Layoffs aplenty!

As the slide towards recession accelerates, one silver lining may be that a whole lot of fact-checkers are about to become unemployed.

According to Reuters, Facebook-owner Meta Platforms (which will likely be undoing its name change just as bitcoin bottoms) has cut plans to hire engineers by at least 30% this year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees on Thursday, as he warned them to brace for a deep economic downturn.

“If I had to bet, I’d say that this might be one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history,” Zuckerberg told workers in a weekly employee Q&A session, audio of which was heard by Reuters.

Zuck belatedly acknowledges something that most of us at SDA have known for years:

“Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here,” Zuckerberg said, …. I think some of you might decide that this place isn’t for you, and that self-selection is OK with me.

  1. “I think some of you might decide that this place isn’t for you, and that self-selection is OK with me.“ – or, more concisely, “F Off”.

  2. Economic musical chairs during a recession can be interesting especially if you have no marketable skills and a bad employment record.

Would you hire an ex Twitter or Facebook employee?

  3. It increasingly looks like Musk is going to back out of his stupid, stupid plan to buy Twitter. Hoping Zuck does the same wrt his godawful VR adventure. If he really wants to change the world, re-open the Libra coin proposal.

      1. Hey Kids,

Some of you may have been sitting at home and wondering how to construct a valid argument that will move people into agreeing with you.

First? Always go for the knees first. Make an insult first. Mocking their name is a great move. It is like misgendering or dead naming, only in reverse.

Second? Change the subject to something that doesn’t actually relate to the original discussion. Suggesting that you opponent does not have the background to make a judgement on a third party is a good move. Remember if your opponent is not rich enough to own their own island, to have their own private jet and have private parties for young and old then you are not someone to be trusted.

        Honest.

  4. “self-selection is OK with me.“

Or as Elon Musk said, “If you don’t want to come back to the office you can pretend to work for someone else.”

  5. Gavin Newsom’s imaginary (creative accounting) $100 Billion surplus is gonna turn REAL negative REAL fast.

  6. Quoth the Zuck: “I think some of you might decide that this place isn’t for you…”

That’s nearly word for word what the president of Netflix said before they laid off 150 of The Woke and cancelled all the most Woke projects.

Could this be the long-awaited DeWokening of Big Tech?

    1. Yes. Even before the easy money started draining out, it was clear there was no reason to appease these people. They are disruptive by their very nature and psyche. Kicking them out hasn’t even caused much of an uproar funny enough. Paper tiger?

  7. The only words I want to hear from establishment propagandists:

    “They took our jerbs!”

  8. I certainly don’t wish anyone to be unemployed against their will and I really am not enthused about the economic downturn/recession/depression we are about to experience but in all honesty facebook lost what it was that made them enjoyable. It stopped being a place where friends and families could chat and reconnect and became a place where wokeness and nonsense reign supreme. I still have an account but only because it doesn’t cost me anything and when I check it every week or so I realize how little I miss of it.

    1. I re-created an account a year after I nuked mine, and the only thing I use it for is decent deals on Marketplace.

  9. Given that, in every recession I’ve lived through, HR people are the first to be cut, I expect a massive amount of unemployment amongst HR types, diversity officers, wokerati cheerleaders for corporations and so forth.

Couldn’t happen to a more useless group of people.

  10. “If I had to bet, I’d say that this might be one of the worst downturns that we’ve seen in recent history,”

Huh, what happened to the Biden boom?

  11. “Realistically, there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn’t be here,” Zuckerberg said

And who put them there Zuck? what have you and your managers actually been doing?

  12. When the layoffs happen in the government I will be happier. They could start with anyone whose job title include the words policy or analyst.

  13. Or, “Please quit cause otherwise we will need to offer you redundancies.”

Not quite a dick move as “Please take our abortion money so we don’t have to pay for your maternity leave”, but up there.
