Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Good man. Never said anything bad about anyone. RIP.
I am deeply saddened to hear of Jim Flaherty’s sudden and unexpected passing. It is profoundly unfair that he did not have a chance to enjoy his well earned retirement. He pretty much died in office. So long good sir.
Canada has lost one of it’s best.
RIP Jim.
As a Catholic, I say, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.”
As a sinner, I say, “Good riddance. Thanks for saddling my kids with an extra 4500 in federal debt during your tenure as finance minister.”
That is shocking. He retired not that long ago. He must have been more ill than he let on.
Go check the comments …. at least one lefty idiot troll is doing a victory dance.
Hey Tom,
We expect this from leftist’s and you didn’t disappoint.
Obama’s deficit in 2012 ALONE indebted every US citizen by US$4600.00
But facts mean little to those as insensitive and rude as yourself and most ‘Progressives’.
To be expected from the left; no clicks from me.
Besides links to anything cbc are bad for your health.
Very sad; RIP Mr. Flaherty you did an outstanding job for Canada.
My condolences for your family, friends and loved ones everywhere.
Damn,I’m shocked too. Flaherty was a good man in a tough position, did his job as well as he could. 64 is WAY too young to go.
RIP,sir.
Even the CTV said “He was one of Canada’s best finance ministers ever.”
Tom .. you are not worth the zeros and ones to even comment. Shame on you … your religious comment does not let you off. $4500 you say? X10 that if Dippers and Libs had anything to say. Bah. Troll is far too good.
RIP Jim Flaherty. You are a good man.
Jim Flaherty was one of the BEST in the political sphere. How could anyone not like and respect him? He helped to keep Canada at the forefront of nations in terms of our economy and financial management. He was a loyal friend when most others turned their backs on the Ford brothers. He had no problem taking an unpopular stand. He was a GOOD MAN. He had integrity. My condolences go to his family. May you rest in peace, Jim.
Terribly shocked and saddened to hear this news. Mr. Flaherty seemed like a genuinely warm and considerate human being with that great, wry, Irish sense of humor. He was a great finance minister and helped shepherd our country through an extremely difficult world financial environment.
In 2015 we will have a surplus (I think we actually do now but Mr. Flaherty was being prudent.) Are there any other G7 countries that can claim the same?
We have, I believe, the lowest debt to GDP ratio of any of the G7 countries. Can those nations being led by “enlightened, progressive” leaders say the same?
While our closest trading partner flounders under the massive unleashing of debt and printed money of the obamessiah, we are moving steadily forward.
Thank you Jim for your years of service. May God bless you and be a comfort to your family
Canada has lost a great leader.
The greatest tribute that Canada could pay to him would be for all future governments to ask themselves, would Flaherty approve of this budget and if the answer was negative then agree to go back to the desk and rework it.
You know you’ve done a fair job as a political public servant when, as a Conservative, your death doesn’t ignite comments of joyous vitriol on CBC’s site. I was happily surprised by the sincerity of the posts. RIP Mr. Flaherty. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this tough time.
Flaherty was a good man and the best Finance Minister in my memory. Condolences to his family and may he rest in peace.

Harper Derangement Syndrome over at the CBC:
“Rachel T. Scott
Flaherty was a good “man” and in my view it was his entanglement with Harper that ultimately took his life. You can not be a decent person and not feel the stress in the evil pressure cooker that Harper and his corporate goons have created.”
Ahhhh, lefties…they never disapoint.
The H of C will be a different place without him.
Some of the best moments were in QP with his sharp and impish wit. Recall times when Ralph Goodale would stand to question with pompous righteous indignation, Jim would inject ‘now settle down there, Ralph,’ to the amusement of many. Usually would result in a light admonition from the Speaker, but he enjoyed the reparte.
A good man. RIP.
Tom, If Flaherty would have started with a Conservative majority, your sons would be further ahead. I hope you’ve put your 4% gst savings (5% vs 9% called for by the Liberals) into a special account for your sons. If not, you need to let God shine some light on you.
Most citizens have a jaded opinion of politicos but one should never forget the sacrifices they make on our behalf, right or wrong.
RIP, Jim and thank you.
May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand”

“As a sinner,”
You spelled a$$hole wrong.
“Ahhhh, lefties…they never disapoint”
Yeah, these are the same people who will be beside themselves with grief when Fidel Castro dies.
A statement from Stephen Harper, and others, from the National Post:

RIP Jim. an honorable man.
As a Catholic you aren’t showing Christian compassion, your statement is beyond the pale, you shame any decent human no matter what religion you profess to be.
Sad day to hear about Jim Flaherty’s passing.
It was only a matter of time before an idiot liberal commented
@Tom. You sir are a despicable entity. I won’t say you are what I am (human) because as an entity you deserve no recognition as what others on this thread are – ‘human beings’.
Your comment is pathetic, childish and representative of the hate, bigotry and basic lack of human decency too many liberals/socialists display on a daily basis in response sections on news and blogs websites.
Your comment truly defines the extent of your depravity. You are a disgrace to all Catholics and anyone of faith.
Since you claim to be Catholic you had better go to confession ASAP. Otherwise you deserve to rot in hell.
RIP Jim Flaherty. May you be a half an hour in Heaven before the devil knows you’re dead.
Rest in peace Jimbo.
Don’t you just love Sunday Catholics?
The rest of the week they are total ashholes.
Flaherty did what few other politicos do, and that is, to tell all of us to try and live within our means, and that saying NO, is ok.
It encourages self-reliance. Didn’t always agree with his decisions, but they were based on logic.
Sorry to see that Mr. Flaherty had to go so soon after retirement. I think he deserved to spend more time here, particularly with his family, before moving on to the next plane of existence.
My condolences to his family. Accolades to the man.
Scary and sad.
Guess he was sicker than he let on.
64 is way too young.
Flaherty was an entertaining politician and a righteous man.
RIP Jim.
I was literally choking it back as I watched the SunNews reports on Mr. Flaherty. He was a great Canadian who bought our country’s finances under control. We owe him a lot.
Thank you, sir.
That is sad news.
Let it be a reminder to all that it is never too early to spend more time with those you love.
PM Harper and Mr. Mulcair’s kind words showed that they personally cared for the man.
Justin’s tweet was also sincere.
As a human I stand in respect of a man who did so much to elevate Canada to a place of envy in the world today. As a Christian I have hope that Jim’s love and workmanship is a true reflection of God’s Grace. RIP Jim Flaherty. Canada is the poorer with your passing.
I wonder how many of our progressive friends will take a moment to think that if Flaherty had been a finance minister in Africa or Asia or South America – and I daresay, some countries in Europe – he would have, over 8 years, feathered his own nest to the tune of millions, if not tens of millions. But he was an honourable man, and one of his reasons for leaving was “I gotta go make some money!”. I’m sure the long hours and tremendous strain of being Finance minister contributed to his early demise.
Tom and his buddies would do well to consider that Tom Mulcair was clearly shaken, sad, and sincere in his comments about a man who was his political antithesis, and yet remained someone that Mulcair respected and even liked.
I hope Mr. Flaherty is at peace; he has earned it.
As a centrist and somebody who would likely never vote Conservative, I too admired Flaherty. He struck me as fiscally conservative, but not over ideologically so and willing to invoke pragmatism when necessary. As someone who could have made much more in the private sector we should admire his commitment to public service. He will be missed by all.
“In 2015 we will have a surplus (I think we actually do now but Mr. Flaherty was being prudent.) Are there any other G7 countries that can claim the same?”
An admirable position to be in when considering the abysmal financial situations of the vast majority of countries nowadays. However surpluses and balanced budgets mean absolutely nothing to the liv who is concerned only with entitlements and freebees.
That being said, Mr. Flaherty was a principled and courageous politician which, in many cases today, is a contradiction of terms.
Thanks to Jim, Canada is held up as a role model for the G7. He was a good man who actually cared about Canada’s finances as well as individual finances. R.I.P.
Very sad day for Jims family, and the country. An honorable man. RIP.
The lot of you complaining about my comment regarding Flaherty’s oversight of massive deficit growth in the federal government are acting like a bunch of leftists. You may as well call yourselves the “It’s Different When We Do It” Party, as Kathy Shaidle would say.
From what I know of the man he was a decent human being, in his personal life he was dedicated to helping others and he was well respected. These are important.
These are some of the facts regarding federal government spending under the Conservatives:
When the Tories took control of government in 2006, Federal government program spending was $188 billion.
In the latest budget, Federal government program spending will amount to about $270 billion. That’s an increase in spending of over 40%.
During that same time, GDP went from about $1.3 trillion to about $1.5 trillion. That’s an increase of about 15% over the same time.
To all of you clucking that the NDP or the Liberals would have done worse, you’re right. If you fancy yourselves as conservatives, you should have higher expectations of your Party than “they’re less bad than the other guy.”
It’s rather disheartening that the majority of you resorted to ad hominem attacks instead of debating like normal humans.
Tom, I don’t see this thread as the proper place for a debate. The man just died yesterday.
Fair point.
I am reminded at this sad time the abuse Flaherty and the government took from Kevin Page, parliamentary budget officer, in his accusations that their estimates and forecasts were wrong and the government was missing the boat.
History has proven that Flaherty was on the right track and Page was wrong and also we now hear the accolades of not only the business community, world peers but also opposition politicians of the effective job Flaherty and the government took to deal with the trying times.
No other politician’s death has so personally affected me as that of Mr. Flaherty. He was a rock in my confidence since around 2007 when income trusts were abandoned (with good reason) and the GST was lowered to 5% from 7% (in effect, he started stimulus before the crash hit). He saved Canadians from a lot worse in the 2008 crash with those 2 steps and I will always be grateful. In addition, Mr. Flaherty was a delightful character who could even deliver a budget in a manner that made the House laugh. Canada is poorer for his passing.
