That particular rifle is quite popular for bush hunting, mostly for Deer. It’s light, (6.8 lbs) short, (37.8 inches) and could be purchased as carbine or a rifle. It has a slow muzzle velocity of 2450 FPS. The carbine holds 6 shells, the rifle 8. Most 94s were bored at .30 caliber, however a .32 special was available. Because the lever action ejects the shell on top of the receiver, it is rather difficult to mount a scope, thus most are used with open sights. Many hunters prefer the Marlin model 336, a much superior lever action firearm that later became available in .308 among other calibers.
The original Model 1894 was designed by John Browning and was chambered for 32-40 ammo and later 32-55. Over 7,500,000 model 1894s and 94s were built. At least 3 US presidents received 94s from Winchester as gifts, it is most likely one of the most popular high powered hunting rifles in the world. A few thousand models were actually used during WWI by the US army.
In modern terms, I would label it an antique although many are still used for deer. T.Eaton and Simpson’s sold them for about $75-$95 when I was teen in the 60’s, a good used model could be had for $30.00. A modern variant of the 94 is now made in Japan. It would most likely be one of the easiest firearms to purchase without an FAP.
I was quite surprised to see that particular gun being used for that particular type of crime. 94s are most likely to be used by young Saskatchewan farm boys either to shoot road signs out on a Saturday night or hunt deer with a spotlight. Assault type rifles are much more popular among the holy warriors. That tells me this idiot was a tad off key. And no doubt that after Vickers was done with him, he was indeed ”Hole-yed.”

I was quite surprised to see the reader comments on this story. My own comment was deleted, for whatever reason I don’t know. A lot of the readers are angered by the fact that the Harper administration is looking at reviewing hate speech laws that would prevent potential and home grown terrorists from making derogatory comments against Canada. I was always under the impression that such legislation was already in force and dating back to the Trudeau administration. But then that’s the CBC, and not the real world.

During the last strike by BC teachers, my sister and I both agreed that more parents will be looking at home or private schooling. I love history. In the past when groups go on strike repeatedly (every 3-5 years) that means they are on the way out as a profession. Plasterers went on strike so often in the 1950’s, that drywall was invented(no great skills are required to install it). Milk men went on strike so often, that we now buy our milk, butter, eggs and cheese in the grocery store. The longshoremen went on strike so often, that intermodal transport and container shipping was invented. I predict that public schooling and Canada Post will both be reduced presences on the Canadian landscape 10-15 years from now.
