said, this is akin to M.Moore’s “Bush’s grandfather was a Nazi” BS.
There are plenty of reasons to mock Martin without reaching back a few generations.
I appreciate A Ziggen’s point. There is plenty on the plate without having to go too far back into history.
However, since “Nicaso said there is no political commitment to fight organized crime in Canada”
and
“It’s the same with the sponsorship scandal,” he continued. “Nothing has changed.”
To me this suggests that not only is there no way for law enforcement to get its arms around the magnitude of the problem, but that this problem is one that has been in development over a long period of time.
For organized crime to gain such a foothold in Canada means that organized crime has a deep and entrenched relationship with powerful Canadian interests that that has been cultivated over the decades.
In a lesser way, you can see the same kind of multi-decade corruption in American garbage unions, waterfront unions, and in the financial sources of some politicians in American cities, particularly along the Eastern seaboard.
Many of these criminal associations are of such duration that they have been passed on through several generations of organized crime leadership.
Here’s an epic crime that few seem to care about.
gates and china: Lets make a deal
china: We really like Windows.
gates:yes sirs. I’ll cost ya.
china: OK…as long as you delete democracy, independance, and human rights.
gates: That’s all you want? OK… only cuz you guys never pirate my stuff.

Ezra Levant of the Calgary Sun wrote an article a month ago entitled:
Real-life ‘Libranos’
Questions of criminal activity remain unanswered
http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/Columnists/Calgary/Ezra_Levant/2005/05/16/1041373.html
Here are the interesting bits:
————————————-
Not too long ago, the New York Daily News reported an FBI informant tagged Gagliano as a “made member” of the Bonanno crime family. One shouldn’t put too much stock in the words of a criminal who has cut a deal with police. But why would a New York mobster make up a story about a Canadian politician?
Why did Gagliano intervene to help the wife of Gaetano Amodeo, a mafia hitman, immigrate to Canada?
Why did the RCMP warn Jean Chretien against appointing Gagliano to cabinet in 1993?
How did Gagliano come to be an accountant for companies owned by Agostino Cuntrera, a man later jailed on conspiracy charges for the killing of Paolo Violi, a Montreal mafioso?
…
Take it from another Italian-Canadian: Giuliano Zaccardelli, commissioner of the RCMP. In a news conference in 2000, Zaccardelli warned that the mafia was reaching into Parliament.
“We are seeing signs of criminal organizations that are so sophisticated that they actually are focusing on destabilizing certain aspects of our society. … There are criminal organizations that target this destabilization of our parliamentary system,” he told reporters.
This is too big for the Gomery inquiry, which is limited to the sponsorship program. Gomery has no authority to follow trails of criminal influence outside the sponsorship programs. For example, he disallowed questions about corrupt appointments to the judiciary.
AdScam is only the tip of the Libranos’ iceberg.
————————————-
ALL of these relationships cannot be coincidence. If the RCMP is powerless in this matter or even complicit in the corruption, one would have to conclude that Canada is a country ruled by organized crime.
Corruption has become institutionalized in the Canadian government. The press is complicit, bought and paid for. Good luck to honest Canadians.
I blogged this one yesterday…how does your track back work Kate?
Recent revelations with the mob being players in the Liberal Quebec political/patronage network (and a NYC family capo in their cabinet) is just the recent reminder that the Mob has been a patronage client of Canadian governments for better than 75 years.
Ask youself why, with all the confirming studies of the RCMP and crime experts the mob is here big time, there has never been a mob don prosecuted by the feds in more than 2 decades?
Why is it the evil ol US the Liberal portray as ethically inferior and justice imapired, that nails prosecutes guys like Gotti et al on a regular basis?
OS muses:”Kate,
A question for your history buffs out there.
Was Sam Bronfman connected with the Brascan Corporation in one of it’s earlier incarnations?”
Brascan was a crown jewel in Sam’a old corporate portfolio, which the kids liquidated in the early 90’s when theyr pal Martin allowed them to move huge chunks of cash out of the country tax free ( like the local mafia did as well).
If you’re looking for a money trail of mob cash financing Canada’s larger politically connect corporations you willhave a hard trail to follow, as cash leaves no foot prints…but accounting book sdo….and Canada;s insider paron-corporations have run with 2 sets of books for years. Think of the mob;s enrenched roll in the ruling class elite as a “silent partner” of government and business.
maz2>>To change metaphor, the regime’s guard dog is Cerberus, the two-headed dog which in myth guards the gate to Hell
Nice metaphor, bad fact checking, Cerberus has three heads. Look it up.
