Not Just Big Tech: Government Memo Shows Bill C-10 Targets News Sites, Podcast and Workout Apps, Adult Websites, Audiobooks, and Sports Streamers for CRTC Regulation

According to an internal government memo to Guilbeault signed by former Heritage Deputy Minister Hélène Laurendeau released under the Access to Information Act, the department has for months envisioned a far broader regulatory reach. The memo identifies a wide range of targets, including podcast apps such as Stitcher and Pocket Casts, audiobook services such as Audible, home workout apps, adult websites, sports streaming services such as MLB.TV and DAZN, niche video services such as Britbox, and even news sites such as the BBC and CPAC.

It’s a long list. Take a look

  1. How does Elon Musk’s satellite internet service tie into this?
Will his receivers be illegal in Canada to prevent normal people from accessing the normal non-Trudeau internet?

    1. It’s an ISP operating in Canada. So the CRTC can order them to not allow you to download and install certain apps: Newsmax, OANN, Rumble. Also, Musk’s Starlink could be a dangerous competitor for the Canadian telecom cartel (BellRogersTelus). It needs to be kept in line.

      1. The CRTC will launch anti-satellite missiles at the satellites. Or, more economical but more contraversial, they will beam up powerful white noise on the up-link frequencies to the satellites as they pass over Canada, and 60 degrees from vertical, to destroy the up-link. Perhaps it would be enough to re-broadcast dear Leaders speeches at mega-volume pover the bandwidths and timeslots allocated

The CBC could be put in charge of this.

    2. They tried the illegal receiver thing with C-band and Ku-band satellite TV decades ago; didn’t work. It’s even harder with the smaller recievers and transmitters required for LEO. No, see my post immediately above..

      1. That was a PET initiative and people rebelled against it.

I remember when Pat McGeer, one of Bill Bennett’s cabinet ministers, put up a satellite receiver on the grounds of the B. C. Legislature.

In Fort St. John, the CRTC absolutely refused to give the region access to a second over-the-air channel. A private attempt to bring one in was made in the mid-1970s when someone installed a repeater on the side of an old CNCP microwave tower located about halfway between Dawson Creek and FSJ. It got Channel 2 out of Grande Prairie, so at least we were able to watch CFRN from Edmonton for a few years.

Someone had the bright idea of putting up a bootleg satellite receiver in the local area and for nearly 2 years, people could watch The Movie Channel, as it was called. Then the Mounties came by and towed it away. People weren’t happy.

It wasn’t until the mid-1980s and Mulruin was PM before that region could finally get a decent selection of TV channels as cable was finally allowed in. If that hadn’t happened, people would have still been stuck with one channel, the CBC affiliate out of Dawson Creek.

  2. Unauthorized ideas, discussions only cause problems for the harmonious Canada. Especially amongst ….the simple folk. Troubling their mind. Making a void between these good, simple people and their loving overlords.

Its for their own good. Honest.

  3. Oh, goodie goodie goodie! I’ll finally have nothing but JustinVision on my TV!

Channel 2: the life and times of Dear Leader, an epic 1000-part documentary
Channel 3: Dear Leader’s accomplishments (the same selfie scenes over and over again)
Channel 4: the wisdom of Dear Leader (a blank screen with nothing but background noise)
Channel 5: the life and times of Dear Leader’s mommy

I think you can figure out the rest.

      1. The cable service to the homes of Liberal Party loyalists won’t be required to carry it.

    1. Channel 6 … Drag Queen story hour. There will be a quiz at your child’s government Day care every Wednesday

  4. So what is the Canadian adult web site to be known as? “Fuck with Canada”? Perhaps there will be Participaction program or perhaps an “Orgy Pyramid” where the best diets for orgasmic sex are ordained by government experts?

All under the auspices of Can’t Bloody Come

    1. If one were so inclined they could create a 100% CRTC approved Canadians only adult website where both ADULT parties wear a Trudeau mask or maybe a McKenna or Freeland mask (shudder).

For a wee bit of variety, one of the consenting Laurentian parties might wear a Trudeau blackface mask (many such choices) and / or costume from the strategic costume stockpile (codename TICKLETRUNK).

Think of it like that NSFW sub-reddit where they do scary Bilbo face (don’t search for it you’ll regret it). These liberal monsters should not be exempt from internet rule 34.

  5. Get a hi quality VPN, for your own privacy. Just like LIEberals, redundant dolts, but stupid enough to be dangerous

  6. Yep VPN in a free country like Venezuela, Russia or similar is a must now.

I’m honestly surprised that the CPC.ca website is not on the list. I guess they can’t be that blatant.

  7. We are getting closer to “Oh, My Balls” in the movie “Idiocracy” and the little children of the CRTC will lead us home (sarcasm off)

      1. Spell “fortify” with an “a” instead of an “o” and we come close to reality.

          1. If you right-click on the Time article and view source you’ll finf the original headline.

  8. What!?
    No more cat fart videos!?
    Stephen Goebbles is saving us.
GrammarMan can correct my spelling of the surname, and I, frankly, do not care.
    Have a nice day.

    1. Cats cannot consent to be filmed and broadcast. Therefore … every cat playing piano video … is animal cruelty.

  9. It’s very simple.
The CRTC is a regulatory agency of the crown, whose management is appointed on the advise of the PM.
Therefore, anything they are given authority over they will regulate it, it’s what they do. Hence, if this bill becomes law they will be regulating the internet and by doing so will be imposing limits to what can seen and heard.

A good question to ask the advocates of this bill is this:

The liberals at some point won’t be government and then a different party will be given the opportunity to appoint someone to the CRTC that does not share the same philosophical opinions that liberals do. When that happens will they be ok with the CRTC regulating the internet?

      1. I agree with your observation.

But the thought of being voted out is what keeps liberals awake at night, and the longer they are in power the more fearful of that outcome they become.
The question is partly rhetorical as they will always invoke cognitive dissonance to declare support for democratic elections as long as they win. Anything that suggests otherwise puts them into a full on mouth foaming rage.
So really asking such a question isn’t done to get a answer as much as it’s about getting them unhinged.
You could also modify the question with “what happens if someone like Mark Carney becomes PM and decided he didn’t like the philosophical attitude of the CRTC management”?
The gist of the question is to insert a name that the respondents philosophically disagree with. In the case of a Trudeau supporter that would be anyone other than Trudeau.

    1. No it was the “Wets” in his own party. Ergo O’Toole. Or is t O;Rielly from Fawlty Towers?

  10. Our politicians are such pathetic weaklings.
All criticism of our elites is Hate Speech and shall be brutally punished.
That is what the Liberals, the Bloc and the NDP all believe .but lack the stones to say.
Every poor wee quivering “leader”,”Mummy, those peasants are mocking me,make them stop”
Good thing Mummy is on the CRTC.
Time we made it plain,no more consent to be fucked around by incompetent twits.
On pain of a sudden and very pain filled death.

Although I had to laugh,I bought a couple of bricks of 12 gauge,so 200 rounds, the Phillipeno cashier asked me if I was hunting ducks or people..
I laughed, told her I was not that crazed or evil.

I was buying ammo because I foresee massive inflation, shortages and hysteria.

But this is where the constant race baiting, fear mongering and hatred of gun owners has brought us.

Tool owners will be prosecuted, cause ‘they know’ what those tools can be used for..

That there is Assault Style Liberal Logic.

Did I tell you there are no Liberals in the Canadian Liberal party?
Just a bunch of power hungry Statists.

  11. I’m curious hope the CRTC is going to know which bits flying from a port on some machine to some pretty on another machine is, it is not, something they can regulate unless they they know the source, origin and content of all the data that flows over the Internet. How can they distinguish between your video call with your business partner and and the WWE’s Thunder Dome, both of which use WebRTC?

Expect massive surveillance being the norm in order to enforce this
