When ‘Liberal’ Isn’t A Dirty Word

An older post at Skeet Skeet Skeet I stumbled on today, that reveals what so few seem to have figured out – the irony of Warren Kinsella’s cheap trick achievement in destroying the political career of a bona fide Canadian liberal.

On the topic of anti-semitism, he addressed the recent UN ‘memorial’ to the victims of the Holocaust. Recognizing it for what it was, he went through a laundry list of complaints with the day:

  • no resolutions or final declarations were allowed
  • Only 41 countries spoke (by his count), and only 5 mentioned Israel. Canada wasn’t amongst those that recognized the Jewish state. You know, the one that was established by the UN because of the holocaust.
  • Kofi Annan’s terrific idea to start a registry of Palestinians who have been affected by the security council (I’m still waiting on that registry of the Sudanese murdered in Darfur), with no mention of the Men, Women and children who have been killed, maimed or otherwise injured by Arab terrorism in Israel
In another parallel to President Bush, Day went on to quote Natan Sharansky, a former Soviet dissident and political prisoner who now is in the Israeli Knesset. Never call a tyrant anything but that. Not a diplomat, not a leader. He went on to state that Sharansky is his personal hero. I find it really hard to not like this guy.

  • Of course, in a world turned upside down – where classic liberalism is denounced as “neo-conservative fascism” and Stalinist holdovers like Castro hold audience with Hollywood “liberal progressives”, I doubt Kinsella could spot a “liberal” if one reached down from the sky to smite him.

    1. Kate,
After living through a week filled with Liberal deceit and biased media gloating, to read a positive tribute of Stockwell Day is appropriate and revealing.
I remember the 2000 election, Day drew huge crowds to his campaign stops. The Liberals and NDP relied on trucked-in zombies. The MSM made limited comments about the size and tone of those that came to hear Day speak. We all know about media hatred and intolerance of anyone that is Christian or right-wing. The media, always in the pocket of the Liberals, helped destroy Canadian democracy during that election while the Liberal Party was using dirty money and kickbacks to wrestle a weak majority.
So, as we move forward, knowing that the Liberals were ‘defeated’ in the House of Commons last week, it is comforting to know that truth is always revealed in the Blogospshere while fantasy is the domain of MSM.

    2. Stockwell was hardly the nutjob he was painted as, but he wan’t exactly a Liberal either. As for Kinsella, at least he has been reasonably consistent- he is honest enough to hate Martin, and rather than cheering than NDP, he seems to support Harper more than anyone (so stop the Mr. Moore comparisons).
In final analysis, Stockwell was simply ill-equipped to be leader, despite the certain amount of charisma he had.

    3. I have had the pleasure of hearing several of Mr. Day’s speeches on subjects as divergent as bias and cronyism in Canadian politics,to Middle east/UN politics, to the media skewing of the political spectrum.
I have always found him to be an articulate, well read and educated speaker who has the gift of passionate conviction to cut through partisan/media disinformation and present the clarity and reality that seems so rare in public policy debates.
I agree with your direction here and from the political ideals I’ve heard from Stockwell Day, I think he very clearly defines the profile of a classic liberal….on the opposite end of the spectum, having heard Kinsella speak on 2 occasions, I think he occupies a place on the political spectrum that was traditionally the ground tread by nation socialist politics..he is overtly statist, authoritarian, revels in bureaucratic tyranny and loves the concept of government owned business.
If Kinsella is where Canada’s yellow media place a “liberal” then by this standard they stand just right of many soviet block nation’s governments from the 70s.

    4. Don’t bring Stockwell into it. We never lived down that whole Doris thing, I don’t want to hear that brought up again.
And while we’re at it. I need to prove that the liberals were deceitful, and that the media was biased for a school project. Can you give me something to go on there anselm? I mean, the slander and insults are great and all at turning off the voters, but every time we do, we get burned by the facts..

    5. You don’t want it brought up. So you bring it up.
Post your real name and address, mocky, you’ll see abundant proof arrive at your door before you know it.
