Culture War

Richard Fernandez;

Even before Breitbart’s warning there was Orwell who understood that the Left’s ultimate ability was to uproot the past and plant their chosen seed for the future. His famous dictum “he who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past” is an unsurpassed indictment of groupthink totalitarianism. There seemed no doubt they would succeed. Within its bubble the Left’s control of culture is so absolute they can watch 1984 without realizing it’s about them.
Yet the real mystery — one which even Orwell himself did not anticipate — is why, despite having won every culture battle, the Left has lost the war. Look around you. Every single country which adopted socialism as an economic system went bankrupt. The Soviet Union collapsed. Now the Western Gramscian project is self-immolating in the fires of its own absurdity. The current political crisis is the collective shudder of mortality passing through “every university, newspaper, TV network, Hollywood studio, publisher, education school and museum in the nation”. The left may have “wrapped up the culture war two generations ago” but it is rotting inside the wrapping.

  1. Richard writes it well. Some of us, especially on this blog, have know the truth he writes about for some time now.
You can see the reaction of the eastern European countries who have experienced the socialist utopia to Trump’s visit as compared to vacuous western European leaders who still want to lead their people through the Armageddon of the socialist Godless utopia.
The Venezuelan kulaks have gotten the message as have the Zimbabwean kulaks and the South African are learning now.

  2. Ah… reality check is in order. Certainly it smells like rotting garbage but that’s a feature not a fault. Culture wars are NOT over, the Progressives are NOT losing. At best, a temporary pause in the descent into chaos describes the situation ….regrouping as it were.
The liberal left and there mindless minions are relentless like the Terminator, you can’t reason with them and they will never stop until you are dead. Believe it.
On a slightly different but related note, I have taken to reading Reuters as a news source lately. I have found, at least so far, that they give the most balanced news and seem to cover things that are ignored by other news outlets.

  3. It’s not a mystery, it’s math.
Which, now that I think about it, probably *is* a mystery to many on the left.

  4. Meh, can’t cure stupid.
But can learn to get out of range/send ’em down a different path.
The desire for absolute rule over others, means you must drown in the endless mindless details of ordering other peoples lives to suit your desire.
And as all Libtards deny, when the thing you fear most, is yourself… there is no escape.
Their fear and loathing contaminates everything.
The only reason they are perceived to be winning the “culture wars” is they are the only participants, being irrelevant and useless to people with lives to live, they are ignored.
    Talk amongst yourselves..Says it all.

  5. But, but … not:
“How do supporters of Bernie Sanders feel about the minimum wage? You will find no such government-imposed floors on labor in Sweden, Norway, or Denmark. Instead, minimum wages are decided by collective-bargaining agreements between unions and employers; they typically vary on an occupational or industrial basis. Union-imposed wages lock out the least skilled and do their own damage to an economy, but such a decentralized system is still arguably a much better way of doing things than having the central government set a one-size fits all wage policy that covers every occupation nationwide.”
In a move that would be considered radically pro-capitalist by young Americans who #FeelTheBern, Sweden adopted a universal school choice system in the 1990s that is nearly identical to the system proposed by libertarian economist Milton Friedman his 1955 essay, “The Role of Government in Education.”
In practice, the Swedish system involves local governments allowing families to use public funds, in the form of vouchers, to finance their child’s education at a private school, including schools run by the dreaded for-profit corporation.”
Far from being a failure, as the socialists thought it would be, Sweden’s reforms were a considerable success. According to a study published by the Institute for the Study of Labor, the expansion of private schooling and competition brought about by the Swedish free-market educational reforms “improved average educational performance both at the end of compulsory school and in the long run in terms of high school grades, university attendance, and years of schooling.”
Overall, it is clear that the Scandinavian countries are not in fact archetypes of successful democratic socialism. Sanders has convinced a great deal of people that socialism is something it is not, and he has used the Scandinavian countries to prove its efficacy, while ignoring the many ways they deviate, sometimes dramatically, from what Sanders himself advocates.”

  6. I couldn’t agree more. When I envision my sons’ future in 20+ years when they’re my age (45), I can’t help but think they’ll be living in a different country than what I have known or would desire for them.
Sure, conservatives get the occasional win but when placed in power they generally do nothing to reverse socialist policies; rather, at best, they only slow the decline.
The trouble with reversing welfare or entitlements is the perception of heartlessness that accompanies it. Who wants to be seen to steal the bread from the mouth of a recipient who has been dependent on the state for a good portion of his life?
Short of a revolution – which may offer a favourable reset only at the behest of miraculous leadership – the only practical solution I can see going forward is enduring, genuine, conservative leadership. ‘Enduring’ so that it can have a chance to create the opportunities that will give the people the prosperity they need to remain convinced and ‘genuine’ so that the governing power remains true to the premise that got them elected.

  7. “the Left has lost the war”
That’s beyond counting chickens before they’ve hatched. The Dems are so popular they the GOP to nominate a life long member for the presidency. Obamacare isn’t being repealed, indeed the US seems headed to single payer. The Trumpening more and more resembles a less effective version of the Picketty charge and he will likely pass with little accomplishment except handing the USG back to Democrats. As I said before, with conservative commentary in the ‘idiot phase’ the table is set for progs to take over.

  8. Okay, this article has some good points contaminated with conservative persecution complex/outright delusion:
American soldiers are bloodthirsty lawbreaking maniacs (Any military film).
Really? Did we watch the same cut of ‘Hurt Locker’ or ‘Black Hawk Down’? WTF is he talking about?
The CIA conducts illegal, secret operations that have nothing to do with protecting America.
    Well….they sometimes did/do: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Guatemalan_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat
Radical Muslim terrorists are never villains.
WTAF is this guy talking about?
Maybe conservatives will have more luck influencing the culture when stop wearing beer googles and cut out the persecution complex.

  9. I think people are misinterpreting what he means when he says “despite having won every culture battle, the Left has lost the war. Look around you. Every single country which adopted socialism as an economic system went bankrupt.”
What I assume he is saying is that every time the left wins, the country they take power in goes bankrupt and collapses. Sure the left wins political power, and when they do, it’s the country that loses. American governments are so in debt that there is no way out of it. Even if Trump cuts spending to the bone the interest charges on the accumulated debt and the unfunded liabilities will come home to roost, like they are now in Illinois.

  10. The problem is that doesn’t mean the left has lost the war. Argentina went down that road and bankruptcy did not turn them around. Look up their history it is frightening. If it can happen there it can happen anywhere.
Also, Trump isn’t cutting nothing. He loves big government and his supporters too as long as the pogey goes to white folk.
The good points: I guess the point that despite the left’s dominance of trendsetting institutions, they don’t have the domination of society you’d expect. They’re under-performing what they should have considering their assets.

  11. “Sure, conservatives get the occasional win but when placed in power they generally do nothing to reverse socialist policies; rather, at best, they only slow the decline.”
You are mostly right about this.
Federally, the Conservative Party got rid of the Wheat Board and scraped the gun registry. Everything else the Conservative legislated the Liberals have reversed. The Conservatives left Bill C-68 intact, ready for the Liberals or NDP to build on again. Nothing was done to curb the taxpayer paid Liberal propaganda arm.
In Saskatchewan, actually the courts advanced the various se*ual causes in our society with halfhearted resistance from the provincial government, and the schools continue to teach and advance the various social justice causes. Only in the fiscal area do you actually see some conservative policy. The HRC is still there and only reigned in a little, and ready to take off with its Stalinist show trials when the NDP come back in.

  12. “I think people are misinterpreting what he means when he says “despite having won every culture battle, the Left has lost the war. Look around you. Every single country which adopted socialism as an economic system went bankrupt.”
And, if I may, I would add, many such as Zimbabwe, Venezuela have also degenerated into murder and mayhem. Russia, Eastern Europe, China, Cambodia adopted official murder of opponents or alleged opponents, many for decades. Here they use more subtle methods of getting rid of opponents.

  13. The left will ultimately lose because, in Ayn Rand’s words, “reality always avenges itself”. The question is how much damage they will do in the interim.

  14. To quote The Deplorable Phantom
“Finally, the damage to the nation was so great, that they got up off their butts and voted for the rodeo clown because anyone else would have been more of the same. ”
Yes, this, and the fact that Trump could self finance.  The “more of the sames” are compelled to spread their legs for the Globalists and the Financialists, for campaign funds.
The Dems and the GOPe could have turned this around at any time, and still can, if they refocus on the very real concerns of  the Working Middle, you know those people who aren’t interested in hand outs, subsidies or gaming the system but aspire to be self sufficient, productive and contributing.
There have been a few Dems and Reps who have stepped out and made this very case but luckily, for Trump, they have been spitting into the wind. Any attempt to actively work for the well being and a positive future for everyday working Americans will be scuttled by the Political-Media Complex.
Mostly the “more of the sames” lack the necessary self awareness and are too self serving to respond.   Trump is sure lucky in his enemies and critics.

  15. I have watched history, which I have lived through, be changed beyond all recognition. nv53, the damage will be extensive and not reversible.

  16. “the Working Middle, you know those people who aren’t interested in hand outs, subsidies or gaming the system”
BAHAHAHAHHAHAHA the ‘working middle’ loves its entitlements like Social Security and all else. The ones that Trump won’t touch. The ones that are going to bankrupt the USG.
“Mostly the “more of the sames” lack the necessary self awareness and are too self serving to respond.”
For that reason and so many others, Trump is truly just more of the same (once you peel back the illiteracy and mental illness).
    “People are pissed”
    Means nothing.

  17. “For that reason and so many others, Trump is truly just more of the same (once you peel back the illiteracy and mental illness).”
And yet here he is, President of the United States, after outmaneuvering and or outsmarting the Political Class and the Media.
    Lulz

  18. “For that reason and so many others, Trump is truly just more of the same (once you peel back the illiteracy and mental illness).”
    A feature not a bug.
And yet here he is, President of the United States, after outmaneuvering and or outsmarting the rest of the Political Class and the Media.
    Lulz
