  1. And in Kennedy’s defense, he did a pretty good job for a guy who allegedly didn’t want to be a politician. He may not have written his Pulitzer Prize book after all, but more importantly, he _was_ a genuine war hero.
He did a lot of dumb stuff personally and politically, but he also cut the highest tax rate down from 90%.
And I’d love to know what he would have done on 9/11.

  2. Kathy,
Don’t forget the standoff with Kruschev’s Russia in the mid Atlantic during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The day that time stopped!
Since his family was not in the oil business I’m sure Osama would be doing hard time in Leavenworth and Islamos would think twice before behaving badly.

  3. The cuban missle crisis probably went way further (farther?) than it had to, but what counts at the end is that “the other guy blinked.”
And let’s face it: it made for not one but two good movies (Missles of October is much better than 13 days, despite the irritating presence of Martin Sheen as RFK. William Devane was a very convincing President.)And that’s what really counts!

  4. Kathy,
Well he could have got them into a war that wasnt theirs, like Vietnam….or botched an invasion, like the Bay of Pigs by not committing enough force to the occasion, wait maybe he was reincarnated…..

  5. Right if his family wasnt smuggling Canadian contraband whiskey now they would be smuggling arms.
In a way the kennedys as a “first family” acted more like our “first nations”.

  6. No, his family was in the grain-beverage and aquatic taxi service. Oh, no, that was just his younger brother, the Castro ass-sniffer.
John F Kennedy was the last true Democrat and “liberal” in the classic sense of the word.

  7. IQ (above average intelligence) is (mostly) an unimportant factor in determining success outside of academic pursuits. There are several characteristics that are often found among highly successful people that are generally characterized as “emotional intelligence” which are far more important; someone who is emotionally intelligent would recognize their limitations and ask for help as needed (as an example).
You see it often in all fields where people think that they are too smart to need help from someone and (typically) end up paying for their arogance.

  8. It was the Texas mafia that killed JFK.
Funny, it was the Texas mafia that put Bush in the presidency.
Seems those Texas mafia folks got their dirty fingers in all the ‘right’ pies.

  9. Texas mafia…..hmmm they couldnt keep 41 in office….clearly not that powerful.
You ever think it might have been the REAL MOB that did him in? Or a bunch of very disgruntled cubans? Or maybe one madman?
    Just asking.
Just how did JFK win in 1960…oh yeah stuffed ballot boxes in Chicago….

  10. A lot of goodwill remains about JFK and the Kennedy family. To get another perspective, may I suggest The Dark Side of Camelot (Hersh), The Making of the President 1960 (White), and J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and the Secrets (Gentry) to get another view of JFK and his family?

  11. Doug,
No more powerful than what you’re on.
I guess in your world Jack Ruby was a Sunday school teaching Baptist minister.

  12. David,
So you mean the mafia that were in Texas….meaning Texas based MOB. Not the colliquialism that refers to any locally based elite as the “(city, university, club, or ethnic name) mafia”
There is pretty good evidence that Ruby was a MOB member, as in organized crime. Or are you saying Ruby, a small time night club owner, was associated with the Texas elite, of which LBJ was one?
Just trying to understand which side of the street you are walking down here.

  13. “I guess in your world Jack Ruby was a Sunday school teaching Baptist minister.”
These days being a minister or a mullah does not mean you arent engaged in criminal activity…..we need a better job descriptor for innocent parties going forward…..lawyer…no….cop…no….priest…nope….nurse, doctor….nope….think just about any position that requires trust has been abused…so maybe we should stick with night club owner, at least our expectations dont get out of whack

  14. Kennedy’s status as WWII hero (PT 109) recently came in for a bit of a shakeup as the last surviving crew member finally revealed that the reason PT 109 kept heading for the Jap destroyers contrary to orders was that the radioman and skipper (JFK) were fast asleep. In other words, he should’ve been cashiered. Never-the-less he did behave bravely in rescuing and protecting his crew once his boat was cut in half by the Jap destroyer.
As a further embarassment, if the libs want to criticize Bush’s IQ, they should bear in mind that he still outscored Kerry on the US military’s officers’ universal entry exam.

  15. I don’t need to see any test results- I know Kate is really smart!
Perhaps I’ll take one of those Mensa tests sometime, just for kicks. Maybe I’ll shock myself and either find out that I’m the biggest imbecile or greatest genius in the world… or something in between… can’t hurt… it’s only a test, meaning nothing… I hate tests anyway and take ’em with a grain of salt… besides, Mrs. Gump says, “Stupid is as stupid does”. Hmm… reminds me of liberals!

  16. I’ve been invited to join mensa twice. Those dolts might be able to do quantum math but can’t figure out how to tie there own shoes. What a joke.

  17. Oh, please…
How smart can someone be if they need to keep telling everyone how smart they are. They would really need to look in the mirror and ask themselves how smart they really are based on accomplishments.

  18. Before the 04 election a psychologist examining Kerry’s and Bush’s military entrance exams concluded that both were in the 125 range and Bush’s IQ was slightly higher. (I’m far too bright to look for the link at 12:55 am here in Ontario.)
An examination of the IQ’s of Bush’s harshest critics would show that most are in the 80- 90 range.

  19. many moons ago I pegged jfk 1.0 as a lothario who wasnt satisfied being married to one of the hottest looking and glamorous first ladies ever.
also he more or less got a taste of his own medicine considering the successful assassinations of foreign leaders during his watch.
drd: jfk asleep at the wheel? egad. also asleep at the wheel as regards to nuke missiles strewn about turkey thus contributing to the rationale for similar configuration of soviet missles in cuba equadistant from american targets ……

  20. mr brown: kennedy contact with the Mob can be traced thru his hollywood connections: early support from sinatra (protege of Mob boss whoever), etc etc.
also inlaw of peter lawford, ‘nuther hollywood type. a.k.a. a hop skip and a jump from las vegas, MOB CAPITAL USA. how do you think the ‘rat pack’ got all those lucrative gigs? RECIPROCAL CONNECTIONS TO THE WHITE HOUSE.
keeping it in the ‘family’ (double entendre there!).
