I’m on the road this week and will be camped out in a park until Monday, followed by a 3,000 km drive home. If the blog posts trickle to a halt, go find something else to do. Summer’s nearly over, get out and enjoy it. I’ll be back by late Wednesday, maybe Thursday.

          1. Alberta born Joni Mitchell is a multi Grammy Award winning artist who was inducted into the R&R Hall of fame in ’97.

            Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young purchased the ‘Woodstock’ song from Mitchell. They were looking for songs to play at the Woodstock Festival since they were a new band. Too bad Mitchell chose not to go to the Festival. She missed the chance of a lifetime!

            Her version of the song has merit. We aren’t familiar with it, so it’s new again.

            The admiration for Joni is still quite evident as seen in this video below:

            It had more to do with her sleeping with Graham Nash. Joni was booked on the Dick Cavett show and transportation in and out of Woodstock was spotty. Joni recorded the song Woodstock first. It was a cover from CSN&Y.

            at the Woodstock Festival since she couldn’t be there because of her prior commitment and based on what her Manager advised her to do. She was dating Nash at the time, (see my post @ 10:15 am here) and wanted to be a part of the show. He had described to her what the significance of the Festival was for the times.

            She recorded the song ‘her’ way after the Woodstock Festival and then CSN&Y did a cover on their first album and recorded it ‘their’ way. I’m not quite sure if she knew whether they were going to tweak it for the Festival to suit themselves. Does anyone out there know? I don’t think she knew.

            As far as I can see, she still owns the song so I stand corrected. Luckily though, for her, because the royalties must be phenomenal.

    Pamir Hakimzadah pleaded guilty to terrorism charges in February of this year and was sentenced to serve time in the maximum-security prison in Penetanguishene, Ont.

  29. Trudeau government greenlights $300,000 to counter “rise of far-right in Quebec”

    Ottawa has greenlit the money necessary for a three-year research project with a focus on “the rise of the far-right in Quebec,” reports CBC.

    Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale gave the announcement that they will be giving $300,000 for the project which was spearheaded by the Centre of Expertise and Training on Religious Fundamentalism, Political Ideologies and Radicalization (CEFIR,) which is based out of Edouard-Montpetit CEGEP in Longueuil.

    The director of the project, Martin Geoffroy, says the project comes at a pivotal time due to what he considers to be the rise of far-right discourse, and its seeping into the mainstream.

    “We want [people] to know to be able to make the difference between what is fact and what is mere opinion or blatantly false,” said Geoffroy on CBC Quebec’s Breakaway.

    The group says the money will be put towards tools to counteract this type of harmful rhetoric online, while also focusing on former military and police.

    “What I have seen so far from my research is that many people that are in the far-right are ex-soldiers,” said Geoffroy, adding that the research also intends to make anti-radicalization information more accessible for young people.

    Trudeau government pledges $930-million to Global Fund

    The Trudeau government is pledging just over $930 million to the largest financier in the fight against AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

    International Development Minister Maryam Monsef announced the funding pledge to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis today at Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District.

    The money represents a 15.7 per cent increase from the $804 million provided by the Liberals to the fund during its previous replenishment cycle in 2016. The Global Fund is seeking a 15 per cent increase in contributions from donor countries in this financing round.

    “Canada is committed to maintaining its leadership in supporting the vital work of multilateral platforms such as the Global Fund to address inequalities that prevent the most vulnerable, especially women and girls, from living healthy and productive lives,” Monsef said in a statement.

    The Swiss-based Global Fund operates on a three-year cycle, with funding from private and public contributors sought in the final year, which in turn finances the next three years of operations.

    The last replenishment in 2016 was held in Montreal and hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. It raised $12.2 billion, with Canada contributing $804 million, a 24 per cent increase from the previous round.
