I am such a well-travelled person that I have been to both those places. And, not to gild the lily, but I actually covered a balloon launch* in Midale. Yep, I was a paparazzi then, but only in a Sask sense.

Diesel fuel in the freight engines that’s burning in more than one engine. Tanks ruptured on derailment and the hot trucks from braking may have ignited the fuel.

This was always the plan – tie oil producers hands until the inevitable environmental disasters start piling up and then blame it all on our oil dependency. They forced oil producers to start shipping via trucks and railcars FFS. The most costly, environmentally unfriendly and riskiest option available. We aren’t allowed to build new pipelines with higher capacity and additional integrated safety features. Even if oil producers could afford to (which they can’t) shutdown the existing pipelines however long it took to replace the entire thing – the enviro nuts would move to never allow them to start back up. Producers just keep repairing as best they can and hope sanity will eventually prevail.
