The Obamas will attend the star-studded gala at Ford Theatre featuring singer Kelly Clarkson, comedian George Lopez, actor Dick Van Dyke and others. Ty Burrell of ABC’s “Modern Family” will host.
South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and South African Constitutional Court Justice Albie Sachs are to receive the Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal.
The event will be televised as America Celebrates July 4th at Ford’s Theatre on July 2 by ABC.
For sure Michelle will wear a “stunning” gala gown but this time the gown will stand out against a sickening background of muddy oil covered birds and beaches.
I hope Michelle has selected the worst possible dress for this inappropriate event. They should have canceled Sir Pall and this gala 2 weeks ago.
UPDATE – And the wait was rewarded: Michelle looks like a seal in a silver spandex wetsuit.
Of course, some will be all a-flutter.
Update: Nero Fiddles

If Bush did this in the aftermath of Katrina…hell to pay. Remember that time he went golfing?
A much deserved break for the Obamas. Or did you forget Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize? Did Bush ever win a Nobel Peace Prize? No. Al Gore did, so he deserves a nice big mansion despite the fact that he tells everyone else to get by with less.
If Bush could have even pronounced the word ‘Louisiana’ properly, perhaps he might have earned himself a little golf break.
Yes, it’s quite something how Obama and family are focusing on parties and golf and vacations while the US stumbles along losing jobs, reeling from a horrendous oil spill,…
Obama is behaving exactly as he behaved as the editor of the Harvard Law Review. He’d turn up once in a while, full of good cheer and smiles..do absolutely nothing but talk..and disappear again. The entire word load and management agenda, was carried out by others.
Now, Obama ignores the oil spill except to insist that it’s not his fault and rant about how evil BP is (ignoring that he, Obama, approved that particular oil well and that he, Obama, rejected drilling in safer areas). Obama ignores the calls for help from such as Bobby Jindhal, who requires federal authority and assistance for various cleanup equipment and funds.
Obama ignored the Iranian demonstrators for freedom, ignores Iran’s almost-there nuclear weapons, ignores the jobless..actually claiming that the part-time census workers are part of the ‘surge in new jobs created by His administration’.
As things go bad for Obama, he will retreat more and more to the virtual world of campaign style speeches where he is totally unaccountable..and it seems, parties and more parties. He ignored the anniversary of D-Day..and instead..had a party.
He’s destroying the Democratic Party and how long will they put up with him?
“The comments that I was going to post have been self censured because of flagrant racial overtones”
Michelle seems to be a very unhappy camper or hides her enthusiasm for being first lady quite well. Perhaps she could invite Grace Mugabe for tea sometime and pick up some pointers on how to pull it all together.
Barack deserves to be slammed for the partying in the midst of the Gulf spill. Politics and all. Give it to him, both barrels.
But can we lay off Michelle’s bodily imperfections? It is lower than low, if you ask me, akin to ad hominem. I can’t imagine people appreciating a similar smearing of Laura Bush, whom I cannot recall ever revealing as much flesh during Dubya’s eight years in the White House.
He’s destroying the Democratic Party and how long will they put up with him?

You make that sound like a bad thing 🙂
Sgt Lejaune,
Winnie Mandela could also be included in the tea party. Between Winnie and Grace, there’s many an interesting story from which to learn.
Why no boob belt?
ET: “He’s destroying the Democratic Party…”
===================
At least he has one thing going for him.
As far as Michelle O’s fashion sense goes, she has none. Jackie O she is not. I can’t think of another First Lady in all my years of watching, (which began with Jackie O) who wore such disastrous and inappropriate apparel. She should fire her consultant, whoever it is.
I’m with you, Mark P. I’m no fan of Will Smith, or his missus, but slagging the lady’s look is not done by respectable folk.
Party on Wayne, party on Garth!
Like any good Leftist, Barry is all about the perks, the pomp and circumstance, the high class party action with the big name headliners. He’s hoping some of the magic fame dust will stick to his suit, and lift his numbers up out of the tractor rut they’re in.
Friends of the Little Guy. Bwaha! The Little Guy is washing dishes in the White House basement so Barry can have his Kobe beef on nice clean porcelain and silverware.
So Lefties, how you liking your guy these days? Looking good there eh? Where’s the trolls to tell me how much worse it would be with a Big Business friendly Republican running the show?
Typical latte liberals (or, champagne socialists, if your prefer). I guarantee that not only do they not feel the least bit guilty about this, but in fact, it doesn’t even occur to them that they shouldn’t be availing themselves of this type of rock-star lifestyle on the taxpayers’ dime.
Heh. They’re entitled to their entitlements.
KevinB, I’ve never noticed any hesitation to slag the First Lady when hubby is a Republican.
However I don’t think even the knee-jerk drive to praise a Democrat would be enough to get Michelle a pass for those “LOOK AT MEEEEE!!!!” outfits.
I think its more the deltoid development, the fact that she’s got a 17 inch neck and those hand calluses from all the batleth practice.
That’s why she looks cranky all the time. Her Klingon soul rebells at not being allowed to cut off the heads of servants who displease her.
Kaplah!
“The Ford’s Theatre Lincoln Medal”??!
You gotta be kidding me. Is that before or after they shoot them in the head?
Barry:
“Georgie (Soros) and the gang are telling me we are getting a bad rap because of all this partying…maybe we should lay low for a bit”
Michelle:
“F*#$% what the whiteys out there say, it’s OUR turn, that’s why we were elected…I never heard of the previous Prezzes being critisized for that…It’s because we are black…And it does’nt look like WE are going to be reelected anyway, so…”
Anger…Revenge…Sticking it to whitey. That’s probably the bottom line.
Hey, Louise; my favourite Michelle get-up was the little Bo-Peep outfit she wore to Westminster Abbey -so appropriate for a house of worship!
By dressing as she does, Michelle Obama is showing nothing but disrespect and contempt for her position as First Lady. She is trying to be hip, and instead, comes off looking like a hag!
I have no problem slagging MO and her attire. She courted the media by trying to be the next Jackie O, and thus bears the fallout.
Jackie Onassis had class and grace. Michelle Obama has neither!
An affirmative action president,
we got what we paid for.
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says his talks with Gulf fishermen and oil spill experts are not an academic exercise.
They’re “so I know whose ass to kick.”
Don’t be talking no trash about his wife,
or he will come up here and kick your ass.
Violet @ 1:58 PM, indeed. Her fashions are just fine for the party-going jet-setter life, but for functions such as the one you mention and for state occasions, whether in Washington, DC, or any other world capital, rather than being dignified and stately, her clothes are garish and grotesque.
Come on, guys! You’re being too hard on the poor man! I mean- do you how much energy it takes to fake sincerity? Do you? It’s hard pretending you care for a country you hate. And poor Michelle having to wear those slave-labour made dresses with American labels. I could just cry for her I could!
Osu Kin, LOL!! The women can talk politics AND fashion. The guys are at a disadvantage.
Fake T..Kermit the Frog has a Doctorate of Amphibious Letters. It wasn’t even from UofC.
I don’t find it either funny or appropriate to go after Michelle Obama’s dress sense. We should have the decorum to leave her and her total lack of style, alone. The first link to a blog found me reading a lot of nasty things and this time around I agree with the Left, that the criticism flung at Michelle Obama’s clothes and her looks by the other side is totally unwarranted. Bad call.
Fake T..Kermit the Frog has a Doctorate of Amphibious Letters. It wasn’t even from UofC.
Osumashi Any woman I know knows how to fake sincerity and no not only that. Men I don’t think are quite as good at it because they really don’t care what you think.
Phantom:
I don’t recall any sustained campaign to impugn Laura Bush (I’m not saying it didn’t happen but it’s certainly not top of mind like, say, the campaign to impugn not only Sarah Palin but her daughters, her infant son, her husband, etc.).
Regardless, that’s not my point, which was respectable people don’t belittle other people for their choice of clothing, unless it’s something completely hypocritical, like Bardot wearing a fur coat. If Mrs. Smith wants to fantasize that she’s beautiful and sexy that doesn’t bother me at all; it’s that Mr. Smith fantasizes he’s doing all the right things that gets me upset.
Civility is important in everyday life , but I think it’s vastly different with someone like mrs obozo. She spends a lot of time and an obscene amount of money to try to look good. I suspect she thinks she succeeds most times. People who care about this stuff pay attention and respond accordingly, with gushing praise or somewhat gay sounding criticism. It’s part of the show, if you will.
Perhaps most important – do you honestly think she gives one sweet damn what you think?
“somewhat gay sounding criticism”
I was referring to the fashion types, btw, not the hilarious remarks here. I always get a kick out of the klingon references. (But if you make her cry, you’ll to to buy her candy.)
KevinB – if I may – the thing is that Michelle is always being touted in the Mainsteam Media as a glorious fashion icon and splendiferous beauty. Now I personally think that she is a pretty woman, albeit rather a mean-spirited looking one (of course that kind of thing is subjective). During the campaign, I actually found her very stylish (I can seperate pulchritude from ideology); later the boob-belt problem, among others, became manifest.
The point is that she is being shoved down our throats as an uber power-babe and a clothes horse; and of course this is all to do with the outstanding tone of Barry and his regime. Such elegant and superior cats, they are. The “all a-flutter” post, above, is just one of a zillion examples. Laura Bush, another attractive First Lady, never sought Michelle’s kind of attention and would have been savaged if she had.
In schoolyard terms, KevinB, she started it. (And what the heckity-heck is up with that damn boob-belt?!?)
Obama parties while seagulls and pelicans are being covered in oil. The definite proof that Obama doesn’t like white birds. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/world/breakingnews/pictures-of-wide-eyed-pelicans-seagulls-frozen-in-oil-become-gulf-spills-symbol-of-death-95683984.html
Ahh, SDA…a bunch of class acts, as always!
Wasn’t it not too long ago when folks around here were going on and on about Bush Derangement Syndrome? And yet, gleefully ridiculing First Lady Obama’s physical appearance for one anothers’ amusement is considered what — fair comment?
Yes Davenport ridiculing her for her poor choices in fashion falls uder “Fair comment”. This isn’t a court of law buttercup, if your metro sexual tender sensitives can’t handle the comments here’s an idea leftard don’t read the freaking comments.
When I look at her I see an angry ugly women inside and outside.
Frankly, I don’t know how anyone in the whole theater would be able to hear a thing over that outfit.
“She started it”
Huh? You think she called in the White House press corp, and told them “You better tell everyone I’m beautiful and sexy, or you’re outta here!”? I don’t disagree that the MSM fawned over her, but I hardly think it’s something that she started.
I don’t know any relatively young, moderately attractive woman who, if suddenly thrust into the national spotlight, wouldn’t try to make herself look as good as she can. (I mean that Carla Bruni is such a frump!) I don’t fault Mrs. Smith for doing what comes naturally. Of course I think the MSM over-reacted, but frankly, it’s not men who are interested in who designed the gown or the jewelry.
And to the many who say “Well, the Left does it, so we’re just going to do it back”, I say “That is no argument at all.” If you think dragging yourselves down to their level is useful, uplifting, and morally instructive, you’re wrong. It’s petty, and it’s small, and it’s classless; if you delight in it, so be it, but don’t pretend you’re on the side of angels – you’re not.
Davenport said: “And yet, gleefully ridiculing First Lady Obama’s physical appearance for one anothers’ amusement is considered what — fair comment?”
I believe the appropriate phrase is: “Turn about is fair play.”
Besides, I’m not belittling her appearance. She’s everything anyone could ever want in a Klingon warrior-ess. Warrior-ete. Whatever. The chick’s got guns on her like the USS Missouri.
Perhaps the trademark scowl is more because she can’t find the right pumps to accessorize her disruptor pistol and d’k tahg combo.
KevinB: “I don’t disagree that the MSM fawned over her, but I hardly think it’s something that she started.”
Kevin, come on man. Its part of the “Camelot 2010” hype campaign. Truth is I’ve never noticed or cared what she was wearing. But I’m supposed to notice, the spin machine is going to considerable trouble to make me notice.
Did you read the CNN link? “What makes Michelle Obama’s style so exciting? It’s youthful, accessible and irreverent.
Case in point: the wow-worthy Peter Soronen gown she wore to this week’s state dinner honoring Mexico. We’re still talking about it, and how she consistently pulls off enviable looks with ease.”
That’s the state dinner for the Mexican president who spent most of his speech slagging Arizona and a bunch of racists, with Barry and Michelle nodding in benign approval.
So upon further consideration, my answer, -to the spin machine-, is she looks like a big, mean, hard muscled woman who spends ‘way too much time in the gym, in a really loud dress. I’d want her on my side in tackle football.
Oh, and her husband is running the US national debt up to 19 TRILLION-with-a-T dollars by 2015. So if I can maybe speed his way out of office by saying he married a Klingon, I’m good with that.
We save honorable tactics for honorable opponents. When fighting the Left, we kick below the belt and hit them with the chair. Steel toes, Kevin. Steel toes.
KevinB: She had to hold still long enough for photographers to fill just about every space on the magazine racks with photoshopped images of hers … it was a carefully orchestrated campaign. There was a point where going to the magazine aisle was a pure MO-fest.
The WH planned it.
Rose @ 7:09: “…ridiculing her for her poor choices in fashion falls uder “Fair comment”. ”
==================
And she’s hardly the only public figure who comes under the scrutiny of the fashion police. There is an entire industry built about fashion “critique”, if you will, of the clothes chosen by rich and powerful women..
On that magazine rack that Cjunk refers to, for example, there will be general magazines that happen to feature a story about MO’s fashion sense all the way to magazines that deal solely with fashions worn by the high and mighty. Hollywood types are especially coveted targets for these rags. All of them may feature from time to time, or on a regular basis, a column on the “best dressed” and the “worst dressed” women.
Anyone trying to be a glamour queen, which is what Mrs. O is trying to do, is fair game. She is the wife of the POTUS, for f@ck sakes. She’s a big girl now. If she can’t take the heat, she should get out of the kitchen. It’s not as if she’s some poor girl who can’t afford nice clothes or who never went to “finishing school” and her “feewings” might be hurt.
Now, if you want to heap praise on MO, there are always her special causes, such as reading, nutrition, gardening, encouraging kids to stay in school and study hard, etc. etc.
If we were talking about her kids, on the other hand, that’s a different matter. Children of the rich and famous are off limits, as far as I’m concerned. (Unless your mom is Sarah Palin, of course, then everything is fine./sarc)
Ford’s Theater:
Sic semper et ignoramus
Please, don’t anybody do Obama any favor to save his image from a failed presidency. Whether he wins again in 2012 or not, his agenda is over. Shaka when the walls fell.
Oh, and “physical appearance” and “fashion sense” are two entirely different things. The first one, you may have very little control over (a facial deformity, one arm is longer than the other, big hips, tiny boobs, etc., but the second on is easy to acquire, especially if you have big bucks to blow and an entire retinue of ladies in waiting to look after you’re every whim. Well, I guess tiny boobs can be fixed to, if you have big bucks to blow.
to those who say”lay off Miz O”, she is screeming for attention, and she’s a gittin it
if her persona was like that of Laura Bush, then she would be all most ignored like L Bush
but as with most lefties, the spouse of the one in the lime light all ways thinks it’s their turn also
This moronic “First Lady” concept is extremely tiresome, but as long as Mrs. Obama isn’t meddling politically, what’s the harm?
By the way, both Barbara Bush and Laura Bush were not above doing just that. Some examples:
Laura Bush publicly urged her husband to appoint a woman to replace Justice O’Conner, and just recently endorsed the Elena Kagan nomination.
On the Hugh Hewitt Show, Mrs Bush said, “… after September 11th, of course, we became focused on foreign policy, and really remained that way for much of the time, for the rest of the time, or the rest of our seven years in office.”
We? Our?
Sounds like the red-plate counterpart to Hillary Clinton’s blue-plate special.
Ramon Daley: “…as long as Mrs. Obama isn’t meddling politically, what’s the harm?
By the way, both Barbara Bush and Laura Bush were not above doing just that.”
=================
And then there was Shillary.
In actual fact, I do think Mrs. O is doing a lot of good work, like I said way back up there somewhere. I remember seeing a video of her attendance at an all girls boarding school in Britain. A majority of the girls were of African and sub-Asian Continental ancestry and Mrs. Os purpose was to inspire them to stay in school and work hard and accomplish great things. The girls were thrilled that she had come to speak to them.
She’s been doing that sort of things a lot. But her fashion sense, sucks. That’s not a big deal, though, any more than criticizing it is.
I do not believe we know the real Michelle Obama nor will we if they have their way. They shut her up quickly after that ‘for the first time in my life I am proud of my country’ remark during the campaign. She is no shrinking violet and if truth were known she may well be more radical than POTUS. I do not know who dresses the woman but it MUST be a Republican. It is just that bad. You’d think she would have a sense of herself and what she looks good in and does not. It cannot be cheap to dress FLOTUS, far from it, so she should be able to make some sort of fashion headway.
Someone must be certain that stroking vanity and abandoning fashion sense is going to pay off.
I hope she gets to keep these monstrosities when she leaves the WH. Which cannot come soon enough.
Remember the issue brought up about the campaign’s expenses for Sarah Palin’s wardrobe? Ostensibly it was about the money, but it quickly led to general snarkiness, like maybe she’ll show up to debates in flannels with moose bloodstains and so on.
So, yeah, it’s definitely a bit of a stretch for anyone on the left to try and claim any sort of high road when it comes to things like this.
KevinB @8:52 – “Huh? You think she called in the White House press corps, and told them “You better tell everyone I’m beautiful and sexy, or you’re out of here!’?”
Well, no, I think Rahm Emanuel probably handled that.
Seriously, the Media has been playing this up to a ludicrous degree. It’s not a conspiracy, any more than Barry held a gun to Ted Turner’s (I don’t know, whoever it is now) head and said “tell everyone how wonderful I am all the time”. It’s more like an arrangement, or an orgy.
(And Carla Bruni = professional model.)
Davenport – we love you too.
In summation, I do not think that criticism of Michelle Obama’s fashion issues = hitting below the boob belt.
Spending(wasting) time ridiculing Mrs. O’s appearance distracts people from the real issue of Obama avoiding dealing with the oil “spill”, and pretty much anything else that really matters. Maybe thats the plan.
